Has anyone else had the issue of having to 'toggle' the check box on, off, and back on for the "Allow data connections on device when connected to PC" within windows mobile device center just to allow traffic to pass through?
I have to do this every time I disconnect the Imagio and reconnect it... regardless if windows mobile is running or not.
My situation is even having unchecked "Allow wireless...." on Activesync, whenever I sync the phone it stays connected to 3G.
I have a tilt with Win6.1 Shifu and it disconnects from 3g when I sync.
BTW, is there any way to setup as in Win6.1 to Disable Data connections when the screen is off?
How do I edit the email scheduling? (Found it! I wasn't able to find the usual screen, and I thought that it was removed on 6.5...)
Thanks!

where do you find the box to check off exactly on the Imagio. I cant find it.
In your PC, ActiveSync:
File
Connection Settings
The last check: "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop"
If you can't find it, try to Sync it again as a new phone, and you'll be prompted asking it...
I hope it helps...
I'm still wondering how to disable data connection when you lock or turn off your screen.
Help please!

I upgraded my firmware to 2.17 from 2.09 and now my phone cannot sync email while the USB is connected to my pc. Anyway to fix this?
I had this issue with the 2.09 and currently have it with 2.17. Sprint tech help was unaware of this issue (big shock). Does anyone know the answer?
EVDO While on USB
Do you loose all internet connectivity while docked? Have you checked this setting:
On the computer, open ActiveSync and navigate to: File -> Connection Settings..., make sure that "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop" is checked.

i have the same issue, and the check to allow connections is turned on, at least in xp. I can't find the same option in vista.
I would assume that if I dropped a new ROM on my device I would need to configure a whole new ActiveSync profile. Unfortunately, from my own experience, ActiveSync is a B***H when it comes to having 2 sync profiles. I remember even uninstalling AS and trying to remove all references in Program Files and REG and it still thought I was syncing with the same device.
I would have to suggest something extreme. Installing AS on another PC and trying to sync or... reimage your PC and reinstall AS fresh.
I had the same issue, there is a thread on msn about this...

For me, turning on wifi on and then back off via the hard switch seems to fix the issue. Hope it helps.
try settings-connection-usb to pc- and uncheck Enable Advanced Network Functionality
Hi,
after upgrading my unbranded HTC Tytn to more recent WM5 version through official ROM upgrade from HTC (italian version QTEK_405), the activesync connection only works if I connect via Bluetooth or IR.
The USB connection doesn't seem to work anymore.
Activesync seems to try to connect, but after a while I get the "cannot establish a connection..." message.
Checking the Network Connections on the PC, it looks like there is in/out traffic packets on the device, but nothing else happens.
Also tried on another PC and same behaviour.
Activesync version is 4.5 build 5096.
Any idea also how to test that USB connector is working properly, to narrow down the problems ?
Thanks in advance
Did you try disabling the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" checkbox in START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-USBtoPC?
Also if your are running WinXP or Vista... with your phone connected with the USB cable. Check in the Device Manger, for any "unknown devices". Select them and remove.
Now disconnect your phone from your computer. Then do a "Soft" reset on your phone. Now reconnect through the USB and does it recognize it as a ppc device?? now try to ActiveSync again!!

Yes, no success.
I can see in the Device manager that the network card is replaced by a USB device, but nothing happens on Activesync side.

Tried that.No unknown devices.
I've uninstalled the newtork card corresponding to the Tytn, disconnected and soft reset the device.
It seems to reinstall it properly, but still same behaviour.
One thing that makes me wonder is why the device shows as Windows Mobile-based device #3.
Anything I can do to celanup this ? It looks like it's got some old device hanging.
What about ActiveSync on the ppc? Do you have the "Synchronize all PC's using this connection" checkbox checked? Does it point to "USB" below the checkbox? What do you have in that MENU-CONNECTIONS... screen on the PPC?
Damn it Ive been having one problem after another with my 8525 just when I think things are going good there is another set back.
My phone wont sync to my computer anymore. I have Schaps 4.20 installed and I installed the cube earlier today just to see what it was like because I was going to upgrade to shaps 4.3. Now its time to upgrade and when I connect my phone to my pc i get a message that says "usb device not recognized"
What the heck is going on?
I uninstalled the cube from my ppc did 2 soft resets, restarted my computer and it still wont recognize my pcc
Im getting a message that says "one of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it"
It goes on to say "Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize it, replace the device."
None of this sounds good. Im stressing out!
After two hard resets I finally got it to accept Shaps 4.3 rom. It still wouldnt do it after the 1st and 2nd hard reset but for some reason, the last time I connected it via usb, it worked.
THANK GOD! I dont know what happened and why it wouldnt connect but Im happy I fixed.
Activesync 4.5 Stuck saying "Synchronizing"
The post above saying:-
Did you try disabling the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" checkbox in START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-USBtoPC?
was the solution to a major headache I was having with Activesync 4.5 on a new HTC TYTN II connecting via USB. It would sit stuck with the sync indicator turning / swirling and a message saying synchronizing, but would not be doing any synchronisation!
I disabled the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" in START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-USBtoPC it it immediately began synchronising. Thought I would enable it again and it went back to just hanging there, definately needed to be disabled to rectify the problem.
Thanks.

I have to disable that on both my wizard and my trinity when syncing with either my XP computer with active sync 4.5 or my Vista computer which comes with WM Device Centre. The problem is since putting an otherwise rather excellent 6.1 rom on the trinity, nothing happens at all with that option disabled. With it enabled it connects but has the problem described above. On my wizard a message pops up when it establishes a connection, nothing happens on the trinity though. It was fine before with the original ROM. I am using [WWE][20-10-08]NiAx Trinity 6.1.70 BlueAngel - OS & SYS 20748 [ONLINE] any thoughts on what could be going wrong here?
Hi all.
I have the problem that when I have the HD docked either in my carcharger or regular charger it won't go online on 3G network.
I think there might be a setting saying it should use USB connection instead of 3G when available, but cannot find it.
Can any of you recollect where to find it?
Right click the active sync icon in your system tray and open up "connection settings..."
On that dialog, make sure that "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop" is ticked, and that it says "This computer is connected to" "Work Network". (That last setting tells it not to use the USB connection as an internet connection.)
I used to have the same issue and those steps fixed it. Hope you have the same result mate.
Actually, I've just reread your question and noticed that it doesn't work when plugged into the charger, not just a PC.
I'm afraid that advice won't help at all, and I've never had a problem with this unless connected to a PC.
Good luck with it!
Is there any chance that you have an automatic profile selector?
I use SPB Phone Suit and have the phone off when I'm charging at night.
Thanks for you comments.
I will try a hard reset and see if I somehow can change something in the setting up.
If I find an answer I will post it here.
Thanks.
Hey guys
I'm a big time noob, and the HD2 is a complete marvel for me, its my first WM device and I'm learning alot thats for sure. If there is an obvious solution, apologies in advance
I've been looking around the forums and googling for answers, but still unsure about the data connection and wifi settings in the HD2, and have spent the last few days checking the connection status/settings. Sometimes I find that the WiFi and/or Data Connection ON/OFF toggle section is greyed out in Settings, no idea why as I haven't been able to find a real reason. Could anyone please explain why this may be the case?
Ideally I'd like the WiFi to be the preferred internet access mode, but I'm not sure what my phone is using when I access online content. I can see the wireless is connected, but how can I be sure its definitely using it? I can check the notifications that I'm connected, but I'm also seeing a connection to "Contract Internet" which is normally on H with full bars.
On my previous phone a Nokia N95 8gb (nothing compared to HD2 bar the camera ) whenever I wanted to go online, I had it set to "ask" what connection to use, e.g. I had a list of connections such as Vodadafone Contract (3G/GPRS) or from a list of my defined WiFi connections.
Is there something similar somewhere in the HD2 settings that would "ask" what kind of connection to use? It would be great if someone could let me know.
Sorry to be a pest, but anyone?
Hi there. I'm not an expert myself and HD2 is my first Windows Mobile device as well. I'll try and help, because I spent some time looking for answer on that particular subject. Let's go through this point by point.
(1) You have to understand the notification icons that appear on the topbar. Download the official user manual here and look for pages 39-40. These notifications are realtime, thus more precise than the Comm Manager.
(2) Let's be clear: the word "data connections" that appear in the Comm Manager only refer to the internet connections using 2G (GPRS or EDGE) or 3G (UMTS or HPSDA), not Wifi. So it won't toggle on, even when your wifi connection is up and running.
(3) A lot applications use your internet connection (Data or Wifi), even when the phone is in sleep mode (weather updates, stocks updates etc).
(4) About the following question: I'm not sure what my phone is using when I access online content. I'll tell you the way it works on my phone. Still, you'll need aswers of other people as well. You have to consider different situations.
- If no internet connection is on (no wifi, no data) and an application need to access internet (ex: Eutomatic updates or Opera browser), then the phone will open a data connection (2G or 3G). If it doesn't succeed, you'll get an error message.
- If wifi is already on and connected, but data connection is off, the applications will use the wifi connection. Unlike data connection, the applications are not able to "force wifi connection" if it's not already connected... I don't know if there is a setting or a tweak to change this.
(5) Unfortunately, I already experienced some application that "force" the opening of data connections, even with wifi on and connected. That's why I disable every automatic updates. I only do manual updates... and it "obeys", meaning that updates use the wifi when I'm connected, and force data connection when wifi is not available. I tried some complex (freewares) softwares like WMLongLife (found here) because I wanted the data connection to disconnect automatically after an updates (manual or automatic), but they were not very handy. The latest I tried gave me the best results. It's called Bandswitch 0.3 (found here). It works great in doing just that: automatic data disconnection after idle delay you choose.
(6) Is there something similar somewhere in the HD2 settings that would "ask" what kind of connection to use? I'm not absolety sure, but you could try to reach this settings. Follow this path: Windows icon -> Start menu -> Settings -> Connections -> Connections (yes, once again) -> Go to the tab called "Advanced" -> Click on the button "select networks". Here you can find what program which network programs must automaticaly use. You'll be able to see the 2G/3G network, but I'm not sure what you should choose to enable WIFI connection... Tell me if you find!
That's it folk. Cheers.
Sorry for a short answer, but Wifi will always be grayed out when your hooked up to your pc, I didnt notice it at first either so dont be embaressed
(subscribed to the thread because I think something that would let you pick your connection type would be ace)

I also noticed this, but yesterday I found an option in Activesync windows mobile device centre on my PC by accident. It says "disable data connection on phone when connected to PC"
If you untick this box you can connect to wifi and GPRS/HSDPA all whilst still connected to the PC through usb!

I guess you'd wanna do that only if your PC is not connected already to the internet... which is rare...
Because your device is automatically connected to the network your laptop/pc is currently connected to.

Yes it's strange isnt it. I cant think why it is necessary really to change this option
I just thought I would let you know incase you wondered !!
Thanks rzasharp and [★], things are clearer now.

If your computer uses a proxy server to connect to the internet, your phone doesn't assume the same identity as your PC. At work I can't use the PCs internet connection on my phone when I connect via ActiveSync, but my phone charges and I can browse it in file explorer.
That's one reason why you'd want to do it
My ActiveSync won't Sync
I found with "Enable faster data synchronization check box" ON then doesn't even start ActiveSync on PC. Instead the LAN icon starts searching for an IP.
if OFF then it tries then ActiveSync says ERROR code 85010001
this page
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/exchange_errors.php
says An invalid HTTP communication or protocol syntax occurred.
reboot doesn't help.
Are you sync to Exchange of PC files?
if Exchange, try turn off push update, sync, and turn it back on.
sounds like it's stuck in modem mode or something.. have you tried switching between modes? e.g. put it in modem mode and disk drive and then activesync again..
no Exchange
turned off all except contact/calendar
tried disk drive and then activesync but no good
then tried turning bluetooth off and it worked with with "Enable faster data synchronization check box" off
so still not perfect
The more complex, the more can go wrong. Recently my HD2 has not been running activesync on connection. It is a problem after I have hibernated my PC, but also randomly at other times after a disconnect and reconnect.
Following hte advice above I've tried the change to modem, change to disk and back to activesync, but that did not help. Unchecking the "Enable faster data synchronization check box" has now allowed it to connect.
While activesync was unable to connect, I could still connect using a brilliant little program, sadly not recently updated, called mymobiler. That lets me control the HD2 from my PC< and do screen dumps as well. So how come that would connect but MS Activesync would not? And it was not a new install, I've had that since my first few days of the HD2 and worked well until the last couple of weeks, when this issue has become increasingly annoying.
While activesync was telling me I was disconnected, in the Windows 7 Devices and Printers there was an icon for a "Generic RNDIS" but nothing else about it. When on the HD2 I go back into USB to PC and check the tickbox for "Enable faster data synchronization" that icon reappears. Maybe disabling then enabling this check box has sorted it. Time will tell.
Hmmm...
It is not a new issue with activesync and htc phones. This thread is a year old.
In fact a search of hte web shows htis is common across several makes of phone.
Damn. When I installed HTC's latest hotfix for SMS, it soft reset the HD2.
On restart, the HD2 was not recognised by the PC, but it does show in Devices and Printers as the generic RBIS. So; uncheck the "Enable faster data synchronization" and it appears on the PC as a Generic Serial device, then becomes a live device in the Mobile Device Centre. I guess we won't be using faster then.
What I don;'t understand is why both of the showings in the Devices and Printers are Generic. Surely there is a driver?
argh, now it's broken again, had BT on...
htc has no clue and suggests (again) that I just keep creating a new partnership each time I have this issue (daily)
Are you sync'ing to an external exchaneg server as well as locally?
I had an issue with mine that the external exchange and local seemed to clash some how, I deleted the external and all internal connections from the phone's active sync screen and then the local PCwas able to re sync, then added each of the other conections and made sure that there where no contradictions in the syncing rules?
Maybe not your issue but worth mentioning!

I regret this is incomprehensible. "nowt" means nothing, so you are saying that nothing is broken again. That would be good, not bad. Your post then stops part way through and concludes negatively against HTC, though for no reason whatsoever. Please could you repost with something that makes sense?
I have no exchange servers, just local PC,
but all errors are exchange related, so HTC say.
if you dont have an exchange server then remove it completely ftom the list of sync locations (i cant remember how you do this, but its the same screen where you select what you want to sync). ive found that if it isnt being recognised that removing the phone from device manager list in windows (deleting drivers/software if asked) and reconnecting the phone seems to work. i have my driver install set to use windows update to locate drivers so try this as well
HD2 won't activesync via bluetooth
My LEO do sync properly via USB. Not connect absolutely via BT.
my setting is :
internal GPS connect via COM4 to TomTom7, VisualGPSce, TutorAssist
and seems to be:
bluetooth port IN is COM1
bluetooth port OUT is COM2
In my Notebook the lonely Local port is COM5. No other one is available
ActiveSync Bluetooth connection is set on COM5
So i know this thread is way old but figured id give it a try. The screen cracked on my TP2 and I cant get WMDC to recognize my device to pull the data. I'm pretty sure that enable faster data synchronization is checked and my screens broken so i can't fix that. Is there another way I can access the phone? Any help is appreciated ty.
