Used G1 - What to Check for...? - G1 General

If I'm to get an used G1, what should I check? The trackball? The keyboard? Total on or talk time (how to check that, BTW?)...
Thanks in advance.

test the gps and wifi, look under the battery for the water stickers, talk time don't mean $h!+. See if the void sticker is there, and most of all, make a test call, ask the other person if they hear you good.

Just as phatmanxxl said, MAKE A TEST CALL! Can't stress this enough.
And remember, you're purchasing the phone, you have the right to test out every aspect of the phone to make sure it's in proper condition, don't try to rush through because you think they'll feel weird about it.

As others have stated, check bluetooth and wifi. Make sure to meet at a place with open wifi and make sure to connect to an access point and browse. Also, bring any bluetooth stuff you intend to pair and pair with said G1.
I bought a used g1 and I checked wifi and bluetooth by turning them on but I didnt really go any further than that. I figured if they could turn on, then they worked. When I got home, I tried to connect it to my router and it will NOT connect. Havent fully tested bluetooth but since its my wife's phone and she doesnt use bluetooth or wifi, I'm ok.
Also, bring an active SIM as the guy I bought mine from had performed a wipe and didnt have a sim. Luckily I brought my wife's sim and I popped it in and went through the whole login process.

Thanks to all!

T-Mobile UK WiFi Hardware

Yes i know must of you are probably growning at this question, but I could not find any similar posts.
Does the UK T-Mobile Artemis have WiFi hardware? And if so can it be enabled with hack?
Thanks for your help, its going back to tmob if I cant have wifi.
You seriously couldn't find this question asked before!!!!!!
No, it has no WiFi hardware, so no you can't enable what isn't there.
The trade off, is that we get dirt cheap GPRS that we can use anywhere, rather than hunting around for free hotspots.
Both would be nice, but I wouldn't give up my T-Mobile account for anything.
Guess I must have been putting in the wrong search strings?
Anyway, thanks for the fast reply.
I had wifi on my prophet and to be honest never used it. You wouldnt leave it on as it would drain the battery within hours. Also when you turn the device off the wifi also disables. If it didnt the battery wouldnt last a day.
The bad side is when you turned it on to do anything quickly the thing lagged while it tried to connect and do its thing. If you controlled it manually... well it was just more trouble than good and I never used it. Would have loved 3G though instead.

Not receiving phone calls?

Hello all,
I have had my X1 for about a month, and it seems I've come across a problem that defeats the purpose of a phone. I can't seem to receive calls for some reason...recently my friends and family have been telling me they have tried to call me but it just ends up going to my voice mail. I just tell them I was probably on the phone with someone at that time, or my phone was off. Only today did my friend call me to find me in a parking lot that I finally realize its my phone. So I attempted to call myself with my homephone, and tada! it went straight to voicemail. I don't even get any sign of a missed call.. Did anybody else getting this problem? I did a soft reset and it seem to fix the problem. It has probably happened within the past 2 weeks..I have the generic UK rom so I'm still waiting for the official R2A one. It would be great if someone could explain how to prevent this problem from happening.
not that i have a problem with my x1a, mostly because i rarely get calls and rarely use it but i have another phone that would have a problem that you describe.
i think it was due to the phone switching between 3g and edge signal. i work in the ship yard and the steel walls around the ship interfere with my signal and my phone would switch back and forth between getting the best reception (3g and edge).
well anyways, i think the switching back and forth would somehow screw my phone up and i wouldnt get any calls after getting off work.
my brother who also works at our shipyard and carpools with me would try to call me up to ask me if i was getting off in time but i wouldnt know that he had been trying to call me untill we meet up. he tells me that he has been trying to call me and so as were walking back to the car, i asked him to call me to see if my phone is working.
sure enough, my phone doesnt work untill i turned it off and then turned it back on. so if your in an area with poor 3g reception, maybe that could be causing your problem.
my old phone was an old lg cu500. thats my beater phone and since i dont use it for browsing the internet anymore, i set it and leave to use edge. it gets a stronger signal than 3g but if i do need to use 3g, i just go to my phone settings and set it back to use both signals. for some reason, i almost love that beater phone more than my xperia. mainly because its small, compact and i dont have to worry about scratching or damaging it anymore.
hmm, that is rather interesting...however my service provider's 3g frequency band is not compatible with the x1. I also don't have an internet service type of plan with my phone.
However just going to my settings, I noticed that my phone was set up to attempt to connect to the internet via HSDPA. I'm going to disable it and see what happens.
if you dont have 3g or hsdpa connection, then i would set your phone to use only gsm.
I also miss most of my calls but my problems is other some times it rings and some times it doesnt. Anybody know how to fix this?.
I have seen these problems with another PDA, in that case it seemed to be related with the PDA radio at the beggining, but even if that is one of the probable causes, there are another two to be considered.
The first one is the sim module, I own the same sim since 6 years ago, and this sim was programed specifically for the symbian phones of those years, it is in fact unable to send/receive any MMS with a PDA.
The other PDA I'm talking about is an Universal, the same phone worked ok with my sim and failed to receive many calls (even if the covering of this phone company was "better") -in the same place- with the universal, We first suspected a broken sim, but using this sim in a old gsm phone, it worked just fine.
Also, the cell companies, tend to "abuse" of their position and then to "seed" the phones with applications that do use the phone automatically, these programs are made mainly for symbian phones.
Remember also that the cell networks are exactly that, computer networks, and sometimes their databases are not perfectly compatible with all the possible variations of slightly different phones, in this case, PDAs are the least common type of phone.
So, try your phones with other (another cell company) sim, try using the sim with old phones, etc.
hope this helps.

Internet Help Please?

Hi everyone,
I'm new here and this looks like a good place to learn about all things WinMo
Unfortunately, i think i may have donw something to my HD2 and now it wont let me on the internet. It says at the top its connected via 3g or whatever's the strongest connection. But whenever i try to launch anything requiring the internet it comes up saying its unable to connect and to try again.
I've had the phone 3 months and its been fine. THe only changes i've made from standard is adding cookies home tab (which im sure didnt do anything) the only other thing i did around the time of it stopping working is using tree size mobile i selected "Load Default Settings" could this have done it??
I've also just noticed it wont let me call people, it just does 3 beeps and hangs up even in strong signal.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Mark
Have you paid you're bill lol
anyway settings>connections>then take a look in connections see if all you're settings are still there if not go back a page and hit up connection set-up and it should put you're settings back in have a soft reset and try again call wise not sure, could be a problem with the phone that requires a hard reset(back to when you first got the device)
I'll enquire bout the bill, shouldnt be though, cos when you get cut off it doesnt let you connect to 3g, and when you call its just says connection to this number is restricted on this phone...which it isnt doing, its just not calling at all.
Been into settings and everything is on and i've done the reconfiguration to Vodafone and its still the same.

confused sprint free tethering stock 2.1 gone 2.2

this is a short story of my past week saga.
a month ago i got 2 evos. wife and i.
i was sold on the fact that with these phones while one could pay 30 bucks a month for up to 8 on wifi hotspot,
OR!
they could be used for internet sharing over usb for free to one computer.
that is what 3 different sprint reps told me, and i was shocked b.c i thought there was no way to get that but i was clearly told and i asked repeated questions because it seemed like nirvana.
anyway i get the phones and as i am getting teh numbers set up do the dreaded late june OTA update which apears broke a bunch of your roots. bummer.
anyway.
i live in a 4g land and happily for a month on both phones I
turn the 4g radio on,
wait for connection,
connect supplied usb cable to computer with htc sync software installed
connect phone and use usb settings drop down to set the phone to
internet sharing over usb.
with in 30 seconds htc sync had added a network adapter and life was great.
i don't think i ever did it over 3g, however a sprint rep told me after asking "is this free tethering to one computer only on 4g thing?" replyied "i haven't had anyone say they couldn't over 3g but im not sure" but i tried once and i don't think it got working, i think i got error 67.
i thought it was hilarious b.c i assumed most were rooting for the great wifi teather, ?or usb? and it was working as so out of the box.
so after carefully reading the hundred or so posts by all rooting methods, what to do with adb, then the single click, then the single click removal due to messed up 4g stuff... i just kept waiting b.c although im sure i could follow a multistep nand root process, but as the phones worked so well as is, and i wasn't sure if teh 4g radio was sorted out yet in a simple root i just waited to root later.
so this past thursday or so i did on my phone the official over the air update to 2.2
3.26.651.6
and all day i was highly enjoying it. small changes here and there
UNTIL!!!
i went home and did the standard 4g radio on, usb connect, drop down,
hm... internet sharing has been changed to usb teathering....
and i did it, and nothing happened. error 67
so this time i unplugged radio 4g of on, confirmed in menu settings we were go with ip
and phone internet worked
but after plugging in usb and switching to usb teathering and quickly going back to the 4g menu status page i would watch the 4g radio disconnect, start scanning, maybe attempt to connect to sprint, then scann again forever
then dump a error 67.
so.... thats a frustration...
so i call sprint, and they say you need to go to a store to fix the update, yes they know it createdissues. so i go to a store.
they send me to another store, a tech store... they say oh you get error 67?
call sprint tech support they need to clear it up on their end.
so i call and they try it. i do the whole pound pount 32 somthing enter a code
off on
wait.
and still errors and no connecting...
so i call and they say you need to go back to the tech store adn have them put the update on.
i am slightly ticked at this point but totally staying cool.
i am starting to realize that this is an issue. and sprint has no idea.
next morning i do make it back to the store...
and speak with the tech guy
1st telling him the story.
2nd asking before anyother stuff, can we make this simple and restore my phone with thier tools to 2.1
he says basically, ah nope. i can't do anything. i have no tools.
i have no software. on this phone its basically the ota's htc send us.
so bascially spritn wants me to get all the way here,
and all he's going to do is go behind the door
punch around on my phone to make sure im not an idoit, then set the phoen back to factory settings, and make sure 2.2 looks aok.
so knowing this isn't going to solve anything, i let them go anyway so when i talk to sprint again i have followed their suggestions yet, i still have teh issue.
so that's what i do, and after putting contacts back on and using an app to restore most of installed apps. i head back home...
there is now frustration but still maintain my cool, bc after all i live in america, and i will get to eat today. overall life is good.
idea, lets call htc. so i do.
basically this person is slighly tech and proceeds to say,
from what i hear, due to a glitch 2.1 owners have free hotspot.
most likely that got fixed in 2.2
but i held my ground stating that hotspot and usb data sharing are two distinct thigns, and as much as sprint would like to merge and charge, that difference adn stated fact was the selling reason for me on these...
but she confirmed that there is no going back to 2.1
but also left me with a glimmer or hope.
so i called back sprint then sprint tech, then got on the phone waitng for advanced tech support to call me back on the idea that i just need my account provisioned for usb data tethering. which allows a 1 computer to share the data from my plan, and as i have unlimited, its no problem.
the tech tried to do something like that... but got to a point where we changed and confirmed something deep in my phone like either a 3g or 4g mac address was right, but i still had issues, and so he said he woudl have advanced tech call me back b.c they had better tools to assist me.
well that hour call back still hasnt happened and its around 36 hours know.
maybe i get a call monday..
however... at this point i am bugged b.c obviously there is still a 2% change this will get solved by the correct device provisioning,
however i believe now the sprint reps merely didn't know it was a glitch which allowed single person teathering so now if i call, basically all i get is big crocodile tears that say im sorry you were misinformed...
so the hilarious this is i still have the other phone, no way i will update that one, b/.c its our web lifeline now.
and if the other one gets sorted out great.
if not,
i have been waiting in the back, but this time.
im joining the others waiting for the FANTASTIC DEVS to find the exploit to allow nand rooting for the ota and stock shipped 2.2 evos
and i will be in.
it can't come soon enough.
thanks for reading, enjoy your night.
**newcomers like me to xda, please spent a couple hours reading up before you post or ask questions.
you will be shocked how many answers are here.
if all your wanting to do is tether to 1 pc through USB, than just get EasyTether.
It works great for me, and I still get 7mbs with 4g turned on while doing a speedtest on my PC. And, you do not need to be rooted to use it.
Yeah, thanks for the reminder, i tried that and pdanet first, but stopped bc i was able to with htc's stock software, and i was told its legit from sprint, but at this point it might be the way to get along till more headway is made, only 10 for the https and would work well as i dont need root. At this point 40 quarters is a better use of my time Still though kinda ticked at sprint, i feel like this has been a mega bait switch. They have been helpful, but they cant fix it.

Need help... note was stolen.

hey guys, a buddy of mine just had his note stolen. it is a wifi only device and i need to know if there is a way to locate it... i dont have any information of the device available other than a text+ phone number that the device is using. please shoot me a PM if you have any ideas, i have a few people working on it right now but need all and any ideas or input. please send PMs
thanks in advance
All notes have antitheft application built in it, atleast mine has, you need to register the same if you do you can track the phone from Samsung tracker website, it should be able to give you its location and also should be able to lock it, dont know whether it will happen with a wifi version as there is no imei number you can check

thank you... very useful... contacting somebody i know at google right now as well.
But... if you did not activate the utrack function (and if you did, you should know), then it will not work.
Found it.. Thanks for the input guys
Before saying it doesnt work (if you will) mind this:
1. It has to be switched on obviously
2. You need to have a working internet connection, meaning if he removes/switches simcard (you may recieve a notification about simcard change) and turn off WiFi, you're toast
3. Its possible he made a factory reset.. If so you're also toast
Personally Im using rooted N8000 and Avast Anti-theft.
Cheers cobraboy for letting us know, most people just leave threads open ended. How did you find it? Be interesting for others to know....
His saving grace was that it was connected to my buddy's WiFi...there were 4 people at the house when it turned up missing...
I got on his main computer at his house, pulled up a list of all the mac IDs connected to their WiFi, identified all 10 devices in the house individually, phones, computers, etc...
His tab should have come up on that list if it was there - it did not. So I confronted the person who I was pretty sure was the only one that would have taken it and told him I knew he had taken it - he came with our other friend..
Showed them all that it was physically missing and not in range of the home network... Even tho it was previously connected... Then told him I was going to call the cops over there if somebody didn't fess up so this was his chance to come clean (as my friends and I don't ****ing steal from each other... Durr) and he admitted to putting it outside while we were all upstairs, then texting another friend of his to come by the house and snagging it.
Got it back. And somebody might have had a bloody nose when all was said and done. Low lifes.
glad you got a result!
i would have emptied there pockets and took anything of value while i was at the nose breaking ceremony
alls well the ends well good you got the note back now activate the tracker
I have had great experience with the Cerberus anti theft app :good:

Glad you got it back. Pretty smart idea!
Sent from my GT-N8010 using XDA Premium HD app
You can also write a Tasker code for this kind of stuff. My TF101 used to take a snapshot of the front and back cameras, turn on WIFI, located by GPS and WIFI, then sync the photos and location data to a dropbox. I didn't do more coding because it was inconvenient and I ended up with shots of me taking a ****.. but, you know, if someone wanted to, he could easily turn that into a profile based on location (ie. maybe it won't take snapshots if you're on a recognized wifi or something).
How do you turn on the anti theft......would be interesting to hear from users of N8000, N8010, and N8013 to see IF the process is different for each.
Also, it would be nice to read of users preferred app......

It's called Samsung Dive and it's pretty cool beyond just lost device tracking. You (N8000) owners can use it to forward calls and MMS to another device, ring the device (like if you lost it in the house), and, if it's stolen or lost, remote wipe and lock it so it can't be used.
You sign in to the Dive website with your Samsung account. My account's in the UK so I don't how it works in the U.S. I didn't do anything to get my device(s) to appear in Dive other than use my Samsung account when I first set them up.
http://www.samsungdive.com/DiveMain.do
To get Dive to work you have to enable it on your device. It's under Settings>Security>Remote controls if it's available on your particular Note. This is from my N2 but the 10.1's the same.
Just registered with Samsung Dive. N8013, signed in and it automatically recognized the Note. Pretty slick
