Not receiving phone calls? - XPERIA X1 General

Hello all,
I have had my X1 for about a month, and it seems I've come across a problem that defeats the purpose of a phone. I can't seem to receive calls for some reason...recently my friends and family have been telling me they have tried to call me but it just ends up going to my voice mail. I just tell them I was probably on the phone with someone at that time, or my phone was off. Only today did my friend call me to find me in a parking lot that I finally realize its my phone. So I attempted to call myself with my homephone, and tada! it went straight to voicemail. I don't even get any sign of a missed call.. Did anybody else getting this problem? I did a soft reset and it seem to fix the problem. It has probably happened within the past 2 weeks..I have the generic UK rom so I'm still waiting for the official R2A one. It would be great if someone could explain how to prevent this problem from happening.

not that i have a problem with my x1a, mostly because i rarely get calls and rarely use it but i have another phone that would have a problem that you describe.
i think it was due to the phone switching between 3g and edge signal. i work in the ship yard and the steel walls around the ship interfere with my signal and my phone would switch back and forth between getting the best reception (3g and edge).
well anyways, i think the switching back and forth would somehow screw my phone up and i wouldnt get any calls after getting off work.
my brother who also works at our shipyard and carpools with me would try to call me up to ask me if i was getting off in time but i wouldnt know that he had been trying to call me untill we meet up. he tells me that he has been trying to call me and so as were walking back to the car, i asked him to call me to see if my phone is working.
sure enough, my phone doesnt work untill i turned it off and then turned it back on. so if your in an area with poor 3g reception, maybe that could be causing your problem.
my old phone was an old lg cu500. thats my beater phone and since i dont use it for browsing the internet anymore, i set it and leave to use edge. it gets a stronger signal than 3g but if i do need to use 3g, i just go to my phone settings and set it back to use both signals. for some reason, i almost love that beater phone more than my xperia. mainly because its small, compact and i dont have to worry about scratching or damaging it anymore.

hmm, that is rather interesting...however my service provider's 3g frequency band is not compatible with the x1. I also don't have an internet service type of plan with my phone.
However just going to my settings, I noticed that my phone was set up to attempt to connect to the internet via HSDPA. I'm going to disable it and see what happens.

if you dont have 3g or hsdpa connection, then i would set your phone to use only gsm.

I also miss most of my calls but my problems is other some times it rings and some times it doesnt. Anybody know how to fix this?.

I have seen these problems with another PDA, in that case it seemed to be related with the PDA radio at the beggining, but even if that is one of the probable causes, there are another two to be considered.
The first one is the sim module, I own the same sim since 6 years ago, and this sim was programed specifically for the symbian phones of those years, it is in fact unable to send/receive any MMS with a PDA.
The other PDA I'm talking about is an Universal, the same phone worked ok with my sim and failed to receive many calls (even if the covering of this phone company was "better") -in the same place- with the universal, We first suspected a broken sim, but using this sim in a old gsm phone, it worked just fine.
Also, the cell companies, tend to "abuse" of their position and then to "seed" the phones with applications that do use the phone automatically, these programs are made mainly for symbian phones.
Remember also that the cell networks are exactly that, computer networks, and sometimes their databases are not perfectly compatible with all the possible variations of slightly different phones, in this case, PDAs are the least common type of phone.
So, try your phones with other (another cell company) sim, try using the sim with old phones, etc.
hope this helps.

MDA Pro - Not ringing when I phone it :(

Dunno what is going on here - I had this problem occasionally with E200 / C500 on Orange, but not to this extent.
Sat at my desk, I suddenly get a Voicemail notification. Strange, as the phone hasn't rung. So I decide to test it.
I get NO ringtone on the phone I'm calling from. Nothing at all. Then it cuts straight to VM. (Phone is sat with full signal, and connected to UMTS network). I phoned 5 times, all with the same result.
Then I hung up the UMTS. Same thing happened.
I did a soft reset and left it in clamshell mode, and phoned again. This time I could clearly hear the ringing on the phone I was calling from, but the device didn't ring / vibrate or anything.
I opened it up and had a message "The phone operation failed" so I hit OK on this and closed it back up again. Phoned it again and this time it rang properly. I hung up before connecting, and got the "Missed call" notification.
Its not (entirely) down to being connected to UMTS - as my phone reconnects automatically as soon as it starts up.
Anyway, having dismissed the "You have a missed call" notification, I tried again. Its back to its original state now, no ringing heard on the phone you call from, and nothing on the phone itself. I only got ONE missed call notification, despite calling it around 7 or 8 times in all.
What the hell is going on here? It almost seems like the phone itself signals to the network that it is totally unreachable (hence no ringing heard by the caller).
I assume you haven't set up diverts or anything?
Get your network provider to do a test and see if they can give you any further information.
Failing that, it's possible that if you stopped the ExtROM from fully installing, it could be causing problems? Or maybe even some sort of task manager may be 'killing' the phone services?
I hadn't set any diverts, and it was the oddly random nature that was cause for concern - it worked after the soft reset, but didn't work beforehand. I can't be doing with a phone that, for its own reasons, refuses to aknowledge an inbound call! This should take precedence over anything else the "phone" is doing at the time, surely...
I've got T Mobile to send me out a reset of my profile (a text message which I delete, then power off the device) and I'll see how it goes.
I did have SBP PocketPlus installed, but no longer... I've not got much installed at all, at the moment.
Strongly considering flashing to the iMate ROM at this moment!
After removing the battery I retested. It was fine.
After writing the last post, I retested again and its broken again.
B*llocks.
The same as you my XDA Exec, oftern misses calls, ( you ring your self and hear it reing bu the phone makes no noise) i also had the same on my XDA2i, and yes removing the battery fixes it for a while.
Also mine when it looses service ( witch is oftern ) it will not go back into service until i soft reset it
John
Hmm, sorry no clue.
I have a JasJar and no-one has told me off for missing their calls. (I take quite a few from work, but rarely make any myself)
Maybe try a ROM flash, but I'm sure other Exec users are not having these problems, so it sounds like it might be something other than a ROM issue?
I've just stuck the iMate Rom on it. Was probably going to do it anyway, but didn't want to break my TomTom setup...
I'll do some testing and will repost on this thread with my findings.
I'm still getting the problem with the iMate ROm installed.
When I go to the Phone settings, it thinks I'm on the UMTS T-Mobile UK network. Now I'm sure this is fine for data, but maybe its not OK for voice, or something like that?
Can anyone let me know what they have in those settings?
Spotted this too on the Jasjar - can't pin down why though as it only appeqars to have started recently
Stu
I'm becoming certain that my data connection is effectively hogging the phone and not allowing voice traffic. I just had problems sending a text message. Every time I hit send, it failed (about 6 times) and went into drafts. To get it to sent, I hung up my active data connection and tried again, and it went immediately.
This is a nightmare, as the device HAS to perform both voice and data functions. I want an always-on data device, but the data MUST be interuptable by inbound / outbound phonecalls as well as notifications (SMS etc).
Right...
I've dropped down to GSM instead of 3G by removing the "Auto" setting from the Band option within the Phone Settings. This appears to have solved the problem.
From looking at the network, it appeared my phone was always connecting to a network called "UMTS T Mobile" (this was even displayed on the occasional incoming call that worked as the carrier). I'm certain this is what is causing the problems. After a Soft Reset, it would still connect to this, as my OTA ActiveSync connection would start up...
Having changed to GSM instead, I'm now connecting to "T Mobile UK" as my carrier - and this is allowing full inbound/outbound functionality - albeit only with GPRS data connectivity.
I'm on T-Mobile UK, and MSN Messenger will happily be interrupted when I get a voice call?
I'm lucky enough to live and work in an area where I'm only ever connected to UMTS (although the setting on my phone is "Auto"). I'm 99% certain that I can get calls every time, and having tested it just now a couple of times it's working without any problems, so there must be something that'll sort out your problem?

I'm lucky enough to live and work in an area immediately covered by whatever equipment may (or may not) be located a T Mobile's head office...
I cannot discount the possibility that they've erected a UMTS cell which they "tinker with", which may (or, indeed, may not) be causing my problems...
I guess next time I'm out of the area, and in a 3G coverage area elsewhere, I will revert and test it.
In the meantime, they've asked me to test by switching back to "Auto" and trying to phone my phone once in a while, taking note of when I call and whether I get through, and they'll endeavour to trace those calls and find out what is going on...
I hope you'll be sending them an invoice!?!
I have this problem now. I only noticed it after a ROM upgrade (to the latest TMUK ROM). What fixed your problem in the end?
Hi All
I have had a very similar problem and have been discussing it in a separate thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=62863
As you will see, it seems to me that it is a T-Mobile issue, but they don't acknowledge that it is a fault. I don't get the same problem when I put an O2 sim in my Exec.
Other than downgrading to GPRS, I don't think there is any fix.
Mark
Mark, I've had a thought. Do you (like me) have an old 5v T-Mobile SIM.
These SIM’s can be identified either by SIM serial number 893044 05 or 16 – up to and including 893044 50. SIMs with serial numbers 893044 52 and above will be ok- anything lower is likely to be a 5v.
There was an issue when I 1st got my MDA Pro. It had to be network unlocked by T-Mobile for it to work with my SIM. Is it possible that the ROM update as "re-awakend" this problem?
(Also posted in thread you link to)
Thanks for the idea, Slave1, but I don't think that is the cause of the problem. My SIM doesn't have a serial number anything like those you suggested (it starts 060080...) and I only got it a couple of months old and so I am sure that it is a 3G one.
However, now that you mention it, I did have a problem getting the SIM to work when I first got it. I had to get on to Customer Services to get them to register it on the network becuase, they said, the shop hadn't registered it correctly!

All SIMs are usable with 3G (it's the handset that make the difference)

That's a different issue but just as frustrating.
I had another though. Is anyone using a T-Mobile SIM in an XDA Exec (or just using an O2 ROM) having the same problem?
Could it be a ROM issue?

Phone connection dropping

My P3600 phone goes insane sometimes, and will not dial out (hangs up immediately after dialing without ringing), or hangs up within 5s of me answering. Does this happen to anyone else, and if it does, what do you change to fix it?
jchap2k
Same here...
I don't know why this happens...
Me also
Running the new HTC official ROM, I noticed it first with the upgrade, I make a call like voicemail from the attention prompt and I put the phone to my head and the call is ended after like 5 sec. I though at first my ear was hitting end but tried it without moving the phone anywhere and it still will randomly end calls right after I try to make them... tried disabling smart dialing and that seemed to work at first but I could have just been lucky because it didn't keep working... anyone else besides us three?
I also lose calls or conversations break in the middle. I went to HTC service and thet recommended me to change the SIM with a newer one. I did that today and I only lost one call so far (but I was sending an MMS while talking to a customer service rep so it might be related to that). If things improve I will let you know.
Mihaig, any news about your SIM change as connection dropping solution ?

I tried turning off UMTS (using only edge), and so far I have not had any dropped calls/immediate hang ups. Would getting a new SIMs card allow me to turn back on the UMTS bands?
I did have a sim card go bad that had to be replaced. The phone wasnt dropping any calls, then all of a sudden just couldnt find the network. My new card has dropped a lot of calls lately.
But i'm not too worried, my service provider thinks its there network fault and I the complete call is free as long as I phone the person back.
Anybody have a 'settings' solution, I would be very interested.

Well, so far no more dropped calls after turning off UMTS. I wonder if a new SIMs card would help in this matter. (mine is only 1 year old though).
Only with Car Bluetooth
There are some gaps in the conversations when I use the Nokia Carset bluetooth but with the P3600 itself no problems so far (just 1.5 week old). I do have some problems with the SD card, ones two days the info is corrupted and I need to format the SD card.
As far as I have found out, the problem has to do with 3G, the 3G hasn't got coverage everywhere ( at least here in DK ) and when the phone switches, it sometimes lose connection for a couple of seconds. Switching off the umts did the trick for me, no more hang-ups or lost connex, but then again, no more video-calls or streaming, so it's a choice... :/
Hope the next update will fix this, if there is a next one... P

There is a known problem with many service providers and HSDPA. If you have the phone on automatic while in 3G mode, when your phone connects to data the phone will switch to HSDPA just for the data transmission (if your provider supports it), during the transmission calls are not received and usually sent to voicemail. This doesn't happen with all providers, but it does with many of them. You can turn off just the HSDPA and not the 3G with this tweak program http://www.fit4cat.de/thread.php?threadid=263. On my phone I have no problems with normal 3G, it is just HSDPA that is the problem.
Hmm, I already tried that program but I still had the same problem even after turning off the HSDPA only. It never happens when UMTS is off completely though. I figure when I want to use the internet I will turn UMTS back on and when I just need it as a phone I can turn it off.
Sorry folks, dumb question: where can I turn off UMTS in my trinity and only have EDGE enabled?
Thanks for your help...
mfg OK
Press the green button to start the phone, then Menu/Options. Select the 'Band' tab and change the upper box to GSM.
Leave the lower box at 'Auto'

I replaced with a new Cingular/ATT 3G sim and still the same problem... I'm going to also try to turn off UMTS to see if this fixes it... mostly I notice when calling voicemail from the notification tab... Oh yeah, it now says ATT as my service...
I have this problem, on the Orange and T-Mobile network, with WM5, and WM6. Have the latest radio, the works.
Bit of a joke that this happens to be honest.. a phone that has 3G/UMTS but that won't allow a certain number of calls when it switches. Pretty fundemental flaw if you ask me!
I've set band to GSM, let's see if it fixes the problem. Will download the aforementioned hack this evening.
Ah, I see it's the operators problem, not the phone's. Flipping amateur of orange not rectify this before shipping..
I've used HTweakC to disable HPSABCD(sic) and will see if the problem stops.
Not a SIMcard problem
HI Guys!
I work in a Mobilephoneshop for a Network Provider, and i had the same problem.
The first trinity that arrived in the shop was mine
And this little bas... droped many calls.
I talked with the tecnics from my prov. first we changed the sim, but same problem. Reflashed Rom same problem.
It has something to do with teh HSDPA, evrytime my trinity connectet them, the calls was dropped, the bad thing was, we have a HSDPA antenna in teh shop
Only the change of the devise worked.
Hope was helpfull and sorry 4 my bad english!
mastah
See above, use HTweakC to disable HSDPA, but leave 3G enabled.

wing: data service died

ok so after some long searching, hours on the phone with PDA techs at tmobile, for the second time my phone's data no longer works.
basically i am on tmo for 6 weeks now. after having my wing for 3 weeks the data stopped working, called wetn though trouble shooting, the sent me a replacement. this past week on jan 10th, the data on the new replacement phone stoped working again. called tech again same steps, and they are going to send me a new phone.
at first they said it is a network issue, so to prove thats not the case i go to a friend with a wing, swap sims and his phone with my card worked, his card in my phone did not work.
just to try it i installed Open Touch v2.4 Biggy
which i am now im love with, but didnt change anything...
does anyone know how i might go around avoiding this from happening again.
also on a side note
when the phone attempts to connect and fails, it no longer makes/receives phonecalls or txts. have to power cycle the phone to be able to make calls..
so does any one know why this is happening to me or does tmobile just hate me
You just had a touch of bad luck. I've had my Wing for about a month and a half and I always get a strong signal anywhere, even in my 12th floor apartment in downtown brooklyn, where I always had trouble getting a signal in with my older phones.
maybe i miss spoke, i have full service, phone is purfect providing i dont make a data connection attempt
ok ill chart it out
Phone | Works
Data | Not Working
after trying data
phone and data dont work
for making calls i got 100% signal but not data..
well i just started having this problem last night except i cant make or receive calls niether :-/
im dieeeing here
i connects to tmobile network after manually connecting it and then i still cant make calls and the data connection has no conection at all :-/
im about to kill this phone once and for all
People with some Hermes (I think) were having problems with their radio chip overheating and destroying itself... I wonder if we're running in the same problem. HTC might have gotten some back chips.

use the reset button
that normally works for me if i try to connect to data and fail..
you know the name the wing
means the phone is built for flight, as in the one out my window its going on soon
I was having this problem back in September/October..
I would be working at a job site and would need to record the air temperature, so I'd connect to weather.com or accuweather.com. It would refuse to connect.. sometimes it would say the remote connection was refused.. I couldn't connect to any other sites either. Or I'd be chatting with my gf or best friend and would get disconnected out of nowhere and might have no phone signal at all. It drove me nuts. If my phone connection was still working, I would contact Tmobile customer service. Each time it turned out they were having data connection issues for the western US... although I live in Central US, I was still considered West hmm. It was around the same time that Tmobile was quietly changing their unlimited data plans from $29.99/month to $19.99/month.. or whatever the prices.
So.. I figured it wasn't my phone.
Around the end of that month my phone was working great.. no data probs at all.. at least not that i knew of :-D
The same problems happened for me at the beginning of the year.. but I'm assuming it was due to the insanely heavy traffic(bc of holidays, new years, vacationers, etc) the mobile network had at the time.
My phone and data are working great again without me having done anything about it.
Sometimes turning off the phone connection... which will cut off your data connection too... then reconnecting the phone and then data connection would make mine work. If not.. maybe running network wizard.
I know that didn't help, but I just wanted to say I experienced that as well.
Good Luck!!

Disable phone, data

A while back, I dropped my 8525 and cracked the screen. I paid $170 to replace the screen, and a couple months later, I was unable to consistently make phone calls. I frequently get error messages like "the phone is not ready. Wait 15 seconds and try again". Occasionally, the phone will attempt to redial the last number I called, even if the SIM has been removed. (I've been using a prepaid phone with the SIM from my 8525 to make calls and send text messages).
I have scoured this forum and the wiki researching this issue.
Here is what I've tried:
Exchanging the SIM (have tried 2 separate "3G" SIMs from AT&T)
Upgrading the phone to WM6 (tried multiple ROMS)
Downgrading the phone to WM5 (HTC stock)
Upgrading the radio to pretty much all of them
Selecting GSM Only in the Band settings
Multiple "band selector" programs to keep the phone from switching bands
Opening the device and putting paper on the "pressure" point (though I can't be entirely sure I did this right, since the original poster of that term never clarified what he/she meant)
None of these options have been able to fix the problem (which I fully understand may be a hardware problem, and thus there's little/nothing I can do).
Here, then, is my question:
How can I completely disable the phone, data, wifi on this device?
I would like to be able to give the device to my lady as a poor man's iPod Touch. I want her to be able to listen to music, podcasts, sync with outlook, use the camera, and play games without having to deal with the phone/data problems I've been trying to remedy.
The phone issues on this device have been maddening, and it has nearly ended up smashed into tiny pieces MANY times. I will probably end up getting an iphone so I can carry only 1 device with me, rather than this piece of sh!t and my crappy prepaid.
Thanks for your help.

Best Way to Test Signal

Can anyone suggest the best way to test cell signal on the S7 Edge? My wife and I both have the same phone, but hers consistently seems to report more bars in the same location. I've had calls drop quite often on the first dial and then they stay connected the second time I call. I'm looking to test both phones and see if it's all in my head or if there really is an issue with my device. Any help would be appreciated on an app to use or other way to test the two phones. Thanks.
did you try phone info fromthe play store.
under monitor it will tell your signal strength. I believe through its service menu you also preform a signal test.
Yeah, but those numbers don't mean anything to me. Other than saying moderate for level, it doesn't say much.
Edit: My wife is not home right now, so maybe I'll install this on both phones and see if there is a difference in the same location;. Just wondering what options are out there for testing.
when you look i phone info under signal strength the number tells how good your calling capability is,
It is measured in dBm.
average should be should be around -101 dBm for full bars depending on your provider.
compare it with your wife's signal strength.
Keep in mind that software plays a part, please check that base band version and csc is the same.
Different base bands and csc means that signal strength can vary.
These should be identical as these two items communicate with your phone provider re reception and transmission.
Phones are both stock. Same provider and same software version. I'm pretty sure I've got reception issues because of the dropped calls. Like I said, she's not home right now to test, but in looking at bars previously, she always seems to have more bars in the same location as me. My phone in our condo here is always around -111 to -120 (LTE). That is right on the cusp of bad from what I can tell. Not sure where to go from here. Really don't want to do a factory reset, but I've read it can help clear up problems like this. Not sure how. Might be a lemon, as I've only had the device since February.
i suggest you call your provider and ask them to reset your phone on their system.
It might cause a difference because of flushing out of any information that may have been related to issues on your account.

Hmmmm...not sure what this is or what it would do. Never heard of such a thing.
Just got another dropped call. Signal was about -114. I placed a call. While it was connecting, the signal went to about -130 and then to -102 and then dropped. On a second attempt, the signal went to -97 and it connected fine.
Normally when you call your provider to report a problem with your phone.
One of the things they do is to reset your account in case there is an issue in your file as well as doing other tests.
It is similar to you cleaning the cache on your phone from time to time as bits and piece of old files then to slow down your phone.
Try to swap the SIM cards and check what happens.
So this is an older thread, but the issue had been ongoing. Lots of things tried. New sim. Called Rogers (my provider here in Canada) and had them reset mobile connection settings on their end. Tried resetting on my end. Seemed to get better and then back to being an issue again.
Lately it had gotten worse. When I would drive home and park in our parking garage, I would immediately go into roaming mode and was no longer connected to the Rogers network. I was then connected to Rogers-EXT because I had enabled data roaming on my device, from a previous call to Rogers, it was their suggestion to try and keep connectivity, as it is included in my package. The phone would stay roaming as I rode the elevator and into my condo and then usually connect to WiFi and then eventually reconnect to the main Rogers network. Meanwhile this never happened on my wife's S7 Edge, going the same route from her vehicle. Same device, exact same settings, same software version, same updates, etc. Her's never entered roaming mode or got disconnected from the main Rogers network.
Lately, when mine had been entering roaming mode and after I entered my condo, it would stay connected to Rogers-EXT. No matter what I did, a reboot, turn roaming on and off, etc. I had to physically remove myself from the LTE network and then reconnect and register with the network, and then I would connect to the main Rogers network and stop roaming. This was all getting damn frustrating, especially since the same thing was not happening to my wife's phone.
One setting I had not read much about and had not tried was VoLTE. I went into settings and turned this off. I immediately started getting a bit better readings on signal strength as well as no roaming issues any longer at all. I could park, ride the elevator and get into my condo and stay connected to the main Rogers network without issue, exactly like my wife's phone. Funny thing is, VoLTE is ON, on my wife's phone.
I really have no idea why her's works and mine doesn't, other than a hardware issue on my device. I thought about sending my phone in, as I'm still under warranty until the end of December, but right now, everything is working as expected and I haven't heard call quality suffer at all, with the calls I've made so far. I really didn't want to have to wipe my device and send it in and deal with a loaner if I didn't have to. I only plan on keep the device until about August of next year anyway.
If anyone out there knows of why this was happening to my device and not hers or if you have any other suggestions as to how to fix this and re-enable VoLTE (although I don't think it's really that important), please let me know. Again, it sure seems like a hardware (antenna) issue to me.
Aaaaaaaaand nevermind. Worked fine for about 3 days and today it was roaming again after coming up from the parking garage. Ugh. Wish I knew for sure this was a hardware issue. Such a pain to send your phone in, use a loaner, set your phone all up again when you get it back.
