I just got the hero and I've been having problems syncing it with Windows 7. I've done everything to get this to work but nothing seems to do the trick. I've got all the the drivers apparently but my phone says that it is unable to find HTC Sync. Someone please help me.
This is quite a common problem.

This link will give you the instructions and drivers to get you up and running.
I've got a Hero couple of days ago and had problems syncing.
Windows (7) simply did not see the phone. I've read alot and knew it was a common problem, after doing everything possible, following different guides, I had no luck.
I've decided to do a hard reset (don't know what's the right term for android)
and it worked right away. HTC Sync on my hero appeared in the Notification area and everything went fine.
Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately everything you told me to I did. No results. My computer recognizes the sd card but doesn't say anything about my phone. The Hero recognizes that its been plugged in but when I try to sync it, it says that it can't find HTC Sync on the Windows 7 32bit. Please tell me you know a new method to help me. Thank you.
if you use something like task manager for killing processes make sure you do not kill the htc sync process (or something like this) and check/uncheck USB debugging. Setting->Applications->Development. I saw that when is check the windows 7 is installing some additional drivers

I have experienced another problem...
Sync starts, but stops after 48 contacts Error message: Connection timed out (translated from Norwegian).
Any ideas?

Hi
I have upgraded to Activsync 3.7.1 and although the sync works between Outlook and PPC I cannot explore the PPC either using explore on the ActivSync menu or My Computer My Device.
I am trying to install TomTom 2 Maps to my SD card and it is not being regionised.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled and still getting the same. Any anyone else experienced this? I would be very grateful for any ideas on how to sort this.
Many thanks
Matt
An update
I preformed a hard resent on the device and still I cannot explore the PPC. HELP PLEASE.
Matt
So no problems before
So if I understand it right, You didn't had any problems before the upgrade to 3.7.1
That is correct, worked fine.
Make sure you've got all explorer windows closed before syncing.
If you have a previous window open, before syncing none of the windows will display anything - you need to sync and then open explorer
That is strange
I don't have to close any window.
OK. so if you place the machine into the craddle, you won't get the message connecting to.. is that right?
Hi
I do also have a problem with active sync 3.7.1 when I want to sync anything on my PC with my XDA.
I can only explore my device if I don't select contact, mail or something, otherwise my XDA crashes and I do have to do a soft-reset.
Try to have your partnership without any syncronisation... even if it bothers me a lot, I can currently live without syncronisation... hopefully I find the time to investigate this issue.
Does anybody has the same expierence ????
I don't want to do it with try-and-error...
What are your connection settings
Are all the three boxes ticket under connection settings? ( under active sync)
i seem to recall that zonealarm need to let some program get access before i can sync
other software firewall may require the same thing
including windows internal firewall
It worked before with older version so
If it worked fine with the older version, then it must be about settings within the new version (Igues)
When you installed the new version of activ sync, did you also altablish a new full partnership?
activesync hangs @ 91%
been doing wuite a bit of work on both the phone and laptop... no complaints at all.. but this morning AS didnt work.. so i uninstalled and reinstalled it again.. hoping that itd get back to place.. but while installing from CD or HD it stops @ 91%. says wceusbsh.cab file is not being read..! took it to the system administrator.. removed all entries from registry... and modified the evnt viewer as well.. everythng in vain..
the last retort is to take the back up of my comp.. and reinstall OS.. but is there anything i can do to avoid it..?

I've tried to open the WMDC for almost a week without any luck.
When I click on the WMDC icon from my start menu, WMDC logo pops up from the screen says "Please wait while Windows Mobile Device Center starts." for about good 15 seconds... and the poof. Nothing happens.
I uninstalled the WMDC and reinstalled it many many many times without any luck. I even deleted the device driver from driver manager... no luck.
What is going on? I has been working fine until last week?!? and I can't seem to pin pont what the heck is wrong with my computer...
BTW, I have a Titan (Verizon Wireless X6800) with DCD's 2.2.6 rom with the 3.27.00 radio rom... and of course Hard-SPL has been done. I suspect nothing really is wrong with the phone and am pretty sure that it has got to be the computer itself..
Can anyone chime in on this matter? I'd really appreciated all your help.
Can't anyone help me???
try opening sync center first. (control panel/network and internet/sync center), once open, plug in your device then open wmdc.
it might work
Have you tried rebooting the computer? Sounds like a "stuck" process.
make sure you actually have WMDC because Vista says it has it when you install it, but it actually doesn't...
uninstall WMDC and reinstall it. A few had this problem and thats how they fixed it. This is what i did:
1. Uninstall WMDC
2. soft reset phone and killed active sync
3. install WMDC
4. Plug in phone to computer...
I've done the uninstall/install like 10 times. Each time, I went to MS website and downloaded fresh copeis of the file.
Also, I've tried all the methods above...
Thanks for the input none-the-less.
Anyone else got an idea what's going on?
No one has this issue? So my only fix would be reinstalling the OS?

wait a minute? did u say vista? do you have User Access Control (UAC) turned OFF. and are you the ADMIN. pls reply to this before you attempt a format.
After you install WMDC, you should connect your Titan to the PC, to further initialize the WMDC setup. And thats where the UAC may interfere with the hidden setup. Jus see if its the root of all the probs, before you attempt formatting your OS.
Control Panel > User Accounts > UAC [turn off] PC will reboot.
Nope... this didn't do anything...
OMG... I'm getting so frustrated...
Do you know if I can move my MS Outlook 2007 contents to another computer that's running XP? I've tried to use the import/export funtion, but it won't move everything completely (i.e. pix and multiple phone # in one contact). Any idea what I can do about this?

+1
I figured this out after struggling for roughly an hour trying to figure it out.
-disable UAC and any firewall (in my case windows firewall)
it works fine for me
There is an option in active sync on the device that needs to be disabled i can't remeber what it is.
In the usb to pc settings is the enable advanced function box checked ? If yes un check it.
Thank everyone for your input. I have tried every single options suggested above, but still no luck with it. Luckily, I have another computer so I just transferred all the contact and calendar info over and sync'd my phone there instead.
I have reported to MS about this problem, and I doubt they will respond to it, but might as well try. lol
Thanks again for all your inputs.

I'm not aware of a way to migrate backwards with Outlook. If you have Outlook 2007 on the other machine, you should be able to back-up and restore.
As far as hasta_la_VISTA goes, I can't stand it! I RARELY connect my phone to it, after going through exactly what you're going through. I was depending on the stinking computer, and it would just arbitrarily decide it had NEVER seen my phone before. Or, it would just not start the WMDC. I finally changed my email to IMAP, so that the messages stay on the server, and I don't have to sync with the laptop.
I've finally gotten to the point that I have two computers (and my phone). One is a desktop with XP, the other is a POS Vista laptop. Yesterday, it told me that I didn't have enough video memory available, so it was going to switch me to "Basic" video mode...which it did. Oddly, I've got 1GB of Video memory. So, I rebooted it. It's just another attempt at HostageWare by Microsofty.

Hey see if this works...because I was having the same problem and I found this option in the Connections setting...
goto >start > settings > connections
there you will see something that says USB to PC
in there, there is a check box that says - Enable advanced network functionality...
UNCHECK this box click OK and go back to ur home screen connect ur USB cable and see if it works...
if that doesn't do it, the Microsoft website says to remove the 6.1 update of WMDC and re-install version 6.0... hopes this helps...
I've just installed HTC Sync on my vista machine (fully updated) and after the install when browsing other folders through explorer it caused explorer to continually crash and restart. Anyone else experienced this issue? I had no such issues with my XP machine which synched fine
I just installed this on Vista and it will not connect to my Hero. I dragged it off the SD card (in the hero) thus vista can see the hero, but htc sync says 'disconnected'.
Reboots, reinstalls.... def a no goer here.

If you suss out a sync solution to for i'll be a happy punter.
for getting it working on win 7 you need to install the android sdk and install the ADB driver from there.
If that doesn't work there is a magic one on the forum that works fine for 64 bit win7
To sync with a mac you can sync addressbook with a gmail account out of the box now or you can export a group vcard then upload that to gmail so that sorts the contacts and ical can sync with google calendar by using calaborator
http://code.google.com/p/calaboration/
Will try installing the ask and report back

I found that too
yep I've found that too, I run the magic sync vista 32 bit driver as admin, the phone asks me if I want to set it to sync mode, the cmd window on screen indicates that its found it, then nothing.
This is frustrating for me now, come on HTC!!

That doesn't work on Vista either. You can see the SD card but the sync prog is never found (ie that 2.0.4 one you have posted).

I think the easiest current solution is to sync with gmail/gcal Paul. It's what I am doing. Saying that, I am back using my Kaiser atm
I found co-pilot too buggy and I need gps
Because the HTC sync is'nt working I just transfered my callender and contacts straight to gmail, and thats working flawlessly.
There's still google sync from companionlink, wich syncs Your Desktop Outlook to Google Calendar and Contacts. 15-Day Trial is free, after that it costs once $29,99, but then, You have nearly exchange capabilities (well not exactly to be honest, cause it syncs in Intervalls of 15 mins and not in relatime). Great tool, works like a charm, i can only recommend. http://www.companionlink.com/products/companionlinkforgoogle.html
Any news about uppdated Htc Sync?
How to get HTC sync work
Hi all,
I managed on how to get HTC Sync work for windows 7 (64 bit). I should work the same way for vista if having troubles.
How to get sync working:
- Copy all driver files to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x64
- Install HTC Sync with administrator rights (By coping the files from the previous step, the installation isn't giving an error message anymore).
- Wire up youre HTC Hero to the computer
- Install the drivers in windows for your HTC device.
1 Push start button
2 Click with right mouse button on `Computer`, Pop-up appears
3 ´Click on properties. Screen: "Control Panel\System and Security\System" appears.
4 Click on Device manager
5 Search for ADB at `Other devices`
6 Click right mouse button on ADB and update driver software.
Pop-up "Update Driver Software - ADB" appears. (Not really sure the name was `ADB` but it is something like that, can´t miss it.
7 Click Browse my computer for driver software
8 Browse to the path:
C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x64
9 Click next
Driver is installed
- The sync symbol should appear beside the USB symbole in the screen of youre Hero. Click on it and it should connect. If the icon doesn´t appear, unplug the hero, shut down youre Hero By pressing and holding the `end` button. When the device started up again, wire it up again and the icon must appear.
This is how i managed to fix it. Hope i described everything completely
Good luck
Not a great solution if you are on a 32bit OS/CPU.
I'm trying to synchronize Vodafone HTC Dream with PC. But.. there's problem with USB drivers.
I tried almost everything and already searched internet, but my problem seems to be bit different.
All solutions are based on installing proper driver for ADB device or Android device. I my case there's no such device at all!!
All i got is Mass storage device (which is working OK - i can copy files to/from device) and nothing else. Obviously USB drivers doesn't match Mass storage device.
When i'm trying to uninstall this device, system is installing drivers after reconnection automatically, without asking for drivers.
Also already tried Usbdeview - no trace of "Android" device.
Possibly Vodafone stock ROM lack some communication module or smth.. any ideas?
Edit: finally managed to install USB driver from SDK and all devices can be found as required. But HTC sync still shows no phone
as far as i know, such app is not available for us if it says in the back of the phone "with Google" thats it.
I have exact same problem. I am sure I read it is which drivers you have to use.
Now one strange thing I once got it to connect and start to sync but that was months ago. I am sure this is possible or I wouldnt have had it do it beofre. I have to say I didnt let it finish due to not knowing what settings were in at the time ie didnt want to wipe all outlook contacts, but I am sure it can be done its just how.
Have just installed evils current rom which is fantastic all i need is sync to outlook and I will be happy.
I have it set to synce my outlook to my googlemail contacts and calenders and yes that works but doesnt take all photos of contacts across.
Any ideas from someone in the know would be great

had the same problem on vista.
to resolve:
1. go to device manager (right click my computer, hit manage, then Device Manager on left pane)
2. go to USB Controller and expand. if you can find which usb device corresponds to that of your phone's, then alls you need to do is uninstall that particular driver (right click, uninstall). if not, you'll have to go thru each one and uninstall. once done, this will force the computer to rerecognize your device. you will probably have to reboot once since you'll probably have uninstalled your mouse and keyboards drivers as well. lol.
3. at this point, install your drivers by selecting "browse my computer for driver software," and locating the updated drivers.
that did it for me. hope this helps.
After searching across internet since yesterday conclusion is only one: avoid phones signed "by Google" as much as you can.
Avoid it as you would avoid sex with HIV-positive shemale from Ethiopia.
Phones "by Google" basically can sync ONLY with Google. But.. Google is the place where is main problem. Google's addressbook just sucks. There is only one place for both first and last name. If you sync Windows Mobile device or Symbian device or just your Outlook it will not recognize which part of name is first name and which is last name.
Because in WinMo you can choose how every contact is displayed, Google will read just actual view, not real data.
In result you get incredible mess in your addressbook with some contacts displayed "Firstname Surname" and some contacts "Surname Firstname".
Second problem is if you edit some entries and sync again, Google won't recognize changes and create copies!!!
Threre's no other way to sync your device with Outlook. If you export address book to .csv file you going to loose your photos and some data.
If you use SyncML effect will be similiar to .csv file.
Again - avoid phones "by Google" as much as you can. If you want Android - buy HTC Hero or Motorola CLIQ or anything without "by Google" logo which comes with 3rd party tools like HTC Sync.
Be warned.

have you tried 'settings-applications-develop-usb debugging' enabled?
my taiwan HTC magic seems not to be able to use mass storage device and debug usb device at the same time.
I faced with similar problem. May be it can help.
My info: Windows XP SP3, HTC Magic 32A. I have installed last HTC Sync 2.0.4 already.
When my phone was with official ROM - HTC Sync recognized phone.
Then i uploaded custom ROM CyanogenMod 32A Port with custom kernel too and HTC Sync went to blind. I tried reinstall drivers, HTC Sync, USBDeview but nothings helped.
Then i reverted to official ROM with my nandroid backup (i will do backups often, they really help =). And HTC Sync found my phone and i syncronized successfully.
p.s. USB Drivers from Android SDK are drivers for ADB interface. They need to manipulate with files and roms. HTC Sync use other drivers.
32A and modded system - that's why your HTC Sync is working.
If you have 32B and/or original system, there's some files missing and HTC Sync won't recognize phone.
That's what i said - "by Google" means no connectivity. Files required for HTC sync were added by HTC and phone sold with these files can not be "with Google"
Yes I think i agree, i got an HTC my touch 3g the 32B 2.2.1 android over ebay paid just $72 and it is nothing but problems. i can not get the Sync or any other programs to connect under windows vista (even though it does connect under Linux-Ubuntu) Perhaps the Google version is very difficult to root or whatever else you want to do.
I want to update my HTC Magic with the new HTC ROM that is available from their site. I have followed their intructions and installed HTC Sync on my PC but it won't recognise the phone so i cannot ROM it. I have read some blogs bit none of them have been very clear.
I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. I have read on the HTC site that the latest sync is compatible with 7, but i am beginning to doubt this. I can see the phone in devices and it lists it as an Android device, but that's it. I cannot update/change the drivers, which i have also downloaded. I have submitted a ticket to HTC but that was 2 days ago, perhaps they don't want to reply saying it does not work on 7. I have tried various workarounds from different blogs but none have worked.
Has anyone had this problem and successfully fixed it running windows 7 64bit, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
What error are you getting?
There has bee reported that Windows 7 downloads some drivers that doesn't work correctly with HTC sync. A solution to this is to uninstall your HTC sync, and then reinstall it with your computer disconnected from the internet.
HTC sync installs correctly with no errors it's just the HTC sync that won't see the phone. I can see it in devices but cannot do anything with it.
I have reinstalled it 3 times but not with the PC disconencted from the internet. I will give this a go. Cheers
Any other comments will be well recieved.
One more thing you can try is to restart the phone while connected to your pc. This worked for me earlier, but that was with another HTC sync version.
I've also booted my phone into fastboot to get the drivers going.
Sorry fregor, i have tried that as well, still no joy. :-(
What kind of magic do you have? If you have an HTC Magic that says "with Google" on the back, it's not supported by HTC therefore your phone won't be read by HTC sync.
i believe the issue is with windows 7 64 bit from what i read on these forums earlier.
a sidequestion i had though, when would you need HTC Sync? what does it offer anyway?
Google already syncs your contacts, calendars, emails....or does HTC Sync do photos and videos, music etc?
