I'm curious as to how HTC implemented multi-touch in Opera. They have a few options:
1) Opera itself checks if it's running on the HD2 and enables multi-touch using HTC's proprietary driver/dll
2) HTC customised a specific version of Opera to work with multi-touch
3) The version of Opera is bog-standard and HTC is intercepting/hooking input calls to Opera
If option 1) is true, then a different version of Opera should work fine with multi-touch on the HD2. If option 2) is true, then a different version of Opera won't work with multi-touch.
If option 3) is true, not much can be said.
Anybody willing to try installing a different version of Opera on their HD2 and seeing whether multi-touch still works on that version?
^why is that such a big deal? I mean the best opera is already on HD2 and it works.

because in a little future maybe we want to change the version of opera, upgrade it or similar.
how people can you be so short of views?
It's not a "standard" Opera in that it has a special setting to work with pinch and zoom. Whether this setting will be present in future non-HTC builds of the browser remains to be seen.
HTC couldn't hack Opera because they don't have access to their code.
in the future there are better opera's that will support multitouch probably anyway...
its not like Opera is going to regress...so you can expect future versions to be better than the current one which means more support, more options, more compatibility, ...

I would to try opera mini, but on the official site I can't understand wich version is the best for the HD:

Dude the HD comes with Opera installed? I believe you can upgrade the version 2682 that comes installed to version 2745. check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442252
Is Opera mini somehow better or different to Opera Mobile???
Just installed opera mini on my blackstone.
and it works like a dream.
its runs so much faster than the full version its almost unbelievable! the text might be a bit on the small side, but the pointer comes in handy for all that.
just doing some tests on the the independant website. downloaded, rendered and displayed in about 7 seconds. compare that against the full opera where your looking at about 20 seconds for the whole front page to display.
the mini version also offers proper double clicks for links and none of this zooming in and out by accident malarky.
get onto it. you won't regret it.
for the record installed the PPC600 Mogul version and everything looks great.
IIRC opera mini pre renders everything through their servers?

which versione doo you use? could you link me pls?
I think that is faster that normal opera and more suitable for gprs and 3g navigation than normal opera, isn't it?
in blackstone should be preinstalled opera not opera mini
yes, I'm sure. for me the mini version is far superior than it's big brother (Full RRS support for starters - yes i know the blackstone has the RSS hub, but this isn't linked to full opera browser - so not much use really).
there will be some sites that work better on the full version, but as far as my testing today has gone, all of the sites i used look and perform better in the mini version.

Opera mini is great if you have slow connection(GPRS only), it is very fast, much faster browser than opera mobile. BTW original opera mobile freezes very often on my HD.

I woult to know one thing:
why this versione htc_ppc6800_mogul is the best for blackstone?
do you think will be released a dedicated version of opera mini for blasktone?
Mini Is Mini!!
to me..mini isnt worth it. TOO SMALL, not that much faster either. I cant find a zoom either.
After regular Opera, need jewelers loupes to read it.
Have to use stylus....blah blah...no way
Hell
I like the MINI - very fast
BUT
Does anybody know a trick to make the Font bigger ?
The menu is so small - even with the settings set to biggest Font
Thank you for help
Now why doesn't Opera Mobile have a function to zoom out to a total overview like mini does. I'm sick of spending 5 minutes scrolling down a long page with all the annoying f***** lockups!!

There is one version of opera mini only. The only small differnce on some versions is that some versions are signed for differend java runtimes. That means you dont have to grant internet and storage access all the time. but the browser itself is allways the same - i even use i on a very low end mobile motorola L6...
There wont be dedicated blackstone version, but maybe they will increase the fontsize with comin up more and more VGA and WVGA devices

From what I know, the opera mini goes through operas server which compresses the web sites and reduces the gprs cost very much compared to the full opera!

Opera mini - full screen?
Hi!
One question concerning opera mini - does it run in full screen on the touch hd?
On my htc X7500 there are the operating system bars above and under the java runtime so opera mini cannnot use all the display and run in full screen mode
Could someone please post a photo of the HD running opera mini with a web site like cnn.com loaded?
thanks!

Hi folks!
Reading some threads about IE6 coming embedded into some new ROMs, I noticed I've got my machine with both Opera and IE, but I've not been able to "check" my IE version (not 6 indeed as it's different from videos posted in YouTube).
Is there any way to determine te current version?
Is there any way to upgrade?
Flashing a new ROM just to get IE6 looks overwhelming, not to mention if you have to change your device language on the go.
Opera has not solved my browsing needs, I still have to use my Tablet PC for "serious" browsing. Maybe not that long?
Any ideas or news?
Regards.

Anyway, it looks like IE6 Mobile supports flash and java, this actually is better that what Opera performs.
No matter how "nice" Opera is, it falls short on "basic" issues, like flash.
I don't mind the manufacturer, but my needs go beyond current browsers. In fact my Terra web-mail doesn't work.

Hi,
If IE 6.0 really provides full Flash support it'd be a very good alternative to Opera Missing Flash is my biggest (ONLY) disappointment since acquiring my first Pocket PC...

Blame Adobe for not delivering full flash-plugin for Windows Mobile. Opera supports some basic flash if u install FlashLite.
New IE wont probably come officially for there days devices, as Microsoft have said that it will require some "next generation" hardware.

This is too basic, a half-way only. It's extremelly unstable (at least in my experience, I was forced to uninstall Flash Lite after so many hangs-up) and also not fully supported: Flash buttons calling a new frame are displayed but they are not operational. This is just a too limited embedded Flash player, not really very functional....

IT'S BEING DELIVERED right now on new Asian HD roms, so our current machines should be enough. Isn't?
I've just installed Opera Mini on my Jade and I have to say, it's pretty nice.
Unlike Opera Mobile it is very fast and the zooming and display is better for a small screen like the 320x240 Jade screen.
Since the websites and images will be compressed by the Opera servers, the traffic is lower and the speed higher. Of course, I won't use the browser for sensible data, because the data runs through Opera proxies. But for normal browsing it's great.
The only problem: I can't switch to fullscreen, because the fullscreen can only be enabled by a key combination which I don't have on my Jade. Maybe someone knows how to fix this.
But it's still a nice browser.
Yes agree, I must say the speed is pretty impressive compared with the Op Mob even by setting graphics to high. btw is is there any method to launch it direct without launching jBlend first ? Am I missing something ? Cheers.
Here is a very useful overview of the features the most popular JVMs have.
As for the direct shortcut, my jade came with esmertec jbed, here is a description how to invoke opera mini (or any other midlet) directly from windows.
The problem is there's no description how to do that with jblend (why don't you use the preinstalled jbed, anyway?)
Mine is pre installed with JBlend. I've found the direct shortcut command i.e. \Windows\JBlend_AMS.exe -R 0.jar (0 is where your Opera Mini is in \windows\java, depending on your other installations.)
Thanks.
azahidi, would you highly recommend using opera mini or the stock opera browser?
Hi !
Yes Opera Mini is Very Fast ! That Good but i have the solution for your problem !
When you are on Opera Mini go to :
Setting => Full screen
that very simple but i don't know if you want that or an other "full screen"

For me the same: I find it important that the browser is fully integrated in the operating system (Windows mobile). Opera mini as a java-applet only has limited connections to the other functions of the phone (example: direct dial of telephone-numbers listed on web pages).

Just wanted to give folks a heads up that new skyfire was released and it finally supports higher resolution. Before I would hedge between skyfire and Opera/IE due to the resolution issues but preferring the speed and support for Flash, etc...now this will eliminate a decision as I believe I'll be using skyfire 100% of the time.
More finger friendly menus were added to. Surprises me after all these yrs MS has not been able to make many improvements to IE Mobile.
On a side note it sounds like Mobile Mozilla browser for WM should be available early 2010. Its initially targeted at Nokia phone with snapdragon processor but will than move to other platforms
Just thought some might be interested in the update for skyfire.
been using it all morning. Very much improved. Especially like the fact it supports higher res phones now.
Sorry for double post
One thing I noticed is it seems to use a lot more RAM...not thrilled about that. Maybe they can address this in a quick update. Anyone else experiencing significant ram usage by the new skyfire?

Thanks for the head's up. I've been hoping for this update for a while now.
It does look good. I'll probably still use Opera for most things though, and this for video.
Yeah thanks for the update, made it my default and overall I love it. Only thing that Opera 10 does better is the rendering, you know the checkerboard pattern that comes up when you scroll around. Opera renders it faster than Skyfire but with that improved I would have no issues with it.
Oh yeah that and no option for default full screen mode. You can switch to it but once you use the menu you have to select fullscreen again
I tried it but the opera that came with the TP2 is better.. The new version STILL doesnt rotate right UNLESS you open the keyboard and it still doesnt use the zoom bar

Opera 10 couldn't uisefully use the zoom bar anyway. Version 9.5 allows variable degrees of zoom, but version 10 only has two levels - zoomed in, and zoomed out. There's nothing in between. So enabling the zoom bar wouldn't actually help.
If you're having problems with the rotation then just use G-Config.

Once installed whether to storage or main, just do a soft rsest and it should auto rotate.
I am still messing around with it. I dont know if I should go ahead and make my default yet. The rendering speed is slower than the stocked Opera but I much favor the built in flash for web videos.
yummy
Loved skyfire from day 1, loving it more now that it supports better resolution. Rendering not as good as Opera, but that's expected for now, built-in flash works great still, but that's the advantage of cloud rendering. Typing works much smoother, wait time between skyfire sending data to server then back to your phone is much better. As far as mem usage goes, I think what they did with 1.5 is move some of the operations to your phone. Before with skyfire it was exclusively being processed on their servers. I think now things like putting in username and passwords are handled by the phone and sent in one swoop vs having to wait after you put in username, then wait after password and such. Also I've noticed that you can easily move from one field to the next. You used to have to re-tap each blank field, now it automatically moves the cursor and you can start filling it in immediately. Definitely a better browser. Maybe number one if they add tabs. I haven't made it default because of that. Unfortunately I'm out of the US so further testing isn't possible at the moment, but once I'm back I'll look at it more. So far the big face of is Opera tabs vs Skyfire built in flash.
Much, much more faster than Opera or IE. Of course the pages don't look as good but they're still good.
This new release inspired me to install Skyfire again -- I hadn't been including it in my "UC" configuration, so hadn't used it in a while as I flash new custom roms.
For me, the great advantage of Skyfire is how well it handles embedded video (and similar content) that other browsers don't handle well or at all. I stream live .wmv video from my backyard-birdfeeder-cam, and even PIE doesn't support this MS-format video -- but Skyfire does.

What ROM and Manila version do you have?
I have the official 6.5 upgrade for US T-Mobile (Timor version) and it opens Skyfire automatically from the internet tab after using Skyfire's setting to make it default.
There is a Manila file you can edit that will change all the internet tab settings for the T-Mobile stock Manila version I know, because that was how I edited it then.
So I guess it depends on what you're running.

I was having a play with Skyfire 1.5 yestersday. I found it played the video component of Flash videos correctly, but that there's no sound! Has anyone else encountered and fixed this? I'm running the standard HTC version of the WM6.5 ROM.

It might also help to know which site's flash videos gave you the issue. Not all implementations are created equal.
I notice, on a sort of related note, that on thewb.com, sometimes the video and audio get out of sync. I'm not sure if this is a general skyfire thing or not, but I've always found thewb's flash player to be a little quirky, so I plan to test some other sites this weekend.

Skyfire has a server side and a client side--the browser itself doesn't actually support flash, the server grabs the content, converts it to something skyfire client friendly, and then transmits it to you. Google might be detecting where your skyfire server is instead of where you are.
Has anyone noticed how the Opera browser provided with the HD2 doesn'r reflow text correctly when you zoom in or out on text?
For example go to the bbc.com website and find an article on the main page. Then zoom in. It reflows fine. However if you then go into the actual story from the front page reflow to keep all the cahcracters on the screen rather than you neededing to scoll left to right stops working. Then when you go back to the main page the reflow is still not working?
I have tried this on multiple sites and get the same result ! I also tried another HD2 and the same thing happens.
The iphone and Safari does this without fault. Am I missing something that I need to set or is my experience different to everyone else?
I don't want to use skyfire because it comes with different limitations. Is the later version of Opera (v.10) any better in this respect?
I also notice that there isn't a Opera Mobile 10 for the HD2 !? Anyone know where I can get this?

Here is Opera 10 for the HD2. I don't have a problem with reflow on my device, but then again there are something like 10+ versions of Opera 9.7 floating about.
Have a look here for all the different Opera 9.7 versions, see which works best for you.
*Edit* I use version 35964, it seems to work fine for me.
Its dependant on which build your using......
the one on the t mobile stock rom was perfect.....
I just tried a cleanex rom and opera was not as slick as I was used to....
Im off to try an energy rom and see what thats like.......
Thanks for the information. I have a standard HTC rom and the phone is from the UK.
ROM version 1.66.405.2
Radio version 2.06.51.07
Opera Mobile version 9.7 Build 35627
I'll try downloading the latest version of Opera 10. Thanks.
Just one last thing. I updated my version of Opera so it could play flash with the Flash. Will this install put in an additional version of opera or overwrite the current one?
Does this version natively support Flash?

It will overwrite the version you have installed. I should think it plays flash, I am not certain as I don't use flash on my HD2 (I assume you mean 9.7), Opera 10 supports it natively for sure.
Thanks for the answers, I have just loaded version 10. Forgive the noob questions....
OMG, It doesn't have pinch to zoom !!!!!!!!!!! Reflow doesn't work because it is set to a double tap zoom and the text seems to left justify too much so the text is cut in half and you have to scroll over to the left! And the Zoom is way to high. I know you can set it to certain zoom levels but its one zoom in and one zoom out. Thats not very good in my book.
Also the settings available seem far less than there were with 9.7.
Also is there any way to change the default search engine from google?
Lastly, is there any way to set vibrate to happen when you click on a link.
I also went to youtube and it doesn't seem to play flash
Not sure I think version 10 is an improvement at the moment. Is there a thread somwhere that talks about opera 10 on xda?
Its pure personal preference, I tried 10 and didnt like it, mainly due to pinch to zoom and reflow......... the flash is tempremental... I got youtube working but other flash content didnt........
Theres no harm in having both 10 and 9.7........
In this case you can have your cake and eat it..........
For flash I'd reccomend skyfire........its quite slow and the ui is ugly and dated but it works 95% of the time as far as flash is concerned......... again though its all down to personal preference...........
