Verbose boot? - Hero, G2 Touch General

i love my hero, but the boot process couldnt be any slower..
And its very frustrating that it loads with a black screen and a animated gif, when i would like to know exactly what its currently loading, like a verbose boot.
On Mac OS X, when booting the computer one can hold command-V for verbose mode, witch looks pretty much exactly the same as most linux distro bootups, a long list of text feedback (loading part one... done. loading part 2... done. and so on)
so is it possible to add this feature (or enable it) on the modaco rom?
..i know it wont speed up the boot process, i´dd guess it would even make it longer, but it wouldnt feel as long if i could follow the boot process.

i second that, verbose boot would be cool. and would boost the geek factor at least by +7

i just realized that i could replace the animated gifs with custom ones, faking a verbose boot.
This could be quite funny..
like:
Boot -IEX [da=x2ar4] -V
Boot sequence starting...
Loading virtual enviroments... done!
Loading customized data... done!
Loading nuclear powercell... done!
Loading self destruct sequence... ERROR! no path to detonator
Loading done!
Configuring enviroments... done!
Configuring networks... done!
Configuring hack tools... done!
Retrieving access codes... done!
Configuring free internet access... done!
Configuring done!
Writing random IEMI... done!
Disabling remote tracking/bugging capabilities... done!
decrypting private user data... done!
Boot sequence completed!
>quickly displaying a snapshot of home screen<
>change to blue screen with text<: "Keyboard was not found, press F1 to continiue..."
now i just have to find a gif animating app for mac..

lol i like that idea. sounds would be possible also.
animating gifs is pretty easy with GIMP, if that is available for mac.
edit: i'm still interested in a solution for actually verbosing the boot sequence.

lol i threw together a rough proof-of-concept. use it as a regular update.zip if you want to try it. it is not good, it loops several times, timing is bad, text is no fun. but it works
as always no responsibilty for phones turned into gremlins, make a nandroid before, yadayadayada you know the deal.
you can also extract the boot.gif from the zip and drag&drop it into firefox to see what happens.
edit: took it down, nobody wanted it, was crap anyway. see a few posts down, did a better version.

just a heads-up: i am actually working on this. might take a few days, but i will try to make something at least decent looking... every help is welcome, especially with graphics. i could use a background, maybe some sort of grid. and if someone has or is willing to make something that acts as a movie-style fingerprint scanner, that would be awesome

I don't have them but I know of a few places I've seen fingerprint things lately:
http://lock2.wordpress.com/2009/07/27/ancient-system/
http://instinct-software.com/2009/02/pretend-fingerprint-scanner/ (near the bottom of the page is a larger screenshot)

yeah i found these also, not really glad with them though. i thought of something anymated, like a green glowing fingerprint with a "scanning" redish-glowing bar in front of it...

i decied to make this a new topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=582336
nevertheless i want to know how to get the console output on screen during bootup, so please make this thread a success

BUMP.
I'd like to know that too. Just like the good old linux boot would be nice.

a rom that instantly loads programs

from what I have noticed when you open a "app" in the iphone it loads a screen shot of what that app looks like then once the app loads the screen shot goes away and you can use the program. so is it possible to customize the loading screen for each program? so you open it once and it does the default loading swirly thing. then it takes the screen shot and when you open it after that it uses the screen shot instead of the swirl, and once the program loads it take a new screen shot and replaces the old one.
This would give the rom the appearance of instantly loading programs, which is what the iphone seems to be doing. So is there a cook out there that knows how to make this? (NRG28 I am looking at you)
hmm....minimize the apps?
That takes lots of ram
Now, I know I'm far from the average user. I've had two iPhone models (2G & 3G). I switched to WinMo for a reason.
I IN NO WAY WANT MY WINDOWS MOBILE PHONE TO FUNCTION IN ANY WAY THAT EMULATES THE iPHONE.
Sorry... Had to get that out of my system.
+1 f**k an iPhone
Can't see the point. What is it for - to cheat myself that my phone loads apps instantly while knowing well that it doesn't?

There`s probably an app for that!...
Guys, Guys...
Well, Look at below points..
1. Suggested Startup animations..
2. Loading a snapshot first
3. taking and saving a new snapshot...
This is kinda bull**** to me (No offense) Our WinMo processors are meant to be doing much more useful things instead... Well, I phone is kinda candy. I know. But it can never reach the raw processing power of WinMo...
If anyone wants iphone look, feel and functions.. Go.. Go buy an Iphone. Please...

Acer Launcher

Have a go at this. Seems to work really nicely on my desire

Not really, force closes after some secs and dialer doesnt work at all. And looks so poor.
Yep, you get an FC when you try and config it. Pretty pointless after all.
MOD EDIT: Please show respect for all members of XDA.

Whoa, bit of an extreme response!!
A bad case of CapsRage
This looks great. Although I'm not sure of the risks of re-entering Recovry yet once rooted and the phone is set up and memory filled.
I don't want to risk messing up my setup with trying to copy the necessary system files over.
I tried it without them, it looks nice, but i'm concerned. My notification bar doesn't show, so i can't actually see any notifications on my screen. Is this normal?
It just runs as a full screen app.

Suggestion : removing the boot animation

hi all,
Not sure I'm in the right section... please move the topic as needed.
I'm a little bored with the traditionnal boot animation and I think I would actually like having the android log displayed instead.
A bit like when booting a linux OS with a verbosity 3 or 4, you know?
One of the earlier speedmod kernels did show some of this stuff (partition checks, etc) while booting, but it was replaced later on with the first boot image (Samsung Galaxy S, in white on a black background)
It would be cool to see all the services start and the phone actually boot until getting the sim unlock pad and the launcher..
Would anyone know how to do this ? -
Reminds me of the old WinMo days where boot animations were the sh!t
Please search a little bit, there are a couple threads already discussing it. I know it's possible to customize it, whether you can show logcat style output I'm really not sure though.
oh well, I thought I had searched ^^
will try again, thanks for the advice!

Doc's online kitchen now has tons of awesome boot animation choices in case you're still looking or didn't notice those yet

Where to place and name mp4 video for boot animation

Made a mp4 video with adobe premier, jpeq's, mp3 etc.. converted to mp4, also converted to mp4 android using xiisoft to make sure. plays fine, just don't know what to name it or put it to use it for boot. placed it in typical sys/cus/res, wiped out bootan.zip and spc_an_final.mp3 no luck. any help???
while I'm at it... circle battery for elite II shows red when full. any zip out there with green circle when full?
and lastly... any keylock mods that work with elite II and launcher pro plus, can't seem to get rid of the "monolith" underneath when i flash.
Thanks ,
Randy D
the boot anim isnt an mp4. its a zip with a few folders of gif's and a big ol' text file controlling it all... dload one as a model and try and figure it out. i can help you out a bit fi you want.
I'll give you a thanks, I'm not trying for bootanimation zip combined with mp3... Built plenty of those. Trying to figure out how to open a 720p dolby boot build from jpeqs and vid... Premier will spit it out as mp4 or whatever i want... 24... fps... vid/jpg (can do interesting stuff with that) i tried naming it sequence1.mp4, spc_ etc... Have length "safe" 24sec.... trying to figure out what the os will recognize to boot. don't think you need txt file cause mp3 will fire on its own in resource folder... Help?
FYI I can lay the sequence down in a mkv (but those get big) or h.264...evo will read all of those but not a compatibility issue.... have it set 800x400 (24) 720.. most combos but just resets to default animation
hah i'm a bit confused on what you are trying to do. unless you heavily edit java and install a script that reads movies while the phone is booting (nearly impossible), you cannot run the boot with any type of video other than google's own android bootanimation.zip. is that what you are trying?
yeah. not new to this. just joined xda and won't let me post in "real" forum... cutting and pasting 50,000 jpg gets old on photoshop cs5. if someone had a handle on this we'd be doing some crazy stuff by now. looking to hook up with someone who is on this path. i figure tweeking the boot sequence is the first step, but i get lost in that stuff
hah ok then what exactly are you trying to do?
sounds simple, but i just want to replace the boot.zip with an mp4 video, but i think i need to be able to prioritize boot sequence... splash screen (if i have to) then boot video player. not sure what essential programs are needed for the media player to run... i would like to suspend all program boots till after the video plays. a "delayed boot" of sorts... i've done it on my computer. but first off i need to know where to put the sequence, what is the first resource folder the os opens on boot... i can start from there
oh i see what you are trying to do... the thing that in post 4 i said was nearly impossible... good luck. hope you know your java. hearing you did this to your comp is a good sign. this would be pretty awesome if you got it working.
Yea, again, you CANNOT play a video on the boot animation. The boot animation is s series of gif files controled by a txt file. It's technically not a video, just a bunch of pictures played together.
There are alot of things that are "impossible" that get done. Wimax on cm comes to mind. I don't know if it IS possible, but the OP obviously knows enough to tell that the boot animations isn't a video. He wants to make it be a video. Its just programming, why not?
OP, what about installing a barebones media player - something that will run in native Linux - and then write a script to run it from the hboot. It would have to be coded in to the hboot, I would think, but maybe. I'm not a developer by any stretch of the imagination, just trying to think outside the box.
Many thanks for understanding
austontatious-
THANK YOU for the post. You get it! I KNOW what a bootanimation is, I expected some of these posts. And I'm am going to try your idea... Like you said it is programming.. fact is the phone does turn on, the phone will play video, the phone does start with some assigned program. It's tweaking the the boot sequence or creating a new one(which would suck and not worth the headache) that i want. It isnt a hardware change for heaven sakes, which you could still do. again thanks for the idea.

Hiding virtual keys (reframe method) and UD 1.5b3

So I just updated to UD 1.5b3. This reset my settings back to having the double sized notification bar, which annoys the crap out of me, so I used Reditus2's method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1114069
I used this method for UD 1.0 and it worked wonders. After running this on 1.5b3 however I am now unable to boot up as usual (can still get to recovery mode and thus was able to fix, but wanted to share this). I get as far as the UrukDroid Loading... page, trys to load for about 5-10 seconds, goes black for about 1 second, and then shows the Loading page again. I have allowed it to sit on this screen for 10+ min to no avail. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to keep UD 1.5b3 without having the huge notification bar. Also wanted to give Reditus2 a chance to see this and maybe there's just an update needed to the scripting to resolve this.
I had the same problem with rc1
i gave up on reframing
at least the bar disapear when you lunch a full screen app
I'll try as well - but right, full screen works at least.
working like a charm for me on UD 1.5
have you tried this? - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139882
I've created UD 1.5 package with smaller top buttons.

Hi $aur0n I installed UrukDroid 1.5 and all worked perfectly! but today I installed package with smaler top buttons and now Urukdroid freeze while booting, it stops when in the botton of the display appears : UrukDroid 1.5 boot: switching to rootfs... How can I do? I don't want to reinstall the system from scratch.

Did update went ok? What has the message on top of the bar during update? What messaged you have seen during startup of device?
Anyway best/fastest/easiest etc. way is to restore rootfs from backup (RescueMenu) if you had one. Second is just to do quick reinstall of rootfs (your data will stay untouch).
@$auron:
As i never use it the search button, is there any chance of switching it off?
And wouldn't be 32 px a better solution, as normally everything alligned to 4 or 8 gets better scaled and painted on normal devices?
Otherwise, nice.

Hmm I've started with 28px but it looked a bit too small. I can try 32. I also don't use search button at all. I'll remove it...

Thank you very much for your quick answer. My update went ok, at the end of it on the top bar the message told me to reboot the device. But while rebooting my device (A43) freezed with the above message: UrukDroid 1.5 boot: switching to rootfs...
As I hadn't a backup I did a quick reinstall and now it seems to work well!
thank you again

How long did you wait?
I remember the first time I updated the framework with Fisha21's one, it took a while to boot up on the first boot. Apparently android was rebuilding the dalvik cache with the new framework.

32px height buttons, I've also made them shorter - 70px instead of 80px. Sadly removing search is not so easy (I don't know if I will have time to look further).
UrukDroid-1.5-32pxButtons.tbz2
Thanks for trying.
Don't hurry.

Yes (I still use ButonSavior - even with buttons on top, because they can disappear on some apps) - but less universal..
ps. I know where to remove search button (or any other) but system refuses to accept new framework - probably once again this ****ty certificates issue !
Thanks aur0n, the button package works great! !!!

32px work better, as now batterie and wifi are next to each other instead of ontop.
Have deinstalled buttonsaior, as this together with std buttonmode (longpress power) is enough for me.
Thaks again.
Hey $aur0n, thanks for the link to the package! Definatly going to try it as soon as I figure out what happened to my /data/urukupdate folder. Just disappeared on me. Whole /data folder is empty.

That's kind of unlikely - device would not work with empty /data (it would write a lot of new stuff in it during boot...)
I agree, that's why I was so confused. Did manage to find an answer on that one though. For some reason lost my SU permission for my file explorer so that's resolved. Don't suppose you might know why the kernel file isn't doing the auto-update/install once dropped into the urukupdate folder? The modified top bar you listed worked perfectly, but the Kernel file isn't automatically updating, and it looks like the new UrukConfig doesn't allow me to force the update.
