Hiding virtual keys (reframe method) and UD 1.5b3 - Gen8 General

So I just updated to UD 1.5b3. This reset my settings back to having the double sized notification bar, which annoys the crap out of me, so I used Reditus2's method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1114069
I used this method for UD 1.0 and it worked wonders. After running this on 1.5b3 however I am now unable to boot up as usual (can still get to recovery mode and thus was able to fix, but wanted to share this). I get as far as the UrukDroid Loading... page, trys to load for about 5-10 seconds, goes black for about 1 second, and then shows the Loading page again. I have allowed it to sit on this screen for 10+ min to no avail. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to keep UD 1.5b3 without having the huge notification bar. Also wanted to give Reditus2 a chance to see this and maybe there's just an update needed to the scripting to resolve this.

I had the same problem with rc1
i gave up on reframing
at least the bar disapear when you lunch a full screen app

I'll try as well - but right, full screen works at least.

working like a charm for me on UD 1.5

have you tried this? - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139882

I've created UD 1.5 package with smaller top buttons.

Hi $aur0n I installed UrukDroid 1.5 and all worked perfectly! but today I installed package with smaler top buttons and now Urukdroid freeze while booting, it stops when in the botton of the display appears : UrukDroid 1.5 boot: switching to rootfs... How can I do? I don't want to reinstall the system from scratch.

Did update went ok? What has the message on top of the bar during update? What messaged you have seen during startup of device?
Anyway best/fastest/easiest etc. way is to restore rootfs from backup (RescueMenu) if you had one. Second is just to do quick reinstall of rootfs (your data will stay untouch).

@$auron:
As i never use it the search button, is there any chance of switching it off?
And wouldn't be 32 px a better solution, as normally everything alligned to 4 or 8 gets better scaled and painted on normal devices?
Otherwise, nice.

Hmm I've started with 28px but it looked a bit too small. I can try 32. I also don't use search button at all. I'll remove it...

Thank you very much for your quick answer. My update went ok, at the end of it on the top bar the message told me to reboot the device. But while rebooting my device (A43) freezed with the above message: UrukDroid 1.5 boot: switching to rootfs...
As I hadn't a backup I did a quick reinstall and now it seems to work well!
thank you again

I remember the first time I updated the framework with Fisha21's one, it took a while to boot up on the first boot. Apparently android was rebuilding the dalvik cache with the new framework.

32px height buttons, I've also made them shorter - 70px instead of 80px. Sadly removing search is not so easy (I don't know if I will have time to look further).

Thanks for trying.

Yes (I still use ButonSavior - even with buttons on top, because they can disappear on some apps) - but less universal..
ps. I know where to remove search button (or any other) but system refuses to accept new framework - probably once again this ****ty certificates issue !

Thanks aur0n, the button package works great! !!!

@$auron
32px work better, as now batterie and wifi are next to each other instead of ontop.
Have deinstalled buttonsaior, as this together with std buttonmode (longpress power) is enough for me.
Thaks again.

Hey $aur0n, thanks for the link to the package! Definatly going to try it as soon as I figure out what happened to my /data/urukupdate folder. Just disappeared on me. Whole /data folder is empty.

That's kind of unlikely - device would not work with empty /data (it would write a lot of new stuff in it during boot...)

I agree, that's why I was so confused. Did manage to find an answer on that one though. For some reason lost my SU permission for my file explorer so that's resolved. Don't suppose you might know why the kernel file isn't doing the auto-update/install once dropped into the urukupdate folder? The modified top bar you listed worked perfectly, but the Kernel file isn't automatically updating, and it looks like the new UrukConfig doesn't allow me to force the update.

[Q] Bell - Any way to remove sys apps; add tomtom?

I just traded up from an HTC Legend to a Desire Z but unfortunately I have two gripes which are both due to Bell:
1) Preinstalled games and apps. Asphalt 5; Cyberon Voice; GPS Navigator; Kobo; Let's Golf!; Remote PVR; SoundHound; Tunes & Apps; TV & Radio; UNO; Zoompass. 11 apps that I don't need. 11!
2) HTC Locations is missing. Instead they want you to use GPS Navigator which is $10 a month. No thanks!
Anyway my questions are:
1) Is there any way to remove the excess apps without a full root? Ex: with VISIONary + another apps?
2) Is there any way to get HTC Locations back? I see it in some of the system settings, but can't actually launch it.
not too sure about htc places, but to remove those waste of space third party Apps all you need to do is run visionary. once you've done that, load up Root Explorer application and navigate to /system/app/ directory. here you will find those pesky Apps and games, but be careful with what you delete. some of these apk's are critical to htc sense. good luck... let me know how it turns out.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using Tapatalk
Thanks for the reply but as with my Legend, it's all back after reboot. :-(
Sorry, I currently just experienced the same thing. I think this occurs due to the apk remaining in /data/Dalvik-cache/ files. I would suggest deleting the files corresponding to the .apks you remove and repeat the first process as well.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
That seemed to have solve the problem. I just rebooted and they did not return. Let me know if it works for you.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
No go. I deleted from /system/app and /data/dalvik-cache but after reboot, everything is back.
Maybe you did a power down and then turned it on again - since they have quick-boot now (aka sleep mode) it doesn't actually power down or restart the phone, causing it to appear as if the changes stuck when they didn't.
I remember reading that you need a true root to get rid of sys apps on HTC phones, but I also thought I saw something about doing it from command line on a PC somehow.
The practice of preloading uninstallable demos and useless apps is unacceptable.. ugh
have you checked the G2 forums ??
This same Q for this same device has been previously asked and discussed there

Agreed, it's going to be kinda silly have the two sets of forums. On the G2 they've figured out loads of things like this already.
The new HTC phones have a good system protection thing going on.
Basically each time you reboot the phone it checks to see if the contents of /system has been edited (apps added or removed etc etc) then if it has changed it will reflash it back to stock.
Basically you can root using "visionary" and make any changes you want, but as soon as you reboot it will all change back.
That being said Modaco has now come up with a method for removing apps permanently but not adding them.

That was the original story, but I think it's been debunked now, hasn't it ? It doesn't revert things to normal once you reboot (as proved by Paul's program which can delete built-in apps), but merely prevents you from writing to the on-board storage.

not quite
Pauls method basically tricks the phone into thinking the app was legitimately removed therefore it doesn't think there is an issue so won't reflash it.

I don't think that's right though. Paul's method just fools the phone into deleting the app as part of a supposed update.
There is no check to see if anything's been changed when the phone boots, as far as I can tell from the G2 forums.

It doesn't erase those though, it's just that when you "change" them via the tools, it doesn't write to the internal storage, it's just caching the changes in RAM. So it reads the cache and uses the changes. When you reboot, of course the cache is flushed, so the changes disappear.
They used to think there was a "revert to stock on reboot" thing on the G2 too, a few weeks back. No disrespect, but this is an example of how out of date "we" are here on the DZ forums, compared to the G2 which has been out a few weeks now.

hmm, I am still not convinced caching would hold it without significantly lowering perfomance, plus why the very very long boot times when you do make a change and then reboot?

Try asking about this on the G2 forum if you like ...
On the caching thing, there's more in the Wiki - http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Intro . Specifically :
For anyone interested-- despite what the blogs are saying-- THERE IS NO "ROOTKIT" and THERE IS NO "RESTORE ON REBOOT". What *is* happening is that Android thinks it's writing to the eMMC (memory card), but it is not. What you are seeing as a successful write is just the cache

Because that's a REAL reboot
The fabulous fake "5 seconds boot time" is just a hibernation trick, a feature called "HTC Fast Boot" (= power off hybernates instead of really "powering off").
Check the G2 forums, this has been confirmed by HTC.
When you press "power off", the phone DOESN'T power off, it just "hibernates", then when you power the phone on again, you see the "amazing 5 seconds boot up"
If you want REAL power off you have to REMOVE THE BATTERY

So how long are these very very long boot times??? Have had android 2.1 take about 1 minute to load up normally on a 600mhz processor, so surely 2.2 wouldn't take much longer than this?! ???
Anyway, back to the question (in a way)...
Is TomTom actually available as standard on the Desire Z? As I'm sure I read somewhere that it was Route66 or some other software with a similar name, not TomTom...

[Q] Different unlock screens?

Not sure what style lock screen my android install uses but it's the one like a rainbow shape that you drag downwards and it's awful as I keep finding the phone unlocked when I take it out of my pocket.
I'd like to change the lockscreen to either what I think is the Frodo one (sideways sliding icons for lock and volume/speaker mode?), or the X10 one which is like quarter circle swipe.
Is there some app (free ideally!) that will let me do this or a manual way I can do it if there's a source for necessary files (without too much grief).
I read that if I delete the htclockscreen.apk file then the phone will revert to the froyo one (as I use a froyo build), but when I try that with a file manager I can't delete the file - presume it's a permissions thing or something?
Thanks for any help!
ETA that most lock related apps I see in the market seem to relate to disabling locks rather than anything to change the one you already have.
Forgot to say I'm trying out Lockbot at the moment and it sort of works but it seems a little hit & miss.
In particular when you unlock the phone and it normally makes that little click sound (if you haven't turned that off of course), it sounds more like a machine gun before the lock screen comes on, and that worries me a little bit that there's something not right going on.
You could try a-lock from the Market, which is somewhat like S2U2
You could flash a cyanogenmod rom like this onetycoon cm7 comes with 4 different lockscreens ..or try simply lockscreen from the market..
Had the same issue of phone unlocking with the "arch style locker" so bought widget locker, which works perfect, it allows you to have different styles of lock screen & add widgets, cost next to nothing, I'd recommend it.
www.appbrain.com/app/widgetlocker-lockscreen/com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker
But if you really don't want to pay for a lock screen, I've attached a different lockscreen for you to try.
Worked fine for me before I bought WL, see my sig for rom, but as always when changing system files, use at your own risk, tho there shouldnt be a problem.
The LS with 2 circles was extracted from a htc dhd build (free), the other pic is WLocker (paid)
Try if you like... don't try if you like, just an option
I feel CM7 may be your best shot, I use and love it! Very easy to customize.

Thanks for the replies dudes.
Will have a look at A-lock. And Simply Lockscreen (or did you mean it's simply called 'Lockscreen'?). Not being facetious there - just clarifying!
Kam333 - thanks for that file mate. Will check it out definitely.
I am now trying Wlocker as Lockbot was too erratic. Wlocker seems to be ok so I might end up buying it but I like to try out options first before deciding.
That Rom is tempting too I must admit but the bit about the high drain on BT standby concerns me a bit as I leave BT on all the time.
Decisions eh! But I appreciate all the suggestions, thanks.
Not sure how to use your one Kam - when I run an installer against the apk file it only gives be an option to UNinstall it, which I guess means it just maybe has the same name as the existing one. Am assuming once an uninstall is successful then it will allow me to install it, but why won't it let me remove the other one first?
I've tried that but it failed. Similar problem to not being able to delete the standard apk file from its directory either.
Hey
You need to push the 2 files to your system folder,
For the build I'm using, I placed the files in a folder [DL_update/root/system/app]
This goes on the root of your sd card then reboot,
You should check on your build thread for the name/path of the folder "dl_update" is specific to the build I'm using, the rest should be the same tho.
If you have any probs let me know.
Kam
Thanks - have tried doing that but with a file manager I can copy ok, but paste is not available for some reason when I try to overwrite the existing ones.
Thought I'd do it via the PC as well but that won't work as I can't see the folder structure on the phone itself, only the SD card.
I'm now trying Lock 2.0 which 'would' be great except that when locked, you can use the hard keys (home key and power key I think) to bring up menus, some of which can basically unlock the phone so despite having a better slider I still find it unlocked in my pocket, and doing stuff like trying to dial my mum while I'm having a swearing contest etc.
I can't find a menu option in the program to disable these menus but I'm sure they wouldn't have been stupid enough to make a decent lock app that is full of holes like that and couldn't be disabled?

Hey,
the lockscreen is a system file, you wont be able to modify/edit systems files without root permissions, you'll need to use a root capable explorer such as Root Explorer or ES in root mode.
or use the method in my last post.

[Q] G Sensor Calibration in 2.3

So, I'm running MDJ's CM7 2.6. I've fixed almost any issue I've had. But there's something really annoying me, my g sensor has a small offset. And as far as I know there is no built in calibration tool. I've tried some I found in the market, but those didn't work, still an offset. I was reading a lot and found AngelDeath's thread about a possible fix. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902129
But this is only for Froyo. So I was asking myself if there is any possible solution for Gingerbread?
And if possible, would you mind to add your AK8973Prms.txt? It can be found under /data/misc. Maybe this is a possible solution..
Edit: Please only if you have 2.3
Thx anyway
Cheers
The g-sensor from what I know has been fixed since I posted about the fix, the first question I have for you is what kernel are you using? I know that MDJ had removed the calibration setting from most of his roms, I dont know if this rom he did also, but when you say there is a offset, can you explain what type of offset and also if you compensated for the slight angle that the phone has due to the camera?
Frm what I read in another thread, the ak8973prms.txt values can be altered, and saved. also you can delete this file and upon reboot I believe it gets recreated..Also did you happen to backup your bma150_usr file and try adding mine in place? Or is that whats giving you the small offset?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803242
This thread has info about the offset. It's a little old but offset adjustment still works. (freeze was fixed in kernel)

I'm using the stock MDJ 10.4. And he did, I'm pretty sure.
Well when I am playing for example doodle jump I have to tilt my phone to the right, right side to the floor (not very easy to explain, hope you know what I mean ) otherwise, if I hold my phone normal this doodle thing always jump to the left. It's not very much, but it is annoying..
Yes, that was already told somewhere, but in fact i dunno what values should be in there. It gets recreated, but if I am not wrong it will be wrong again.
Haha, I've read your thread, my problem is that such a file doesn't even exist, so I was not sure if I it is a good idea to just copy it in there.

But thanks for your help mate
Hi,
Have you found a solution to this, or am I too late? I seem to be having the same problem on an otherwise fast and stable build. I'm using TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 v3.7.0
For the info, the parameters and some values in the said file are completely different, so I don't know if I should replace them.

Release candidate bull archos gen8 CM7

Hi,
I would like to reply on the Dev Thread, but I'm not allowed to do it...
I installed the Mod. with no Problems.
Here my experience with it :
- for the First Time since I have my Archos 101 (1 Year), I can go to deep Sleep
On Stock or Uruk, I never had it. That's great !
- the UI is very responsive, better then Stock
- I installed the Market, did the Fix, but there is a lot of missing Appz.
- there is a strange Noise after a few Minutes in Standby and after Wake up. I don't know what it is, never heard it before. The Noise sounds like "Klack"
- Is there a possibility to remove the Phone Things, like the Icon for Phone Net ?

The market fix, indeed doesn't work. We will take care of this in the future.
The popping noise is when the device goes to sleep and comes out of it. For testing it is a nice thing to have when it keeps popping I know something is getting it out of sleep. However it shouldn't do that, so we see what we can do about it.
We were looking at those phone related things, but where afraid to remove it right now. We don't know yet if it will brake some other things if we remove it.

Hi Divx118,
thank you for your reply and, of course, the great work.
I have new Info: to boot Uruk from the AnoaBoot, I made some changes in Uruk.
The first Time I made a mistake, so I had to do all from Beginning.
After that Uruk works fine, and after Boot CyanogenMod (new), the Market was Installed (I think the Prev. Downloaded Zip was still there), and it Updates itself.
I did not the market fix and there is a lot more Appz.
For the Phone things, for me it will be enough, if I can remove the Icon in the statusbar.

Hi Divx118,
thank you for your reply and, of course, the great work.
Bye

Yes, if the zip is still there it will unzip and install to /system/app on boot. The phone related things will be looked at in the next release.

@nicusasch:
What changes did you do in Uruk, to get it running from Multiboot?
Hi Fzelle,
I found a Howto here in the Forum, I didn't have the Link, but I have a Word Docx, where I copied it in :

[Q] Remove Camera Click Sound

Heya, new to fiddling with root files but really wanted to get rid of camera click. Followed advice about renaming camera_click.ogg in terminal Emulator using:
ADB shell
SU
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
mv /system/media/audio/ui/camer_click.ogg /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg.old
(source: www droidforums net/forum/droid-hacks/23107-droid-remove-camera-click-shutter-sound html) - sorry new poster not allowed to post url
Now have issue when open stock camera and vid in Motorola Atrix (gingerbread 2.2.2) where:
1) camera opens, but have lost all previous images.
2) camera takes silent shot
3) camera 'locks' open and can't return to 'desktop', can't view image taken,, can't access menus etc
Basically camera is stuffed...
is there a solution, is there code to go back and follow some of the other advice in here etc?
It is a setting. What's the point?

it's a setting what's the point? Thanks for taking the time to reply. I did mention this is all new to me. I asked a question because i do't know the answer. It's a swttibg whats the point is hardly helpful.
To anyone else, i'd appreciate any help or advice. As i mentioned i'd just like to undo what i've done usibg script i found on another forum. looking forward, hopefully, to hearing from you!
have you tried to add the following line to local.prop file located in /data?
ro.camera.sound.forced=0
If you don't have the file then just create the file and add it, otherwise append it to the end of file.
File permission is: 0644
Good Luck
I never heard of adding ".old" on the end of the file. I always add ".bak", then reboot. Works everytime.

I was on my phone at the time (tiny keyboard) and was trying to succinctly say that if you open the camera app and touch "settings", there is an option to quiet the click.
When I first read your OP I didn't notice that you identified Gingerbread as v2.2. You are confused. v2.2 was named Froyo (frozen yogurt). Gingerbread is v2.3. My answer relates to Gingerbread. If you are actually on Froyo, I don't remember if the setting was available on that release.
So, in Gingerbread silencing the camera is a setting and there is no point performing internal surgery.
Yep, ok, noob blunder. Novice blunder, amatuer, beginner whatever blunder. Glad you all got a giggle, and thanks for pointing it out. I was told at the shop it's Gingerbread. The About phone states 2.2. So, if that makes it Froyo then great, i've learnt the basics today. Thanks for your help again!
Well re- the settings, froyo or otherwise, yes there is a setting to turn sound off. You turn it to off and it still makes the click sound, volume can't be altered. Hence diving off the deep end and into something i know very little about - internal surgery!!
Live4nyy - is there a simple way to rename to .bak (you see my level of expertise here - none! - in asking).. forward some script for me at all?
or
CSharpHeaven that sounds gr8... any way to explain to a complete novice how to do that?
I thank anyone who sticks with me to reply after this MUCHLY as you know you are dealing with a friking novice
Seriously....why would you want to silence your camera again?
Do you have root? If yes, then you can just use any file manager that has root access, ES File Explorer works I've heard, and just go to the folder where the sound file is (/system/media/audio/ui) and just select to rename the file and add ".bak".

i actually dont want or need to silence it again. my query is how to restore my camera to a mode where it is functional bcs at the moment its stuffed. If theres a simple string to go back that'd be ideal.

Ok, got 'root explorer'... so simple just to enable R/W and rename.. Thanks. Changed to .bak . Seems better, actually appears to take photos and has more functionality than after i ran that script... but
I don't know what that original script did. Here's what using my built in camera is like:
1) Turn Camera on. Opens, appears normal. Take photo fine. Thumbnail (link to camera roll) in bottom corner as per usual, which disappears after a few seconds as per normal.
So far so good.
2) After taking another photo decide to click on thumbnail to open camera roll. Camera Roll opens but says there are no pictures to display. return (via 'back' menu button) and the thumbnail of the images is there again. Ok, weird.
3) Try take another photo... nothing happens, wait a few seconds and camera switches off back to ;desktop'. Try open camera again but no dice. In fact all phone functionality gone, frozen, locked up, including menu buttons below screen. Put phone to sleep by pressing rear button briefly. Press rear button again to awake. Unlock swipe is slow to respond (a few seconds) and then back to main desktop screen. Can once again open camera. Repeat process from dot point 1).
4) next time go to camera roll, this time locks up on camera roll (which has no images to display again). Sleep and wake up camera, slow swipe unlock, can take photos again when open camera. repeat step 1 - 3 again!
5) Sleep, wake up phone. This time straight to gallery instead of camera. Gets stuck telling me it's loading media files. Frozen.
6) sleep- wake - slow swipe unlock. This time to video. Same thing as camera. Frozen.
I could go on.... but im sure the idea is clear!
used root explorer to simply remane camera_click.ogg to original name. Same as above
Tried camera zoom fx app incase it was the built in camera app. This won;t even open - well, it starts but then says i need to force it to close.
Does this need a factory reset??!
Ta
Have you rebooted? Maybe try and go into "Manage Applications" under the "All" tab and find the camera and "clear data"?

Thanks L4NYY.. yep had rebooted. Tried clearing data but all the same
Had a quick look in the internal storage DCIM folder..All files appear to be there. The one vid file has a play button icon. The .jpg's have the android robot icon. I don't know what was there before. Trying to open the files from here freezes the phone.....
Connecting usb and viewing dcim shows that any images taken since the change to camera_click.ogg appear unknown thumnails in the PC explorer..and can't be opened on the PC via USB connection or when stored locally on the PC itself 'can't display this is an empty file' . This is probably all irrelevant but might be useful to someone, somehere...
Have just noticed today that battery was going flat very quickly. Realised since rooting and using that script (can't decipher which) that location services are no longer working, hence apps that provide location services are continually searching and draining battery. Yes i can turn those services off, but wouldrather resolve the issue!
I'm thinking more and more like factory reset Any thoughts?
Just factory reset. Used Astro File Manager to backup apps before hand, which for interest worked well (although did have to reinstall one by one). Of course Appstore keeps a lsit of purchased apps as a failsafe for thsoe.
After rest, reinstalled apps, including Root Manager. Simply followed Live4NYY's advice, renamed camera_click.ogg to camera_click.ogg.bak
All issues described earlier resolved. Camera functional and silent.
just goes to show sometimes you should ask noob questions. I tried following instructions on a post to avoid annoying the experts with a mum-mum dad-dad question! Anyhow, thnaks to live4nyy for taking the time.
Ciao
The ".bak" just stands for "backup". It will essentially hide any file/app and keep it from running (which in turn frees up RAM). So if you had a system app that you don't use you can just add ".bak" and it would be the same as freezing it. It's much safer than deleting files and apps as you can always go back and remove the extension (and reboot) and it will be back to normal.
