[TUT] How to start an Earthquake with your Touch Pro 2! - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Themes and Apps

How to start a small Earthquake with your Touch Pro 2.
Step 1: Go to Settings, and set Phone to either Vibrate, Vibrate and Ring or Ring then Vibrate.
Step 2: Have someone call the same device that was set to vibrate and be prepared to hold on to something!
Yes. This was sarcasm Sorry if it wasn't your type of humor, but I just wanted to get across the fact that the vibration for the Touch Pro 2 (for Sprint at least) is insane. If my Ringer Volume isn't at it's max, the vibration will drown out the sound for the Ringer.
Also, if I'm in class (I'm a college student) and I have it set to vibrate, every single person in the class knows I have a call/text. A little ridiculous with the class is about 70 people.
I've posted a thread on PPC Geeks and people have similar problems, but no luck finding a fix and/or making a fix. Anyone here feel the same way?
Anyone know of a fix or can maybe experiment on a fix?
(Again, sorry if this wasn't funny, I thought I could add a little humor to the issue, lol)

Here's the right fix: don't have your phone on during class -- listen to the prof instead (some humour and sarcasm back atcha).

I'm just going to assume there is no fix. lol

I seem to remember some time ago, when searching for Touch Pro (1) Tweaks, that there was a registry key that could be edited to change the vibration level. Who knows, it may still work. Though if you find it and you go that route, be sure to read all instructions. If it doesn't work, then you will either have to edit it back to the original, or delete the key (in the event that the key was not there). In extreme cases, you might have to do a factory reset, so backing up is reccomended (Microsoft Myphone is good for backing up nearly all unrecoverable things, like address book, pics, documents, texts, etc.
As I rarely have vibrate turned on, I haven't really run into this problem, yet. But this may be a solution worth looking into.

If anyone could do that, it would be bloody effing awesome. I've been looking everyday, searching in threads for any fixes but nothing. I've tried myself a little bit but I'm not a...expert, lol at the whole registry things.

Ha! Same thing happens to me in class so I just set it on silent and deal with not being notified of anything. I've never had a phone vibration that actually startled me, but it happens.

There's a couple of registry fixes I've seen for this, it never really bothered me. I just open my phone up like a laptop and put it on silent when I'm at work.. if anything comes up it shows up on the screen.
I'm sorry I can't actually provide you with those registry fixes, you'll have to spend a night searching through the forums or google.
BUT http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-vibro.html
This program here might help change the vibrate pattern making it not as long of a vibrate cause I know my text messages do a solid vibrate for a good 2-3 seconds it feels like..
Hope this helps.
PS.. Why are you awake in class anyways, I slept through all of my classes.

lmao very good question. Maybe a very good answer is that the vibration wakes me up! lol

Solution: Silent :O

Don't forget this is a "business" phone and as such people like to pretend to be being considerate by switching their phone to vibrate but still want people in the room to know how important they are in that they are being contacted all through the meeting.
Sarcasm aside I would say the vibrate on mine (T-Mo TP2) is weak to say the least. Often don't notice its vibrating... So if you find a setting, I'd like to ramp mine up!

Wow. You are a genius. Seriously.
Anyways, I suppose my sarcasm in the first post opened a door for a little less productive sarcasm. Anyways, I have still been searching and have found nothing.
It's interesting to know that the T-mo TP2 has a lower vibration! Very peculiar. I'll keep looking through my registry but so far I have come up dry.

i think the vibration is strong for my tmo tp2. i work at wal mart part time and it gets very busy and loud. when i get a message the managers that are next to me can hear it vibrate through my pocket! so i've been leaving it on silent lately.

Maybe there was sarcasm meant back, but not sure it should be classified as "a little less productive" as, seriously, why do you need the vibrate active in class anyway and can't just switch it to silent?

LOL...yea good sarcasim! I cant put my phone in vib during meetings either, just too loud. But I think it is the truth in most of the pda phones! Best way to deal with this is put in silent.

wow to think this is a problem is kinda funny. i totally understand how the loudness would be a problem for some but for the first time in a long time with a mobile phone i can have the device set on vibrate and actually know the device is vibrating. last time i could use effective vibration setting was back in the RIM 950/957 days maybe even older skytel pager days....
good luck in your search and if you find a way to make it even stronger send the info my way

Did anyone have success with the .cab?
I'm also seeking a way to immediately toggle to SILENT instead of VIBRATE using Rhodium Keyboard Controller - but to no avail. Help anyone?

Got a new Telus TP2 here, and I came across this thread looking for a way to BUMP UP the vibration. I've missed every call since I've got this phone because the vibrate is almost unnoticeable... compared to my titan which gave me a jolt when it vibrated.
Anyway, to be helpful, I am going to suggest you guys look into PhoneAlarm ( hxxp://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html ) , which I used on my titan... I think it has settings to make the vibrate longer or shorter (Custom LED color / vibrate pattern per alarm ). I would have checked it before I posted, but it may be a while before I get around to playing with it. Good luck all.

For me it's always been more of a good thing than a bad thing.... Especially when I'm at the mall or somewhere loud and I'm moving. A weak vibration just isn't cutting it. So yeah, you should probably just go to silent mode if it's too strong for your liking. Not too hard to figure out.

Kill lights

Is there a way to stop/disable the flashing lights, particularly the one on the right hand side of the unit?
...my wife hates them flashing and I cannot keep the device in the bedroom at night!!!
Easy one this to solve, move the wife out of the bedroom
I have been looking for a long time for registry hack or a button to disable her alltogether, or to the very least turn off the Voice/sound function, but to date I could not figure it out!!!
Is there anyone out there who can help. I am sure there are millions of men who would be willing to pay for the solution.
My god yes, im so glad im not the only one the wife goes mental with the falshing lights at night
Why not use an indellible marker to paint them out, or for a less "permanent" solution, use a couple of pieces of black insulation tape?
Cheers,
Steve.
put it in a thick winter sock to hide the flash?
Tweaks2k2 was always good at this, unfortunatly it doesn't support turning the LEDs off on the Universal yet.
I'm sure it will only be a matter of time though.

The wife cant moan at me as her phone is a samsung e720 which has a really strong blue screen glow.
Anyway if she does moan I wont let her use it in bed when she wants to check her ebay
Put it on charge, noticed last night that lights stop flashing and only orange charge light comes on and does not flash while on charge.

The bluetooth light still flashes though
Then disable bluetooth
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Builtin\AllLEDMgr" should be the control strings for the LEDs
Try to change something there
BalooDK is correct.
Whilst doing some research for VJElectrify yesterday, I came across this aswell.
I really don't recommend it, but navigate to
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Builtin\AllLEDMgr"
and rename the dll value "AllLEDMgr.dll" to "AllLEDMgr.dllVJ".
Ensure the value has been set and soft reset. Ta da! No leds.
However, highly unrecommended since you can't tell when bluetooth is on.
Obviously rename to original name to reverse this effect.
There are other less invasive ways to achieve this, but this seems to work well.
NOTE I strongly recommend you export this registry branch before modifying it. You can cause problems in this area of the registry by accident. It's also easier to just import back the old settings when the wife is out of sight!
V
I tried editing above registry value and the lights stoped.
But after a while ... The lights start flashing again ...
I really really don't understand how.
Then I tried to delete the whole "DLL" Value. After a soft reset, the lights where gone. But again back after a while ...
How is this possible. Does WM5.0 have ARR? (Automatic Registry Rebuilder
P.S. Where is the .dll in explorer? Not in my Windows or system dir.
Need to make VJSTFU-woman One day...

Hey!
me and vijay555 are trying to solve the wife problem very hard, for some time now...
It seems, that at first, the project should be renamed to "Kill wife" instead of "Kill lights".
There seems to be a solution for that...
buzz
Try applying the Gucci_HandBag_v0.5 patch. I find that it provides a temporary solution.
However, as Buzz says, we've found better results by twisting her display area back on itself a couple of times. Her buttons will seem to light up, but the rest of the unit will provide adequate functionality without the irrating bugs. Just don't forget to enable the HKLU > IHaveAnAlibi registry setting first

(IDEA) Burglar alarm

My idea is as follows ... taking advantage of our g-sensor devices (Pro and Diamond) someone could make a burglar alarm. When someone takes our device has to put a pin, unless it makes sound an alarm ... I've tried ... but do not know anything about programming. What you think?
That is a good idea i must say
But who would leave their precious diamond unattended
Lol but it wud be pretty neat, maybe catch out your friends who may decide to start looking through your text messages or email lol
that will be very cool soft. maybe one of the best for diamond.

Accurate! that's the idea ... Could serve to maintain the bride, friends or family away from your phone.
The idea would be to move that (after 5 seconds for example) if you have not had the pin (or just turn the device) is activated the alarm .. And the pro also led the ...
Maybe, some developer could tell me how I can make this program ... My knowledge is very low but I like to learn ....
it would be nice, but the sound of the diamond isn;t that loud, so i wonder if it will be usefull
It could say, "Don´t even think about it" when someone takes it
this is exacly what i was searching for some time ago...
should be deadsimple to build... i can image...
and as far as the volumeisseu.. if the sound sounds horrible and the burgular cant deactivate that sound.. he will go nuts and leave the phone right where it was..
There is a program named WIMP, when you text message $WIMP**** you will get a text message back with longitude & latitude of your phone, which it will get from GPS. It also sends within the text message a google maps location with the current location of the phone.
If the phone's sim is changed, it autmatically sends the same sms message to a back-up number that you'd have configured too ...
****= a code that you configure yourself, lets say 0000
These are all good ideas actually.
We should combine lots of these ideas into an 'Anti Theft Protection Suite' with options such as warn if SIM is changed and send GPS co-ordinates, the WiFi I.P. addresses the theif has connected to, sound alarm when PIN has not been entered, and better yet..
Maybe even have the phone silently take a picture with it's front camera and send the image via MMS or WiFi so you can identify the person.
Its actually a longshot and theres lots of work and programming involved in this but if such a program existed, I probably would buy it.
For now, we can stick with the basic yet effective idea of sounding the alarm if the PIN is not entered.
But just one thing to note though - you would have to be careful when you turn the anti-theft software on; if the phone is in your bag or pocket, it will be constantly moving thus prompting the PIN screen

Questions and Answers Section for BA Forum. Post Your Questions Here.

@All,
As a celebration for my 1000th post, I decided to open a new thread based on Tweakman's idea, which seemed to work very well in the Development and Hacking Section. The idea is simple, a single thread for all Questions, Problems, and Concerns regarding Blue Angel. This includes, but it is not limited to:
*Problems with Flashing.
Can't get your device in bootloader? Did it freeze during flashing and now it doesn't get past the 4 colored screen? Are you a complete noob and need some guidance as to how to flash? Etc.
*Have questions about which Rom is best?
*Want to install software but don't know if it is compatible with your BA
You get my point. All the questions that I have seen/answered over the past couple of months are just repetitions of posts, threads, and things that are readily available on the wiki or in other threads. However, people are either lazy, don't know what a Wiki is / where to find it, or just flat out don't know how to search (or read the forum rules for that matter). Having something general (in this case a sticky) that says "Hey, if you have a question, you can ask here" should draw enough attention and start minimizing the number of new threads and posts opened by users (both new and seasoned). This way, we will be able to keep the development threads a little cleaner and smaller... hence making the site's search function work a little better in the process.
@Seniors,
Kinda like the Q&A team, I will need your help in trying to keep the influx of questions to a certain level by answering them as we see them. None of us are logged in 24/7 (or at least some of us aren't ), but if you guys see a question, please try to answer it. I know that xplode, Chef_Tony, markanthonypr, red_hanks, sun_dream, imatrix, +Que_PPC, motisu, and others normally try to keep this under control, but if we centralize it and contain it, we will have a cleaner forum.
Reserved for future use.

Hey homam,
Thanks for kicking things off
First of all, which OS were you having problems with? This is important because it could have been a bug in a rom that could have been fixed in a later version.
@mark,
I know I can count on you, buddy I need help from the mods as well though. I cannot redirect posts to here and/or close threads
My BA, keeps turning on from standby, by a light shock! I maen, if you press the Power button, and then you knock gently on it's back, it turns back on!!
I've set to "Lock all buttons except the power button", However, I still have this issue.
Well, I must confess that once it dropped off of my hand, and it's the result of that...
Any ideas?
by "it turns back on" i assume you mean it wakes up from stand by, it doesn't really start like after a soft reset, right?
since the BA's only battery activated wake-up is in the cradle and we are not talking about soft reset, my first guess is, the battery is not to blame.
have you checked whether you can use your camera at all time? i mean, the camera_detect does not usually run at all times but if the camera connector is a little lose, from now and then it could "discover" the new camera hardware and wake up, that is unlikely for normal devices, but if yours had a crash before...
you could refer to this site for checking possible hardware reasons:
http://www.land-of-kain.de/ppc/mda3/disassembly/
the hardware things aside, there are also many possible software reasons for the device to wake up on:
- update of titanium weather
- automatic email checking
- cell broadcast
- if bluetooth is on
- if beam is on
- automatic update of any software...
plus of course the usual:
- incoming call
- incoming text message
- incoming mms
- upcoming calendar event...
so please check the possible software wake ups first to make sure this is really a hardware issue, because that would be a shame, that could be tricky to solve.
or let me put it this way, if it is really the moving that wakes it up, you have the first BA with accelerometer
EDIT: last but not least, it could only be a bug, maybe a hard reset or change of the rom could also be a way to go, since spontaneous waking up is a known bug for BAs
Chef_Tony
If there was only a way to hack the hardware and make this work at least on Edge. I can live with everything else, but its a shame paying for a full unlimited Internet service and only getting G connection Sighhhhhhh
Ok, I had to let that frustration out !!!!!!

Wow! Tony! I really appreciate your complete answer. I mean it.
Yes, as you correctly assumed, I meant wake-up. It just wakes up and continues the routine WinMo operation; no soft-reset occurs.
It's less than a year that I've replaced the battery with a new one. I remember all the funny things used to happen when the old battery was dying. But non of them were similar to this one.
It can't be the Camera. Well, I'm able to use it all the time, and the "camera_detect" has been always loaded in the processes whenever I've checked it. About the looseness thing, ummm, I'm not sure. I tried to knock on it to see if it's more sensitive than other parts. I think the upper part of the device is more likely to wake it up by an easy hit (like knocking). but it's the whole upper part, not only the camera section nor the camera button.
Unfortunately, the software possibility, is unlikely to be the problem:
I've used many ROMs on my lovely BA which 3-4 times of them taken place since the wake-up problem.
The software and the usual reasons you counted, do wake it up. but shakes, too.
Finally, to be honest, I'm agree with you! This is the first Blue Angel with accelerometer. yeaaah! I did it!
I bet my friends that I can wake my BA up, without touching any buttons or screen! It's fun this way, but I comes to be annoying when I put it in my pocket or just put it on a table! and it wakes up... consider the forced battery consumption, unwanted screen taps if I don't lock the screen. God bless A_C! and... .
I know it's a hardware issue (((((
@raizaM: My Thought.... Have you ever taken it apart? One of my BA's had 3 loose bolts inside. All 3 were from what I think is the Radio/Antenna part at top. However, in my case, I had a rattle going inside. Thats why I put it apart. You might have something loose inside, causing a connection to arc when you knock on your phone. If you do deside to open it, there is a tutorial on the wiki on how to.

I had that same issue a while back, but with only one screw (also from the same area as yours).
@raizaM
Just to knock off Chef_Tony's theory out of the table completely, try to erase camera_detect.lnk from \Windows\startup and SR your device. If Chef was right, then your issue might be gone. However, I would follow markanthony's advice and take it apart in case Chef's idea doesn't work.

Those were the ones that were loose on mine. 2 of them were rattling inside the phone. I still can't believe they didn't cause a short circuit. You don't need to go down into the camshell area. Do you use the sliding keyboard? If so, you could have a bad flex cable. But, don't worry about tha for now. Just remove back cover and carefull inspect for loose bolts. Don't over tighten them.

It seems that you have the backlight settings set to dim/turn off too fast. Go to \Settings\System\Backlight and modify the settings in there (particularly the ones labeled "On Battery Power"). Then, soft reset the device (stylus on the bottom).
Hope this helps.

It seems that you have the backlight settings set to dim/turn off too fast. Go to \Settings\System\Backlight and modify the settings in there (particularly the ones labeled "On Battery Power"). Then, soft reset the device (stylus on the bottom).
Hope this helps.

not the setting, it got black scren, its dead screen after running wifi or application, suddenly goes dead, black screen,.
Have you tried with another battery? It sounds to me like your battery is about to die. It won't hold the heavy battery consumption of Wi-Fi and heavy CPU usage while on Games. Try with another battery. Also make sure you followed Egzthunders suggestion to change your Power Settings. If you still need help, post back and include more info about your device, such as, what version of Windows are you running and how old/new is your battery.

The mother of all bugs ...

I've been happy to look past most issues, knowing that a fix is on the way.. however, I'm not that happy right now.
I left my phone upstairs whilst I've been down here in the front room - and suddenly got an MSN from my friend asking why I called them and didn't say anything....
So just gone upstairs to investigate and found it's been randomly dialing people in my phone book
Even worse, I'm on vacation in the UK now, so most of my contacts are Taiwanese - meaning £1 a minute... it only stopped doing it as it's used up all my credit
The phone was just sitting on a desk. Locked. Nothing touching the screen or anything...

Wow that sucks! Are you using a custom or the stock rom/radio? Have you contacted HTC's support?
that certainly sounds bad!!
the only thing I had that was slightly similar was that when I firsts got the phone, I HATED it because the screen was too sensitive. I had sat and watched random 'ghost' screen presses that had resulted in a text to someone, various programs being opened etc.
luckily, I have installed some screen fix cabs and don't suffer any more but it was certinaly freaky to watch
Belive me or not, the exact same thing happend to me today! And that wasnt the first time.. Ive never mentioned that because I thought it was accidentaly. My bro came today, asking what I wanted.. I hat no clue what he meant. He showed me a call from me at a time, I wasnt at home and havent got my phone with me! It was still left in my room charging.
The number WAS dialed and there was a sms from my bro asking what I want.
A few days ago I got a sms from my other brother asking my why I called him. There was indeed a outgoing call noticed in history, but I never called him.
So I think if more people have this, its realy a bug. My brother said, it was a very short ringtime, not enough to answer the call.
My ROM is 1.48 HTC orginal German
Stock 1.48 Singapore rom.
Actually, thinking about it, last night the screen did keep lighting up randomly (as in when it should have just stayed off).
Thing is though, the phone was locked. And I doubt the sensitive screen issue could randomly do the swipe. Lol.
Will email HTC now.
I'm on the stock 1.48 rom and mine has never done this. Worrying though.
Would be an absolute disaster if my business clients started getting random calls off my phone without me knowing about it.
Do keep us posted on this one.
WB
Ok just noticed the screen wasn't locking - I'd forgotton the first time you turn on the phone you need to manually lock it (another bug they haven't fixed yet) - so it could be down to this over sensitive screen issue.
Making sure it's auto locking would then solve that.
Maybe a fly landed on it or something!
Just before I read this thread, I read this article on BBC news. I am not saying that is the cause of any of your phones auto dialing, but it is still something to think about.

Haha - my gf was one of the people it called!
The phone sees dead people (scary)
While talking about the phone doing stuff.. on its own.
I ve seen it happen. i had it nex to me on the desk.
Suddely the phone came on and it was browsing and moving.
Ive installed the latest rom update from HTC and the CAB to reduce the sense of the touchscreen.
Ive been told that the HD2 has this hyper responsive touch screen and it would even react to the smallest things.
I think it would be wise to hard reset your phone and leave it clean, see what happens. Then start installing applications, must be an application thats gone horribly wrong.
Sounds like a bug to me...
Did you check the room for big hairy spiders...?!
Didn't get this ever.
What I do get (almost every time) though, is that I can hear my interlocutor, when he calls me, prior to me picking up the phone (and no, I don't have any psychic abilities!).
P.S.: capacitive screens can are sensible even to grease, so pay lots of attention to that to.
P.P.S.: may I suggest a thick screen protector, like the ones from Zagg. You should definitely take a look!
I'm pretty sure it's just ghosts, are you staying at a haunted house in the UK?

I'm pretty sure what you are seeing here is the non pressed key bug, but its happened over a contact, so instead of pressing a random key, its dialed the contact. I've had the same thing happen. My Device has been confirmed as faulty by HTC. Just a thought guys.
See this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595655
Thanks, installed the ghost key fix Was never aware that I need this because my phone is "nearly" accurate in typing.
Will have a close eye on my phone for the next days.
Grr - this takes the biscuit now. I installed the touchscreen sensitivity fix some time ago, but just got woken up by music from my phone - turned out it had called Thai Airways booking line and was on hold ... thats another 22 minutes of international calls ....
Maybe a trojan horse?

That's interesting. That implies data is being sent to your phone by your telco before you pick it up and your phone is quite happy to put it through the speaker while it's still ringing.

hero annoyances

i tried searching the google for solutions to these, but couldn't seem to find any solutions in the "other" forums that came up in the results. i was hoping someone here might have an answers.
coming from WinMo, the biggest annoyances on the hero for me are:1) when i'm playing music off the phone and i receive any sort of notification, the music pauses for like 2 seconds plays the notification sound pauses then resumes the music instead of the just playing the notification sound over the music the pause happens even if i have the phone set to vibrate mode...just no notification sound..this is extremely annoying. 2) also i noticed the power button and end call button are the same button which is ok, but when i'm leaving voicemails i have a tendancy to just hit hang up when im done however i noticed that if the screen goes off during my call and i press end call it just turns the screen back on instead of ending my call...extremely dangerous when leaving messages..
does anyone have any solutions or workarounds for these?
thanks!
The AOSP 1.6 roms solve the issue with the end button, as it is the ONLY way to hang up a call in vanilla Home Android. Notification w/ Music? Didn't test that yet, but the 1.6 roms are definitely worth a try. I'll get back to you on the music notification thing. Hope this helped.
EDIT: Apparently it solves both issues. Hope I helped you with this. If you like Sense UI, the AOSP roms aren't for you, they do away with Sense.

Can you clarify this a bit? What do you mean by it is the only way to hang up a call? Are you saying in AOSP the screen just stays on for the entire duration of the call?
if you press the "menu" button after the screen shuts off during a call, it'll turn back on, at which point you can either press the red button, or the "end call" button on the screen.
Or, if you pull the phone away from your ear and see that the screen is off, and want to end the call, hit the red button twice in quick succession, and it'll turn on then hang up within a second or two
The idiot who decided to make the power button and the hang up button one button should be shot, IMHO! Yes there are workarounds and ways to handle it but they require too much thought and it's just way too easy to hang up on somebody.
Also, the interrupt the music (or podcast) to play the alarm is dumb too. Additionally it's not like they pause the music rather the music runs onward and, if you happen to be listening to a podcasts where the words are important you can miss key concepts and have to rewind.
I've flashed the 2.1 ROM with HTC Sense. I would not put it beyond the HTC guys to have messed it up and made it so that the alarm still interrupts the music. The power button thing is definitely not solved in this ROM.
But by far my biggest complaint is improper handling of AVRCP. 2.1 is better but it's still not even good. If I start Google Listen and am listening to a podcast then I can hit pause on my bluetooth headset and it works. If, however, I navigate away from Google Listen then the pause button doesn't work at all. Often it'll start the HTC Music app and then I'll have both the podcast AND music playing. Brilliant!
just a thought but maybe you should have looked into the phone before purchasing. and being rude and saying that the 2.1 isnt any good is really insulting to all the devs that have worked really hard on that rom considering that it was built well before the kernel source came out. and im sorry but if you cant remember to hit menu and then end instead of just end then maybe you should just get a flip phone. as far as the notification over the music goes, gee lets think about this, your listening to music and you get a text hmmmmmmm maybe you want to be NOTIFIED that you got a text.
my advice. Either go back to a winmo phone or get a flip.
i don't think he meant to insult the developers..the hero is definitely a great phone and androids is awesome, but there are bugs and what better way to solve them them to point them out and discuss them.
its not so much that you cant remember to hit end twice or press menu and then hit end, but its the fact that you have to take the extra step. and text messaging thing, yes it lets me know that i have a text, but i would have known that if it played the sound concurrently or if it just flashed the lights, but ok that's not major issue i understand some people like to hear the sound separately. however, if i have the phone on vibrate and am playing music, it still pauses the music when a notification comes even tho it doesn't play the notification sounds..that's just plain ridiculous.
i mean if i'm paying for a high end phone i kind of expect to manufacturer to have done research and testing in UI and human interaction to address these kind of issues.
btw i found this app in market call "proximity sensor" that kind of fixes the end call problem. when you are on a call it uses the light sensor to detect if you have the phone up to your head and it dims the screen and turns it back on when it sees light. the only hickups are if you are in a dark area you have to hit back to get the screen back on as there wont be any light for it detect and also it doesn't turn off the screen just dims it..so might kill your battery a bit quicker, but all in all i tihnk it's pretty nice.

There's a good number of phones like that. Treo 700p, 755p, 800w, Samsung Rant, Sanyo SCP-3100 just to name a few. Actually, the Blackberry that I have for work is the only phone that I have used recently that has a separate power button.
I think I had a Nokia that had a separate power button.

Actually, I like having to hit End twice. When I had my Treo phones (700p, 755p and 800w), I would always hit the red end button to turn on the screen. The problem is, if the screen goes off while you are on a call, I accidentally hang up on the person because I was trying to turn my screen back on.
I guess it is more of a preference.
So many things to say... First off wtphoto, I was not really given an opportunity to check out the phone at the time. Here's the deal: My last phone just broke - the screen would not turn on. Now for a long time I've been wanted to switch to Android but honestly I was waiting for the HD2 and Android to be put on it. I was unemployed at the time but just got a job up in Seattle. I was flying out to look for a place to live and I needed to keep in touch with head hunters, the contracting agency, etc. when, as I said, my phone died. So I bought the HTC Hero on a whim rather then going with another WinMo phone. OK. So stop assuming things and ask questions first.
Being rude?!? Hardly. You ain't seen rude yet. I was merely voicing my opinion. As for the "devs" as you say, we're not talking about HTC developers here - we're talking about ROM cookers and yes they work hard. But I don't think they are re-writing drivers or anything like that.
As for hitting menu first or whatever, listen, it's a legitimate complaint. It's foolish to make the button that turns the screen blank and locks it the same button that will hang up on the current call. Pick any other button!
As for the proximity sensor thing - actually the 2.1 ROM has that. However I rarely, if ever, put the phone up to my ear. I use a bluetooth headset - actually a stereo headset. Besides, the proximity sensor app simply and always blanked the screen and locked it. Let me repeat. I use my bluetooth headset. So I take out my phone and I dial the number. I don't even move the phone anywhere close to my face. The proximity sensor blanks and locks the phone. And often I'm about to talk to a menuing system where I'll have to hit 1 for English etc. To me the proximity sensor serves no purpose because often the first thing I need to do it disable it.
Perhaps unlike you wtphoto, I have ears which are capable of hearing both music (or spoken text) AND an alert at the same time! Point is this should be an option - you choose your way and I'll choose mine - OK?
But ajaholic is right - I was not dissing developers I was stating the problems I was having with the phone - much like the OP. You don't like my "tone". Tough ****! Get used to it.

in rebut,
if you are unemployed why did you buy a $580 phone "on a whim" to begin with, I know for myself if I am spending more than $100 on something I am going to know as much as I can about the product BEFORE I purchase. second if you want to *****, ***** to HTC they are the ones that designed the phone, the devs here can only do so much. And yes if you actually read through the 2.1 thread toast and lox did have to re-write A LOT of code to get it working with the hacked up kernel that is on the CDMA hero.
I will agree that it would be NICE to be able to set the lock button like you can on the blackberry's, but it really isnt that big of a deal it took all of about 5 phone calls to get used to hitting menu then end. instead of just complaining why not try to get used to the way the phone works.
addressing the notification issue again, HTC built a phone that a MAJORITY of people liked. They can not design a phone just for you. deal with it or sell the phone and buy a winmo.
as far as your tone. untill you start compiling the kernel and cooking up ROMs, why not just be thankful that there are people out there willing to put in as much time and work as flipz, toast, lox, chuck, TTG, MoDaCo, GBhil and the rest and then release their work at no charge AND support the work that they do so that we as a community can enjoy our phones just a little more. Just an FYI on the Notifications and the sounds pausing - I think it is because our audio buffer is too small. Should be able to do something with it now that we have a kernel. I haven't touched the source much since it came out, but I'll see if I can at least track it down.

Wonderful attitude there bud "Well everybody else likes it (because anybody who complains we call an idiot) so why don't you just shut up and get used to it". Regardless if HTC built the phone or not, surely the software could be taught to be flexible and - I'd say - reasonably intelligent (unlike some posters here).

Well it was not $580 - it was used thus around $250 and I also got out of my contract. As I said I had the option of getting another WinMo phone and a 2 year contract or HTC Hero used with no contract. I took the later as I wanted Android and I figured I could update to other hardware (Nexus, HTC HD2 or whatever) and perhaps the provider down the road.
