getting a mytouch, few questions. root/board/sense/2.0 related - myTouch 3G, Magic General

so i'm ditching my G1 because it barely works anymore. apparently theres something wrong with the motherboard and thats why any rom i install fails after a week and makes the phone unusable (even cranogen's rom died on my phone)
anyway i'm hoping to have better luck with the mytouch and with researching lately i've seen all this stuff about the 32a and 32b
As far as rooting goes, to my understanding, i just use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556200
Then toss whatever rom i want on the SD and i'm pretty much good. That right?
From my understanding, the 32B is the T-mobile mytouch and is exactly the same as the g1. which dosn't make me too happy. But if this is true, does it have anymore space for apps or is it the same 70MB bull****?
second question. I love the hero/sense ui and i'd love to use it on the myTouch. So i know the question people hate to hear but if without having to read through hundereds of post i'd like to know which one is the most stable and has the most space for apps. By stable, i mean i can install it and use it for 2-3 months with daily use. And i have about 100Mb of apps on my G1 so i'm looking for a rom with a lot of space.
And last question, If i want to unroot and go to the official 2.0 software when it comes out (doubtful, but i may) are there any guides to go about unrooting, searched but couldn't find anything that was very clear.
Thanks in advance. now if only the phone would hurry up and get here so i can stop using my g1 that has to reboot every 3 hours.

The myTouch has more space for apps, over 100MB, but I don't exactly remember how much. I've had the phone for a week now and it's definitely better than the G1, performance wise.

if you are running cyanogen on your mytouch, you have about 290MB to download apps. Try running Qtek's Hero v1.8, just make sure that you have your three partitions. If you want to upgrade to Eclair (2.0) if and when it comes out, I suggest you wait until a rooted version of the ROM is released because if you just upgrade, you will be without your Superuser access and you will just have to root your phone all over again. But I have had the mytouch since it first came out and I had the G1 before then. It definitely blows the G1 out of the water in terms of performance in my opinion. Though I still use apps2sd, the extra memory was very handy before the phone was able to be rooted. I had about 100 apps on there and I still had plenty of memory left.

thanks for the replies. the 290mb is amazing. I'll probably be running one of the hero roms, and thanks for giving me a recomendation. I just love the sense UI so much.
Glad to hear about the boost in performance as well.
So i take it that the rooting process is just like i said since no one mentioned that. Really looking forward to getting this phone and finally ditching the G1

How to un-root a tmobile MT3G in about 4 minutes. I followed this and it worked perfectly.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how-to-unroot-your-mytouch-3g/

thank you for that. got it bookmarked now. hopefully getting the phone today. can't wait to get started on it. looks like this will be a much better experience than the g1.

The Post here has a full guide of Rooting/Unrooting and links to a guide for Goldcards. There is another guide for rooting without goldcards but it doesnt show how to unroot or return everything back to stock. Hope this helps.

Quick tip from a Magic user:
Don't update your phone (which will probably come with Cupcake 1.5 as stock) to Donut 1.6 using OTA, if it asks you to. Rooting Donut is a much lengthier process than rooting Cupcake, especially as you're wanting to run a Hero/SenseUI rom.
As you seemed to be hyped about memory, evil D:'s nano SenseUI is apparently a v lightweight version.

I got it used from craigs list so the guy had already updated it to 1.6.
And i saw your posts in the one-touch-root topic. any chance you can explain to me how to get it to work on 1.6?
and thanks for the recommendation for the hero rom.

Relentless Rooter didn't work for me, I used it to access fastboot and then flashed to an Engineering SPL.
As far as I know, an Engineering SPL will let you flash to any ROM using the fastboot > recovery > update.zip method as Engineering SPL allows you to use fastboot with the android sdk.
I'm not really qualified to explain to you 100% what to do, but I did this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576768
You would just cange the official ION rom with a senseUI rom, i think.

questions about roms and rooting your device

hi,
i have a 32B my touch 3g.
im planning on rooting it using this guide.
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting
have a couple of questions, do i have to delete everything off my SD card?
can this mess up my phone permanently if done wrong?
now questions about roms.
i know theirs several different ones.
i dont really care about the looks, i just want the ROM that makes your mytouch a lot quicker, ive heard its possible to make it faster.
just wondering which ROM that would be and how would i go about installing it?
i just want a clean, quick, stable rom. its not that bad right now, but a little quicker wouldnt hurt.
i also heard some roms have internet issues / bluetooth and that stuff

Looks like you and me are in the same boat. I've already rooted my MT3G and have loaded Qtecks Hero rom on it. It's nice don't get me wrong, and I feel like one of the lucky ones being that I don't have any strange issues with my phone. The only thing that drives me nuts is every task takes about a 2 second load time.
Also, I find it rather poor to release a rom and call it working and stable when people are still getting blurry screens, dropped sms, no mms, Lost GPS and so forth. To me, that doesnt sound ready.
Im really thinking about load the original cupcake and saying good riddens until something thats actually stable come out!
i don't think any of the hero developers have called their roms stable. the only stable rom right now is cyan's rom.
another method of rooting your device is the one click method. it's straight forward and easy to follow. check out theunlockr.com for more info.

32b Mt3g sense ui alternative?

Hey guys, sorry if this turns out to be a topic that's been brutally repeated.
I've been lurking around here for a while, i've tried many roms and from all of them, found that SuperMagic (eugene373's) was quite possibly the fastest in my case. (Thank all the devs for their contributions, you're all amazing!)
Now though i love hero roms, i wanted to see if i could get a magic rom that had senseui, much like our distant 32a cousins.
I've been reading around and the only alternative i see at the moment is by QTeknology's 32b port over. (Which right now doesn't support wifi or bt, hoping that changes)
I'm currently running 1.6 cyan 4.2.5, because i can't get over the speed problems with hero roms.
I was wondering what my fellow mt3g users are doing as an alternative for not having a release from HTC for senseui?
did you fallow the exact specs that Eugene asked people to use like the swap partition and a class 6 sdcard an ext partition on the sdcard... you will most definitely not see a sense/hero ROM that is for the mytouch 3g tmobile phone cause we got screwed with the 32b board which a insignificant amount of ram that is needed for the sense ui to run fast I liked hero_over mt3gv.2 that was what I used to use but phone got stolen so I decided to try 1.6 out and liked it enough to leave it but I fallow the hero builds closely as I plan to switch back over some day
Yup, that's my Achilles' heel, i still have the stock SD card. Yeah. the 32a board having more memory makes the 32b seem like a jib.
I'm doing the same thing, waiting for something to come close. I did try Qtek's port, as i said earlier.
Quite possibly the fastest that i've ran into. If someone can get Wifi working with it, i'll settle for that build or one like it. I hope Someone gets it working!
you can always do hero. it's basically the same thing as senseui. qtek's is one of teh best and the only thing not working is bluetooth.
You sure about that? i flashed it yesterday and wifi wasn't working. it turns on but doesn't connect.

Are you talking about his senseui port, or the actual hero? His 1.8 hero cuz that is what I am running right now. I have wifi connected right now as well.
Oh! Different rom then, hehe. Come to think of it, i haven't tried his Hero rom. Only his port.
I should give it a try. I was getting ready to give it another try and play with the apn settings to see if that was the problem.
Edit: Qteknology Hero (WWE Dump) for G2 Magic-Voda 32B v1.8 Swap <-- This one, right?
Edit again: That was it, i'll give it a try, Thanks for hte heads up, Tazz.

yes. The apn's are not a problem with the wifi. you are going to have to add the apn so you can have your data with this rom, however. He doesn't have the apns set on this rom. So you should right it down if you do not know your apn settings. It'll save you some time.
I just took a look at his apn's conf on the hero rom, it's not in there, haha. I guess i'll just copy them there too. I assumed that they would be in there, but i guess they wouldn't be, this IS a vodafone rom, anyway. Thanks again for the heads up!
You can try Trojan final from Eugene, i havent tried many hero roms but im liking this one, its pretty fast and stable. I used overclockcpu and swapper in combo with it. It works like a charm. I do recommend putting the droid stock 32b over the original image as it will make it less woody and more hero.
anyone else experienced trojan final? im still waiting to hear wich one is fast, trojan or qtek . trojan does have everything working tho..
I've tried both, but on a very temporary basis. They're both pretty fast. But for some reason i still think supermagic was faster than both of them. i think it's probably because it doesn't have the default rosie. I dunno. They're both good, just not the kind of speed i'm looking for. when i pop settings or open the browser, i'd like something that's snappy.
Maybe i'm just too used to cyan mod at this point.
The only other senseui mod that was snappy was qtek's port for magic senseui. That's why i was really hoping wifi would work, but to no avail.

he has bluetooth working, but only if you flash over the 32A radio and recovery image. If people don't know their way around fastboot, they will brick there phone.
I can't even get fastboot to work lol. I'm thinking i have a driver issue. I boot into fastboot, says "fastboot usb" i tried to change the bootscreen menu, all it says when i try to flash over the first image is "waiting for device"
So i figured i wouldn't even mess with customer radios and different board radio/recoveries.
I don't even use BT, so i dont see a need to bother changing over to 32a setup.
Can someone PM me some 32b roms? or where you get them for Mytouch.
I wonder if i use the 32b to 32a radio method eugene has, if i would be able to flash 32a roms (32a rogers sense ui magic rom).

That wouldn't do anything for you. The advantage of 32A is that it has more RAM. 32A ROMs would run slowly on a 32b.
If i'm not mistaken, it requires less memory to run a 32a sense ui rom than a hero rom.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

even if thats true, i dont think either would run acceptably well on 32b. the mytouch came out over a year after the g1 yet tmobile didnt give it any more ram they just made it look different (and added rom but its not even worth mentioning). TMO just put the same turd in a different toilet, the mytouch just doesnt have the ram to handle any type of hero/sense ui.
Im really curious as to how much it costs tmobile to offer 192mb ram as opposed to the 288mb ram the magic has. They better have saved a hell of a lot of money.

G1 Needs Root and Froyo in Vegas. Any takers?

Hey guys.. Basically I'm still sort of new to Rooting, and flashing, and doing all these other things. I have the Nexus One and I was told it's much easier to root and unlock it than something like the G1. then doing the Danger SPL also has me worried.
Basically my mother has the G1, and she used to love it, but between using my N1, and it just getting older she's really starting to complain she wants a new phone.. The 1.6 Email client sucks compared to 2.2 & I'd really like to throw Cyan 5.08 or CM 6 on her G1.
Basically is there anyone in Vegas that would do this procedure for me for a small fee? I cant risk messing it up as she needs it for work n such. PM me if you're in vegas! Thanks!
Froyo isnt avalable for the G1 yet, there are a couple of smashed together builds, but nowt with everything working.

Your better off doing it yourself its not hard. (That's what she said)
And after your done rooting I suggest flashing a 2.2 (Eclair) ROM.
because their the most stable and fastest.
Well, basically I've rooted and flashed many rom's and updates on my Nexus One. But I had someone helping me from Androidcommunity.com and made it easy because we had a few snags and I'm new to fastboot and never done much in command prompt either.
I was told it's much harder, and easier to screw up when rooting a G1. and doing the Danger thing so i can use something like CM5 is even riskier.. Thats why i'd like to just get someone to do it.
as long as I follow instructions it's not to bad is it
If you look around in the development section...you'll see fireats got versdions of cm5 that don't require the dangerspl.
Also, if your mother is needing this phone for business....don't go messing around with it.
Oh and if by email you mean exchange, check out Touchdown in the Market.
This is the site i used when I rooted for the first time. it was easy.

Rooting the G1 is actually easier than a lot of other phones. The aforementioned 1-click method is probably the easiest way to go. Even though I no longer use my G1 as my daily driver, I still flash it pretty regularly. All my friends with G1's usually have me root their phones. So far I haven't bricked one yet so u should be all good. I'm in Vegas too so if u have any questions, lemme know. Having said that, you should be all good.

MT3G 1.2 Senseui help...

I have used the search ahead of time, and was unable to find anything that explained what I was looking for, beyond a redirection, which I was unable to follow, so I did my best.
I am familiar with flashing, since I started with my Kaiser a few years ago, so I'm not null, but I do like to have a reliable bit of help to make sure I get it right the first time.
Now for my question. I really enjoy Senseui, and would love to have it on my MyTouch 3G 1.2 which is rooted, currently running the stock Fender ROM, and pretty much the same as the day I bought it. I've noticed there are a few ROMs in the Sapphire section that have sense, but require the 1.76 SPL and the 6.35.x.x radio.
When I look into flashing those, I continually find that my phone (MT3G 1.2) either can't or won't accept these requirements. The closest to a solution I've been able to track down mentions using a Hero recovery. I've exhausted myself trying to figure this out, I constantly search for updated ROMs, and any possible updates that would make my day, but I'm not seeing it happening, so I'm coming to you all for some help.
If you know how to get a Senseui ROM on to a MT3G 1.2, and can explain it, redirect me to a thread I couldn't find, or some other form of helping me out, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Again, my apologies if this is an unnecessary post, but I have used the search button, several times.
Here's my phone info, as it stands now...
Sapphire PVT 32A Ship S-ON G
Hboot-1.33.0013 (Sapp31000)
CPLD-13
Radio-2.22.23.02
I personally don't think flashing a new Radio or Recovery if you don't know if it works isn't worth the risk. However, there are two Sense UI ROMs compatible with the Mytouch 1.2 located here and here. It's disappointment that there are only 2 Sense UI ROMS, I wish there were more.

Yeah that..
Not quite Sense UI
But Try CM6R2 with the Vatsense theme+Fancy Widget or if you want weather animation Beautiful widget+beautiful live.. He has the stuff to make Launcher pro look like Rosie, but ADW now has a Rosie theme in the market(Slide sense)
Someone please explain to me why SenseUI is so special on a device that it is not specifically designed for it? Really. You won't have bluetooth and in some cases, camcorder, wifi, gps, etc. If you want a stable device use a rom without SenseUI.
But if you insist just use one for the G1.
I haven't even bothered to port anymore over because I got so tired of the private messages asking me how to get bluetooth working, how to make it faster and how to install it. I'm not going to lie... I enjoyed getting $25 in donations but it just wasn't worth it so I gave it up.

the only thing i like about Sense is the flipclock+fullscreen weather animations(i used CR_slide for a day and never got around to trying your port between superD and CM5)
If I understood Java and all the Android programing i would start porting roms over to the MT3G 1.2 but i seriously cant even successfully make a ADW theme in Eclipse

And you realize that there are apps that do that instead of having to have the full rom installed, right?
Okay, thank you all very much for the quick and thorough answers. I guess the reason I like the interface so much is because a lot of my friends have EVO's now, so I kinda grew used to seeing that, and I like how simple/clean it all is, and I was hopeful it would translate to being equally nice and useful on my little screen. Sigh, guess I'll just wait till T-MO gets some better phones, and hopefully that's only as far away as September, but I'm not holding my breath.
On a side note, I think that's my biggest upset with T-MO too, their Android support is quite lame. All the other carriers are rushing to get froyo to their users devices, and all we get is 'soon' over, and over, and over...
Anyhow, thanks again guys!
Yeah i listed the app i know of that does the animations *beautiful live*
As for sense ui on your 1.2 dude just wait the mytouch is upposed to get official froyo and possibly their version of sense *slide rom*
It might be worth the wait if you want

I really hope that we get a mytouch slide/ sence ui update but I honestly doubt that they would even bother with going through all the work to debug it for our phones.
So I know that this is completely off topic but is there any way that we could do this to our 32a 1.2s? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=580486
I know the answer probablly is no because someone besides me would of figured out if it worked by now but I guess it never hurts to ask.

Android 2.2

Ok..as some of you already know that this week there was an official announcement that the MyTouch 3G is getting upgraded to Android 2.2.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the both the MyTouch 3G and HTC Hero have the same 528mhz processor....and actually the HTC Hero has a bit more internal memory than the MyTouch 3G.......
So why is it that Hero is not getting Android 2.2. We all know that Android 2.2 is possible thanks to CM6 (Which I'm still running stock ).
If MyTouch is capable..why not the Hero?? and why am I complaining....well not that I don't appreciate CM6...however...SPRINT has neglected its HTC customers..instead they try to push EVO and EPIC..nothing wrong with that....BUT the HERO still could have had 1 last good run and ended with an official Android 2.2 release.
just my 2 cents

That's the reason why. I wouldn't mind upgrading to the EVO, but I just upgrade to the Hero back in June. If I knew Sprint was going to drop support for the Hero, I would have just waited a few weeks and gotten the EVO.
With that being said, I'm glad Darch brought CM6 to the Hero.
But this means a sense 2.2 port to our phone is even nearer right? This should help the wildfire port building?

I was following EVO since its early development and wanted that phone...however 2 months before my EVO was released 3 months before the EVO was released my HTC Mogul died...and so without knowing a definite date on the EVO I had to make a decision so I ended up getting the HTC Hero.
I'm slowly itching toward wanting to root....but not sure of a definite way...and now that they did a maintenance update on the Hero...not sure if that is going to impact rooting it and installing CM6.
If I root and install CM6 and decided its not for me can I go back to stock??

You can always go back to stock by running the RUU from sprint.
Are there new procedures to root and install CM6 since the maintenance update recenly...can a one-click unroot program like unrevoked be used first to root an then add cm6?
sorry for the noobish questions...I trying to learn as much as i can before taking the plunge.....
About the only program I really care about is Sprint Navigation..since I'm going to root and flash a new rom any way i can get it back?

You can totally get sprint navigation, what you will lose are any HTC apps and Widgets...but there are plenty of alternatives on the market....
I bet once your phone is rooted and you can install root only apps like wireless tether and set cpu you will have no interest in looking back! Let me know if you need any help!

You also don't have to run cm6. You can run any of the custom 2.1 roms and keep all the HTC widgets and everything you're used to. Only difference will be your phone will run the way it should. Super fast, no lag, completely customizable, and dependable. Cm6 is the newest, but the other 2.1 roms are a little more stable and friendly especially for someone new to rooting. The best part is tho, you can switch any time you want at your pleasure. So try whatever you want. Goodluck with your rooting and Rom flashing. I think like most others, once you root and run these custom roms, you'll wonder how you ever got by without them.
Cheers

AMEN! CM6 is fantastic. Run Launcher Pro with the $2.99 widget upgrade, and buy Beautiful widgets for $1.99 and five dollars later you have sense. I held out for a long time on rooting, but it really is the way to get the most from the Hero. My upgrade off of Hero happens later this month. I might go with the Epic over the EVO. But, unlike the hurry I was in to drop my HTC Touch Pro for the Hero, I really am in no hurry to upgrade from the Hero. Great little phone because of root!
I love CM6! I run the Extreme Blue Mod, and my phone rocks now. I did install Gapps because that was my preference.
There is a navigation application in the CM6 build, it's not Sprint Navigation, but, it works very well, and like was said, you can probably download the apk for Sprint Navigation if you like.
I am finding that I don't miss HTC Sense at all. I'm thinking that it was the sense stuff that made my Hero so slow in the first place. I have not overclocked, and my phone is faster than it's ever been.
once you root and flash cm6 you wont want to go back to stock. i said the same thing as you. when i was getting in to rooting and flashing roms.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful information...actually I will need a bit of help I know in theory that I should do the following:
1. Make a backup (Which program should I use?)
2. Root (has anyone used unrevoked app?)
3. Download the CM6 image to my SD card
4. Install from SD
I these are very general steps..however..I want to fully understand what I'm doing.
Thanks again everyone!!!

+1 you can definitely get sprint navigation and also, I agree that it was sense and all its bloat that slows the hero down! LOVE cm6!

1 - download rom manager from the market once rooted and it will prompt you to flash clockwork recovery...very easy to use...
2 - I would go with the thread on here: how to root sprint cdma hero 2.1
3 - download cm6 to the root of your SD card
4 - after you have flashed clockwork recovery you can load the rom right from that app
I would do a bit more reading on rooting your phone so you are sure you are comfortable with the steps....let us know if you need help

I'm currently running cm6. Super fast!

I downloaded the CM6 root, and it was faster. I just didn't like the integration software, reminded me of the Samsung OS. So, is there any way to get a root that will look like the Evo? I am not worry about HTC Sence, but I just like the layout.
Thanks,
Dan
Thanks to the reviews on this thread, I just upgraded to CM6 on my Hero and it is AWESOME! Battery lasts forever now even with the data left on. I wonder what kind of inefficient code HTC put on the stock OS that was constantly draining the battery and causing high CPU utilization?
I had upgraded previously to nfinite's ROM but even that slowed after a while and caused me problems. I had managed them for a while by using Juiceextender to keep data from being active all the time, but even that got me maybe 12 hours of battery life. Now I barely have 1 bar gone after 14 hours!
Highly recommend anyone take this on and breathe new life into your phone. I was able to restore even some of the Sprint apps using Titanium backup. Not sure if I care to try to restore Sprint Navigator. I found that it was good but Google Navigator is at least as good, if not better.
HTC HERO!!
I'm only a couple weeks away from my upgrade eligibility and i'm looking forward to getting the EVO. I'm still on a stock HTC HERO. WOULD LOVE TO ROOT IT, but I was told I can't being that my phone is on the new build # ending in .7. Now is there a way to root this phone ( EASY WAY WOULD BE GREAT ) ? I would like to try it before I put my HERO out to pasture. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED !!!!
STOCK SPRINT HTC HERO 2.1 Upd 1
Build # 2.31.651.7
Yeah, its been done and there are a few threads, but why bother at this point?
