To be honest, I'm not quite clear either, even after searching, and I've spent many, many hours in this forum. It would be nice to have a clear definition of Manila vs TF3D vs Sense, because all three seem to be used interchangeably in the forum.
I wait to be flamed, but isn't Sense just "tarted up" TouchFlo3D with a new snappier name that makes marketing easier? I imagine "Manila" was the original name (an acronym?) for HTC's (at the time) new interface to overlay the WM interface. So, Manila would mean both TF3D and Sense?

There is something to be said about having a general dictionary or list of product names on the forum. There are many names that I don't know and it can take ages to find what they are.

For starters I DID search - plz don't assume something
I do agree that a dictionary of terms would be great.

A breakdown of the convention
TouchFLO: The UI modification designed by HTC.
Manila: Version 2.0 / 2.1 of the TouchFLO UI
Sense: Version 2.5 of the TouchFLO UI
Think of it as codenames, very much like internal build names for the devices.
Touch Diamond 2 = Topaz, for instance, in the same way as TouchFLO 2.1 = Manila and TouchFLO 2.5 = Sense.

Oh dear! I would not want to upset anyone still busily upgrading to the latest start-of-the-art TouchFLO 2.n by having TouchFLO 3.n
This is the standard TouchFLO for T-Mobile written by HTC. Maybe they started new numbering for T-Mobile? Does the build number you quote relate to all TouchFLO versions or just the TouchFLO 2.n versions?

Manila 2.1 is now called HTC Sense in the new 6.5 upgrade ROMs.

Sense is (AFAIK) the "My Location" bit of Manila that allows you to display the weather for my location on the today screen, it's also the code name for the HTC Hero interface that first demostrated weather on the Today screen.
The first Manila 2.1 didn't have sense, but then it was added so it's manila 2.1+Sense, manila 2.5 has always had it.
Dave

Right, I hope everyone's clear on that now
So, extracting from the various posts:
1. TouchFLO was the first HTC interface add-on to WM.
2. Manila was the second HTC interface. It became known popularly as TouchFlo3D or TF3D for short.
3. Sense is an update for Manila which includes "location awareness". It has also replaced TF3D as the popular name for Manila since v2.5
So, Manila is still Manila, but it's known popularly as Sense now rather than TF3D?
PS:
The first Manila 2.1 didn't have sense

Hee Hee, that's nonsense then ...
Sorry, Dave, feel free to ban me for life for that dreadful joke

Manila - Finger Friendly Graphic User Interface - this is platform
Touch Flo - The Interface Plug-in for visualization of Manila platform
Sense - the same as Touch Flo but new release

So this is good, in this single thread I am able to get a better understanding of each of the versions of UI.
there also OS versions and I assume that TF3D, Manila, and Sense are bound to min versions?
Microsoft has released the following over the last 18 months:
WM 6.1 - mostly found on non-touch devices but I understand has Touch support
WM 6.5 (Windows Phone branded lunch) - fully Touch aware albeit mostly still has the small buttons like "OK" or "X" or "CLOSE" these are not fingure friendly although the UI does fully support Touch devices.
WM 6.5.1 - NOT RELEASED. this is the name MS us using for an Interim release (between 6.5 and 7.0) this release will fix many bugs and update the UI to with the "Fat Finger" tabs instead of the little "were is my stylus!" buttons. there are a few ROMs out there that have these features and they dramatically improve the usability (IMHO). I am running build 32502.x1 (Shadowline - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=526618&highlight=23502) and also Optimal Champious (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=573896&highlight=23502). the first has Sense, the second does not (no Manila/Sense).
WM 7.0 - NOT RELEASED. According to my Microsoft contacts will be a complete consumer friendly UI. I suspect this is going to be positioned as the optimal iPhone competitor along with a slew of new devices. My thought is the LEO (albeit big) with WM 7.0 will rock. There is no date but I would bet this come out in late summer/fall of 2010. think about MS cycles for other consumer projects. you need to hit the holiday season or wait till next year.
IF you are still running the stock WM 6.5 that came with your ATT Pure, I recommened (but caution if you are not comfortable and know the risk of 'bricking' your phone is possible) that you check out the new builds. 23502.X or greater like OC, Shadowline builds have been running on my devices for almost a week and they are much improved over the stock.
I only wish there was an iphone like (for fat fingers) keyboard out there.

Just to add, there are lots of great keyboards out there and I have tried a couple of them. I am thinking the screen size on the Topaz is the reason why vs. the iphone.

Manila v2.5 Running on a HTC Touch HD

When the Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 get the Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade later this summer, it looks like they are getting a new version of TouchFLO 3D (Manila v2.5) that stretches the interface a bit deeper and makes it more customizable than seen on the current iteration. If not on the Diamond2 and Touch Pro2, we'll likely see Manila v2.5 on the upcoming Firestone.

For the Home tab, HTC has put forth efforts to bring frequently used tasks to the surface; in this case, the user can place three shortcut buttons that presumably go to a program, contact, or system command. Also, the calendar is still on the Home tab, though we wonder if that section will auto-collapse or simply act as a link.

It seems that HTC Footprints, first launched on the 2009 version of the Touch Cruise, will make its way to all newer versions of TouchFLO 3D. Footprints lets you associate geographical coordinates with a photo.

Settings are going to go much deeper. Currently in TouchFLO 3D, there are only a handful of system settings that are skinned by HTC. Now, it looks like most things, down to Program and Storage, Regional, and even Text Input setting are skinned.

The next build of Manilla, TouchFlo3D 2.5, has been leaked, and this video shows it running on a HTC Touch HD. It continuous the replacement of the normal Windows Mobile UI, and it seems all parts of calendar and settings are now subsumed in the software.
Also new is HTC Footprints as an integral part of TF3D.

Probably won't be that stable for a bit though.
You will need to flash or imageUpdate your phone.

I'm looking at the registry values for the new Footprints function on my HD. Seems Manila 2.5 was written for a device with a 3M pixel cam, opposed to the HD's 5M. I've set the value for a 5M function, but that didn't fix anything. I've alos checked FootCam.exe with Dependancy Walker which tells me alot of files are still missing.
If i find the time, i'll post a list of missing files / dependancies.

So (he said, scratching his head) does this mean that TF3d 2.1.x == Manila 2.1.x == Sense 2.1.x? Or are the versions more subtle than that, such that (for example, not designed to reflect reality) 2.1.189 == TF3D; 2.1.190 == Manila; 2.1.191 == Sense?

Manila, TouchFLO and Sense are all basically the same thing - they all refer to the TouchFLO UI. "Manila" is an internal HTC codename, and you may find a file on your phone somewhere called manila.exe which is the actual executable (launched by the Windows Mobile "Today" screen). TouchFLO was the original marketing name for Manila; it was later renamed "TouchFLO 3D". It's now been renamed again to "Sense UI", and HTC is now marketing "Sense" as a sort of cross-OS platform; so "Sense" (as now used by HTC) can refer not only to the UI on the Touch Pro2, but also to the customised UI on the HTC Hero (which runs Android).
Manila version 2.0 is the one that appears on the original Touch Pro2 ROM (the one that includes Window Mobile 6.1). Manila 2.1 is the version that appears on the WM6.5 version of the standard Touch Pro2 ROM form HTC. Manila 2.5 is the version from the HTC HD2 phone.
ahhh, the light goes on, thank you.

Yes, everyone could glean this info after days/weeks reading ROM Development forums, but thats not the point. When you come in a room in the middle of a complex discussion, it's really nice when someone stops the group and catches you up. By reading and making inferences, I have HTC's code-names mostly straight in my mind, but a post like this, (or one just like it) as part of the 1st page of EVERY HTC DEVICE'S ROM Development Page would help a lot of people. A side effect would be a reduction in the amount of stupid questions.
Yes, HTC likes to try and keep things fresh, by putting a new name, a new spin and a new face on basically the same concepts they have been pedaling since TouchFlo was introduced.
Heck, I work at IBM: Netfinity, eServer, X-Series, System X - whats different? Nothing. Whats in a name? A lot. Its how you make whats old new again!
Even works in reverse. Microsoft said when introducing Windows 95:
No more General Protection Faults (GPFs)! That was true. They just started calling them "Illegal Operations" (remember those?)
i try to search ALOT before asking questions on this forum...if you don't, the super geeks will strike...!!!
most here are friendly and courteous...i just ask all to remember that not everyone on these boards are tech freaks & non-searchers (if that is a word)...
i have used this site for a few years and have yet to flash a device...that may be about to change...
Go for it! Flashing has a LOT to offer

My experience with flashing has been good, if sometimes a bit frustrating. The cooks are very willing to accomodate ideas, fix things and generally give you what you want and need. However, most are always in the hunt for "the next great thing" (which we all are, in way) and that hunt sometimes causes things to get left behind.
Tell you what, I realized just the other day that if I am ever going to get my device to exactly where I want it (which changes for me too, from time to time) I am going to have to start cooking. Yes, I will have to learn a lot more and mistakes are iminent (as long as I don't brick my Touch Pro2 in the process) But my desires are not alltruistic. I just want things the way I want them LOL.
Let me just add my thanks to the finest set of very few words that truly made a difference.
Several people have been very kind about post #9 in this thread. I don't know that it really deserves all this positive attention, but it is appreciated, and you are all welcome.

Manila 2.5

Research for me has turned up somewhat conflicting results, so I ask if the community can shed some light, and in turn enlighten some of us who are in the dark.
Please correct me as I am sure there are some flaws in my knowledge here.
1. Manila / Sense 2.5 has been released officially, but only for the HD2 / Leo? And as such will only be released for this device.
leading to 2. therefore, the TP2 will never have *official* support for Manila 2.5 and it's lovely widget home / full-screen weather home screens
leading to 3. The Leo has no need for landscape support for all it's stuff because it doesn't have a keyboard?
leading to 4. I can discern that Manila 2.5 has added features such as Tiwtter integration and what has really piqued my interest, this "footprint" lark.
leading to 5. I am confused about Manila. It's obviously the program the runs the fancy TF3D interface jibbery-joo, but in some places I get the impression that it's heavily integrated into the windows ROM and so must come already baked in, and in other places It seems like it could almost be a cab file, ready for install?
leading to 6. does anyone know if HTC plans to give us poor TP2 users a widgetized home screen?
leading to 7. In some screen shots I have seen both the widgetised home screen, weather animations and footprint screen in use on what otherwise appears as Manila 2.1, especially the footprints things. Is this a seperate, installable module?
If it is possible to install the components (like footprints) or Manila 2.5 seperately, is there anyone offering them up, can't find them myself?
Many thanks for listening, it's all getting rather confusing.
Landscape support
Go to the aplications side of the thread. Theres apost called "Project Pulse"
Its a mod of 2.5 that supports landscape in all tabs but is still in early form with a few bugs. The developer is working on the bugs and will continue to update it. Its deffinatly worth looking at if you want to see landscape support for 2.5

well friend this doesn't need to be in the rom section but ill see what i can do with your questions.
1. yep it has been made for the htc touch hd 2 but i am guessing it will be made for future devices and touchflo 3d will be gone for good kinda of like what happend between touch flo 2d when 3d came out.
2. it is very doubtful that the touch pro 2 will get an upgrade like 90% chance of no.
3. Yea pretty much why they didn't just make a landscape now is beyond me i know they will eventually maybe if that rumor about the touch hd pro comes out or something.
4 Yea 2.5 has twitter app which really is just alright i would rather use twikini. And footprints has been out for awhile on touch flo 2d.
5.Its kinda of both in a sense there are plenty of cabs for touch flo 3d but it is built in by htc as a more or less skin such as spb mobile shell.
6. Very doubtful htc loves moving forward with things.
7.If you could show us a pic i might be able to answer that but someone would have to port footprints to 2.1 and i really doubt thats gonna happend any time soon.

well friend this doesn't need to be in the rom section but ill see what i can do with your questions.
1. yep it has been made for the htc touch hd 2 but i am guessing it will be made for future devices and touchflo 3d will be gone for good kinda of like what happend between touch flo 2d when 3d came out.

Thanks for your answers man.
You're right it shouldn't be in the ROM section. But I kind of ummed and aarrred about it, and as you said yourself, it's a mixed bag whether manila is cooked in or not. Haha.
But very informative and I appreciate the time your took to reply. Kind of gives a good indication.
I was trying to install sense 2.5 in my TP2 until now ! thanks for posting this

Many thanks for listening, it's all getting rather confusing.

i wanted so much a good rom with 2.5 for my tp2.. what i wanted was a french version of the fusion rom, but as we know, attomang seems to have vanished because of some scamming business he tried...
however here's what i think about the OFFICIAL future of sense 2.5 in landscape : pocket now showed us some leaked pictures of upcoming htc models coming in 2010 (based on some xda informations), and it comes out that there's a tp2-like device coming out.. so if it isn't an android based device, i think we can hope that it will come with 2.5 (and that we can base our future roms on the one that will be provided with it)
---> look at thje third one called "TERA"
http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/hot-three-new-htc-windows-mobile-phones-for-2010
(sorry if me english bad.. me native language french xD)
EDIT / for /7/ "home creen animated...".. it is present in the official 6.5 upgrade (so it's a winmo6.5 with sense 2.1) -- animated weather is on with the default wallpaper (or you can say when no wallpaper is chosen, or set for the homecreen)

I currently have a AT&T Tilt 2...

with the Touchflo 2.1. I hate the calendar (month and day only) and want to know if there is a 2.5 download for the Tilt 2? I have seen others but they are for non-Tilt phones (Leo and Topaz). Also, I have Pocket Informant from a previous Tilt (TyTn II) and would prefer to use that for my calendar and contacts. Can I make these the default or am I stuck with the Touchflo versions?
I contacted HTC this morning...
and 2.5 is not compatible with the Tilt 2. Also they cannot/will not assist on changing the default calendar/contacts to a 3rd party application such as Pocket Informant.
Does anyone here have any advice and another course of action?
Have a look around the Rhodium ROM development forum. You CAN upgrade to Manila 2.5 (though the landscape version is still a bit buggy) and it will invalidate your warranty...
I have looked but not sure
what I'm looking for. I have searched Manilla 2.5 and Touchflo 2.5 but cannot get any hits on these queries.

TouchFlo 2.5
Ok, but this is for the Diamond
Will is work on the Tilt 2? There was another Touchflo 2.5 developed by someone called "udk" but it was designed for the Leo and Topaz stating it will not work on the Tilt 2.
I realize I'm asking a lot of questions but I'm a relative noob and don't want to screw up my phone.
I see all these different versions (blackstone, leo, topaz) and have no idea if they are phones or operating systems, however I DO the difference between a Fuze, Pure Tilt 2 and Touch Pro 2.

this is the main thread for manila 2.5, some people have tried to use it on the tilt 2, and there are a few glitches, but nothing show stopping
Thanks, I'll give it a look
when I get home as I'm on my work pc and cannot sync with it.
just to make sure that it is clear,
Manila 2.5 = touchFlo 2.5 (it is better known as Sense 2.5)
Manila 2.1 = touchFlo 2.1 (it is better known as Sense 2.1)
so if you saw Sense 2.1 know its Manila 2.1 & touchFlo 2.1 .. just different faces for the same coin ...

It will not invalidate your warranty! As long as you flash back and remove hardspl, you will still be able to get the unit fixed under warranty. It is the same with computers with upgrades and OS changes. Bring it back to factory and there will not be any issue.

The info on Blackstone, Leo, Topaz etc. is all here on this very site. Look in the Wiki, or Device database and you will see that the names refer to the different phones. The only ROMs you should be using are for Rhodium (HTC's internal development name), AT&T Tilt2 and Touch Pro2. Also be aware that there are CDMA versions of the Touch Pro2. Flash a non GSM version to your phone and you may brick it. If you have a Telus, Sprint or other CDMA version of the TP2, you can flash a GSM ROM to it, but you have to have a sim card to use it. You cannot flash a GSM phone to a CDMA as there is no built in hardware.

The recent T-Mobile ROM that had been leaked has landscape built in by HTC. The link you gave is no longer needed as most cooks are using the T-Mobile leaked 2.5 sense version.

Some help please in clarifying my themes options

Ok so I know I'll always have unlimited wallpaper options.
But with this whole TouchFlo 3d thing being new to me obviously the world I know of the old home screens have changed a little. (yes I know I can disable touchflo and have the old back...but I like touchflo).
So I am trying to make sense of what my theme options are for my phone
Tmobile Touch Pro 2 with stock tmobile rom (phone purchased 2 weeks ago)
Windows 6.1
Touch Flo 3D version 2.1
plenty of memory
So what I am asking is a pretty newbish question despite me being a windows mobile user for 6 years.
How the hell do I get new themes now. The whole manila utility has me confused its apparant i cant use it but every theme i seem to find is a manila theme, or it is meant for a WVGA phone like the diamond.
So where can I find some that are Touchflo 3d 2.1 friendly and how do I go about installing them now.
Thanks fellas/ladies hope i dont take up too much of your time with this question
A couple of items you should note:
1. The Touch Diamond's resolution is VGA. The Touch Diamond2 and the Touch Pro2's resolutions are WVGA.
2. Manila and TouchFlo3D basically are used interchangeably.
That said, I've given up on manila themes for now. There are too many manila versions. There's 2.0 (without the weather on the home tab), there's 2.1 (with weather on the home tab), there's 2.5 (ported from HD2), and now there's new versions of 2.5 with documents tab...
Anyway, I suppose the advice is that if the theme is packaged into a cab file, give it a try. If it looks funny on your device, then it's not fully compatible with your manila version. Just uninstall it.
Also, it may be worthwhile to have a look at the link in my signature...
I knew I switched WVGA and VGA thanks for that clarification.
And essentially my options without manila are try and find a theme in a cab otherwise I'll struggle.
I read that manila is not compatable with touchflo 3D 2.1 and above. Or am I missing the whole point of how manila works?
For all intents and purposes, "manila" and "TouchFlo3D" are the same.
"TouchFlo3D" was the marketing term used for the HTC custom interface.
"Manila" is HTC's codename for "TouchFlo3D".
"TouchFlo3D" has since been re-branded as "HTC Sense" to be consistent with their custom UI for their Android devices.
In terms of compatibility, as alluded to before, it depends on the version of Manila on your device and the version the theme was made for.
Are there specific release threads somewhere on here for each version from the creator? I keep constantly running into edits and things like that but I cant find the specific release threads. Thanks for your help so far
I also have the same device only difference is I am running windows 6.5. Just yesterday I downloaded a theme from this same forum. The dusk theme. You'll find it just a page or to past this post. Very simple a lot of cab files. The only trouble Im having is installing the windows media and weather program. But take a look pretty cool theme.
Extracting Theme from another ROM
Ok, so I have a different question. Suppose that I like a theme/icons from one ROM, but like the features/performance from another ROM (and assume they are the same version of sense (2.5 with docs tab.)) Is there a way to extract the theme from the ROM and apply that theme to the other ROM that is installed?
Thanks!!
Ok so the dusk theme is pretty independent (looks like it has manila built in) that should be all I need to start off?
