Just wondered if anyone has both and could advise whether it was worth it or not. I'm leaning towards getting a Magic becuase apparently it's thinner (not by much) and lighter and I don't really use the keyboard. I really miss the form factor of the 2G iPhone I had. Rooting and flashing ROMs does sound a little more complicated. Thoughts?
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, it seemed like the most appropriate.

Considering that the only *real* difference is the keyboard, hang onto what you've got -- its better, especially for the odd time when you *do* want to use the keyboard. For me, I would never even consider a phone without a real keyboard.
I had a G1 up to Middle of June When I got my Google Ion. Never looked back. I don't think nOW that rooting is particularly more difficult than it is on G1. I waited til a decent stable Recovery image arrived - I'm using this recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492&highlight=Recovery
Which gives you the opportunity to try it out from Fastboot first, but then wasn't too difficult to flash (Although I did have adb and fastboot on my PC)
Then i installed This Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523971&highlight=Recovery NkO2's Ion Rom just by adding the file to SD and renaming to Update.zip.
There is MUCH more space for apps (295mb compared to around 75mb on G1) and I think its on the whole a much better handset if you don't need the hard keyboard.

Going by this article I'm pretty much sold on the magic. The main reason being the magic is 40 grams lighter, at the cost of a keyboard I never use. Thanks to both of you for your replies

Before you buy an HTC Magic, make sure you get the rogers version which has the 288mb ram.. if not, its not worth getting it...
i had teh g1 from when it came out up until 2 weeks ago and im now using a magic however i will be dicthing the magic to go for an htc hero

Ideally I'd like to trade with someone for a magic (a couple of people did trade earlier, I was too late to the thread >.>) just as long as it's rootable, I'm not fussed.

LOL To say its not worth getting if its not Rogers is B*****ks, mate. As I understand it, the software on the Rogers REQUIRES more RAM, and the versions with 192 RaM are still streets ahead of the G1. The hassles you would have to go through to unlock and debrand a Rogers handset (IF you can get hold of one outside of canada - Big IF) would also be a pain in the caboose.

point of the rogers magic is not the bogged factory rom, its for smooth hero port
Ever since I got the Nexus One, I am unable to pick up much less use MyTouch 3G device. I enjoyed the MT 3G very much rooted with Cyanogen's Mod., but now I have to move on. The Nexus One is light years ahead that the MT 3G. Sadly it is now placed in my gear bag to collect dust with other devices. Anyone else having this experience?
nope, I ebay'd my MT3G for $295
Haha definitely, I have a G1 and mytouch on different lines and everytime I pick them up its just depressing now, gonna go down to 2 lines and give the mytouch to my roommate unless i cant talk her into a nexus one also

It makes my old G1 feel like a gameboy color or something, no joke that phone was such a great device. I'm still getting used to the software keyboard but this thing is hard to put down.

yes, granted it was in mint condition, as most of my stuff is (i did sell it as used though).
I sold my myTouch 3G the Nexus One is so much better. I don't regret spending $529 now :]
sold my g1 for 200 and got the nexus im not sad at alllll lol
dang you guys are lucky I couldnt get more than $195 for my MyTouch
I picked up my G1 a few minutes ago to test something out...... and it felt so awkward and bulky and fat and slow. I doubt I can go back. I may not be 100% used to only using a vk all the time, but the phone just feels so nice compared to the G1. Just the way it felt in my hand was like damn. I love my Nexus One.

Not saying I didn't love my G1, but after using this beast for a few days it just felt so puny in my hands again.
I attempted to try T-Mo in my area to get this phone. No go for me. I can only wish and hope it goes to Sprint, as I wouldn't piss on a Verizon store if it was on fire.
So my dad is a photographer and uses google calendar for all his events. My mom is his assistant. After I got my g1, he loved it so much he got a mytouch 3g. His mytouch is god-awful slow, worse than my g1 when it wasn't rooted. As a result he doesn't use it much. I proposed the idea of rooting it and putting cyanogen on, but he's not so keen on the idea of roms and everything. So what phone should we get with my mom's 2 year upgrade for him? (we would give the mytouch to my mom (after I rooted it of course))
Nexus *cough**cough*
Yell him to wait on line at A&TT and get that IPhone 4GS and pick up a Ipad and a dock for it.
Just joking...The mytouch-Slide might be good since it will have espresso.
I suggest an Acer Liquid
It looks quite nice, its cheaper than all the other SnapDragons
Underclocked yes, but still quite speedy
Its a big improvement over the old G1 I had
thank you all for your help, we'll consider the liquid

Plus the Galaxy 2 will also have the Nexus launcher and UI.

No it doesn't. The G2x only has 512MB of RAM versus the MT4G's 768.
im getting the g2x. ill be in vegas when it comes out. i heard the 15th and than i heard the 20th. ill arrive in vegas on the 16th so hopefully it does launch and i can find the nearest tmobile store. im putting my iphone and mytouch online to trade for one if i go for broke in vegas lol.

Good question. I was surprised to read that myself. 512MB is like going back to early 2010 when the Nexus One came out. I would expect most new high end devices coming out today to have 768MB or 1GB.

Honestly, the myTouch 4G is plenty enough power for me. There is no app alive that can bog this phone down. **** ton of RAM and nice second gen cpu. Dual core is nice but not needed. I'll wait till my contract ends and there's probably gonna be like quad cores out by then lol.

I feel the exact same way. My contract just expired, but there aren't any phones out yet that I'd rather have. The other issue is not knowing what will happen with the network and phone compatibility. I probably won't get a new phone until the TMO/ATT merger is final.
I'll be sitting at Tmobile the second they open getting the G2X. It's too much of a beast not to.

512 mb of ram is large enough, it's just a phone not a real PC. there are no apps available or in development that will require you to have big amounts of ram.
cyanogen just said on his twitter account that this will be his next phone.

so this is a great Plus.

I think I will have to get the G2x. From what everyone is saying, the stock 2.2 sounds like it is so smooth that it will make it easy to wait for Cyan development. I would also imagine that it would be that much easier for LG to release 2.3 OTA. Anybody know what LG's history is on OTA support?

I thought about pre-ordering on the 15th, but it probably won't get to me until the 20th anyway (since the 15th is a friday, sometimes T-Mobile surprises us before the release date), so I might just wait to go to the store in the morning.

The reason T-Mobile took the UI from Optimus 2x off the phone is so it will be easy to update to 2.3, since that's what it was suppose to originally ship with. Google will be the one releasing 2.3 OTA, not LG so don't worry.

Just because no single app uses that much, doesn't mean that a device's performance doesn't increase when more RAM is present. RAM is something you can never have too much of, and in today's world, 512MB for a smartphone is paltry.
I miss the Super amoled screen
Pros:
FFC
HSPA+
LED FLASH
FM RADIO
Physical Buttons + Dedicated Camera Button
Great build quality
Cons:
No Super Amoled Screen
No 16GB Internal Memory
No more Bionix :/
I don't regret it as much but going from a Super Amoled screen to a standard screen really made me realize how great my Sammy Vibe really was! I took it for granted!! You will be missed! (EXCEPT THE GPS ISSUE)
Well i jumped ship.. can't wait for the SGS2 though! Hope to catch up with some of you guys later in the SGS2/HTC SENSATION threads!
Goodbye!
Especially you s15274n. You have been really helpful! Without you knowing. lol
The bionix team and whitehawkxx wish you guys the best.
heading over the the MT4G/Glacier forum now. Peace!
Yeah i feel you man. My wife got a Mytouch 4G and its really nice, i mean really nice, but the Samsung Vibrant has the better screen with the Internal Storage that came way in handy for me. I agree with you, but since i didn't buy a new phone and simply traded i feel that jumping ship wasn't a bad choice. I still plan to upgrade!
Also the MT4G can be resold for a higher price than the Vibrant on craigslist.
BTW... WINNING!
To any CM7 users of vibrant and another phone with CM7(nexus one,MT4g,G2 etc.) are there any other difference in speed? I'm using Cm7 on vibrant but i can't compare it cause it's my only phone.
I picked up a g2 for cheap but still have my vibrant. I don't know what all the fuss was about. This doesn't feel any faster than my kb5 vibrant, and the "build quality" just makes it feel heavy and bulky. Its a decent phone overall, but not any better overall than my vibrant.

Traded the Mytouch 4G for a G2.. G2 is a way better phone than the Mytouch 4G. Some people don't miss keyboards.. but you are crazy not to have a keyboard!! Bought the game gripper and wow.. just wow. The G2 is an overall fun phone and great speed/development/great everything!! Even the hinges on this unit are amazingly stronger than the other g2's i have used.

Not quite sure what about the SGS 4G would renew your interest in comparison to the Vibrant, unless you are in a 4G area and just really CRAVE the extra bandwidth so much that you won't miss the internal 16GB from the Vibrant (4G only has 1GB internal).. And of course, FFC.... which really AFAIC is a "bell and whistle" that 99% of people use once and never use again.

Add the bad/good screens, dust under the screen issues, bad eMMC chips that are said to cause bricking, creaky buttons on a few units, and off centered FFCs on a few. I wanted to trade as well, but a look at the forums steered me right away.
Well, the only phone I'm moving to when I get the chance is the SGSII, no matter what.
I love HTC phones but plenty of those are CDMA only and that doesnt work in my country :[
I bought the mytouch4g back in January and it was so great to have a phone that worked well right out the box and every custom gingerbread rom I've put on it has ran smoothly. However, I find myself constantly going back to my Vibrant. I miss the screen and I feel like the Vibrant has a lot more devs working on roms. I was just about to sell my Vibrant so I could have a few extra bucks when I read about the GPS fix. If I can find the perfect Gingerbread rom I will be keeping my vibrant until Samsung releases a dual-core phone for T-Mobile.
