Just wondered if anyone has both and could advise whether it was worth it or not. I'm leaning towards getting a Magic becuase apparently it's thinner (not by much) and lighter and I don't really use the keyboard. I really miss the form factor of the 2G iPhone I had. Rooting and flashing ROMs does sound a little more complicated. Thoughts?
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, it seemed like the most appropriate.

Considering that the only *real* difference is the keyboard, hang onto what you've got -- its better, especially for the odd time when you *do* want to use the keyboard. For me, I would never even consider a phone without a real keyboard.
I had a G1 up to Middle of June When I got my Google Ion. Never looked back. I don't think nOW that rooting is particularly more difficult than it is on G1. I waited til a decent stable Recovery image arrived - I'm using this recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492&highlight=Recovery
Which gives you the opportunity to try it out from Fastboot first, but then wasn't too difficult to flash (Although I did have adb and fastboot on my PC)
Then i installed This Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523971&highlight=Recovery NkO2's Ion Rom just by adding the file to SD and renaming to Update.zip.
There is MUCH more space for apps (295mb compared to around 75mb on G1) and I think its on the whole a much better handset if you don't need the hard keyboard.

Going by this article I'm pretty much sold on the magic. The main reason being the magic is 40 grams lighter, at the cost of a keyboard I never use. Thanks to both of you for your replies

Before you buy an HTC Magic, make sure you get the rogers version which has the 288mb ram.. if not, its not worth getting it...

Ideally I'd like to trade with someone for a magic (a couple of people did trade earlier, I was too late to the thread >.>) just as long as it's rootable, I'm not fussed.

LOL To say its not worth getting if its not Rogers is B*****ks, mate. As I understand it, the software on the Rogers REQUIRES more RAM, and the versions with 192 RaM are still streets ahead of the G1. The hassles you would have to go through to unlock and debrand a Rogers handset (IF you can get hold of one outside of canada - Big IF) would also be a pain in the caboose.

obviously we live for big pains in our cabooses, we flash hacked roms daily, this is where we get our crack and the devs are our dealers
point of the rogers magic is not the bogged factory rom, its for smooth hero port

Hey all sorry if this is the wrong part of the forum to post this , i have the htc magic unlocked rooted etc but i cant get on with not having a keyboard , so i thought i would ask if anyone wants to swap their dream for my sapphire ? my email is [email protected] uk number is 447533363873 i will need the dream to be unlocked , i have box etc phone is 2 months old mint mint mint condition not 1 scratch anywere . many thanks and sorry again if this is the wrong place to post ,
is it the vodaphone or the htc branded magic
In other words, 256/192 (i.e. identical to dream but no keyboard) or 512/288 (which at least trades the keyboard for more flash/ram).
Hi sorry I should have said its Vodafone HTC
Theres a rather large problem with your plan here..
Your sapphire is locked to vodafone, our dreams are locked to tmobile. Unless you're going to pay to get both unlocked, I doubt you'll find anyone to trade.
I have an android Dev phone. I would consider trading, if for no other reason, because I can sell yours for a bit more.
To be honest though, I probably wouldn't want an even trade. I have 2 skins, a hard cover, and a 2 week old 2600 innocell battery, a bodyguardz screen cover installed (and an extra BG screen cover). I would also want you to get yours unlocked.
I was planning on selling my g1 soon anyway, because to be honest, I am thinking about buying a Toshiba TG01.

I think most of you guys don't use your herald anymore and I've recently started to get tired of mine(due to i fail at flashing through sd card) so I'm in the market for a new phone. Just wondering if you guys can give some feedback on phones you may recently have bought. I'm on the tmobile network so i was thinking of getting the g1 or new mytouch phone. If you guys have any suggestions or feedback on those phones or any other ones i would appreciate it. I love my wing but I think its time to upgrade.

That's the problem, it is an if at this point. The Touch Pro 2 is already confirmed on the big 4 in the US, it's already released on half of them, and releasing on the other half in the next 60 days. It's the "it" phone this year, and probably well into next year as well. It's definitely my next phone.
IMHO "upgrading" to a new Android device is in all reality "downgrading". What makes WinMo great, the customizations...the programs...the hackability, it hardly exists on Android. Yes yes I know before someone comes in here and goes all custom ROM on me, you can do stuff with it. But Android to me is just another pretty dumbphone OS, *cough* iPhone *cough*.
You took the words right out of my mouth dude.
I've had my Wing for more than 2 years and it's done good for me even though, spec wise, it is a crappy phone lol.
The phone I'm getting next is the Touch Pro 2.
I have both the TP2 and the G1, now, in defense of android, it can be a fun system, but I have several issue with it, speed being the main one. Using a custom rom, and actually installing apps slows the phone to a crawl.. the tp2 is awesome.
I cant wait until i get my Tmobile Touch Pro2. At least my wings will go down using the newest Windows Mobile, lol. Even though i plan to keep mine.
TP2 looks amazing, and I might spring for it when it comes out. Right now I use a G1 with a custom ROM and no complaints about the speed
Uhm, you do know that the TP2 is already out right?

Most of our devs are gone. They've run off to the Evo portal and ebayed their Heroes. In turn, people bought their Heroes on Ebay and we will have a flood of noobs coming. We probably won't have a rom update from a major dev ever again, and... it makes me feel empty inside.
Darch is still here, Regaw is still here. Not sure who else is.
Toast and flipz have said hero dev will continue, just slow. I think jschi didn't jump ship either. And he is a genius

Heh. Look at the bright side: now other people can take over the reigns; and trust me, some people here are more than capable at doing so.
Don't feel empty, but I am a little upset with HTC. They've pretty much made us dependent on the developers here. I would be fine with stock roms, but it's pretty clear that HTC is pretty much done supporting the Hero. 2.1 is it and the update comes with its own issues that weren't in 1.5.
I got an Android phone with the assumption that it would be supported with the latest updates at a faster pace and for much longer than what I'm seeing by HTC. It makes it pointless to ever do another contract if I'm going to be stuck with a phone that won't get regular updates from the manufacturer. I'm not sure if I would get another HTC phone. I hope Sprint gets the Nexus One.

^ this and i am thinking that devs from other areas will step into heros now that they can pick them up much cheaper than before the evo was released. look at some of the older phones, they are still going strong in the dev department.
i am not worried even if i end up with 'just' darchdriod as my daily rom for the rest of my contract (another 6 months or so).

The Hero is sort of the unwanted stepchild of XDA now. But, all the first-time Ebay adopters are coming to our "rescue".
I cant do what flipz, damage and darch do. Just naming top 3 roms.
But i can put things together and fix broken things. Ill be stuck with my hero for quite some time. So im always willing to collaborate with others to get something working.
Also im sure we could ask a few questions here and there to the main devs for advice and help. No matter what phone they currently use.
I think we have almost everything we can think of, OC, roms, JIT, themes etc.. I think that covers all the big breakthroughs for are hardware restricted phones. But we can always improve on them, many here are capable. So yeah it sucks these big names left but im honestly not worried about the future of the CDMA hero.
Save up and buy an evo.
This is just how the phone loop rolls, once theres something better , you don't go back.
I will be keeping my hero, but yeah look at it this way , XDA devs are not the only ones dumping the phone , so is sprint.

I don't know why the EVO still does not have full root that can support custom recovery without a computer and since it doesn't have full permissions you can't pull stock apk's and wifi tether does not work. So you can be happy that you have a fully customizable phone for now.

It does have "full root" but the storage has nand locked/protected. It's like that little switch on and SD card or floppy to protect it only its software not hardware theyll break it in a week or two. You can pull apks in recovery... and WiFi tether needs a netfilter kernel so give em a week and it will work.

Well, I think my hd2 days are numbered.

But managed to get back to stock and sent away for repair. Im willing to wait for either the Moto Atrix or LG x2. What you all think, or is there any other phones which are worth holding out for?
Im trying to get a pro/cons for both phones, I heard that the bootloader is locked on the atrix which is causing problems (unless its close to being hacked?) I haved read that the x2 is locked down so thats a bonus. Plus the x2 has the ips panel the iphone uses (lower res than the atrix, which also uses pentile...meant to be not so good upclose but I have never seen one)...however the atrix has the webtop hack over hdmi and some guy has ubuntu kinda working, which could open up a whole amazing portable pc kinda thing.
Thoughts?

I have now Desire Z. This is a good device and there is a forum for Desire Z..
Only that I found that I have to learn more about Android stuffs, such as rooting, unlocking, S-OFF
Although the processor is only 800Mhz, it runs fast than Android in HD2
The price is reasonable HKD4,170 with bonus spare battery. I bought it two weeks ago in Hongkong.

I lost my rooted Aria with Froyo 2.2 and all the good stuff on it. What i got as replacement from insurance already has android 2.2.2 installed. Can u imagine how painful it is? i m keeping an eye on this thread and this webpage.. Well you can follow this link they have found a way to install 3rd party apps on unrooted phones. hope it helps till the s-off comes our way.
When did you get your replacement Aria? I thought AT&T's insurance replacement had been bumped to the Captivate.
If my aria becomes unusable, will the captivate be the replacement?
I just ordered a replacement aria from asurian. should be coming in the mail soon. they told me it would be a refurb aria, but I can hope it will end up being a captivate. doubtful...

Haven't had the chance to get to radio shack. I did call them up and asked them to hold one for me. Even though my new Aria is on 2.2.2 and I am stuck with an un-rooted sense, it's less painful being able to use the trick to allow installing apps from unknown sources, so I still have some decisions to make---be cheap and go for the amazing deal of the $29 Inspire--or future-proof myself and wait for the SGS II.

That thing blows the iphone 4 away as far as specs go. Its screen is an inch bigger than the ip4, twice as much ram, and a dual core faster processor. And a much better camera. Sounds more like this phone is going to be direct competition to the sgs2 and iphone5.

This happened to me too I'm so sad. The microphone on my old aria decided to crap out and now I'm stuck with a refurb 2.2.2 aria. I hope someone can figure this out soon...
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones as far as warranty goes. After having WM phones for a few years I got my Aria in Feb. Actually wanted a 4" phone but decided to get this (happy now that I did) and wait to see what comes out. Almost 30 days to the day I noticed that the antenna on the back cover was coming loose on one of the corners. This is after I was already rooted and flashed a couple different roms! So, I'm thinking the chances of getting a replacement back cover are slim to none and I'm going to end up with a phone that can't be rooted or have to live with possible antenna issues. I call AT&T, they have someone call me. After a couple phone conversations and an email update I get a new back cover in the mail a week later. Amazing!!! Maybe the fact that I've been with AT&T about 12 years helped!
