This is from june or july but its the first ive read of flash ONLY coming with the hero. Seems to indicate ONLY the hero, i was under the impression flash was coming to "android" in october...anyone have any good news about this that might allude to the mytouch eventually having adobe flash 10 compatibility? Im already disappointed with the MyTouch's lack of ram improvement over the g1, flash was the saving grace otherwise im dropping tmobile like a bad habit...thanks for any info

I wouldn't get too excited about it. The Hero roms that "should" support flash 10 dont. You will barely be able to find any flash content that it will work with. It's a big joke.

When i had a g1 i tried all of the hero/sense builds and they only had flash 9. I hope thats what youre referring to, that it only comes with flash 9 compatibility...because if the actual adobe flash update slated to be available october, the one adobe and android have been touting is as bad as youve described i will have hit the end of my patience with android...
I agree. 500 bucks and it feels like I have half of a web browser. I have the greatest of hopes for Android but I am starting to look back a Windows mobile with a twinkle in my eye.

Yeah the hero roms only have flash 9. Flash 10 is due next month. Which will fix most websites that use flash. Have faith in Android.. for it is good.

Just a quick discussion point here but does anyone think the reason why 2.0 hasn't been released to phones running Barebone Google Android (EG Dream, Magic, Samsing i7500 etc) is because they are only going to get 2.1?
2.0 doesn't seem as "major" as what 2.1 is to the average customer.
It's mostly because these early android devices won't run as smoothly with those updates. The reason why it runs so well when we custom boot it is because we added Apps2sd and linux-swap to the game.
well at least for the dream, they don't think it can handle what 2.0 is capable of

"they"? Did someone at HTC or Google tell you this or are you just repeating the random FUD floating around xda?
Can you explain what you mean about 2.0 not being as major as 2.1?

Probably FUD lol, but I don't know how fast 2.0 would run without a fast sdcard and linux-swap on a G1. And the fact that a lot of these roms increase the mhz limit
but i think these updates are all up to the carriers
They are entirely up to the carriers.
No reason why 2.0 (or 2.1) wouldn't fly on DREAM if properly optimized. No need for swap. MHz irrelevant. Lots of space.
Its mainly a wait and see thing going on. They probably trying to fry a few people's brains for the xmas season (buy upgrade since people frustrated with not getting the update). Sometime in jan the update should come along for dream/magic/etc.
The G1 and Mytouch's are getting 2.5 in January and it has flash player with it.

it would be interesting to see when we get the flash module for the nexus one!!!! what other enhancements would that also come with?
It really exists

Yes, we would need someone to leak it to us, which hasn't happened and doesn't look very likely since people tend to value their job. Have patience, though, Adobe said Android will be the first to get it, and it will be released in the first half of this year... so June at the latest. I would assume sooner, though, since they have it running and are demoing it on a N1 and Droid at MWC, and from the sounds of it is damn near complete.
This will be the nail in the iphone coffin.
The sooner we can get this on our N1's the better.
I was at Flashcamp yesterday at Adobe. Here's what I learned:
Flash Player will run on any handset with FroYo. Both should be available in May. FP is hardware-optimized when possible, hence the dependancy on FroYo.
Bowler Hat's GridShock was being demoed on a Droid as a native APK (just like the iPhone Packager). I forgot to check the Android version, but it felt slightly laggy.
I think I heard AIR (the Android Packager) should ship around September.
Awesome Android devices will ship this year, including tablets.
What version number will FroYo get? Are you serious, May? I seriously doubt that FroYo will be released in May...
I heard Fro-Yo is Android 2.3. They publicly stated that Flash Player 10.1 will run on any phone with Fro-Yo, and that there will be a public build available in May. They did give the caveat concerning the availability of Fro-Yo on devices, so I don't know what the Android timetable is.
I'm mainly posting this info here so the ROM chefs can start thinking about an AOSP build of Fro-Yo, so we'll be able to run Flash content on a mobile device in May.

i can't remember when AOSP 2.1 was released but its at least 6 months now. i also doubt it will be May, but would be pleasantly surprised if it was.

As I wrote somewhere, there are already some simple checks for Froyo in Google Maps This doesn't mean we will have it soon, but we can at least hope for that

I wanted to run a 2nd poll following the news that the Hero firmware patch for 2.x had been pushed back yet again....
Do we have an opinion? Do we care much because we have a cool bunch of cooks anyway?
Let's see....
I think it's pointless jumping ship now, after waiting for so long.
It will be more interesting to see if Fro-yo will help to ease this situation with future updates.
there are a serveral options that arent in the poll
no - Ill buy another android device no HTC for me anymore
no - Ill flash a custom rom
for me well i just flashed senseHero 2.1 and im happy with it xD
and next time i guess i will buy a nexus 2 or nex 3 becouse then you will get the newest software i hope

also i would vote for "no i will get a non-htc device before", i think that is an option that should be listed. at least to make people think about that there are ways to show your dis-appreciation (just made that word up) for htc. show them that they suck, buy competitors phones.
edit: now i read the posts between the first and the last, guess i am not the only one thinking this way
Kudos to kyods there
I will wait, not that im waiting for the update i just dont have the "time" to buy a new device every 6/12 months.
But i am a little dissapointed with Android,i thought that beeing open-source would make it easier to keep it updated...i know the main problem is kernell,in other words HTC,but same thing happends with other brands.
All i hope is the few true developers for our Hero stay aboard...
My contract isn't up till next feb so I will hang on for the next gen of devices (4"+ screens, 1.5GHz 2nd Gen processors, Better touch sensors, more RAM e.t.c) and stick with loading custom ROMs on my hero until then
Why would anyone need an "official" GSM rom?
Take the fresh Sprint leak, use the GSM leaked kernels and voila.
It'd be the exact same thing.

The GSM leaked kernels are crap, the are test kernels that suck the life out of the battery.
We need an official kernel to improve the ROM's any more
i'll just use cooked roms, they are often better than the official ones anyway.

+1, no need to wait, aHero is fine for me and I prefer Vanilla Android than SenseUI.
Maybe this update, if it comes one day, will bring new/better/improved drivers, kernel patches or whatever, so I'll wait but ... it's HTC: they'll invest more time in new device than supporting "older" ones
VillianROM
Who needs an official build when we have Nathan, VillianROM is all I need in my life. I only want cooked Roms
All we need from the official HTC update is the kernel.
Ontopic: I will stick with my Hero, since it's a very good phone.
All this screwing around on HTC's part has learnt me one thing. I'm never buying a HTC android device again. They could've release an update months ago. All they want is for us to get tired of waiting and buy a Desire or Legend. Not me.
I'll wait for the upgrade. Buy a new android device in fall. And it will be a Samsung or Motorola.
its annoying, but sensehero 2.1 makes it bearable.
As I am in a contract with my hero, I will wait, but once my contract is up I probably wont be getting another HTC phone. I don't like waiting for updates when they are available, its really annoying, and to be honest, does not make me feel very valued as a customer.
If I am not valued by HTC, then I will not be giving them any more of my money.
simples.
So I've been messing around trying to see what I can get going on the froyo front and I'm running into some problems....
first off, froyo isn't a huge fan of the galaxy s hardware...in AVD, when I create the profile in terms of the captivate hardware and it is buggy even in emulation...this doesn't bode well for actual hardware use. Maybe I'm just really bad at development but I dunno...
So secondly, on the phone itself I thought i'd try to just send over the image to see if the phone would even accept it. While the bootloader seems to be fine and not too worried about accepting an image (the touchwiz 2.1) it doesn't want to accept the buggy froyo.
So i've given it some shots, but its gonna take someone or a group of people who're smarter than me to see why the bootloader isn't really unlocked and why the avd doesn't like the galaxy s hardware specifications
I brought up the possibility of not being able to run Froyo without it being officially released by Samsung first on the Phandroid forums and repeatedly was assured that it'd only be a matter of time until Froyo was released on it.
This is disappointing

well it should work without it being specifically released (see aria, and every old HTC) but for some reason it's not. I'm probably just doing something wrong... i was a WM dev then an iPhone dev, I'm just learning the whole android development stuff
Read up on behold 2 development on androidforums.com and Eugene_ 373's forum on androidspin.com its very similar in structure to the galaxy s brand of phones. You can't expect Samsung phones and HTC phones to be in anyway simular. They use different file systems and partitions. So it is not a cut and paste job you need to do some heavy hacking.

I and pretty much everyone that has followed the behold 2 debacle on androidforums.com have major doubts but I still believe there is potential. That's as much as I can say because some people on here don't like the fact that I don't have the same blind optimism as they do.

Also I still might get a captivate if some good dev work is done. I don't need froyo before Samsung releases it and most of the added function provided by hacked and rooted roms can be added on to samsung roms. I am not getting a new phone for another month so if it looks like there is a lot of dev work done to this phone by then I will stay Samsung even though it might not get gingerbread.

Just doing a quick Twitter search for "iphone captivate" yields 80% of the peope tweeting something along the lines of leaving their iPhone 4 for a captivate. Lets hope the Dev's share the same thoughts.
Hey I would just like to know if the Galaxy S has something. Can you go into Apps managment and look for an app called "device managment"? If it's there and at 40+ mb's then that is a recovery rom. It is a duplicate of your starting rom. You can clear it most likely to regain space but after a reboot it will come back. There is another partition on the phone that stores the rom and the phone will run a check on boot up to make sure it's there. If not then it replaces it. It can be hacked out permanently but I know the Galaxy S doesn't really have any issues about storage space.

Very much apperciated, and the links were helpful on how this all will go down. This greatly changes on if I'll keep my Captivate. I know you should be happy with the phone you have, not the one you'll get, but I don't think I can stomach having a phone that won't be supported come Q4.
If the galaxy phones sell well it will be supported. They do have some phones that have gone from 1.5 to 2.1. Just don't expect any haste out of there crew
The fact that there will be an official release of 2.2 is whats keeping most devs from putting time into it. I know I wouldn't want to put a lot of effort into something just to have an official release come out before development is done.

Tell that to Cyanogen and Avalaunchmods and Herver who are all making FroYo ROMs for the Evo.

wrong.
See above post and also thing about the nexus one. 2.2 was released via cyanogen before it was officially released to the public.
And why would you want the official release from Samsung, which would still have the ATT junk and TW3.0, I want STOCK.

Yeah being able to remove the bloatware and using launcher pro and some of the stock Android apps like music is nice but still having to leave any TouchWiz stuff there is annoying. It will be the same on the official release just with 2.2 so I don't see why there wouldn't already be development for a custom ROM for captivate based off the stock Froyo 2.2 straight from Google. In fact this reminds me that I need to keep reading up and playing around so I might be able to do something even though it would only be for future development.
I'm not as concerned about 2.2 as 3.0...
If someone can get 2.2 running on this, then it bodes well for getting 3.0 running on this as well.
