A friend of mine just gave me his old HTC WizA200. When I got it, the battery was dead (found that out after I tore the back off it and managed to get my still camera's battery to power it, although that made it very difficult to do anything on it with), so now that I got a new battery off eBay, it powers on.
Now, the problem(s) is/are this/these:
1) Wifi works fine, can't tell for sure is Bluetooth works 'cause I don't have anything Bluetooth, so I can't test that, ActiveSync works, can't determine if IR/Beam works (nothing to test it with). The phone icon in connection manager seems to turn the phone radio system on, but it just searches endlessly for a network although there are numerous networks around the area (there's a tower behind Sam's Club about 7 blocks away). I know for a fact that T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, and TracFone have good strong signals right here in my apartment, so I can't seem to figure this problem out. Any help would be appreciated and if I can figure out how, I'll try my best to give you any more information that might help straighten this out.
2) I'm not sure if this is standard behavior or what, but it can be annoying sometimes. When I do a full power off or a soft or hard reset, when the phone comes back on, it will always shut Wifi off and turn Phone on in connection manager regardless of what was turned on and off when I reset it or power it off. Is there a way to make it remember what was turned on and off? And, what does the Wifi operate in by default... 802.11b or g and how would I change it to the faster of the two (802.11G)?

ive been runnin black majik for a while with no problems
until tonight, i wasnt doing anything an i noticed i had no service.
put my sim in an old phone and it worked
put a working sim in my phone and no service.
now i cannont connect to active sync, the light lights up orange for a second and the battery doesnt seem to charge.
altho it was working yesterday fine.
wtf happened?
Welcome to XDA developers on your first post - hopefully someone here can help.
The basic radio (phone) capabilities are determined by a combination of the OS ROM (Black MAJIK in your case) and (mainly) the radio version. Have you upgraded the radio? I have Black MAJIK and have no issues with the radio version 1.43. It sounds like you have 2 problems - the radio and then the USB activesync connectivity.
My obvious inclination would be to reset the device (hard-reset) but did you upgrade the radio and did the phone work straight after that upgrade process? Were there any warnings if you did upgrade the radio?
I normally have no problems at all with activesync but have occasionally seen the same fault as you (orange charge light with no activesync connection established - and sometimes a missing orange light even though the device has not been moved and is clearly connected).
I'd hesitate to offer any other advice just yet - let's see what your answers are and I am sure that others may step in to help. You might like to provide a few more details in your XDA dev profile and others will see where you are, what provider you are with and which model of Hermes you have.

i have the cingular 8525
and i have radio 1.40.30 i beleive thats what it said
and no this did not happpen when i was upgrading the radio...
it pretty much just crapped out
ok well i flashed the 1.47 radio on there and i got service yet its horrible with att
i barely can make calls even with full service.
im going to try an older one i suppose.
ok well i installed the stop wm5 att rom with radio version 1.34 and i dont get service. any idears?
ok well 1.40 doesnt work.
only one i seem to get barely to work is 1.47
why the heck is this, i been searching like crazy
1.46 isnt working either.
all these roms just keep searching for a network and do not connect.
ive tried soft and hard resetting many times with no prevail.
to fix the active sync issue i unintalled .net framework, then uninstalled atcive sync then reinstalled both, now onto this radio issue.
to be honest i thnk this started happening after i poked the light sensor on the keyboard with the stylus, but i doubt that would happen to have anything to do with it.
just so u all know i have tried numerous roms/radio combos, also tried the stock att cingular roms.
nothing seems to find service.
ipl 1.01
spl-2.10.olipro
ok i pretty much figure this is a hardware issue.
what should i do so when i send it back to ATT they wont know i messed with the OS.
obv the stock WM5 cingular os
the radio version it came with
and the spl it came with?
anything im missing?
oh it also doesnt say NO GSM when i boot, it shows the radio version
just an update im sure seeing this topic on top all the time got annoying.
well after no prevail last night with the whole no service thing i wake up this morning put my sim back in, and what ya know i have full service.
althought i still returned it and got a new one because i got that 8525 not more than 30 days ago.
att was very quick to replace it considering its my second one in a month.
ive tryed the black roms, schaps stuff, currently on the offical htc rom
3.54.255.3
with radio 1.48
this is completey clean from any additional software, apps, apart from a t-mobile custom cab, for the web settings
ive tried radios 1.38, 1.43, 1.47 and 1.50 that i can remember
and still i can phone my phone and it goes to voicemail, or turn off voicemail, and it goes currently unavailable!
even with the phone on, looking at it with signal, it still says unavailable now and then.
its fast becoming a useless brick!!
any tips, advice? programs?
I had the same problem over here. It's because of the Ericsson infrastructure of KPN here. When I have a data connection my phone comes unreachable.
My working solution is that I turn of 3G. Now I'm on normal GSM mode.
And believe it or not -> This works. Even my battery life is now over 50 hours with one charge. I'm currently trying to manually activesync. This should also perform better with a one charge!
Greetings and succes!
If you browse in this forum you'll probably find more answers to this question!

ive read that elsewhere, how do you turn the 3g off?
ive just flashed black satin on it,
im looking at the lump of plastic, switched on 2 bars of signal, call the dam thing from my other phone and F all!!!1
"go's off to bang head or phone against the wall!"
right schaps 3.57a
and radio 1.38.00.01 which worked ok for me a few months ago
protocol version 32.71.7020.12H
Im at the point now where the phone wont wake up for a call at all!
and if the phone is on with signal, still wont show a call, just get on the phone unavailable.
and its a 50/50 chance if i can make a call from the hermes.
have i screwed up something in all this rom / radio upgrading?
as you can see from the above my hermes is good for.... being an mp3 player!
Hi guys, I'm hoping one of you knowledgeable people might be able to help please, I've done a bit of seraching/googling but not really got anywhere...
I've noticed over the last few days that my TD2 keeps losing reception in places where I normally have a very good signal - e.g. the handset will be sat on my desk at work for a while, and when I pick it up to use it to make a call, send a text etc I notice that the network icon on the taskbar at the top is showing an exclamation mark to indicate there is no signal. I have to power off the handset and turn it back on to clear this problem (I've tried going to the comm manager and disabling/enabling 'phone' but when I disable it I cannot re-enable it afterwards).
I was wondering if this is a problem with my handset or the network (T-Mobile UK)?
Anyone got any ideas please?
Device information in case it's needed:
ROM Version: 1.39.405.2 (47382) WWE
ROM Date: 04/07/09
Radio Version: 3.43.25.19
Protocol Version: 61.20t.25.10U
I had the same problem in areas where the 3G signal is weak. I disabled 3G and everything is OK. I also noticed a dramatic increase in battery life.

I get this every 2-3 weeks (known strong signal area, no reception at all indicated), it could a bug in the Radio ROM, perhaps? Updating the Radio ROM might help. But this...

..doesn't sound right. I do this and it clears the problem without restarting the phone.
@ kskar - Sometimes I'm in a good 3G area when this happens (Manchester city centre, UK) and sometimes I'm not (at home), so I don't think this would be causing it.
@ Pete_S - I was wondering if it could be anything to do with the Radio ROM... I also tried turning airplane mode on/off in comm manager, but it usually won't come out of airplane mode either without powering off & back on.
You could also try constraining the phone to operate only in the UK bands (phone settings - Band - GSM(900+1800) + UMTS(900+2100)) and, if you only use 3G, set network type to "WCDMA".
My wife's Elf keeps losing the phone network connection, each time she was in an area without reception, like elevators etc. and than refuses to register back to the network. Only way to get it to register again is to do a soft reset. (turning off and on the phone radio sometimes works, automatic and manual network selection don't). Tried another SIM card, same thing happened. The problem developed when she started to use GPRS/EDGE (previosly used her phone for calls and SMS).
Any ideas?
Have you tried flashing to a new radio in the elf upgrading forums?
Cheers
Changed radio still no go. Interesting enough it works when she doesn't use GPRS. I changed the RIL registry settings, and will be testing it next few days.
Oh, check it out and see how it goes.
Radio is usually affecting the issue.
You can hard reset, if it doesnt work!
Do backup!!
Seems like I tried everything possible and still nothing, it is probably hardware failure. My wife is going nokia after this, she said no more winmo.
Hi everyone, my HD2 just stopped working with no signal at all.and shows a exclamation all the time, sim cards are no problem. i've updated the phone with official sw, still have this problem at the beginning.
has the phone been blacklisted?
is the phone turned on in wireless mode in settings? ( ya never no)
is it still under warranty?
My HD2 has done the exact same thing, just shows an !
it doesnt even try to find a signal.
phone was a tmobile UK version, which was unlocked to use any network.
the problem has literly just happened today.
have tried different offical roms, and different sim cards.

Just phoned my provider in regards to my phone, quoted the emei and have been told the phone is blacklisted.
they are sending a request to have it unbarred. will post the outcome.
I have had this happen alot with Vodaphone UK. This is a brand new number so doubt it has been black listed.
I can get this working my turning the phone to airplane mode then back to phone mode, this most of the time makes the phone look for a signal.
Usually happens to me when there is no signal like in a tunnel, the phone does not seem to try looking for the network until you force it to.
This is possibly a fault with the timeout of the HTC HD2. Could be once it tries to connect when out of signal the device gives up after a number of attemtps.
Does anyone know?t

I was searching before posting for just this problem.
It is really irritating me. The phone can jump from deciding there is no signal to sometimes even going to full-bar "H"!
I hav currently resorted to turning off 3G as at least that way I am eliminating the idiocy of it prefering 0/1 bar of "H" vs near full non-3G reception for calls.
Even so at times it will just sit there for ages having dropped a signal with the exclamation showing and then jump back to life [in the same place] with good reception.
I am also on Voda UK
Mine has done that twice, in 4 months. 1 time phone was turned off inside connections, no idea how? 2nd time I just shut off, & back on, signal was back, hasn't happened in months now?
so does anyone have a solution to this problem?
I've checked with my service provider and my phone is not blacklisted...
My SIM card seems fine and everything else seems fine, except it keeps giving me the exclamation mark.. most of the time i notice it's when i get out of the lift (but that could be because that's when i usually check my phone before I put it on my desk).
There are many occasions (probably 5+ times/day) where I turn my phone on (ie, off standby) after it's been sitting on my desk for an hour or so to check calls, etc and there is that dreaded exclamation mark.
I know the area around my desk does have a signal because the guy next to me on the same network has a strong 3G and 2G signal.
Sometimes going to Comms to turn airplane mode on and off to force it to look for a signal works, but sometimes it doesnt.
I've tried soft-resetting, hard-resetting, using different radios, different ROMs, etc and still no good.
Funny thing is, it's only been happening over the past 2-3 weeks.. and I'm not sure what triggered it.
It's really starting to frustrate the crap outta me and friends have been asking why they can't get through...
Any help would be appreciated.. . I'm trying to avoid sending it to the HTC service centre if I can because they're slooooow and the stories I've read about my local centre are pretty bad (when I had my HTC diamond).
Solved:upgrade your rom everything gonna b in place
Upgrade to what?
I am having the same problem, for a hile now. Been fiddling with phone settings parameters, trying to see the effect. One particular combination so far seems to work. Try this: Comm manager --> Phone --> Tap Change Phone settings --> Menu --> Advanced network --> GPRS --> select CHAP authentication --> then CSD Line Type --> select Data rate 9600(v.110). Then OK, Back, and Done with the Comm manager. Observe if the network pickup performance (switching from non-existent H or 3G to E or G) works better for you after that. It does better for me, so far.
I'm having the same problem - NO SIGNAL
Any solution?
i recently discovered that for my problem, it was to do with the earphones. Not sure why, but it only seems to happen to me not long after i plug or unplug the earphones.
I usually have my HD2 on my desk with the music going while I work, but every hour or so, I unplug the earphones and take my phone by itself out with me for a cigarette.. then I come back and plug the earphones back in.
Often when I'm about to head downstairs, I turn on the screen while the music is still going and i see the "!"... as soon as I unplug the earphones, the bars indicating reception comes back straightaway!
Not sure if it's a coincidence or whether it really does have something to do with the earphone/earphone jack.
Since I upgraded to the Vodafone rom on the htc website I have not had this problem

I have just bitten the bullet and accepted the phone is crap at swithing between 2G and 3G signal so turn off 3G in a couple of locations when I know I get this problem [home - I can use WIFI] and my office.
HTC would not be drawn at all on un updated Radio and this problem being "fixed" in USA ROMs
Fixed
the very easy fix is to do this :
settings _ personal _ phone _ network then make network selection to manual ,, then choose ur provider,,, then u will have signal,, after that u can turn it back to automatic
100% working
Thanks a "fix" not a solution.
Rather silly to have to jump through hoops to make a mobile phone recognise available reception
Have the same problem
I have the same problem now, any solution for that?
