I am wondering where I could buy a hero unlocked. I am on att and it would be great if it had the proper 3g frequencies. Thank You
you need to read the other threads that are already asking about whether it works in the US and where to buy it rather than start yet another thread....
as already stated in all of them, the European hero will not work on 3G anywhere in the states. you will have to wait until the US version is released later in the year.

I'm very curious to know if I am going to have any problems rooting my phone when I get it and using it on the rogers network here in Halifax, Canada. I don't know if I need to unlock it after getting the new software on it since the software out there expects a US network. I really want this phone badly but I really only want it for the newer features rooting provides. Does anyone know if I should expect any problems even though it the same phone? I wouldn't expect that because it is a different network that I would have problems.
Since it's not officially released yet, rogers will not quote me a price but I can't see it being more than a damn iphone and T-Mobile released it as $179 with contract and still remains the same so besides a difference in Canadian funds plus tax it should not differ that much.
So can anyone shed some light as to whether the firmware will be able to be loaded on the "Canadian Version"?
As far as I can tell all that is new is this....
"On June 2nd, 2009 it will be released through Rogers Communications in Canada as the HTC Dream. This edition of the HTC Dream includes the UMTS 850 / 1900 bands for use on Rogers' 3G network."
I am unsure if this is new hardware or not and I dunno if it will affect the install of the ROM or not. Please help me out! Thanx!
how can we help u since we don't have either the hardware or the firmware yet. It's only ONE day left so calm down
no damnit...too excited!!! lol

djunio over at Android Community forums posted this today - might help

hey vonne thats cool but i never heard of them are they a wireless company? i much rather buy an unlock or do some of the things i said in the original message
you can buy unlocked phones off ebay. i sell some there. if you buy the Sprint I don't think it will work on Tmobile even if you unlock it because Sprint uses CDMA and Tmobile is GSM. If you buy an unlocked GSM phone it should work on Tmobile. I had a different unlocked GSM phone while i was in the US this summer and it worked fine.
ok csasek but im talking bout the hero/ G2 touch not any other phone i jus want that one there so many smart people that hav info on this phone an none can help me?
the only place you can get it unlocked is on ebay for about $550, and yes it will work in the US...any other specific questions
You are aware that the G2 Touch will not work with 3G in the US? If you buy one, you will be restricted to EDGE at best. As has been already stated, the Sprint Hero can never work with T-Mobile US at all.

Dave

why doesn't the Hero work with US 3G? what frequencies/technology do ATT & Tmobile us for 3G? I thought that Tmobile was using WCDMA/ HSDPA which should be compatible and that ATT uses HSDPA too.
I honestly don't know what all these things mean so if you could provide some insight I would really appreciate it. Since I sell these on ebay I like to be able to answer these types of questions.

Yes they do, but the important thing here is that these services can be offered over several different frequencies.
The "worldwide" Hero (as opposed to the Sprint one) only supports 3G (HSPA/WCDMA) at 900Mhz and 2100Mhz.
http://www.htc.com/www/product/hero/specification.html
T-Mobile US's 3G network runs at 1700MHz, and ATT's 3G at 1900MHz. Neither of these 3G bands are supported by the radio in the GSM Hero, so you are stuck with 2G/EDGE speeds.
Regards,
Dave
Thank you very much for the explanation
im sure there is a radio update in the development section somewhere???
this would alow US users to have 3G but they would require root in order to flash the new radio
There is no radio ROM update at present which will make US 3G bands available, and there is no evidence as yet that this is a ROM and not a hardware restriction.
If I were interested in pursuing this further, I'd probably enquire in the Magic forums if it possible to flash a MyTouch 3G radio onto a European Magic to get 3G working with T-Mobile US.
Regards,
Dave

no, T-Mo's version won't pick up 3G on AT&T's network. they use different 3G bands. AT&T - 850/1900; T-Mo - 700/2100
Look at post#26 in this thread. Maybe there is some hope that T-mo's version will work on AT&T, but I wouldn't be too optimistic. I certainly wouldn't purchase it based on this information. There's a good chance you won't get a definite answer until the phone is released and someone can post here on this forum if it works with AT&T or not. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if HTC has an agreement with AT&T to disable the radios for AT&T 3G so that folks are forced to buy the AT&T version if they want 3G. I think that is why the latest phone releases in Europe don't support American 3G bands. Earlier phones such as the Kaiser and Hermes models had quad band HSPA that would access 3G in Europe and on AT&T. But, do we know for sure at this point that AT&T is not going to carry this phone? I hear it has been announced on Telstra in Australia which uses the 850 MHz band for 3G. This will work in most areas that support 3G in AT&T's network which is 850/1900. That may be a better option for you than T-mobile's version.

Can you tell me where you read this? I've been keeping tabs on Australian blogs and forums and I have yet to have seen a blip on the radar that this has been announced. An Australian blog has even gone as far to say that Telstra has so far refused to comment on whether they have plans to release the HD2.

we'll just have to wait for some concrete evidence of this. I've heard this too, but it was nothing more than a rumor. and if I remember correctly, Telstra didn't release their version of the original Touch HD until 3 months after it was released in Europe. so we'll just have to wait
All I want to ask is why create another thread with exactly the same topic again?
Maybe mod should close this thread.
You can buy an HD2 from T-Mobile for $450, or you can buy a European version (I assume quad band) from Amazon for $700. My question is - what bands are supported on the T-Mobile version? Will that GSM band(s?) work on AT&T? Other than working in Europe, any other advantage in going with the $700 version?
Ideally I'd wait for an EVO 4G, but my current phone is coughing up blood, and don't know if it will make it to the summer...

all HD2 are quadband GSM, so it will work on any GSM EDGE network
euro HD2 has 900/2100MHz 3G band
telsla HD2 has 850/2100MHz 3G band (ATT)
Tmo USA HD2 has 1700/2100MHz 3G band
EVO 4G is CDMA, only works on Verizon
The Telstra version he mentions is about $780-800USD, just fyi.
Mind you that you have been able to buy T-mobile HD2's in europe and elsewhere for quite some time. It's confusing for the owners of said version when threads get labelled like this. Specify T-mobile US in thread titles.

Hey! You mean that there are other parts of the world where they have had the HD2 for some time and that the US its actually playing catch up?
Yes, but the US candidate is quite a sprinter; with more ROM and double the Flash memory, the EU version is left in a sore 2nd place even after the late start

actually...double the ROM and exactly the same RAM
Just started looking around to buy an X10. Can't seem to find one that supports ATT's 850/1900 frequency. Do they even sell an X10 that supports that yet ?
Not at the moment. Probably soon. Rogers (Canadian carrier) will be selling its LOCKED x10a so if you want to get it, you'll need to get it unlocked. But it does have the correct frequency for AT&T.
Its coming, rumor has it possible as soon as the Rogers release mid month. Try this link for a little unlocked 850/1900 love ---> http://www.expansys-usa.com/d.aspx?i=190979
Ah ok, thanks guys.
Ya, the X10 will be available through Rogers directly (as well as through Canadian Best Buy stores) on April 15th. Should be $549.99 CDN. It should work on AT&T once unlocked.
There's a thread over on HoFo where U.S. customers are requesting X10's from Canadians:
Anyone In Canada could buy a x10 for me ?
We cant just wander over the border and pick one up?

Of course you can. Not convenient for many is all.
In theory the Canadian BB unlocked phone should be the same thing as the American version, be curious to see where it gets priced. Wondering if we will get it in BBs south of the border as I type this.... I would love to put my grubs on this before making a decision.
