Opinion: cyanogenmod or jacheroski? - G1 General

I am trying to figure out what I would like to do.
I would love to go with hero, but I hear that bluetooth doesnt work yet and that its slower than the android1.5 roms... any opinions?
thanks!

This is really for you to decide. JacHero can be fairly fast and it can be abysmally slow, just depends on your settings. If you have a large class 6 memory card partitioned with ext and a linux-swap partition it will dramatically improve performance. Don't expect it to run like a real Hero, it will be really slow if you have more than a few widgets. Also expect to see touchflo take a few seconds to load after exiting apps. If I was you I'd try it out, and if you don't like it flash to Cyan's.

CM roms are always good. smooth and speedy. hero roms are hit and miss. miss for the most part. with compache and swapiness settings you can get it run ok at best. ive gotten it to run some what smooth in certain areas and i usually see lag when entering an app then finally hitting home and itll just sit for a second. to some its operational but your best bet is CM at this point because you have a completely working phone. flash both and see how you like them. or try the jacski rom.

hows jacmytouch speed wise?

The ONLY good advice anyone can give you is try them all. It's all preference. I like fat chicks, you might not, so who am I to tell you fat chicks are better?.....

the jacmytouchski2.0 rom is fast and stable! no need for 3 partitions just 2. its about the most complete rom that i have seen. im sure you will like it. imo, hero just has the sexier home screen widgets blah blah blah. if you were able to implement those in the jacski rom (cant btw). it would be a wrap!

hmm....interesting question....at this point i would say both are on the same playing field. in some parts one is faster then the other. either will be up to par on speed. open two windows with the OP of each rom. compare the features and see which one suits ur usage. if its still a toss up, one tipping factor could be the theme. CM is cupcake and looks as so. jacski has a very nice theme already implemented. yes you could flash a theme for CM but for the most part, the themes available loses some functionality within the rom...

Thanks alot for the help, i just installed CM and its working great... I may try jacmyheroskiv2 but for now I am probably gonna stick with it for now!
I appreciate all the opinions!

Since you chose Cyanogen's ROM (my personal favorite) try CyanogenMod v. 3.9 if you didn't already and then install Dark Hero v. 3.9 for a sorta the best of both worlds thing.

Either way install CM's Recovery 1.3.1 so you can backup with nandroid and recover from the recovery menu.
Later if you don't like one build over another you can flash back.

Um....hmm, can't really answer that one. I've tried like all of the roms out there, though I've never really had the same experience twice. I would just nandroid backup and spend time with all of them until you find the one that works best...

True, but I'm just looking for ROMs that people recommend/use daily that work well. I'm gonna try DamageR right now, I've already tried DamageControl and Flipz, so I'm gonna try some other ones and see how it goes.

SEARCH AND READ...that's seems to be the answer to every single post being made today. It's all here in black and white. One search I recommend in all honesty is search the word:
"BENCHMARK" and read the thread started by flipzmode. It's a really good read.
I heard that CakeButt.ClownPenis 1.3 was really fast!!!! Check it out.

I just spit coke all over the computer at school...thanks Kbizz.
RegawMOD is pretty good and the new FreshToast is also fast once it's setup right... I've tried just about every 2.1 rom available on this site and those are the ones I like the most.
I know it benchmarked the worst but as far as regular use RegawMOD 2.1 is the best and fastest running rom in my experience, that is also on the .29 kernel...
If you search for flipzmode benchmark you will see that all 2.1 rom all run about the same speed.
Other then flip/toast OC rom should run the fastest and its the only rom that will actually show a big difference in benchmarks.
Water it down like all the other "fast" roms and youll have one that is actually fast do to overclocked processor.
Its not made for everyone, and the camera isnt working yet (i have a feeling its not far away).

Hey no problem!! Bout choked myself when I first read it.. My favorite rom name to date!! Wish I could cook.....
This is hardly a scientific analysis, but I have been running DC, flipz, and Regaw's roms interchangably for the past few weeks, and today switched from Sense to the Helix launcher.
The biggest difference in UI performance came from ditching Sense...it was actually a noticeable difference in responsiveness
That being said, I don't think you'll notice a whole lot of difference between the individual ROMs with Sense, so base your choice on what programs/features each ROM has versus which is fastest...in everyday use, you won't be able to tell a difference, IMHO.
So I got DarchVanilla, and I really like it, but the market doesn't have all my apps.. Is there a fix for this yet?? I really like this one, it's very responsive and close to lag free.

+1 The reason I chose RegawMOD is because it was basically a stripped down rom. It allowed me the room to load the programs that I wanted without having to strip useless (for me) programs from the rom. Very nice, stable.
I've found that using Ic3Rom with some apps removed from it, the old OpenGL restored on it, and Launcher2 installed, it's incredibly fast. It looks like AOSP, but has the current stability and function of a HTC ROM. Give it a shot if you haven't
I've used almost all of the roms available out there I thing fresh works better, if u don't want lag you would hve to use aosp

+1 for RegawMOD being the best of the ones currently available that gives me what I want. I really like fresh 2.0d except that is was really laggy IMO too. I can't handle laggy, and RegawMOD doesn't appear to have any of that lag, and so far everything I need and want works just fine on it, including googlevoice, but I only use googlevoice for my voicemail, no idea about sending and receiving calls with it.

if i had to cast a vote, it would be a spin off regawmod(its the rom i built my current rom off) who is obviously the most direct desendant of damage control. that being said, i would personally love nothing more than to rock dcv1 all day(by FAR the most stable) ifffff-the trackball led wasnt a complete deal breaker for me.

Consensus: Best ROM at the moment?

obviously, it all depends on what you're looking for, but my money's with Fresh.

I've played with all of them and the best for battery life, signal and over all just awesome is DamageControl 3.2.2.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700649
I really like AOSP, so Bugless Beast has been nice. I don't really dislike the HTC homescreen or lockscreen, but I don't like the contacts, text messaging app, music app, browser, etc.
However bugless beast has some rough spots, there is an fc that shows up once in a while (not a problem, just annoying) and it doesn't show up as a usb drive on the computer all the time.
Fresh is probably my second favorite, and it isn't far behind even though it is almost straight Sense. I see a lot of people say it is their favorite. It seems like it may be the most robust and stable custom ROM as well, but I haven't tried all of them, only half a dozen or so.
I like Bugless Pete's...
but moved on to Fresh because I like Sense. Plus I like the fact I can use apps2sd.
This is a matter of opinion. You need to decide for yourself. I am using Culkulins ROM and really like it. In b4 this is moved to general / q&a
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Only tried Fresh and Damage Control so far but I like DC better, I could tell an immediate difference in performance, unlike with Fresh. Both have Apps2sd which is a must for me. Apparently this phone has more app storage than most other Android phones, yet not even close to enough for me. I couldn't even put any graphic intensive games like Asphalt on before apps2sd due to lack of room.
Damage Control works great for me as far as 2.1 roms. Just look at the activity for that thread.... most popular IMO and for good reason with all of the dconfig options and updates. They were one of the first to incorporate the OTA update into their rom... they stay on top of things.
So Frech has the HTC Sense? I'd like that.
Also, will installing these different ROMs wipe my data? If so, what backup utility you recommend?
I like the fresh rom, but i'm using DC atm because of the OTA update built into it, i need the grounding fix but when fresh fixes it i'll be moving back.

I use titanium backup for the app data backup/restore and android commander for the app program backup/restore.
Damage Control also has Sense, though you have the option to disable it.
In case it hasn't been said enough yet - DamageControl all the way. Awesome ROM!
I dont mean to be a d**k but you have to read and experiment on your own. There's no such thing as the "best" rom. Clearly all the devs here put a lot of work into their roms and the least you can do is try it and see which you like the most. Are you even rooted?? Your questions give the impressions that you don't even know the basics of rooting or installing your own roms...read the stickies
and yes both Fresh and DC have the Sense UI
I use a modified Damage Control myself
Added in the latest busybox, Bash 4.1, made some tweaks to dalvik-cache to make it use the cache partition instead of the system partition (seriously, the cache partition is ~160megs and barely gets touched normally ), among other things.
It is worth noting that Damage Control (in my opinion) is quite good itself and stays pretty up to date, with a lot of nice features.
DamageControl my fav so far.

I understand, but I figured that by seeing what the recommendations are, I'd be able to exclude some unmentioned ROMs. Makes sense...
I am not rooted at the moment, but I am familiar with it (developed for my HTC Dash years ago). I haven't had much time at all to dive into rooting until nw. Unfortunately, the OTA update was run on this device so now I'm at the mercy of the devs around here to discover a workaround.
Damage rom for the battery life. Seriously guys , if anyone and I mean anyone is *****ing and moaning about battery life , then they haven't tried DC's rom yet. And if Damage ain't on then trevE will answer.
I find a close second in polish and likability is Fresh's rom. Great rom . And I've run that one too.
I also ran Finisher by magnus.
And the froyo by avalaunch. Which is great but I need my camara and I hate having to flash to get it and then flash back.
I've also flashed Hero's over rom. But i didn't like the guys attitude in a couple of posts so I took it off.

Im actually a really nice guy. I just let my personal life interfere with my development life. Ive apologized multiple times and will once more. Im sorry. My ROM sucks btw lol

Stick with stock rom Or CM7

So i was thinking of changin my rom to Cm7 just for android 2.3, is it laggy? dose it drain the battery more ?? Advice please
Im using CM7 and im loving it my battery seems to be better with cm7 running and its not laggy. However i did mess with the cpu settings and my battery died proper quick but now ive restored its all good again. Try it out and see if you like it
IMHO CM7 provides loads of additional features to the Buzz handset. O.k, as a custom rom it has bugs here and there but that's par for the course and most major ones get sorted. CM7 is the way forward ... there are new roms challenging the top spot but aren't quite there yet. You can always backup current rom and restore it if you don't get on with CM7 so no harm in trying it!
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA Premium App
As said above, I would say to give it a try. Take a Nandroid backup beforehand, and, if CM7 doesn't suit you, you can always get back to your backed up Stock ROM.
Its definitely worth switching though. I am extremely pleased with it.
Only bad thing about CM7 is the font size. It is extremely small that it looks pixelated and takes out the wow out of the UI.
HTC sense looks best IMO, only reason I root is to get app2SD. Thats it.
I always use stock ROMs. Sorting out the bugs itself is a big time eater. I hate it.
Wtf is wrong with the font size on CM7? It's the same for me and was the same on stock/wildpuzzle... and bugs? pfft lol, that's why you stick with the stable release.
Anyway it's your choice, if you're happy with sense/stock, stick with stock or wildpuzzle or the DK sense rom, if you don't like it and wanna try something new and has heaps of themes, get CM7.
Besides, Font Size can be increased as per your will in CM7.
stay with the stock rom, is better, CM7 allways have a lot of bugs

Most of the designs on CM7 are made for high resolution phones, Wildfire having a lower resolution doesn't look great. Post screen shots of your app-drawer, desktop so on.

Bugs are not enough reason to ditch an OS ?. One bug scares people away. Just one bug.
I am not a developer, just an average user. If you can't satisfy me, then you won't sell anything big. Unfortunately, its so.
I don't get orgasm about any new version of anything. I want things that work seamlessly. Changing versions without solving bugs won't help.

This was true, not any longer, after nhnt11 made the required changes to make CM7 look like it is supposed to on LDPI Devices.
Anyway, its unfortunate that CM didn't suit you, but that is exactly why I think all posts in this thread ask the OP to try out CM, No ROM is perfect, everyone knows this, but, a particular bug for someone may be no big deal to another person. It's all about preference. As for me, even I am an average user, not a dev, and, yes, I am not saying CM is bug free, but, for me, they are no deal breakers.
Who said anything about changing versions? I just said stick to the stable releases, not change whenever a new nightly is released, and if you want the bugs to be resolved, post it to the issue tracker, or tell the devs about the bugs and don't whine about it.
It will get fixed eventually, all you have to do is wait.

I spend money/time on something not to wait(spend more time) but to use it. You still don't seem to be able to understand the viewpoint of someone else. And haven't posted any screenshots. What else would be a way to compare ?
Stable release ?. The number of stable releases devs make kinda doesn't go with "stable" actually. There hasn't been a developer version of ROM without bugs.
I go for perfection, bugs just puts me off.
A guy asked which he should use Stock or CM7. And we gave our views from experience with both. As 3xeno said, its all about preferences.
Even this stock ROM has bugs, but chances are big that you will find some more on CM7, altough I've never worked on it. But the nice thing about it that on CM bugs will be fixed eventualy, whilest on stock ROM you're left alone with it..
Perhaps a first step is to go away from sense. I liked sense, but installed Homelauncher pro just to try, and I have found out that I liked it even more than sense. I am now in the stage where I gradualy change all the stock things on my ROM (for so far it is possible). So I know now that I ceryainly will change my ROM once I can.
So you really have to try: you don't realize what can get better unless you have seen other options. And if you are hesitating because of the 'big' step of changinf ROM, perhaps try to change some typic stock things. You will see for yourself if you want to go and see more of what other ROMs have to offer you.
Or that is at least my oppinion: as stated, I've always worked and am still working on the stock ROM.

Why Are Custom Roms Worse Than Stock Roms?

i had installed a custom rom based on 6.5 on my hd2. its supposed to be a stripped down version of the stock rom, so its supposed to give longer battery and better performance. but its got terrible battery life, and camera and pictures look horrible. the stock rom gives batter cam and pics, and the battery is WAYYY better. can someone explain why this is so if this is supposed to be better than a stock rom?

I haven't had any of those problems with HyperdroidGBX. Only static I get in a call is from having the volume up too loud and that's not from the call. My cameras work fine and take good quality pics for a phone. Battery life is good... for Android.
I tend to go into all types of settings after a new install and tweak and optimize as much as possible so I might be getting better results.
I tried WM6.5 for half a day when I got the phone. Hated it so I rooted and ROM'd quickly. Can't attest to it's abilities. I am curious to test WM7 but Android does everything I need and more I don't know if I'll ever test it.

I had no idea you were the same dude who has been posting the various threads on porting iOS and running WP7 apps and now with why are custom ROMs bad.
It really sounds like you got the wrong phone.
Here's the deal:
All custom ROMs are different, just as all stock ROMs are different.
I personally hate the Stock WM6.5 ROM on the HD2, it is buggy, slower, and you can't really do much with it. Have a little fun if you are going to use WM6.5
Flash NRG or another custom ROM that really lets you have some fun with your device, maybe a CHT2 ROM that you can change all the UI elements and add widgets and other mods as well as some awesome themes and such.
Battery life depends on your radio, ROM, and settings, so anything could be the culprit there, you might try different radios.
I am not following you around and couldn't care less about where you go, you just happened to start 3 threads that I happened to to read and reply to the effect that you didn't even attempt to search or learn about the device before you posted, that was all.
I had no idea you started all 3 threads until I just read this response right now.
Either way, if you are actually serious about this thread, I would suggest you really try out some really good custom ROMs and be sure to flash task29 before switching ROMs because this will really eliminate latent NAND issues that could carry over to the next ROM.
My suggestion is the latest NRG 6.5.x sencity CHT2 ROM.
edit:
for Android try running American Android from SD, everything works perfect for me on the latest build.

you were and i could care less what you do with your life as long as you dont harass. youre free to comment. but dont be a nuisance. i had a mod ban 2 people from the forum for acting up. and i'm a newbie. you shouldnt care if someone you dont know doesnt use the search function. and if that person doesnt, why should you care? if you dont like a thread, dont comment on it.. its that simple. but youre free to comment as long as you respect others and abide by forum rules.
if you are actually serious about this thread, I would suggest you really try out some really good custom ROMs and be sure to flash task29 before switching ROMs because this will really eliminate latent NAND issues that could carry over to the next ROM.

i tried 2 droid roms and they fell very short of my expectations. and they were highly recommended by others. i just dont want to sell my hd2 yet since its a great phone.. but if if i cant find a good rom for it, i got no choice but to sell it.
i'll try installing WP7 tonite and see how is goes.

and whats wrong with comparing stock 6.5 to android? ive said it before.. i installed 2 highly recommended droids on my hd2. and they did look good.. but they were slow, the cam was blurry with a green background and when moving the cam, it wasnt smooth, and the batt life was horrible.
on the stock rom, i didnt have these issues at all. dont get me wrong.. the stock rom is a bit slow.. but the above issues were not as prevalent as on android. and i got to go with my experiences as a base for judging the roms.

As far as flashing WP7, try one of the new NoDo ROMs and remember you can actually dual-boot the ROM I suggested from your SD card. So upon booting you can choose WP7 or Android depending on your needs that day.

because you cannot compare an operating system that has drivers specifically written for that device and compare it to a hacked ported operating system, you have not compared a stock rom to a custom rom, if you are going to compare them please use a winmo6.5 rom not android!
that would be like comparing windows on a pc compared to running a hacked drivers vedrsion of windows in a mac

ok, now we're making progress.. and thanks for the reply. you mentioned installing the new NoDo rom for WP7. does this new rom possess live services and marketplace? i read somewhere that WP7 roms dont have that.. but you can enable them with some hack. i want a rom equipped with services and marketplace without having to ruin the hack.. too tedious.
but i dont want to dual boot.. anyway. let me know... thanks.

you will probably have to contact M$ to get a code to enable the live services

Yes, you call MS and say you're running WP7 and need an activation code. They will give it to you, you then enter it into your phone and Live Services work just fine.
All custom ROMs are pre-configured with the "hack" and other settings. You just need the activation code from MS. This is the same process someone who has to hard-reset an HD7 would have to go thru.
Dual-Boot is pretty easy, you just stick a ROM on your SD card and choose to boot that if you want, it actually is pretty simple.

Sense 3.5/3.0 compared to 2.1

I am currently running NilsP Business Sense 2.1/3.0 and i was wondering what performence hit i'd take if i plunged straight to 3.5? I used early 3.0 ROMS and they were painfully slow.. I was wondering if they were the same now.
My 3.0 rom is fast. Just doesn't sound like there's a whole lot more to a 3.5 than a 3.0 so I couldn't tell you my experiance as far as speed with 3.5.
Nils Business gingersense 3.0 v2.1
Sorry, but ALL Sense 3.x ROMs drag sorry ass on this device. There's no way to get around it. The software is just too muscular for the device. You end up with a crazy amount of vm being used, and since NAND memory is some pretty slow stuff, the lag becomes something best measured in full seconds.
^^ what he said.
and anyone who claims their 3.0/3.5 roms run "super fast" and "lag free" must never have run a stock incredible lol because the stock inc is how this phone is supposed to run (sense 1.0)...sense 3 is waaaaaaay too laggy. the one thing that always pissed me off is the notification dropdown menu lag. sometimes it would take up to 5 seconds for mine to drop down, even when i was just idling doing nothing. very annoying.
The 3.5`s are pretty, but sloooooww comparably. Even with nothing added application wise, and overclocked, they lag. No reflection on the (any) developer, it's literally bunches more software for the device to attempt to utilize, when it's built for less.

Well, I will point the finger a little at the devs. As usual, it seems like the push is only for the latest and greatest, neglecting the upkeep of decent older ROMs with older Sense versions. In the past that hasn't been a real problem, but with the advent of Sense 3.0, finding regularly updated 2.1 and older ROMs is hard. At some point they NEED to realize that this device isn't a dInc2, Tbolt, or EVO 3D and cut the crap with Sense 3.x+. Sense 2.1 with some 3.0 elements really is about as far as it should go.
I thought Joel's Sense 3.0 ROM on this was crazy fast. Then I used a 3.0 ROM on my inc2. Big difference. At the stock clock speed my phone still has no lag on my current 3.5 ROM.

Love it!
But what's this about we don't upkeep our older Roms? I try to keep at least my Hybrid Speed update. I've had six Roms publicly ported and released. Hybrid Speed was my second Rom. In fact Hybrid was the most recently updated, even updated after my Desired Inc Rom. People are still using Hybrid Speed and still leave nice comments and send nice PM's about how they like it, so I guess I'm doing something right there. Thanks to everyone who showed support for me and my Roms as well!
I think a major part of rom development is with these updates and everything, we can work on them and fix them up until there almost flawless. Once we have done that, the development for that Rom is pretty much done. Depending on how far the developer wants to take his rom. Well mods and everything else. Most of the time what mods are in my Roms when I release them is actually how I use them and how I have my own set up. I like to leave everything else up to those people who just use the Roms.
One thing I've noticed. All the older Androider's tend to find a Rom/Dev they really like and they stick with it. At this point in the game they KNOW what they want in a Rom and what to expect from Roms currently on the board. All the new guys like to flash everything under the sun. Just proves that just because [insert name here] releases Super Rom V.infinity which just so happens to be blend between iOS, Android, WM, webOS, whatever they call BB os, lol, and then finally BREW mobile doesn't mean its the best choice for everybody. Its just that though, another choice.
Until then everybody should just continue using what they like and keep reporting bugs and always try to leave feedback and comments about what they like/hate about the Roms they use.
Man, I hope nobody thinks I actually have or am trying to make a point here. I'm just thinking out loud as usual.

I'm fairly dev-agnostic when it comes to ROMs these days. I'll check yours out. I seldom see the device for long periods of time but I've been flashing as many as I can looking for a good balance. I appreciate your input.

Well, I'm running on a 3.5 Sense Rom from SD card.
There was a huge eating of memory, until I installed AutoKiller which allows you to edit the limits of ram and on an aggressive profile, the Rom is now very well usable.

Why would you run 3.5 from the SD? That's gotta be really slow. I'd probably run something like OMGB or CM from SD but leave 3.5 on the system.

I run it from the SD because I'm still figuring out how to install on NAND and I'm also unable to sync with my PC :S
So for now I'm at SD and its my daily ROM. Besides the DATA image is 1GB size and with that ran tweak, its very stable.
although I'd prefer it on NAND...

Are you using Conap's Boot Manager?
I this k many of the left over issues present in these roms aren't necessarily the dev abandoning it, but rather they can't fix it, either because it would take too much time or they don't know how/can't figure it out. MMS over Wifi is a big one on the 2.1/3.0 hybrids. I've seen many devs try to fix it but they just can't.
Like Stang said, once a rom reaches Nearly Flawless state, which is everything is fixed minus the persistent issues across all similar based roms, its development is completed. These people don't get paid to sit for hours to make every little thing work on our phone.
I think this fact causes frustration among users, that life isn't kittens and rainbows and we can't have the latest and greatest working like a champ on our aging hardware. Its not the devs fault guys.
Choose CM7 or a sense 1.0 rom if you want stability and speed. Anything else will always have little issues that frustrate you.
As for me, I like to use one of these newer roms until I get frustrated by these little issues, then go back to CM7/1.0, then once I'm bored with that I go back to a newer sense rom... Rinse and repeat

ok, so I'm running a 3.0 sense rom in the Nils rom I have. There is no lag between home sections. (I don't have the 3d tilt accelerometer feature on of course) and as for the pull down, I will agree, sometimes it does lag, but I hardly ever use the pull down anyway, and my case doesn't make it easy to pull down anyway. I usually go through the menu button/notifications to have the pull down come down. Other than that...what lag is this you speak of? I also don't run a live wallpaper very much in order to help out the battery life a little as well. So maybe thats where some lag people are speaking of is being caused?
Maybe its just me, but I'm not experiancing heavy lag with my 3.0 rom and I am even running the latest kernel. I will agree however, if you want the fastest most optimized rom for a dinc, then get a stock rom of course. But the 3.0 rom I'm running is running smooth.
I'm Running Nil's Sense 3.5, and I love it!!
(if you have tried other Roms, make sure you follow his whole wipe guide in his Sense 3.5 post 1)
I love the speed of this rom! If you are happy with 3.0, stick with it, but I love the way the email looks and works in 3.5 (it's a little snappier, and allows for more customization)
While his 3.0 was pretty fast, I find 3.5 to be just that much faster.
Plus, gets even faster if you use Tiny's Kernel!
but when you compare either 3.0 or 3.5 against 1.0... 1.0 just sucks!

Sure its right here, lol--->
I'm using Nils 3.5, and while there is some lag here and there, its a good, stable, and fairly snappy ROM. I also have V6 Supercharger (way aggressive) and the GingerTiny kernel, and that helps.
Maybe I'm just not expecting as much...I knew it would be slower than stock, but I feel its worth it for the enhancements.
But, to each his (or her!) own.
