Hi, I got my Topaz today and im very dissapointed, I have no gps fix in any navigation software even in google maps, its still seeking for gps satellites (0) but no progress. Did anyone see this problem before, any solution or I've got damaged device and I must send it back?
// ok now, i got already fix fine but it takes couple of hours to get it, interesting.
a clouple of hours for a fix? that doesn't sound right, have you updated quick gps?
I followed the advice here:
http://blog.mohdimran.com/htc-touch-pro-gps-problem-tweaking/
and haven't had problems since. Even after an extended period of non use I get a fix after 1-2 minutes.
Use:
Com-port=4
Baudrate=57600
Are you inside a building or utside ?
Also if you have installed the VOIP cab file then your GPS will not work and you need to follow this post to rename a file and then restart your phone. After i did this my GPS worked very well and I get a fix within 20-30 seconds!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402228&page=8
With Com-port 4 and Baudrate 57600 i have when i ma outside a fix within 5 seconds!!
When i walk inside my house iGO8 will keep a GPS fix.
I must say that i own a old house from 1923 with no concrete and rebar so that helps with a GPS fix inside!
how can i set the baudrate when i using the internal gps?

For iGO8 goto: Settings 2/2 and click on GPS, there you can set comport to 4 and baudrate to 57600.
For TomTomNavigator goto Preferences 6 of 6 and click on Configure GPS, then again click on Configure and select: Other NMEA GPS reciever then you can slide the baudrate up to 57600 and after that select com4.
For other navigations i don't know where to set it.
I've done some testing and it looks works properly, when im tryied thirst-fix it was a little rainy day and I've hold a device in a hand and that was the problem i think. Device can't be in movement when I put it on the desk outside of house it allready fix the position ( it takes some time ). So im happy now, good-end story : ) Thx all to yours advices and sorry for my bad english, I'll hope you get the point xD
I notice the same experience:
- It's difficullt to get fix if you hold the phone or when moving
- It will fix easily and take not long for first fix when you put it outdour e.g on top of a car
- Fix time is unstable, sometimes it gets fix in 20-30 seconds but other time it takes long time, even can not fix
Compared to other GPS phone like Nokia 5800, the Topaz GPS reception is very bad.
(PS: I have tried a lots of GPS tweaks, tips but did not help much)
I am using newest Radio - 4.47.25.21 and ofcourse QuickGPS is a prerequisite...I get a fix in 10-20 seconds irrespective if I am standing or moving. Country - Singapore

i must agree, since upgrading to the 4.47.25.21 radio my GPS reception has been superb. I generally get a fix in under 30sec.
Even had a fix in my house after installing tomtom to set the preferances, was quite supprised that the GPS was getting signal, something that never happens in my house with any previous device or other radios.
Think if the battery drain is not high this radio will be a keeper

Wow, it finally works with radio 4.47.25.22. No more fiddling around. I got a first fix after resetting in about 30 seconds. After that, fixes are almost instantaneous.
I would advise this radio to anyone with gps problems
I have a fix within 2 seconds with stock rom and radio with TomTom Navigator 7 and iGO8
Just set your GPS to:
Com-port: 4
Baud-rate: 57600

Wow woow. Thanks Khemu and rumpleforeskin for sharing your experience with Radio 4.47.25.21
I upgraded the radio and now the GPS is very good. First fix was less than 1 minute, later fix is about 20 seconds.
I have been frustrated for 3 months since I bought the TD2, trying every tweaks and tips. Now. it's wonderful.
Current ROM information:
ROM 1.40.707.2 WWE
Radio 4.47.25.21

In the past, I've been using settings that works, but not a way that locks the GPS position in the fastest way, until now.
This setting allows all your applications, no matter how many they are to simulteneously use the GPS, and I get complete position lock in under 20 seconds for virtually every applications, INDOOR (near a window of course). The satelite symbols appear instantly, while the 3D fix time depends on application, ranges from 5 seconds to 20 is my impression.
I don't want to take credit for this, as I got it from here:
http://www.x7501.com/forum/X7501-GPS-Issues-1184315093.html
Basically, go to start>setting>external GPS, then set the program port to com 8, harware port to com 4, and manage it automatically. Then on all your applications, set the com port to 8.
That's it.
I was literally shocked at the speed. You can almost all it a instant locking of GPS position in all applications.
I have TOM TOM, iGO, Mobile Golf Scorer, GoogleMaps all almost instantly (in relative sense) acquiring 3D positions with the above setting.
EDIT: Please see post #51 on other combinations of settings that would also work wonders. Most of the time you should get 3D fixed in about 6 seconds. Or may be 10 seconds.
Doesn't seem any quicker for me I'm afraid.. About 4 mins from a cold boot.
Great !!!
This is the best my GPS has worker. Frist time ever in the house. One more
tip the baud rate set at 38400.
Thank you
the way i setup is:quick gps>gps tool>google maps...i usually get a lock in under 2 mins.
How do I set the com port to 8 in tomtom navigator?
I can't find it in the tomtom settings.
Bart
To set that in Tom Tom, go to main menu/preference/show gps status/configure. Then choose Other NMEA GPS receiver, set the baud rate to 38400 as mentioned above, and finally choose com 8.

com8 wont appear in my tomtom settings, but will wait for a gps signal if i set it to com5.
Google maps just says initialising gps but never does.

Did you go to start/setting/external GPS and set the software port to com 8 and hardware port to com 4 and let it manage automatically? Set baud rate to 38400.
In my Tom Tom, com8 appears as the first option, make sure you choose Other NMEA GPS device.
In googlemap, did you choose manualy setting it to com 8 before using GPS?

I wonder if your unit will work differently with a different ROM.

i'm using the aku3 rom with a 1.50 radio. i wonder if the tomtom version he's using has any bearing on the com ports. for me, after configuring to nmea and setting the baud rate, the first option is immediately com port 8. this is how it shows on my screen:
gps is connected to:
com8
ril on com6:
infared port
com7:
com5:
infared port
and believe me it now locks on to satellites much, much faster. when clicking on preferences and i check the gps status, by the time the screen loads i already have like 6 satellites locked on. and then after a few seconds 3 bars switch to blue which means the gps signal is already good. and then after a few seconds the fourth bar turns blue as well. as i've said, this is the fastest setting i've seen on my unit. wish i had this when i was using powermap in thailand.....though i'm not sure if the com port settings would be same. man, that program was funky =)
cheers
Hello!
I have a Ipaq 614C and I have a problem. When i install the TomTom i can't connect to the GPS. In the HP asset's it appear GPS: Present but in the status appear disable.
Anyone can help me.
Thanks.
John
Check in TOMTOM which GPS com port it's using. Then change to same port
as set in Settngs->Systems-> External GPS -> Programs com port.
I dont use Tomtom myself but I've used so far Google Maps and NAv4All and it works fine without any changes.
Good luck.
On my ipaq 614, the default com port for the gps is port number 6. And it works fine with that.
im also having some GPS difficulties with 614c: i already tried it with igo8, tomtom navigator and latest google maps. it finds satellites very slowly and rarely, mostly never. anyone got an idea?

Hi all, mine did not come with any quick GPS installed, the older (tomtom related) version from the 6915 does not work on that device any longer, where did you get quick gps? or is it hidden somewhere..? Since there is no navi software installed, only google maps..
txs
From my personal experience with it, it took absolutely FOREVER to connect to a satellite the very first time I tried. Took about 7 "cannot find a signal" messages before I finally snagged one.
After that, it was ~20 seconds to connect every time.
I really dont know what the deal was, but after that initial connection it seemed perfectly fine.
So my advice is, try again for a little while.
I also have problems with GPS on HP 614c. But the problem probably not in the chip, and in programs as Oziexplorer and Google Navigator satellites catch and precisely defines a site, and Navitel works through time and that in a minute satellites as though fade and data cease to be updated, Garmin in general satellites does not see. Firmware update has not helped. Anybody has ideas?
p.s. sorry for my english
With program Navitel has understood, the reason was in program MultyDID, it blocked access to keyboards and deformed a signal from satellites, Garmin does not function.

I agree with all these comments and the above regarding open space. GPS does indeed require a clear view of the sky... but one thing not so often said is that GPS needs a clear view of the NORTHERN sky... most of the GPS satellites are in a geostationary orbit above northern part of the planet.
To the guy who has tried leaving the phone on the balcony... I suspect your balcony is south facing (very nice).
I have also found that the longer it is since your last fix, the longer it will take to get a fix. GPS satellites only broadcast their "here I am" messages every 30 seconds and it is mostly down to luck whether your phone is listening for the right satellite at the right time. That's why it takes a while to obtain a GPS fix on all devices. QuickGPS and other software tries to expedite the fix by allowing the phone to calculate which satellites will be the right ones to listen out for, based on a daily positions log of the GPS satellites (called ephemera data).
GPS does work quite well on the 614c (I use tomtom 6.3 and Google Maps, both extensively)... but it does often take a long time to get a fix - sometimes even 10 minutes.

Very nice. I woud've never thought about that. However, i think geostationary orbit is when the satelite goes around the equator with the same angular speed as the rotation of the Earth. So these satelites actually go around in an orbit perpendecular to the equator. Yesterday i tested and got 2 satelites inside a room with north windows. Very cool. Do you use quick GPS. I installed it and downloaded the data for the next 7 days. I didn't notice any improvement. I use DESTINATOR 7 and Maspware GPSmeter 5.I don't really get it - who manages the data downloaded by Qgps - windows drivers or the gps software itself.
More GPS thoughts
Axlastro - the ephemeris data that QuickGPS and other programs download is nothing to do with Microsoft/Windows or with HP. It is official data on the positions and movements of the satellites in the GPS network. Provided ultimately by some government department, probably American.
If you have not noticed an improvement over a period of several days, I'm not sure why this is. This old posting might help you.
Ephemeris data is also actually transmitted by the satellites themselves. This is why, when you have recently had a fix, it is usually quite quick to get another one. Programs like QuickGPS are only therefore useful if it's been a while since your last fix.
Thanks. I googled the topic and got some detailed explanations.
http://wmexperts.com/articles/gps_vs_agps_a_quick_tutorial.html
I also found a thread that says that QUICKgps doesn't work with the ipaq.
http://mobilitytoday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16767
So that's why i don't see improvement. However neither of the people on that forum has managet to improve their fix times. Can you tell me wich program exactly you are using?
strange. i never had problems with gps. very fast . newest firmware from hp site ,and 3 different roms, original 6.0 and 2 roms with 6.1 . Igo,garmin etc.
Some more info
Really. Which program do you use, so i can try with it too.
I spoke to HP support and they said that it depends on the GPS software if it will use the aGPS function, so we have to check if the software we use is compatable with tha Qualcomm 6820 gps chipset of the ipaq.

Hi, I've got TomTom Navigator 6 installed on my Trinity and it all works fine, except it takes about 5 minutes before it picks up any satellites when I run it - does anybody know if there's a fix to enable to gps chip to pick up satellites a bit quicker than this? Even when I'm outside and away from tall buildings it's the same. Any help or suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Works fine on my Trinity. I think I have the following : Trinity-Radio-ROM-1[1].41.00.11-by-ZakMcRofl, installed so maybe try putting this Radio ROM on. There maybe better Radio ROMs but this one works fine for me.
Less than a minute from a cold start and even works inside the house. It is faster at getting a fix than my Kaiser.
I have the official HTC ROM upgrade on my Trinity and like the OP it takes a wee while to get a fix. I am learninig to live with it.
in my rom i have a program called "QuickGPS"; every 3 days it downloads a file (few KB) that contains some data about satellite positions - this should accelerate FIXing process... in theory.
Try it!
An alternative could be having GPS "always on" with another program running minimized!
I have the exact the same problem using destinator! Well i just read somewhere that a prog called "gps gate" seems to make our job but i dont know yet.I have to find it and try it. Plus i dont want to have always gps on cause i need battery to speak...
as mentioned in a previous post, id check the radio version u have installed, and maybe update it mate....
different radio versions run differently with roms......its pot luck.
try the 1.46....or the 1.50 radio....they work well on mine...
Radio 1.38.00.11
Radio 1.41.00.11
Radio 1.46.00.11/30.11
Radio 1.50.08.11
I tried the Radio 1.50.08.11 and found that it indeed did pick up GPS 2x faster than my original Radio, issue was it has no 3G capability, it switched me to EDGE, so I went back.
Also HTC QuickGPS fails to download the updates for me....
You can try that :
http://rapidshare.com/files/25607303/SeaSGEE.exe
It's like QuickGPS ...
Just run it each time before using the GPS (don't wait the 3 days) ... It's works fine for me ...
try PDAMOBIZ ROM's
try PDAMOBIZ ROM's for me they can get a much faster fix than all the others
maybe due to some tweaks - not sure but costantly got a fix in <60sec. compared to 4/5 min. in the same location
................or you could try the new radio thats out as of today for the trinity......

Radio 1.50.08.11 works like a charm for me....full 3G and HSDPA so I am not sure what the problem is on your P3600i.
I have found that GPS Quick Position is useful (even if just for the Placebo effect). Time to first fix is not an issue for me....lots of people complain about it on the Trinity and compare it to the PNA GPS units...but really there has to be something of a compromise on a phone/GPS/PDA otherwise the thing would be a Laptop.

Has anyone noticed their built in GPS not working? I have been using Verizon's GPS ROM and Valhalla Legends GPS server for months when it suddenly stopped working on Sunday. Some XV6800 users have complained about the same thing.
So is yours working and if so where are you located?
*Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, PA appear to be down.
I hope Verizon has not turned us off permanently. Maybe it's time to purchase an external GPS receiver. AFAIK they can't limit that.

I usually locked in 10 seconds 6,7 or more sats. and it just took about 2 minutes to lock onto anything and its in and out at about 4 satellites.

No problem for me but I am not using Valhalla Legends GPS server hack.
NFSFAN's 1.13 VZW ROM with the VZW 3.37.78 radio. I am not utilizing any hacks or fixes. TomTom is still working flawlessly for me. BTW I am in the Chicago area.
Tomtom
Are you using the Tomtom bluetooth gps receiver or the one built in to your phone?

GPS Mode 0
Using a registry editor I changed the GPS mode to 0 from 2. GPS is working again but I can only lock 3 or 4 satellites. Pointing accuracy is very poor and unreliable for stuff like geocaching. I've tried this outside and the result is the same.
Key to change and then soft reset.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Valhalla Legends\GPSServer\Mode =
Verizon out here in Kirkland
I'm also using Valhalla legends server on an xv6800. I just loaded the google maps program Thursday, so I thought it was related, worked for awhile then down Sunday. I guess its good to confirm it's on Verizons end, I spent too much time reloading and configuring on my end already.

Seems to have worked for me too (or for at least the last 20 mins or so)... I've got a lock on 6-8 sats indoors by the window.

My mode is already set to "2" by default. (I can't read, see later post)
No GPS joy here (Eugene, Oregon).
Just paid for GpsGate to allow iGo8 to run (after a very successful trial) too...
I think they want you to change to 0 from 2

what kernel do you use?
I use CM7_kernel_OC_1.4. I believe it came with the latest ROM. Yes, GPS works but it takes a while. When I had Kyrillos v9.5 installed the GPS lock was faster though.
Hello! I have the same problem. But I found a strange thing.
In the past when I used Froyo, GPS found my location with several satellites in use (more then 3). But now I see that it may found my location without any satellites in use. It's seems that something is broken because it's needed minimum 3 satellites to find the location.

If GPS finds your location without any satellites the only explenation is that the phone uses internet connection to find your location. Maybe that is the case.

When your wifi is on (even if you're not connected to any network) your location can be determined to about 50m about
the networks near your location. At least in Germany. I think it's maybe through the google cars which also check the wifi networks when they took pictures for street view.

Thank you very much. GPS status helped me. Now I can get a fix with cold start in around 30s and with GPS on in just a view seconds. Great!

Are you in flight-mode while using GPS, connected to Wifi or to mobile networks (2G,3G)?
I use GPS mostly in flight-mode, and it still takes some minutes (5-10) to get a fix. Even with updated AGPS-data, but with no internet connection (afterwards, waiting for the fix).
Maybe you can show me your gps.conf from the /etc/ folder?

Nope... Here is a link how it works. (It's the same like in Google Maps: the my-location-button)
