Has anyone noticed their built in GPS not working? I have been using Verizon's GPS ROM and Valhalla Legends GPS server for months when it suddenly stopped working on Sunday. Some XV6800 users have complained about the same thing.
So is yours working and if so where are you located?
*Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, PA appear to be down.
I hope Verizon has not turned us off permanently. Maybe it's time to purchase an external GPS receiver. AFAIK they can't limit that.
Same issue here... I was thinking maybe my phone hated me...
Tried in:
Santa Barbara, Ca
Simi Valley, Ca
I am the Portland, Oregon area and My works, but I lose signal quite a bit of late. But it cones back very fast.
I read posts on several sites - - - seems like VZW found
a way to cut the hacked GPS (valhalla) off this past weekend.
What ROM?

What ROM are you using?
Same here. I'm in Seattle and been using the 'in the wild' 6.1 update for the last few months with the valhalla update, and has suddenly stopped working. Not cool VZW.
why buy an external gps if the internal is woking?
I own a vogue is the same model as you are using, here en venezuela we dont have antenas as you use there, but my gps is working fine, wich radio are you using in your 6900? mine is 3.42.30 and there are some tweaks to improve the gps satellite lock, have you tried gpsviewer to see if its seeing the sattelites?
I guess it is out, my google maps is still "seeking GPS satellites..."
same here in st. pete, fl
I usually locked in 10 seconds 6,7 or more sats. and it just took about 2 minutes to lock onto anything and its in and out at about 4 satellites.

No problem for me but I am not using Valhalla Legends GPS server hack.
NFSFAN's 1.13 VZW ROM with the VZW 3.37.78 radio. I am not utilizing any hacks or fixes. TomTom is still working flawlessly for me. BTW I am in the Chicago area.

GPS Mode 0
Using a registry editor I changed the GPS mode to 0 from 2. GPS is working again but I can only lock 3 or 4 satellites. Pointing accuracy is very poor and unreliable for stuff like geocaching. I've tried this outside and the result is the same.

I'm also using Valhalla legends server on an xv6800. I just loaded the google maps program Thursday, so I thought it was related, worked for awhile then down Sunday. I guess its good to confirm it's on Verizons end, I spent too much time reloading and configuring on my end already.

Just paid for GpsGate to allow iGo8 to run (after a very successful trial) too...

Hello!
I have a Ipaq 614C and I have a problem. When i install the TomTom i can't connect to the GPS. In the HP asset's it appear GPS: Present but in the status appear disable.
Anyone can help me.
Thanks.
John
Check in TOMTOM which GPS com port it's using. Then change to same port
as set in Settngs->Systems-> External GPS -> Programs com port.
I dont use Tomtom myself but I've used so far Google Maps and NAv4All and it works fine without any changes.
Good luck.
On my ipaq 614, the default com port for the gps is port number 6. And it works fine with that.
im also having some GPS difficulties with 614c: i already tried it with igo8, tomtom navigator and latest google maps. it finds satellites very slowly and rarely, mostly never. anyone got an idea?

Hi all, mine did not come with any quick GPS installed, the older (tomtom related) version from the 6915 does not work on that device any longer, where did you get quick gps? or is it hidden somewhere..? Since there is no navi software installed, only google maps..
txs
From my personal experience with it, it took absolutely FOREVER to connect to a satellite the very first time I tried. Took about 7 "cannot find a signal" messages before I finally snagged one.
After that, it was ~20 seconds to connect every time.
I really dont know what the deal was, but after that initial connection it seemed perfectly fine.
So my advice is, try again for a little while.
I also have problems with GPS on HP 614c. But the problem probably not in the chip, and in programs as Oziexplorer and Google Navigator satellites catch and precisely defines a site, and Navitel works through time and that in a minute satellites as though fade and data cease to be updated, Garmin in general satellites does not see. Firmware update has not helped. Anybody has ideas?
p.s. sorry for my english
With program Navitel has understood, the reason was in program MultyDID, it blocked access to keyboards and deformed a signal from satellites, Garmin does not function.

I agree with all these comments and the above regarding open space. GPS does indeed require a clear view of the sky... but one thing not so often said is that GPS needs a clear view of the NORTHERN sky... most of the GPS satellites are in a geostationary orbit above northern part of the planet.
To the guy who has tried leaving the phone on the balcony... I suspect your balcony is south facing (very nice).
I have also found that the longer it is since your last fix, the longer it will take to get a fix. GPS satellites only broadcast their "here I am" messages every 30 seconds and it is mostly down to luck whether your phone is listening for the right satellite at the right time. That's why it takes a while to obtain a GPS fix on all devices. QuickGPS and other software tries to expedite the fix by allowing the phone to calculate which satellites will be the right ones to listen out for, based on a daily positions log of the GPS satellites (called ephemera data).
GPS does work quite well on the 614c (I use tomtom 6.3 and Google Maps, both extensively)... but it does often take a long time to get a fix - sometimes even 10 minutes.

Very nice. I woud've never thought about that. However, i think geostationary orbit is when the satelite goes around the equator with the same angular speed as the rotation of the Earth. So these satelites actually go around in an orbit perpendecular to the equator. Yesterday i tested and got 2 satelites inside a room with north windows. Very cool. Do you use quick GPS. I installed it and downloaded the data for the next 7 days. I didn't notice any improvement. I use DESTINATOR 7 and Maspware GPSmeter 5.I don't really get it - who manages the data downloaded by Qgps - windows drivers or the gps software itself.
More GPS thoughts
Axlastro - the ephemeris data that QuickGPS and other programs download is nothing to do with Microsoft/Windows or with HP. It is official data on the positions and movements of the satellites in the GPS network. Provided ultimately by some government department, probably American.
If you have not noticed an improvement over a period of several days, I'm not sure why this is. This old posting might help you.
Ephemeris data is also actually transmitted by the satellites themselves. This is why, when you have recently had a fix, it is usually quite quick to get another one. Programs like QuickGPS are only therefore useful if it's been a while since your last fix.
Thanks. I googled the topic and got some detailed explanations.
http://wmexperts.com/articles/gps_vs_agps_a_quick_tutorial.html
I also found a thread that says that QUICKgps doesn't work with the ipaq.
http://mobilitytoday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16767
So that's why i don't see improvement. However neither of the people on that forum has managet to improve their fix times. Can you tell me wich program exactly you are using?
strange. i never had problems with gps. very fast . newest firmware from hp site ,and 3 different roms, original 6.0 and 2 roms with 6.1 . Igo,garmin etc.
Some more info
Really. Which program do you use, so i can try with it too.
I spoke to HP support and they said that it depends on the GPS software if it will use the aGPS function, so we have to check if the software we use is compatable with tha Qualcomm 6820 gps chipset of the ipaq.

Now update the app
Install this

If you are after SR or cold fix update the second app (the one that fails)
Good luck

Hello!
I'm just back from a trip from london. I brought with me my P4000 thinking that I would be able to use it's great GPS abroad.
It never worked once.
I thought this thing had an aGPS chip, meaning it was a true GPS that could be assisted by cell towers to find a fix faster. So, my understanding was that it should have worked abroad, albeit slower to find a fix then here.
As soon as I got back home, it started working again.
Any ideas?
Mod Edit: Moved from Titan Upgrading

If you were roaming overseas, then you won't be inside Verizon's firewall, therefore you won't have connectivity to the PDE server. The standalone GPS should have still worked, though it probably would take a lot longer to fix due to the fact you moved a great deal since the last fix. Did you try to use QuickGPS to download the ephemeris data? That probably would have sped up your fix a little.
I'm using tomtom, so, I don't need access to verizon. Anyway, I'm with Telus.
I've let it stand by the window for hours and it never got a lock. I didn't try QuickGPS.
Should I have switched something in the registry to have it work in standalone mode instead of assisted?
Well, i'm living in Republic Of Moldova. WE have no aGPS here at all, but i still can use GPS function on Titan. I have to wait about 1-3 minutes for lock.
I have installed DCD 3.2.6 rom and 3.42.50 Radio. Use SeaSGEE to download ephemeris data and Navitel Navigator. But Tom Tom and any other programs work fine too.
PS Sorry for my English.
I recall having a similar discussion in an earlier thread.
See if any of this info helps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2538917
If you do that right, i'm pretty sure it won't even attempt to connect to a PDE server (when u change GPSMode), so you should be able to get a *slightly* quicker lock, as it won't waste time looking for that server.
I do also suggest using some other tool like QuickGPS to retrieve the ephemeris data before trying to get a lock; it *should* speed it up, but I don't know how true that really holds.
Ok,
Thanks for all the infos. I'm going to Madrid next month, I'll try again there.
I was able to get GPS locks all over Europe no problem this past July.

Well it doesn't matter whether you have Verizon or Telus when it comes to aGPS. I was referring to aGPS. If you aren't inside your carriers internal network, then you won't access the PDE.
The GPS should still work regardless, just in standalone mode, which is why I asked if you tried QuickGPS to try and speed up the lock times.
I was under the impression that there is a registry setting for the global "zone" for our GPSr to look for and that it was set to US.
From the posts I reviewed few if any folks have been able to lock overseas unless they got locks while traveling
GC, have you found any settings in the registry for this?
In QuickGPS I think the setting is as follows:
[HKLM] - Software\HTC\QuickGPS\region
Its set for US for me here in TN and I think someone from Holland posted on PPCGeeks a long time ago NL worked for him to get a lock once he found and got it via trial and error...
I am sure you are onto something here
I think you guys are really onto something here. I have had the most frustrating time with my titan because of this very issue. I travel outside of the USA frequently and in all my travels have only managed to get a lock once! All through Australia and Thailand with no phone signal I was unable to get a lock with either flight mode on or phone mode on. Even in Taiwan where VZW has some modicum of representation (i.e the phone function worked but zero data) I go no lock.
gc was right about the agps thing. Outside of Verizon network you will not get assisted gps (although strangely when in "extended area" roaming inside USA it still seems to work).
in the end i tried a hundred things to get a lock including leaving the phone out in the full view of the sky for 6 hours. Nothing worked except the gps mode that scrawnyb talked about. I finally got a (very slow) lock after what seemed like hours.
I really believe that osteo's answer about the zone (i.e. "US" here in USA) is also part of the answer. I can only assume that the ephemeris data has to be relative to where you are on the earths surface, so the phone having some idea of where you are surely would help (especially without cell tower help from agps).
Targitai, if you visit this thread again can you please check the setting in your phone to see what zone setting you have that assists with locking. You need to look in [HKLM] - Software\HTC\QuickGPS\region and check that you are not set to "US" or similar.
I wont be traveling OS for a few months now, so I cannot confirm any of the above. I hope others who are traveling see this thread and can report back.
Thanks for the helpful info on this thread. This problem has been bugging me for months. Strange this is that my bluetooth gps never takes more than about 2-3 minutes to get a lock, even after crossing to the other side of the earth, over 9000 miles to Australia.
Well,
I'm here in Madrid now and it doesn'T work.

How long did you wait, and do you have a clear view of the sky?
After traveling a long distance it can take some time to download the full catalog info on the satellites.
I waited a few hours in clear sight of the sky.
My old hp hw 6515 with a old stand-alone GPS chips can find a lock fine...
sorry, double post...
I have had my gps lock over the ocean in an airplane. I dont have navigation software installed other than google maps so I just used Visual GPS to verify I had lat/lon fix and a gps speedometer app to tell me I was going at the same speed the captain had said. No wireless data connection at all.
Hi, I have a similar problem, but when I'm in a no service area, the GPS locks in 2 minutes. When the phone gets a cell phone tower, never gets a lock unless I let him overnight catching sats. I'm from Venezuela, may be the cell phone towers or the network, I don't know, induce some kind of conflict in the position calculation of the GPS. In the flight mode the problem persist.
I'm running the stock Verizon 6.1 MR1 update with the GPS fix from here. The following GPS programs are loaded:
Fransons GPS Gate 2.6 - using the WM GPS setting to get Iguidance to work
IGuidance 4.0.2
Micosoft Live Search
Google Maps
Everything was working fine last night but this morning Live Search won't find any signals (even though I'm outside with a clear sky). Google Maps doesn't find any satellites. IGuidance satellite indicators aren't working and Franson shows a yellow icon saying "GPS data but no position" - Running OK!
Would someone please let me know if they have the MR1 update with the GPS fix from here and is getting Live Search information today. I'd like to see if Verizon has somehow "screwed" the data signal so this fix no longer works.
Thanks!
Did you try to do a soft reset on the phone? If they are blocking anything it would be the aGPS but not sure how they would single you out. Mine is still working and I am on DCD 3.2.6 with Radio ROM 3.42.50 and my GPS app is getting the aGPS info and then locking indoors.
i think that a soft reset is the GPS best friend
mine always works right off the soft reset
Yep - tried soft-resetting the phone about 7-8 times over various time of the day and still no dice.
I'm going to pair it up it back up with my I-Trek M5+ receiver when I get home and see if get locks on those programs.
Thanks!

just tried it here in NJ and it is working just fine
You might need to change the aGPS mode back to 2 in the registry. After upgrading to the latest PRI and all the GC aGPS stuff, I wasn't getting a fix in doors as I was. So some other post said that they changed that registry setting to 2 and that just worked for me.
GPS stopped working
Verizon must have figured out a way to block the aGPS. I have two XV6800's and both are out of commision. Worked last night, but not this "mourning". I even tried to install the "uninstall" cab by GC, but it would not install. Any ideas?
I have an xv6800 in NY and I just now got a GPS lock using Live Search inside my apartment. Seems to still be working here.
O.K. It's back up now. Verizon might have had an issue in certain areas today. I'm in Ohio and didn't have GPS all day. Now it is back up and running on both phones. Phew.
Sorry, didn't get a chance to post yesterday.
Mine came back up at about 2:15 pm yesterday in Northern Va and it's been fine since.
Probably some hiccup in the network or atmosphere conditions (sunspot activity etc).
Thanks for help everyone!
I had the same problem this weekend. My GPS (google maps) died on me. This was while travelling across Kentucky and Indiana. I tried a softreset a few times. Reinstalled Google Maps. Nothing. Monday, it started working again.
I'm beginning to think that Verizon has some issues with their aGPS servers. I'm constantly having issues here in central New York with not being able to get a gps lock.
Working great for me. I have yet to have a problem or not get connected within seconds.
how do you get the agps addresses and still have DCD roms? is there a seperate cap file for the Agps servers?
hello
has anyone considered a way to boost gps signal?
i am pretty disappointed about GPS on my treo, i tried to use it in high mountain without positive results, it also works bad/or doesn't work at all when the weather is bad
there are many external antennas but as far as i know it's useless for treo 850 because of lack of output :/
any ideas ??
i use tt7, igo8
one more thing, after 1-2hours of using gps tomtom claims that it can't find gps modul and i have to restart treo... is this issue of app or device ??
where are you using it? Did I get it right that you are using a version with the german rom in the US?
I used a US GSM Treo Pro for about the weeks for the specific purpose of testing against my Treo 800w and found the GSM Pro GPS to be excellent. I
You now it can go between aGPS and standalone but aGPS depends on proper settings for a carrier in the region you are in, right?
I used it in Italy, for now i use treo in Poland it works however i expected better quality, i found another thing after 1-2 hours of using gps - phone has 40 'C, this is pretty high isn't it?

The phone is going to get hot after two hours of using GPS (or watching video).
I find the GPS to be pretty good on the unlocked GSM Treo Pro here in the U.S. Starting QuickGPS and downloading updated satellite data, then opening Google Maps results in resonably fast GPS locks for me. Do you have A-GPS enabled or disabled?

I used the GPS on my Treo Pro outside today for the first time (using driving directions in Google Maps) and it worked flawlessly. It locked on in less than a minute and never dropped the signal while I drove to my destination.
I have A-GPS disabled via the Advanced Configuration utility. Do you know the specs on the German version? What GPS application are you using? Did you try getting a lock with an application like GPS Test then opening your GPS maps program?
i use tomtom 7.9 & IGo8. Both work quite good, but i found that after ~1hour they lose connection :/ therefore i claim that gps modul is poor in my treo and i

I wonder if there is a "GPS timeout" buried somewhere in the registry? I haven't had the GPS running for more than 30 minutes at a time - it has worked fine for me.
works perfectly , i installed new tomtom 7 915
I can't get a satellite lock on my HTC Snap.
I have enable "use GPS" in google maps. google maps will search for satellites and after sometime come back saying weak signal & some recomendations to look for clear view of the sky.
Garmin XT also can't search GPS satellites. I install GPS Test, it seems that there's a GPS hardware but somehow the signal reception is super weak.
I have sent my Snaps to HTC service center and the best thing they can do is change the mainboard. This also show no result.
Anybody, please help. i'm starting to get frustrated with this GPS issue...
Bing GPS
I use the Bing app and have similar issues establishing GPS signal. This is my first GPS device so I'm not sure if this is normal, or if the phone is crap for GPS, or if I'm doing it wrong. I try to keep the QuickGPS updated, but that doesn't seem to help. I thought AGPS was supposed to be fast, but faster compared to what? Maybe this is 'fast' for GPS. I have seen friend's full on GPS devices and they seem to pickup pretty quick. So... who knows?
One thing to definitely try is make sure quickgps is up to date and automatically downloading. garmin could NOT find my location without that up to date and it would show one red bar signal strength. once i loaded up quickgps, updated it, and ran garmin again, full green signal.
It's The GPS Hardware ...
I've tried it all with my Dash 3G -- and concluded that it's the GPS in the phone that is garbage. I've since switched back to my trusty OnCourse Bluetooth GPS and I get a lock in Google Maps in less than 30 seconds and in Garmin XT in less than 10. IMHO, the GPS is certainly a weakness on this phone.
It finally sunk in for me when I lost signal 9 times while walking a few miles down Beacon Street in Boston. Holding the phone in my hand it kept dropping the signal over and over again. So I gave up. Built in GPS is handy in a pinch (when you have 30 minutes to wait for it to find a signal) but for serious navigating I use my Bluetooth GPS exclusively now.

I completely agree. Simply because something is not working like it should for these others does not mean that the GPS is not good. I use garmin xt with my ozone and its is extremely fast at updating my position as i'm driving along.
Problem solved
Let say that i'm in a really bad luck. this is my first GPS device and its not working. After the 2nd time come out from the service center (2nd concecutive mainboard), then the GPS is functioning, normaly....
my maple can get lock on GPS signal quite fast. with AGPS updated, it can get signal lock within seconds (given you have a clear sky view). i found that it could takes some time for Garmin XT to get GPS signal, so I use GPS Test to speed up the process then start the Garmin XT.
so for those who can't get GPS signal. it's definitely your hardware. I also found that the online customer service officer at HTC is just a mere lips service / useless. they keep telling me to be patient and patient without real action.
There's a free GPS testing tool for Windows Mobile called GPS Test. Once that set up, you can find out which serial port is used by the GPS receiver in your Windows Mobile, and set Google Maps GPS setting accordingly. Once it's set up, Google Maps can easily find multiple satellites if you're on open space. Once it's using GPS, your location on Google Maps will be a pin point, rather than a large circle denoting your approximate location.
PS: Found out with GPS Test that my GPS receiver in my Snap is using COM4 port at 9600 bps

WIND Mobile HTC Maple users not getting GPS working PLEASE READ!
I went through four HTC Maples (two accounts each 1st phone was a warranty exchange for another non-related problem). Each of the four Maples could not lock in single GPS satellite. WIND tech support had no clue after many calls and tests run at their tech support offices in Toronto. WIND recommended that I get in contact with HTC directly to see if they might have a solution.
One call to HTC started the ball rolling and setup a trouble ticket. Within 3 days and about seven call backs to trouble shoot, HTC had the solution and both of our Maples now have fully functioning GPS with Google Maps.
The problem was in the ROMs that had an old version of Google Maps (both their WM 6.1 and WM 6.5 HTC Maple ROM for WIND accounts).
Solution: using the Maple's browser go to m.google.com/maps and install the latest version. Problem solved!
HTC customer service in North America ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!
Will I buy another HTC product? HELL YA!!!
Here's a gem!
My Snap used to take 30-40 seconds on a cold start to get a location lock (with aGPS turned on).
I installed the attached CAB (which just adds some registry keys, also found here: Here), which makes the phone use Google's aGPS server, and got a cold start GPS lock in 7 seconds... indoors!

The thread you listed for registry key changes doesn't appear to work.
Any chance you might be able to list it again?
Thanks.

Sorry, the link was bad. I'm used to posting links in that format from another forum. Anyhow, it's fixed in the last post, and here it is as well:

Thanks for updating the link.
I have tried both of the CABs for the non Nokia and both make no difference if you
can't get a GPS lock. AGPS simply does not work using the latest Google maps CAB
available.
The "FF Ultimate aGPS Tweak_supl.google_Generic.cab" actually makes Google Maps
take forever to just start up after being installed and still no location is updated
indoors. Also, the phone will not snyc now with the desktop and this is after three
soft resets.
Even worse is the fact the phone now runs slow as hell. Everything takes forever
to open and is VERY sluggish.
Installed the other CAB "FF Google aGPS Settings Generic.cab" and still the same
problems. What could be the problem?
Finally got fed up with the POS CAB and uninstalled it. So far I've notice that the
phone has recovered its speed opening items and the right ones not like before
with that POS CAB which would cause all kinds of problems. Snyc now works
and so this looks like I'm back in business minus the fact I still can't get the aGPS
to work.
Oh well, you can't win them all...
