IPAQ GPS issues and fixes - Sable

Hello. I have this IPAQ 614C and i'm using the GPS software IGO 8 . I noticed that it connects to the satellites very slowly , in about a minute , unlike any cheap car GPS that does it instantly .
Are there any fixes for the GPS module i can install ?
Here are some specs :
GPS_Protocol: NMEA 0183
Navigation+Chip(set): Qualcomm MSM6280 gpsOne
I know there are some GPS phones with SIRF chipset , are they better i hear ?

Use Less Bps
i use 4800 (and in settings its set to 115200 (which doesn't matther)
Lower speed -=> faster connect (at least here)
and use mgpscmd to open GPS port and use the option HOT START , exit , iGO (if under clear sky) should see the satelites soon after that minute or two

Hi,
Settings should be (in GPS applet of phone) Hardwareport = com8 ; softwareport = com6 Baud = 115200 ; manage automatically enabled...
In iGo set your GPS port to com6
Fix should take less then a minute....

SIRF chipset is better, 61x gps is slow unfortunately =/
if you really need to get fast gps fix with 61x, your only option would be getting a BlueTooth gps to pair with

QGPS application
I was using 2 apps as a QGPS application 2 get faster cold&hot fix as u can see here
______________________________________________________________
the old way from one of my posts:
Install this
http://uploading.com/files/YI4IJTCC/...Quick.zip.html
Now update the app
Install this
http://uploading.com/files/15FMK62B/...ckGPS.CAB.html
Now update the second app but on this update you will get at 79% a fail note
Ignore it and check your GPS...
from my testes you will get a better hot fix (time )
If you are after SR or cold fix update the second app (the one that fails)
Good luck
Ps at the end it will look like this
sorry about quality of the move ,I had to upload to youtube ….so I compressed the file

u can still use my old way but now I have extracted the qgps app from the ipaq 900 and I had&have good fix (so I cannot see 4 myself if the 900 app is better)
Please test it and let me know if it helps u

Compatible Bluetooth GPS Devices for Atom

I have TomTom software installed on my Atom, I've tried using a Polstar Bluetooth GPS unit to see if that would work but it fails to read the correct Comm port on the atom.
Does anyone know if this is compatible with the Atom, or of any other GPS devices (bluetooth or cabled) that would work?
Hi there
i am working with GPSlim236 from HOLUX and it very good and easy to install.
cool, thanks.
What's the battery use like if in use? The problem is that the lighter socket in my car is 'dodgy' to say the least, so the longer the life before i have to charge the better
(hmm...I predict being guided somewhere, losing battery life on GPS, and getting lost....SatNav at its finest.......)
The BT-77 (Nemerix chipset) from e-bay also works really well, especially considering the price. I have used this in Australia, UK and the US and have had no problems pairing it with the Atom.
Battery life is also good, as I've used it for a whole day with no sign of running out.
sometimes to connect GPS device, you need to create new OUTGOING port, and pareing the device
Thanks jeremy_elman, I will investigate.
Kropotov, I can get it to pair ok, and I have tried setting outgoing ports. The problem is that it won't allow me to set the outgoing port to the correct COM port that I need for the GPS. It comes up with an error.
I checked up on this from Polstar and they said to adjust registry settings. But even this doesn't work and they couldn't give me any information with regards to compatability. But I know the Polstar one I had works as it was working on an iPAQ 6340, installing it as a cable GPS device and setting the baud rate. The outgoing com ports on bluetooth could be set to the relevant ones for the device, and pairing was straight-forward.
Problem with GPS Reciver on Atom XDA with Tomtom
Hello, i've installed Tomtom 5.21 and the maps and everything is Ok. but i can't make the link between my gps reciver (Royaltek Star III) and the atom XDA. I've installed the partnership in the settings but it doesn't connect with the antenna. I've seen in my other pda (ipaq hx4700 and ipaq hx2790) that there is a bluetooth manager in the connection setting but there is non in the atom XDA. Do you know what's the solution ?
I've the same problem than you for the outgoing ports, i can't choose the one i want and i can't find the good port in tomtom gps settings.
Thanks

same with u, kropotov. i use garmin gps10 with ATOM EXEC. work well and smooth.
dlawson5
it's very strange... i have all com ports free, and can choose all, include 8, that tomtom need. Do you have other bluetooth devices, pared with Atom?
I'm using a Garmin GPS10. To get around similar com port issues i install Franson's GPSGATE. A downloadable trial is available to try before you buy. The two advantages of this software solution is that you can nominate virtual com ports meaning you determoine the com port for the TomTom software and secondly you can use more than one GPS software package simultaneously. I run both Garmin Que (navigation) and OziExlorer (topographic and mapping) at the same time. You can't do this without GPSGate. Many bluetooth GPS devices drop their connections regularly. I find that GPSGate holds the connection better and reconnects quickly if it does drop. I highly recommend you try this before chasing around for different GPS devices.

Atom with BT GPS
I am using the Atom with the Holux GPSlim236 and it works like a charm.
Rated GPS battery life is 10Hrs and it uses the nokia 6xxx handphone battery so easy to charge and/or replace when battery gets old.
I had some problems using it initially 'cos built right into the Atom is a GPS management software that manages GPS connections apparently so that you can run more than one GPS application in the Atom and all the applications can share the GPS data. However I find that turning this on tends to lockup the GPS application (MapKing) and sometimes causes lost connections. TURN THIS OFF. Besides, I don't see myself using more than one GPS application (but that may change ! looking for a good track logging software - anyone knows one ?).
The other thing I noticed which makes the connection more reliable is to turn off the secure serial communication.
With those two settings off, works like a charm and no more problems !

Gps port?

Hi,
would like to know which port is for the internal GPS system, I deleted the pre installed tomtom navigator and try to install tomtom navigator6.0 This program prompt me for a GPS port and I don't know which one.
Could you help me?
Hi,
this is what works for me:
WM5: port 4, speed 4800, internal GPS receiver
WM6: port 5, speed 9600, Other NMEA receiver
In the settings: same data and check "automatic management" (or the like, I
have an italian OS)
Hope this can help
Mauro
With AP Touch Rom 3.0 on Google Maps I have to choose port 4 with 57600.

via Settings->System->GPS I can select the com port on my T-Mobile Ameo DE
on TomTom you choose other NMEA receivers.
hi
in settings under external gps it asks for
programs .> gps program port ????
Hardware -> gps harware port -> i set it to com 4 57600
access - manage it autimatically is checked
and gps does not get any setting s in google maps
just says seeking sattleites ????
Hi.
In settings>system>external GPS:
GPS program port: WM5 -> com4, WM6 -> com5
Hardware : WM5 -> none, 4800, WM6 -> none, 9600
manage it automatically: checked
In TomTom (GPS status):
WM5: internal GPS, 4800, com4
WM6: other NMEA receiver, 9600, com5
These settings work for my device, hope it helps.
Mauro
On Google Maps and Delorme Maps I get "searching for satellite" when the settings are right, but it hasn't locked-on yet. When the settings are wrong, I almost instantly get an error message. So I'm guessing if you see "searching..." you have your settings right.
As for finding a signal, the achille's heel on this unit is locking on when you are inside (either a building or even some cars). Outside or inside my car it will lock on in 20-30 seconds, sometimes sooner. Inside my house or office it will fail 98% of the time. The sirf/star unit attached to my Palm will lock on inside my house - in the middle of the 1st floor - in under 20 seconds.
I think with all the trade-offs they had to make to get all 4 antennas to work together without interference, the signal strength on the internal GPS antenna got the short straw. I have top-notch strength on the cell and bluetooth antennas, so obviously they got top priority. I don't use wifi so I don't know how well it works, but the gps signal strength could use some work for the future X7502...
GPS, TomTom
I have a T-Mobile Ameo and recently I have installed TomTom Navigator 6.
when I start TomTom it takes between 5-20 minutes before it gets connected with a satellite.
Is this normal, or is there a problem..?
if not, what should I do to resolve this problem..?

GPS Hardware/firmware problem ???

After 2 days trying to make tomtom get a fix with me new (bougth used) Trinity without success, I installed GpsInfo to try to understand what was gps sending torough its comunicactions chanel (NMEA/COM9/4800), and found following:
It seems that NMEA sentences are sent 'without data', something like :
$GPGGA,,,,,,,,0,,,,,,*66
$GPRMC,,V,,,,,,,,,,N*53
$GPGSA,A,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,*32
$GPGSV,1,1,00*79
On other pda, between every comma, there is a data/number, that I assume is the info thata the gps is sending....
For me it seems that gps has lost it´s configuration and is not able to send NMEA data, but it is working because I receive NMEA Start/End heads.
Is this assumption correct ???
If so anyone knows If gps chip(s) can be diagnosticated/reconfigured/reprogramated ??
P.S. It was bought with WM5 and Radio 1.38.
I've insttaled Radio 1.50 and WM 6.140 (Niax) and sympthoms are the same.
Any hint ???
Thanks
sorry i dont know the technical aspects of your question as far as reprogramming the gps but i do know that unless i have the following selected i dont get gps in any programs:
settings -> systems -> external gps ->
programs
gps program port : com2
hardware
hardware : com9
baud : 115200
access
manage gps automatically (yes, checked)
you might already have done this but i wanted to cover the first step before you go then, tell tomtom to look in com port 2. i also bought a used trinity with wm5 and no gps but those settings was all it took and now it works. good luck!

Trying to reproduce your config, tomtom says 'No Gps available'.
I assume you are configyring 'another NMEA GPS' and com2.
What velocity have you selected in tomtom?
thats funny ...
i think a have the problem ... its possible to navigate with tt but in the tt gps settings everytime he says no gps device but there is a connection. shown to me by the coordinates and like i said its possible to navigate. if i set up the gps new in tt there he detects the nmea gps successful but only 4 maybe 2 seconds. then its again no gps device ... sry 4 bad englisch ... any solution?
edit: well tt show me flight mode all time ... !

Tom Tom 7 Internal GPS???

I have recently installed TT7 with the v7 map.
The thing is i can´t configure TT7 to use the built in receiver opion.
To make it work i have to manually configure the GPS reveiver in TT.
I use the black version of TT7...
Any workaround for this?
It's the only working configuration for p3600
- "altri gps NMEA" - com9 - 4800 baud -
I think that tomtom 7 is optimized for htc diamond and it has a different internal gps chip.
But working and this is good
4800 or 9600 baud???
I´m using 9600 baud, why do you use 4800?
I'm also using 9600Baud works fine here....
Actually this only occurs if you use the repack 3 of the original TT7 port (from Touch diamond).
I loaded this today as I had re-flashed my ROM and wanted to try the re-pack.
I have since gone back to the original port and TT7 doesn't need any set-up for the GPS receiver....it automatically selects the uilt in unit.
By the way....after a bit of research it turns out the re-packs were done for 2 reasons. One was to allow devices which were not on the original approved device list (hence they wouldn't load) and secondly to allow the use of maps aquired by other means.........
I am going to stay with the clean original........it works just fine for me....
Problem With Mine Too
ok i have:
TomTom 7 v.7.450 (9028)

Which Tomtom7 version did you use? If you used the re-pack3 verssion you need to set the GPS receiver (in Tomtom) to Other Nema GPS.
If it is the standard Tomtom7 from the Kaiser thread it should find the internal GPS receiver without you doing anything.
finnaly working
ok
1º thank you Andych for giving me that hint
2º i whant to say that i had to change my WM version from
001TNYSXY - CE OS 5.2.19588 (Build 19588.1.1.4) WWE
to
Trinity WM 6.1 Diamond edition by Akeo V2 ---- v2 because v3 is off line still
and made some changes for ex:
took out:
TomTom 7 v.7.450 (9028)
and put in:
repack 3 of the original TT7
map: iberia-13 v.720.1803
GPS settings:
gps program port: com1
gps hardware port: com9
baud rate: 9600
and set the GPS receiver (in Tomtom) to Other Nema GPS
thank you all
i've tested 4800 and 9600 baud without difference so i use 4800 but 9600 works fine too.
Internel GPS
Work the internal gps with the repack 1 or 2 version???
I'm using TT7 v.7.450 (9028)
Other NMEA GPS
Baud Rate: 115200
COM9
Works perfectly, in fact seems to get a signal quicker than it did with TT6.
PS - Using ROM 007TNYSTD
I ve testet the black cap with the NMEA gps settings and is is very slow.
Then a reinstalled the black cap to the original tt 7 i have imediatly a signal with the iternal GPS.
The original TT7 is much faster than the black editions.
I got the black TT7 from this forum....
I didn't know there were other versions but it does seem rather slow.
Make My Day!, could you give me a link to the version that you say is faster than the black one please?
I mean that was the original CAP ( 1 link )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401679
but you musst find the original (better) exe^^
I cant find it any longer. its delete from server where i find it.
Black repack edition: gps fix coldstart longer then 1 min only NMEA settings
original cap : gps fix very coldstart 5- MAX--> 10 seconds with Internal GPS
Ok well I'll try and find a version that isn't black then if that means I can get a quicker fix... Thanks for your help.

No the GPS is off only you start tomtom it start too.
The Batary life is very long.
But the 1 start after insatll it can be that you musst wait for the signal becouse tomtom musst search the satelites.
Can't fin the TT7 original CAB
Can anyone give the link, or link here the original CAB so we can tast that?

Manage GPS automatically was checked.
i waited for 20mins or more but still searching and can't get to a fix..
also i tried this GPS reg. trick
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\Samsung GPS Hardware\InputBufferSize: set from 4096 to 512
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\Samsung GPS Hardware\OutputBufferSize: set from 4096 to 512

but it didn't work.. I can search satellites but I can't get a fix.. i also tried the 9600 baud rate but it didn't work either..
ANY SUGGESTION/SOLUTION to my problem?
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

I hope you are not doing it at home?
GPS Connection always searching and no fix
halo brudder yogaguru,
may i know which port to change to 4 ?
GPS program port : COM7 ?
GPS hardware port : COM9 ?
CHEERS!
Hi guys.
I have downloaded a small app to test GPS ... was never using GPS before on my Omnia2 ... and cannot find any satelite !!! Was trying to change ports (7 -> 4) and define different ports in this program (GPS Cycle Computer - http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-gps-cycle-computer.html) but cannot make my phone seeing any satelite !!!
Have also installed [GPS] Mod Driver, set Port2 in GPS Cycle Computer but still without any success.
Can anybody share the GPS settings and explaing how to make it working, please.
Thanx a million in advance !!!
Hi.
Today was testing again ... on the open area (and not by the window at home ;-) )... everything works ... it just took about 5 mins to find several satellites.
Has set port 4 and 9, speed 4800. Have tested GPS Cycle Computer via port 4 - working fine. And also via port 2 ([GPS] Mod Driver) - working also fine. Next start of the program took about 1 min to find satellites.
Good luck to all.
P.S. Telephone module must be ON ... not in the FLIGHT Mode (when Radio transmission is disabled) .... in that case GPS module is also disabled)
Hi,
My OMNIA2 it was allways taking time to FIX position with NDRIVE, and with TOMTOM allways saying that signal was week or if I was inside a building.
I installed an app to manage GPS port and virtual ports and in this moment fix is very fast and TOMTOM takes about 10s to fix position also on movement...
It solved my problem and from othar OMNIA II owner so I'll hope it helps you...
