Hey,
Can someone tell me how to check how much RAM is available on the HTC Magic please?
Have you tried searching the Market? There's quite a few apps that will do this.

Can anyone tell me the best ROM to put on this 192MB version for maximum performance?
nk02's Ion ROM or SPF's European ROM (see my signature)

You are? Really ?
I've seen several video of the Hero now that's it has gone in several reviewers hands and none is reporting any slowdowns.
The hardware of the HERO is much like the one you have (except for the camera and the 3.5mm jack).
From the videos is running very nicely with no slowdowns at all..
Weird...either we've got a buggy version (may be a release candidate) that has leaked earlier.. or.. don't know..
I thought it was running fine on Magics with 288Mb of RAM...

Im running Hero 1.4, i have no slowdowns at all, so maybe you did something wrong when installing?
ive heard the hero and magic are almost identicle in hardware specs wise.only thing hero has on it is a 3.5mm jack and a dedicated camera button.look on youtube for htc magic running hero rom and youll see that the htc magic should have NO problems running the rom.you just have to find the best rom that doesnt slow down the magic.

I'm using 1.2 and it's smooth. I had to remove the weather widget, and set facebook contacts to update manually. Most of the lag is caused when apps are updating (stocks, weather, FB, etc..)
Rogers 32A here btw

Anyone tempted? I'm thinking of getting one. From what I've read, better screen, better memory, better camera, standard headphone plug etc.
I am...just because of the amoled screen.
Better do some more reading on it. It comes with 128MB RAM (less than half of the Hero or Magic) and the same size screen (3.2" 320X480) as the Magic or Dream, just has AM-OLED.
Here are the specs.

comparing the rogers magic to the mytouch is lame.. anyone using the mytouch is gonna be on tmo & since the rogers wont get tmo's 3g its not in the same comparison..
edit: of course since the op didn't mention a mytouch it may be of comparison to them.. Also however there sig says htc magic which I believe means its the same as the rogers..
Sure tmobile could offer beefier fones, but they don't, but the fact that amoled is not being offered else where, I would get it just for that...

Wasn't comparing the Magic to a MyTouch, I was comparing to the Galaxy that was asked about by the OP.
Sony's Android phone Xperia X3 will have AM-OLED, since there the guys that own it.

Otherwise I may have to get the Hero, if I can find a black or charcoal one.

Nothing to do with installed/installing apps, it's the amount of memory the phone has to run apps and the OS (forget Sense or anything like it). Infact the Galaxy is supposed to have 7.5 GB of ROM according to the specs, tons of room to install. Just limited on how many you can run.

I'm getting one anyway, people that use it say it's fast and has no lag, plus the other benefits like the screen, earphone jack, flash, does it for me. Considered the Hero but seems to be too many complaints for my liking, gap at end of screen, bad reception etc.

Wrong, Rogers Magic comes with 288mb of RAM and 512 of ROM (Same specs as the Hero minus the Camera). Quite a bit of difference between it and the 32b boards your refering to, and absolutely kills the Galaxy's RAM. Here are the specs if you care to be informed.

My Magic (32B) sees 96 and I think that Galaxy should have 128 free after initialization, because if it use ~100 for radio like HTC there will be no available RAM at all. Maybe Galaxy have separate memory for Radio I don't know

Hey.
I was playing with my friends G1 and I really like having the keyboard. I currently have a MyTouch 3G which is running nice and fast with King's Hero ROM.
I was thinking about about selling my MyTouch 3G for a G1 so I can have the keyboard and still have the same ROMs.
What are the pros and cons?
Thanks in advance :
The keyboard is the only reason I haven't considered upgrading yet.. I can't live without it, my fingers are too big for the onscreen keyboard.
How much RAM does the MT3G have? That's the only thing I'd be concerned about. If it's the same amount, go for it.

Flash memory.. aka storage space. With a2sd and all that malarkey, it's not really an issue.

The keyboard on the G1 is simply almost perfect, but the battery life sucks really bad (G1 1140 vs 1340 MT3G).Also the MT3g has more memory that makes it more possible to receive official updated.

But it's absolutely correct because it's an answer to the OP, which clearly relates only to new HD2s. Maybe you missed that.
But only new US HD2 have 576MB RAM out the box, all other retail HD2s (not the pre-release) need to the right radio/ROM
So in a nutshell, all new retail HD2s have the RAM but only the US one is activated out the box

512 rom - minus the space the rom and the radio take up, also minus thee space the rom uses when it installs after a flash.takes about 250-350 meg which leaves you around 200 meg storage space.
448 ram - minus 128 meg for graphics =320 meg program memory.
your figures are exactly what a stock hd2 should show.

Just make sure you flash something that says it's compatible with magic/mytouch, because magics use different h/w to the dream, so if you don't WiFi wont work, can't remember what else (bluetooth?).

It probably refers to storage on the /data partition on the NAND (space available for installing apps), not RAM.
EDIT: I believe RAM is seperated in to two, x amount for the system to utilize and y amount for the Dalvik VM
No Magics that officially support Sense have less than 288MB RAM. The only device with less than 288mb and Sense UI is the HTC Tattoo (256mb).

The rest of the RAM will never show up in any app as it's system reserved. If you had a 32B you'd see a value of approx. 100mb of RAM there, not 200mb like you do.

the answer is obviously yes. sense 3 with 2.3.4 is gonna be stock on the mt4gslide so once thats leaked you best believe we will have it. granted the mt4g slide has dual core processor and 200 more ram, so it can handle a bit more, you best believe our phones can still handle it, it wont take much more to run 2.3.4 than 2.3.3 which the mt4g already handles with great speeds. so just give it a month or so before an official build leaks and we will have it.
Almost the only difference between 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 is the Google Framework.
You can just flash the latest one (which is integrated into most ROMs by now, all those supporting Gtalk video have to do it), and you'll get whatever you really need 2.3.4 for.

There's a command line you can enter in Terminal that says something about ~626, but that does not report total system RAM. I'm sure someone else can explain that better, but the MT4G does indeed have 768MB of total RAM.

You can't have it showing right - because currently the Gtalk app was only built and adjusted for Nexus S, and was hacked to work on other phones. As such, it's not adjusted properly to be running on all the phones with different camera libs, and that includes Sense camera libs. Sense ROMs with 2.3.4 will cure it, if they'll have Talk app - which they might not.

Even when I had the Nexus S if your phone wasn't on stock you still had to find a work around to getting video chat to work on g-talk, then there was the issue of having it work on 3G and not just wifi.
