Hi all, i want to get a HTC Magic, and for some reason i found out that there are 2 version available, the 192mb RAM, and the 288 RAM version, i want to get the full RAM version, but unlocked, so i looked over amazon, and found it(link to it), but it's says it has 192 mb! And as far as i know, the 192mb version is an old, branded version of the Magic, so i don't understand if is an error there, or is it really 192??
If is 192mb, where i can get a unlocked with 288mb of RAM?
thanks

Beyond ram the network might be an important factor as well as i believe all that will get 3g on tmo usa will only have 192
The Rogers magic is 288mb. On importgsm.com they offer that version unlocked. It works greqt if you have at&t everything works perfectly. For tmobile you'll be missing out on 3G. I got mine from them last week andits awesome. Hope that helps.
thanks but 3g is useless for me, i don't live in USA, neither in a place where 3G is available, only wifi, but only rogers? isn't possible to unlock one of those?(if i buy one locked) I wanted to get the 288 mb version because that way maybe i will take more of it!(to install more things and run smooth?)

I bought my unbranded HTC magic with 288 MB of RAM.
Call them up request the unbranded model only. If you dont they will send you the branded version.

Hi. I was thinking of buying a htc magic from ebay. So I'm a little confused. Could someone tell me how could I recognise wich phones have 288 ram? I have read that the ones from vodafone (with the logo "with Google" on the back) and the ones with T-mobile logo have 192 ram. Contrariwise, the Rogers Magic has 288 ram. I don't know about the Google ION. Is this with the logo "Conference developer" on the back? How much ram does this include?
How is it the unbranded device on the back? Is there any other phone except from vodafone branded who has the logo "with Google"?
Finally, all these devices work in GSM network in Europe?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my English

Hi Everyone!
I am looking to purchase and would like to ask everyone which model to get if I want to use it on the Telstra NextG network?

If I get a T8282 which seems to be the more available model around, can I Flash the ROM to get NextG ?

No the two devices have different hardware, not just different ROM's, to get the 850 mhz for US 3G you need the T8285. Go to ebay.com.au for the best deals. You still are going to have to look make sure it is the T8285 on the Aussie ebay site but it is still the best place to get one for a good price. Also, some sellers won't ship to the US but several will. I have a bid in on one right now.
Ok thanks... I am not after a phone to use in the States. I am in Australia so I just need to understand the differences. Am I understanding this when I say that to use the phone with NextG - Telstra (Australia) I need the T8285?

Yes, to use the NextG network you need the T8285. The cheapest retail store I've found is JB HiFi. Can get it down to ~$1200 and they usually throw in some vouchers.

Hi,
Question guru's. i have a T8285. i want to get a cradle. some deals on ebay mention the T8282 and include charger and a battery.
link is here: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370173477502
The details mention:
Compatible for HTC Touch HD / T8282
1350mAH capacity
i only feel like using real bricks for my house, not my phone.
Above!
Dont waste your money, I bought one and the mini usb on the cradle is far too tight!
well i got one anyway and i'm wrapped. yes agreed to the above post its tighter than a 70's jumpsuit but still i can handle that just need to take it off with two hands.. i ordered another one for home. for 25$ no worries..

Recall all t8282!!!
Hi! Im a T8282 user here in Canada, if Im gonna stick to this model I need to live with out 3G speed and just settle for Edge. My question to HTC is why release this stupid T8282 model which is limited to 3G reception but then they also had the intention of making a T8285 version which has the 850 band 3G for North America + the 2100 band 3G for Europe and Asia? In my point of view HTC should recall the T8282 model and replace the hardware part that is responsible for the 3G reception to the ones that are in the T8285 model. All T8282 users bought the device in a premium price and should get premium features.
HTC is toying with their consumers and their main concern now is money, money and more money! This is also the same case with the HTC Touch Pro which also has a stupid specs with its 3G reception, compare it with HTC Fuze which they say is the North American version but if you look closely the HTC Fuze is far more superior in its 3G reception capabilities because it has (Damn!)Quadband in 3G/UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...details/?device=HTC+FUZE(TM)&q_sku=sku3090226
This Fuze version is not a North American version but a Worldwide Version. This is also the same case with T8282 the stupid version compare to T8285 which is the Worldwide Version
They should have release the T8285 first to the world and gave the T8282 version to the cellphone networks in Europe/Asia.
Now they are doing it again with the Touch Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2. But still alot of people are falling to their trap, in these desperate times HTC doesnt even feel a slight kick in their concience.
My Shout is Recall all T8282 and hardware upgrade its 3G reception capability!!!

The T8282 was released solely for Europe/Asia, however can also be used in Australia with Optus, Vodaphone, 3G and other providers on their HSDPA/3G frequency
The T8285 was released solely for Telstra in Australia
The handset did not pass whatever is the equivalent of "American Standards" for cell phones, therefore it is unlikely to ever be released officially in US.
Europe, Asia and Australia use all the frequency's over various providers.
Out of curiosity dont other providers in Canada and US use different frequency's for 3G/UMTS/HSDPA?
I'm with Vodaphone in Australia and have great 3G speeds using HTC T8282.

enjoy your great device, or sell it
I bought the T8282 from o/s to use with Telstra not realising there was a difference. Mine runs HSDPA/EDGE/3G fine as far as i can tell.
Does it just mean I cant get Telstra's NextG HSDPA speeds?
What is the max HSDPA speed the T8282 can achieve?
T8282 or T8285
Just want to verify that nothing has changed with the status of the ability to get 3G in the USA (AT&T) on the T8282.
And if the T8282 is limited to Edge, what are users that have one in the USA think of it. I have heard it is fast in spite of the lack of 3G?
And if you were buying a T8282 vs a T8285, what would the price difference be?
I may be confusing the Leo with the Blackstone.
Mark
The Dream is unable to get on AT&T's 3G, and presumably others. This is do to a hardware problem that only allows UMTS on the following frequencies: 800/1700/2100 MHz. AT&T's 3G operates on 850/1900/2100 MHz.
A deeper look into the Dream's hardware you see that it uses the Qualcomm RTR6285 radio chipset and it is capable of working on all of those bands. So this means that it should be able to work on AT&T's 3G, but something needs hooked up or changed out.
There are 2 power amplifiers that are used, acpm-7381 and acpm-7391 which operate on the 2100 and 1700mhz bands respectfully. So could it be as easy as switching out the acpm-7391 amp for a acpm-7331? It is chip made by the same company that has the same pinout but uses 1900mhz instead of 1700mhz. It may also have to be wired into another lead on the radio chipset, I was unable to find a schematic for the RTR6285 that show such info.
This could be a cheap option in getting the G1 to work on any 3G network, under $10 if we can find a vendor that deals in individual quantities for the chip.
I am by no way advanced in electronics but I am willing to try somethings out if this makes sense to others too.
a lot of my info came from: tiny(dot)cc/c3wvv
and there is a nice pic of the insides too.
That would be incredible if possible, although given the fact that it hasn't really happened with any HTC device ever to my knowledge, there must be something about it that makes it difficult to do.
Keep mind that the Rogers Dream includes 850/1900Mhz, so buying one of those is a lot easier than modding a T-Mobile G1.
this is true. i have a Roger's Dream. I found mine on ebay already rooted (mint condition) and running a WesGarner Rom w/ RA Recovery 1.5.2R on it. I spent 250 on it and am very happy.
Recently I was able to port the KingxKlick ASOP 2.1 Rom using a link found here on the forum and its blazing fast. Only a couple things dont work(video being one) but thats b/c of eclair and drivers- which are soon to be fixed I am sure. If you go this route PM me if you'd like to know more about porting roms to this phone as the regular G1 roms usually dont work.
I <3 this phone on AT&T. It's an iPhone killer.

Be careful buying Rogers Dreams off eBay for use on AT&T in USA. Latest Rogers firmware upgrade locks down the device so that it's no longer rootable. As far as I know, no work-around exists yet, so you will be stuck with stock 1.6 ROM. Just make sure the SPL/Radio versions are pre-upgrade ones if you want to be able to flash custom ROMs on it.
If you're not afraid to open up your phone ... switching out the UMTS circuit board with that from a Rogers phone would be very, very easy. Then you could keep your own mainboard, your existing ROM, recovery, root, and all.
I've taken my G1 apart before for screen repair, and it's not that bad. This is from the service manual, I outlined the UMTS board in blue:

So ... anyone wanna sell me a bricked Rogers G1? Or maybe just your UMTS?
i am glad to see that people are still looking into this possibility. i have been researching this a lot lately and i am inclined to agree that swapping the amplifiers on this phone will cause it to work on atts 3g network. i believe we will need to install the rogers radio driver after modding the hardware to get it to use the correct freqs. the reason i think the rogers driver will do the trick for changing radio freqs is i saw someone who on another forum accidentally installed a g1 version of android on his rogers dream and the phone still worked on the rogers network but only edge connectivity in a 3g area. i believe this is because the phone was trying to use tmobile freqs. just speculation.
i have been unable to find a source for small quantities of the needed components but they are available in bulk. perhaps if we can get enough people together we could do a group buy. i was thinking we could find a bricked rogers dream or perhaps another htc rogers handset like a magic to source parts in small quantities but more reasearch is needed as to which phones are readily available and contain the proper PAs. possibly other att 3g htc devices like the tilt. sorry for the long post. let me know what you guys think about all that. lets get these handsets on own 3g network.
@Audacious
i think that's actually the antenna you have outlined.
brain dump
sorry i just have to regurgitate all of the things i have seen so far about this process.
if we could get a rogers dream with a working main board we could swap the whole main board but why bother if you have a working rogers handset
the power amps are surface mount components. it might be tricky to remove and replace them. if anyone has the donor PAs i have a g1 i would attempt this surgery on
i would attempt with this method
www(dot)engadget(dot)com/2006/03/07/how-to-make-a-surface-mount-soldering-iron
g1 teardown for refrence of what will need to be swapped.
www(dot)phonewreck(dot)com/2008/12/09/t-mobile-g1-review-and-teardown
again any input would be appreciated.

Sorry, but the amplifiers are on the MAINBOARD.
If you see the four red circles you have drawn... look at the upper right one - directly below it is a black rectangle. That black rectangle is covering the amplifiers.

actually it is on the back side of that board, but right about where you are saying. it is almost exactly opposite where the radio antenna (the one that is outlined in blue) plugs into the main board.

The red circles are from the HTC service manual, not from me.
To those who are saying that circuit board is the antenna, this is the excerpt directly from the HTC service manual.
The antenna itself is the metal strip around the top of the G1 housing.
It makes contact with the UMTS board on the underside, here. (blue dots)
But coming back to the amplifiers, you may be right about that. I have heard of a person who switched an HTC Fuze 3G board into his G1 to use it on AT&T. I'm not really sure how true it is. But anyway, the HTC service manual used a prototype G1 that is in some ways slightly different from the market model. Here are a couple more photos from the inside of mine.
There was someone trying to do this when the G1 was launched. They found out that there is only one chip that makes the difference between t-mobile and at&t 3G. If you search the old posts, I'm sure you'll find it.
donor phone
does anyone have a dead htc handset that is compatible with atts 3g they would be willing do donate to this cause? as i said before i have a working g1 i am willing to sacrifice to try to get this to work.
How's this lol:
Buy any roger's android phone, put wireless tether on it, and glue it to the back of your G1=p
@mejorguille hahaha...might be a little bulky but the duct tape holding the two together would add so much class

yeah but this model as well as telus variant are rumoured to only support AWS bands for roaming.
it's said these models will not support AWS as native home network options.
I'll unlock and test this sucker out when my buddy gets in. he's with wind.
rogers called me yesterday and asked if i wanted to do that...
i was 7th on the reserve list. I had to work.. they even offered to pick me up in cab to come to the store.

Indulge me.
The Korean SGS3 comes with 2GB RAM and the quadcore Exynos 4412 chip:
http://phandroid.com/2012/06/08/sk-telecoms-galaxy-s-iii-merges-quad-core-cpu-and-2gb-ram/
South Korea uses 2100Mhz HSPA band - as does the UK where I live.
http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html
What's stopping me from (somehow) buying a Korean one and importing it for use here in the UK?
Also, any ideas how I would even go about buying something from Korea??

Willing to bet, the Korean version won't use a Micro-Sim that GSM carriers use, as they're network SK Telecom if i recall does not require the use of sim cards. Also chances are the Korean version will be locked to region specific carriers there.
Don't go for it. Their will be a lot of issues with it. Also very bad developer support, worse than American version.
There may be other hardware compatibility issues with your network.

Can't you just buy off-contract sim-free handsets, like you could here in the UK? Not attached/locked to a network?

Quite a lot of the new smartphones in Korea come with usim cards..
Don't ask me the finer details.
There are 3 major carriers in SK, two of them operate WCDMA networks.
I would not go for this phone. Like somebody else said, bad developer support.

Why are you using an app to display battery life. You know the S3 has that built into stock now right?
If I have assisted you, please press Thanks button.

You mean that ugly stock battery percentage that appears next to the battery icon and takes up additional space? If you have noticed, I do not have any app but actually a circles mod that can display battery percentage within the battery icon.
For the dev support I disagree, it seems they will get the same hardware as the int version only more ram and LTE support so int roms shouln'd be hard to port, am I wrong?

Speaking form experience the SIM card issue is no longer a problem, Korean phones now use SIM cards, all carriers here ( SK, KT, LG all use SIM cards)
All Android phones here as of today (SGS3 is still unknown) are sold carrier unlocked, I've used my Korean issue GalaxyS (m110s) in various countries with no issue (India/China/UK)
Problem with the Korean version is that' you'll lose FM functionality and gain a useless DMB (TV) chip instead, also it's dimensions are ever slightly larger, so getting nice cases might be slightly harder, or you'll have to order from Korea, not impossible though.
Phones can be bought off the shelf here, they're just more expensive than in Europe/US
I'm pretty sure the american version dev support will be just as good as the international.
Does anyone have a way of identifying whether an Atrix is UK or US? Both have the MB860 model number, right? I am trying to acquire a second hand UK model from eBay to replace my aging HTC Desire but two sellers I have contacted have asked how they can tell. Neither has the box or manuals. Am I right in thinking the UK version is simply called "Atrix" and the US is the "Atrix 4G"? Is there a way of telling which the phone is on the phone itself (e.g. something in the "About Phone" section perhaps?
I want to make sure I have WCDMA 900

Well, yes, if you flash it. If it's locked, that's where to look. If it's unlocked, then there's no way of telling.
The picture below presents the ATRIX 4G AT&T. Notice the antenna plate below the speaker ? The antenna plate on the european atrix covers the whole place unlike at&t atrix.

I can confirm, my atrix (UK) has a much larger metal plate.
Edit
Oh and the UK ones have a soft touch rubber backing, rather than that ugly carbon fibre look.
But I suppose that could be changed too.

Because its more "4G" than the "Atrix 4G"... thats the way I put it in my comparison video.
The UK/EU version of the Atrix supports more 3G frequencies than the Atrix 4G.

Atrix 4G: 3G/HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA/HSPA+ (HSPA+ 14mbps = 4G if you're AT&T) 850/1900/2100mhz

Thanks for the extensive anwser, but the fact that att/us atrixes can flash an eu radio, which than works good for most makes me skeptical that it has anything to do with bands, although when i flashed my att atrix with an eu radio (living in the eu too), it had some rather massive power drain in idle, so this might again speak for the missing part of the antenna being solely for the purpose of the 900 band.

You can flash between the two yes, purely because its the same hardware chip however, the revisions are slightly different as 900mhz 3G is locked of at hardware level and not software level, thus explaining the lack of antenna for the phone. (It took me a long time to accept this, I'll be honest, you can see that from my other posts in relation to this)
The other theory I could think of is that AT&T are under some illusion that their users don't plan on going out of the USA and have had it designed for their 850mhz 3G band, and what ever 2G band they have.
I'll be honest, the signal strengths in the same place are different on both my atrix's. The UK Version can get better signal strengths than then ATT version.
