Constant Rebooting Problem - Touch HD General

Hey guys,
I've had my Touch HD for about 5 months now, and I noticed last week that it seems to jump into a constant-reboot-loop every 2 or 3 days now.
The only way to solve it is to remove the battery for 5-10 minutes, put it back in and turn it on.
While the device is in this strange mode, it generally reboots *just* before the "Loading Windows" screen.
I believe I was running Miri's v16 or v17 when it first happened, and I'm currently using EnergyRom HD, which appears to have the same problem.
When it first started happening I flashed from Miri's rom to EnergyRom, and also did a hard reset, allowing Windows to reinitialise itself.
Has anyone else had anything like this happen to them? I'm starting to get concerned that my incredibly expensive device is slowly becoming nothing more than a brick...

In this thread, Megawhopp had a slightly similar problem which was resolved by doing the following:
1. Turn off the phone
2. Put it in the bootloader
3. Re-flashed the custom rom
4. Immediately unplug USB cable and yank battery after 100% flash
5. Immediate hard reset via phone buttons
Try this and let us know how you get along!!

Thanks for the suggestion - I haven't tried it just yet, but honestly, I'm slightly skeptical
Also, I do all of my flashing via the SD card (BLACIMG.nbh), as I find it much more reliable than the USB connection method.

No probs, your call. Let me know anyhow if you get it sorted or not

Well, as I run Linux I've no choice but to do it the SD card way anyway, but I'll try the same test using the SD card method and see how it goes.
Thanks for the help, I'll let you know

Right well I carried out the steps using the SD card flashing method when the rebooting issue kicked in yesterday evening.
It took 3 attempts, but it seems to have sorted itself out again.
I've no idea if it's the steps that solved the problem, or just the luck of the draw though...

I had same problem, and I'm using default ROM without any 3rd party programs...
Just take battery out for 5minutes
then put it back, pressing the red reset button and then while pressing the red reset button press the power button release both and the phone will start and will work perfectly...

Yup, that's exactly what I do. What I want to know is WHY it happens though

Looks like I still have this problem. I can't recreate it at will, and it doesn't seem to be caused by any particular action I'm doing at the time.
This is so bloody frustrating.

Firstly, it's a "problem", not a "pb". You have a full keyboard in front of you, so why not use it?
Secondly, it's slightly worrying me now that this is happening for you on a *stock* ROM. I really hope this isn't a hardware issue, or I'll be in for a whole world of hurt

It looks like i fixed my problem by reformatting my sd card.
Read more here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4097689&postcount=111

I had the same problem, I found when I had 3G shut off and I had no or low signal it would go into a constant reboot. I turned 3G back on and never had the problem again.
Give that a try, no need to hard reset.

I had to do 2 hard resets due to this tweak. Good thing i just got my phone and didn't lose anything but some some playing around with it.
My problem was a bit different though. It would start up but things won't load properly and seems the screen is not aligned(clicking on shorcuts don't do anything).
Anywhow, it seems this problem is affecting a lot of people, espcially ones with stock roms. I'd just stay away from this tweak for now.

Not much you can do except hard reset and not use that registry "tweak" next time. I too have run into this, and I cook my own roms... so yeah, some how this is not compatible with the newer rom bases.
Okay.. Thanks mate, how do i do this Hard reset? I think i have tried the most?? Can you please guide me?

Hi guys,
my HD2 remains blocked after HTC word at starting. I did 2 consecutive hard resets (using Vol UP/Down and Power buttons) but the problem remains. Still doesn't start.
Can any one help me on how to make it starting?
Thanks a lot.
boot without external card
try resetting your HD2 without your micro sd card in the slot.
I had this problem before, if you boot your device without an SD card, you might get some errors, but your phone will start.
Then undo the registry tweak and reboot again with micro sd card in slot..
Let me know if it worked

Thank you p50kombi for your help. I've already tried restarting without the m-SD card but it remained unsuccesful. I finally entered the bootloader USB menu and was able to flash my ROM. The problem was probably my Radio which was not compatible with the ROM (i aimed at testing different radio versions - now i know from which Radio version Leo 3.14 is compatible).
Many thanks to you.

MAybe a clue to what ROM/RADIO/SPL/ newly added software or tweaking was on the phone.
It seems that a lot of people have the same problem. And i was thinking that i was the only one... I had the same problem. After a hard reset started again but the problem comes back every time i try to add an application like Cookie Home tab or spb programs or what ever...
The strange thing is that i used Cookie home and a lot of programs since 7 months ago without a problem and i didn't do anything when the problem started.
I used to have HTC Touch 3g for 3 years and never had problems like this and i thought that is a good idea my new phone be another htc....Wrong decision..

HD2 frozen on boot

I have just got the HD2 and been using it for a few weeks. Downloaded a few apps (eg HTC rom, BSB tweeks) and all is good. Saw Max Manila and looked like a great idea - checked my manila version 2.5.19211619.0 and downloaded 2.7 SE (checked it's right for my manila) loaded onto phone and it crashed after soft reset. Took battery out and phone doesn't go past first screen (with the red writing bottom left) - Hard reset is the same and now I'm worried!
Any ideas???
sad to say yy sounds like hard reset time.
power off, hold volume up and volume down, tap power keeping volume up and down pressed til the screen comes on and follow the prompts.
it will reset your phone to factory defaults.
never used max manila so I cant help with what the problem might be, but if there is a developers thread for it you might be better asking there.
Thanks for replying samsamuel - I've tried the hard reset and it doesn't work!
Even when I do as you say, I get the white start screen with htc written on it and then several red lines at the bottom right starting R G and D and that's it! It just stay's like that - At this moment I'd pray for a hard reset!!
I'm going to try booting from the sd card but I'm not sure I can get the phone to go into the bootable mode. I've downloaded the HTC rom and extracted the nmh so we'll see.
if your phone is provider locked then that will not work.you need the rom that came on your phone. so if was from uk o2 then you need the o2 uk rom, otherwise it wont work.
No luck! Whilst I've got everything to sort the phone out it won't do anything but load the white first screen no matter which buttons I hold down.
Man this sucks!
Guess there's nothing for it except the bin unless anyone else has any other ideas??
can you get into boot loader?
press and hold vol down(not up this time, just down) tap and release power, keep vol down held. should boot to striped cultures colored screen.
if you can what does it say next to SPL?
Hi Samsamual
Thanks for helping but no, won't go into bootloader either - doesn't respond to any input (even when I conect the usb the charge led doesn't come on!) and just starts with the white screen with the HTC logo and then the red writting appears and it just hangs - left it for 5 mins just to be sure and no change
Looks like I've really messed it up although I have no idea what I did wrong - instal went just like the other things I installed.
Ahh shame. All i can suggest is the original rom sd card method. But it MUST be the propper rom that came on your phone, so if you got it from vodaphone, , , even if it is unlocked, you must use the voda rom.
Also, have a really good read through the pages in teh rom development section. If you can find someone with the exact same issue, you could be one step closer to fixing it.

WB
Have you tried a boot (all combinations!) without the sd card installed?
Hoss and WB - thanks for the comments
Hoss, I've held the volume buttons for over a minute after powering on - no change
WB, I can't get the phone to go into boot loader screen but thanks for the info for the future. Next time I'll see if I can copy the original rom just in case.
Resigned myself to having a new paper weight on my desk and looking for a new phone - Guess I won't be putting so many programs on my new one....
PA - Thanks for the advice - Yes tried with sd card in/out sim in/out bootloader, hard reset, soft reset and always the same.
In your posts you do not mention where you bought your HD2, and I do not know what country you are in.
From what I have read, it seems that you did not flash any ROMs, nor change your SPL, so if I were you, at this point, rather than accepting a bricked paperweight, why not explore your warranty possibilities?
Contact the place you bought the HD2 (the dealer) and explore your options. Since I do not know which country you are in I will not suggest an HTC service center, but if your country has such a center, at last resort, you might check out that possibility.
Since you apparently had no hardware problems before the manila incident, it would seem that it is a software glitch somehwere.
Good luck with all of this. It must be almost heartbreaking to have this happen with such beautiful hardware.

What's most annoying is it wasn't as if I was doing anything crazy! Max manila is used by many people (from what I've seen in the threads) and I guess I downloaded the wrong one (although naturally I checked and it's the right one). Certainly will curb my using of 3rd party software! As for the warranty, you're right, I can try and see if it can be fixed (bizarrely, that hadn't occured to me - I thought that with no resets working HTC couldn't do anything). Thanks for the tip and I'll let you know how I get on.
Surely your warranty will cover this. Yes, let me (and us) know how all of this goes. You will get your phone back to what you deserve, for sure!
I had the same issue.
Sent mine to HTC and got it back with the comment "Cannot reproduce"
Probably it solved itself when the battery was removed for a couple of days in the mail.
It has now been working for two weeks again.
Fingers crossed.

Experential nut I may be, but just wondering if you had the problem after you installed the MAx manila? I wonder now what versions of OS may be causing this problem.
i had something like this with my HTC Diamond... It stopped responding completely when turned on, didn't respond to the usb cable being plugged in (the round ring used to illuminate when charging)
I took the battery out, for about 30 minutes... then left it charging for another 30 minutes - booted up straight away and never did anything like that again
Worth a shot just leaving it without power for awhile, and then just recharging it
Like watnuweer mentioned, "cannot reproduce" probably fixed itself by not having the battery left in for awhile

This is getting more interesting, what do you suppose is the cure of taking out the battery, and then charging? I do not doubt your experience, I am just extremely curious if anyone can explain this phenomena.

Very strange screen freezing

Hi,
Since a few days my screen is freezing very often, almost 10 times a day. It is only the screen that is frozen, not the hardware buttons. To unfreeze it, I have to push the power button a few times very fast .....till the next time it will freeze again.
I don't understand what happened because I haven't add or removed a program since a few weeks. I have done a hard reset and I have updated my rom but after having installed all my programs, this behaviour came back.
I am afraid that it could be a hardware problem.
Any idea what to do ?
Thanks

HD2 Screen Problems
I have the EXACT SAME problem....
I solved mine by slamming the screen face down into a table; although I wouldn't suggest this as I have damaged part of my lcd screen. But the Touch Screen works 24/7 now.
It seems to be a common problem with HD2

SEND it in to HTC if you have warranty.. if you don't. Then S.O.L.

Try pressing the "off" button to put the phone to "sleep",
then push the "off" button again to "wake" the phone,
can you use the touch now? try multiple times to conclude.
Next try waking the phone by either one of the other buttons,
can you use touch now? try multiple times to conclude.
On my HD 2 it is the off button that doesnt wake the phone properly so the lcd wakes but not the touch screen..
I dont yet now if this is a soft or hardware issue related to the "Off" button.. but many folks have the issue now a days

Yes, it was what I am doing. I don't think it has something to do with the "off button" because it happens also when my phone is already on , and sometimes

Hi everybody.
I solved my freezing just installing memMaid with default settings and scheduling a run in the night time. Moreover I scheduled a soft reset after that, not with memMaid because I didn't find such an option but with a little exe I found somewhere here called schedulereset.exe.
I hope this can help someone.

Eeey there,
I understand you have issue's with a freezing screen on your HD2. Pherhaps something may is wrong with the Drivers or the ROM. Or may there is a application running in the background that isn't stable and causes the screen to freeze.
Could you may post some specifications about the ROM you are running on your phone, wich radio you use etc.

It should be a hardware problem.

I think it is some kind of hardware problem, as I have the same screen freezing problem. For the last two days, my HD2 wouldn't respond to my touch at all. I reflashed my custom ROM, which was no help. Then flash to the newly updated ROM from Tmobile, but my HD2 still wouldn't respond. So I think the problem with unresponsive screen and freeze are somehow hardware related.
right, it seems to be a hardware issue
but i think try to use stock rom with the stock radio wont let you down hopefully
I have the same, but it seems to be the extended battery that caus it, so it maybe is a voltage prob.

Stuck in Splash Screen

My frigin HD2 keeps freezing on me on the splash screen. How do I fix this? I'm running windows 6.5 and I can't seem to get past the splash screen. It's mocking me. Someone please help before I smash this thing.
flashed anything recently? do you get RGD info, small red txt, bottom left on splashscreen?
This is my fathers phone and I haven't flashed anything for him since I flashed the energy rom stable version. I get to the small red text and then it freezes and nothing happens.

Thank you for the advice. I've tried this and I still get stuck with the opening splash screen. Anyone else?
Try booting the HD2 without te sim card or the SD card in, bit do it ome at a time so you can see of the sim card of SD card might be giving you a problem.
If no joy with that option, then put the HD2 in a sealable plastic bag and then in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes then try to bootx it. If it boots then the device is more than likely experiencing hardware problems. So if the HD2 is still umder warranty flash the stock ROM and SPL back to the HD2 and send it in for repair or ecxhange.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, it seemed to be a hardware problem. I sent it back to HTC and they repaired it for a small fee. Now I seem to be having problem with it reading sim cards so I'm not really too sure whats going on with that.

kutos for not starting a new thread! (btw what you describe for your android is called nand.)
my suggestion: start over. flash back to WM, then reinstall android on nand. takes ~15 minutes and will give you a clean start. otherwise, who knows what happened. or at the mininum, reflash your rom. or flash a new rom. but i like the WM option as you can see if is hardware or software as the culprit.
however, reboots can also be to bent battery pins.

Tried and checked that battery pins too! But actually it was the hard reset that baffles me. It takes like a second only, and it restarts. But when it do restarts it is like i did not do a hard reset. I like the advise you gave me, but the problem is i only had this phone for a little than 2 weeks. I cant even flash this coz it is stuck on bootscreen, I cant follow even tutorials on you tube coz it doesn't show that it was messed up like mine before they started flashing it. It's like a "Where do i begin Love Story song lol!!
I tried to contact the person who sold me this phone at ebay but he wont respond.
So what choices do i have here, i dont know how to flash with the current situation of my phone. Am even thinking of mailing this to anyone and giving me a dual boot then and just freakin pay and spend more over this phone. I dont have a choice.....
Any more suggestions here would be greatly appreciated.
hard reset ,nothin changed
i think we are talking about a couple of different things here (maybe).
when i say hard reset i mean - boot into bootloader (3 colored screen) - reboot holding volume key down - and via usb or sdcard flash back to windows mobile. have you done that? can you get to bootloader?
sucks you're having issues...
Yeah i can go to the 3 colored screen. That is actually the first i see before the "white screen"... can you teach me how to do that kind of hard reset??
I dont have WinMo anymore... the guy that sold me this phone put Android as the main OS.

But actually it was the hard reset that baffles me. It takes like a second only, and it restarts. But when it do restarts it is like i did not do a hard reset.

doing a hard reset when magldr/android is installed is pointless, because it doesnt reset anything, (or i think ive seen it said that it hard resets magldr, the effect is the same, , , nothing happens) which is why it only took a few seconds.

yep yep. tis what i meant.
@ the op, since you didn't put the rom on your phone, i would flash back to stock (aka back to windows mobile) and get rid of android. then put back android. see what happens.
read this thread, #5 to be exact to get back to windows mobile:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893948
this will get rid of android, save your hspl which will make putting android back on easy. however, if the problem exists in wm, is out of my knowledge, and is not seemingly software and more likely hardware. but if samsamuel thinks different, he knows a ton, and has helped me out of many a pickle. cheers.
K bro. Thanks!! +1 thanks for you!!!!
@samsamuel am talking about the white screen wherein you will hard reset ( holding volume up/down and red key). Oh well. I just talked to the person whom i bought the phone he will just put back original rom and i might just have a dual boot. Hope this will be much better. Thanks guys!!
Learn from our mistakes.... this will be sticky for me!!!
guess samsamuel is the man!!!
well glad you will have a solution. but just so you know - dual boot means one of two things - WM on your phone and android on the SD card or WindowsPhone7 on your phone and android on your SD card. No "real" dual boot per se.
honestly, i would try to look at putting on your preferred rom. good luck!
You mean dual boot isn't good? Is that more of a disadvantage rather than an advantage. Or will a noob like me [email protected]##ed this phone again and will be in more trouble?
Not saying good or bad. Rather dual boot means android is on your SD card. Very easy to get this going. Wont hurt your system. Just being informative.
I prefer nand android but that is my preference. If you will never use windows mobile and only android I would forget dual....but is all about preference. Cheers.

HD2 Serious freeze HELP!

I think here might be something wrong with the htc sense, but the thing is, that my hd2 touchscreen wont respond to my touch. When i'm at the unlock screen, i cant slide it to open up. This wont change after reboot either.
So eventually i set a hard-reset on the phone, but it didn't work after that either. I tried three times, no respond. Without the sim and with it in.
I cant recive calls or text messages, because i cant tap my PIN in, neither i could open or answer. I'm f***ed.
Okay, the next day i do my fourth hard-reset, and it starts working again, but after a time of use, it will start getting slow with the touch again, and then it will stop responding again. So I don't now what to do. There is now warranty time left, so i want to see what i can do my self before taking it to a repairing place and pay 100 € for it.
This is my everyday phone, and i would like to get it back to normal state as soon as possible, so many many many thanks to all who try to help me out of this
Cheers,
Nother

Have you flashed HSPL on it or this is all stock ROM?
honestly it looks like a hardware issue to me.
well i looked at the stats, and seems like i have HSPL on it, but it's not bought from a reseller, it was bought second-hand. it has worked perfectly until a few days ago, then the freezing started.

ok if it has HSPL on there that means someone flashed something on there.
I would flash task29, then flash the ROM of your choice and see if it still does it.
If the ROM is the problem a hard-reset won't fix it, so let's try this and see what happens.
Okay thanks for the help
the only problem is that i'm running on a mac, and i cant find any software to flash the hd2 on a mac..? Do you now any?
and could you link me a thread or a tutorial to how to flash 'cause i'm quite new with this anyway.
Thanks!

There is no way to do this on a mac, find a PC.
ok, here's the quick version.
1) download the attached file from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5848003&postcount=19
2) turn your phone off, then turn it back on while holding the vol-down arrow, this will bring you to a tri color screen. Make sure you are plugged in via USB.
(you could do this via activesync, but I want to avoid the freeze so this gets you right into bootloader)
3) unzip the file and run it, follow the on-screen instructions, it will flash task 29, which is basically a good reformat.
4) if you are fast, hold the vol down arrow when it reaches 100% and don't let go till you're back at the tri-color screen. If it goes to the splash screen it will stay there forever (because there is nothing flashed on your phone now). You have to do a battery pull or press the reset button. In this case hold the vol-down arrow again and power on the device to get you into the tri-color screen again.
5) Download the ROM of your choice from this forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=534
They are all custom ROMs, my favorite is the this one currently:
http://hotfile.com/dl/117879873/9b01b43/Energy.Leo.29020.Sense2.5.Cookie.2.0.sencity.May.14.7z.html
It was taken from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591784
and is the awesome one with big finger friendly buttons as well as that awesome blackish theme (Sencity)
If you don't want a custom ROM then go to the HTC support site and find your stock ROM, download and flash that via SD card (I am assuming you have an international HD2 and not a TMOUS one).
If for some reason you have a TMOUS one DO NOT GO THRU HTC BUT USE TMOBILE'S SUPPORT SITE.
Let's get you rocking and rolling!
Thank you very much for your help, i'm very grateful
I'm going to run W7 virtually, just to be quick.
And I was thinking to flash straight to Android, is that possible? Like android 2.3 or something.
Cheers!
sorry if I made you unhappy, but my phone is now in a technic service due to same problem, it never fixed with a rom update, day by day your problem will appear more frequently, this is a hardware issue, maybe digitizer maybe hardware buttons block your touch screen.. I will see what will happen after my phone come to my hands again..
Okay thanks.
I will see what the reflashing will do. Then if it doesn't work, i will take it to repairing.
Thanks!
