I have seen a few people saying that darchs roms have virtually no keyboard lag compared to the sprint builds. Has anyone come up with a good solution or app alternative in the sprint 2.1 roms to reduce keyboard lag. I love the new roms but the lag is slowly eating away at me. I must have gotten spoiled.
Yes, I agree. Perhaps it has something to do with the voice input? The keyboard was soooo smooth on DC1.

can anyone confirm that the older keyboard is faster? I'll flash that ****er in a heartbeat if it is. I might try swipe too, I see that swipe light link up, looking pretty tempting.
The new XDA-modified keyboard definitely has more lag than the stock HTC keyboard.

Actually no. Both keyboards gave me ridiculous lag in the new 2.1's. However, ever since I applied a new Rosie theme through MetaMorph, believe it or not, I have little to no keyboard lag now.
Well I did notice that the new keyboard lagged very bad, so i ended up going back to the stock keyboard. It still has some lag, but it is noticeably faster than the new one.
Turn off any kind of feedback (vibration and sound) if you have not done so already.
with all types of feedback off, I still lag on the new keyboard. I did slightly on the old one, but this is noticeable.
I agree, the new, updated keyboard is significantly laggier. And smiley's and the voice to text button (which isn't even very accurate). I would obviously be ideal is someone could come up with a solution to make the new one less laggy.
In the mean time, does anyone have a good tutorial for switching back to the old keyboard?
Give me a minute or so and I'll have a batch script that'll get the new one back for you... You DO have the old keyboard, right? Or do you need that too?
Batch script to reinstall old keyboard
Hey. Here is the batch script as promised. Make sure you put the script, as well as the old HTC_IME.apk in the SAME DIRECTORY that ADB is located. If you need the old HTC_IME.apk, you can google for it or find a ROM, extract it, then go to /system/app and copy it out.
Hmm, now that it was mentioned, 1.0 did have almost no lag with the keyboard. I am back running 1.5 right now. Waiting for OEM 2.1.
i agree. this keyboard lag is pissing me off. i can't take it.
if there a way to allocate some resources to the keyboard. i don't use the vibration but i do use the sound. it makes me know that i pressed something and makes my feel more secure when i am pressing another button so the sound is a must for me.
Flipz put a zip on the first page of his fresh Rom. I flashed it a little while ago. It's a little bit faster, not a ton though. I'm sure someone will have it running quick soon enough.
can you explain this keyboard a bit more???
i would like to try it out if possible. i like the smileys but i only used it twice and i like the voice command but i only used to to show it off.
I use shapewriter, and it's just as quick as it was on any other rom, even stock. and I can type (well, shape) much faster
Hi guys
Yes.. there is a bad lag...
I found a small fix
there is a "pop up" setting in keyboard setting
it is set to 750...change it to a lower setting. I have mine on 300.
Also change the vibrate length to 15 and enable it..
This helped my lag... but itis not gone!

i can confirm. this def took away alot of the lag thank you
I have the Sprint Hero, and used the stock rom for 5 months,
DC 2.05
DC 2.07
and currently fresh rom 2.0, The keyboard lag is rediculous on this thing, and one of the worst keyboards I have ever used. The lag makes it unusable..
I have installed the 2.1 HTC IME keyboard, the 1.5 stock HTC KB, and the same one on the droid eris. Nothing helps.
The droid eris' keyboard works perfectly for some reason and for the hero, it sucks. It seems everyone will comment saying
"Mine doesn't lag"
If someone cannot come up with a possible fix, can someone please explain why their is lag on the HTC KB.
you might consider using xdas
lotsa options :-D
not sure if its more lightweight and less lag, and i hate to say it but...mine doesnt lag and i have no explanation
try regawmods rom. he has a black keyboard, its pimp. i found that while i dont experience LAG per-say, when compared to his, his was much more RESPONSIVE.
I'll join in. Mine has lag and I couldn't figure it out. I just installed Fresh 2.0d today to see if it's different. So far... no.
I agree with you, mine did lag. I'm using Sushi rom and the black htc keyboard is very responsive. Also, the AOSP keyboard never lagged one bit. I love it.
I'm running Fresh 2.0d. I'm also using Better Keyboard from the market...and I have no lag. The only time I will notice lag is if the phone is recieving a call while I'm texting, or if an app is installing after download. Aside from that...I'm not noticing a lag.
I also keep my phone as clean as possible. I clear text messages once a week, often clear my call log, ect.
Its mostly the messaging app i've discovered. Try pushing this to your phone. It will give you the stock android 2.1 messaging app which I love, and it is much faster
I started using the beta from swift key and it works nice.
i have to agree. the keyboard lag pisses me off. i can't take it. turning off vibration helps which i dont mind and turning off sound helps but i do mind that. i would really like sound on this.
The 2.1 IME keyboards and the XDA keyboard both lagged for me. Luckily I only have to deal with it long enough to install Estrong's file explorer so I can slap Swype back on. I don't have any lag in Swype.
You could try the non-haptic keyboard here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660506
For me it's not just text messages. It's everywhere on the phone. I will be in the web browser and typing in an address and i will take the e and it sits for a sec then a 3 shows up. Or, I will type and it will pop in the letter, but I can't hit another letter for another second or 2. 1.5 wasn't like this, but I can deal.
Does the better keyboard from the market have the voice to text option? I've been using that a lot lately.

I have the HTC Mms .apk that came with Fresh 2.0, but I am a noob, when it comes to the adb stuff, could you please or someone explain how to install the stock 2.1 Mms.apk , I will give it a shot and hope it works.
I hate to say this, but the one thing the iPhone has over this is the KB. I am not an apple fanboy, I prefer android. But the KB lag makes the phones only input method virtually unusable.
1.5 was like this also. everything i tried has a keyboard lag. better keyboard is ok but it lags also.
every keyboard lags for some reason.

the stock keyboard lags also. don't even bother but it is close to better keyboard in performance. i wish there was a way to boost protity on the keyboard apps.
is there an app for that???
exactly, and its not just texting, every text field its ridiculous.
i just tried disabling everything in better keyboard and it isn't helping.
i tried looking for an apps that would increase the cpu priority on apps (keyboard) but i couldn't find any...

I dont think increasing the priority will help, but download Auto Memory Manager from the market.. Go to running processes, long hold it, and increase the priority or just say never kill, gives it the highest.

I turned off Vibrate when typing and I don't lag one bit, prior to doing that I lagged a ton.

I have also experienced EXTREME lag in most of the 2.1 roms out right now. Esp. DC and Fresh. Turned off vibrations, turned off sound, installed every keyboard I could find including AOSP and it didn't help. The lag was all over the place too just like others reported - not just in text messages or email.
Then I found a fix...
A rom without Sense. So far it's the only thing that has worked for me (other than reverting back to a 1.5 rom - yuck). Ic3 and MatrixROM both have 0 lag and run beautifully for me. Haven't tried the newer Sense-less roms yet.
Hope this helps!
Hi all! I am new to for the forums and this is my first post. I just got a HTC EVO Shift a few days ago and coming from the moment I can't remember if the HTC Shift has auto correction for the hardware keyboard. I miss the "auto-replace" "auto-cap" and "auto-punctuate" from my moment.
So here is my question.
Does the HTC EVO Shift have "auto-replace" "auto-cap" and "auto-punctuate" correction. If it does, how do I turn it back on because I turned it off and can't find out how.
I'm playing around with my disconnected evo on wifi right now and don't have the shift next to me. If there are settings, it would be in keyboard touch input settings. I think I might have read something somewhere that the hardware keyboard doesn't have something enabled by default. If there isn't what you are looking for there, there are many free or good paid keyboards that can extend their correction features to a hardware keyboard. I know swiftkey does off the top of my head but that's paid. Gingerbread keyboard or gingerkeyboard, those are two similar ones, are good and might have what you are looking for. I'm on a quest for finding lightweight and fast keyboards lately so I don't quite remember which ones do and don't. My suggestion is to download appbrain and run a search on keyboard and maybe hardware. Look at what's available and try them out until you find one you like.
Be careful because I did notice a few paid ones that seemed good and had lot of features and settings, but were large in file size and some slowed down the phone. Try one at a time so you can determine if its creating a performance hit or not.
The settings for the hardware QWERTY are under Settings > Keyboard & Language > Touch Input.
The thing I've noticed is that the spelling and prediction aren't always there when using the hardware keyboard. It's like a 70-30 chance for.
I find it rarely changes anything in the messaging app, but google talk it almost always does.

I just looked and swiftkey doesn't have any hardware settings but it might automatically work. Ultra keyboard does have hardware section in settings. Another neat thing about ultra is you can swype with it too, look in settings. It also has navigation arrows. This isn't the information you're looking for, sorry.
There are some keyboards that are more aggressive than others when it comes to auto correction and insert.
I didn't find that the hardware keyboard corrected anything in the stock HTC messaging and email apps, but now I use K9 for email and Handcent for messaging, both of which autocorrect with the hardware keyboard
HTC ime mod kb has hardware correction in it and is fast. I'm using it now. I followed the link to the kitchen and made myself a black one and I'm happy now. The link is in general or theme app.
So I searched and couldn't find a direct answer basically here it goes,
I'm using CM7 and the gingerbread keyboard that comes stock. This has been happening since alpha and it slows down my texting. I'm a big texter, and I send about 25-35 thousand texts a month. So I need this to be fixed!
What happens, is that when I'm normally texting sometimes letters will automatically type themselves twice. Such as if I'm texting the word "always" it will usually come out as "aalways" and it looks dumb. I love the gingerbread keyboard but I might have to result in using another keyboard if this continues!(Does this drain battery life?) I don't want to use swype.
If there's a fix let me know! And I checked for a calibration setting and couldn't find one :/
Also happens to me. I just go back and fix it. It's not a HUGE problem, but it's there.
Happens to me also. I Googled it to make sure I'm not the only one. I was starting to think I had the beginning signs of Parkinsons. It's good to know I'm not the only one.
I've also noticed that there are times when the auto-suggest does not work. If you stop typing for a few seconds it comes back. And I've also had a problem with the keyboard not responding as fast I am typing and I have to slow down so it can keep up.
Did you try downloading a different keyboard from the market?
Yeah I'm actually using a downloaded gingerbread keyboard from the market. It just happens often enough to slow down my texting.

Yes, this is a frustrating reoccurring issue. Sometimes it'll even give you double letters of two of the first letters in a word, for example, "like ththis." It's especially ridiculous when it happens to only two letter words, like "to" for example, which results in "I'm going toto the movies."
I've filed a report with Google, so please visit the link and star and add your own testimony if you wish. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=14755
I even made a video demonstrating the problem to show Google. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUZdvr6Pdjk
Smart Keyboard Pro was my solution. Got tired of always getting "toto" when I type "to." And I also always get the doubt first letter on the word.
I'm on an epic 4g and I have this problem also. If you turn on the language packs when you push space bar and a quickly it wont register the "a". This problem doesn't occur nearly as often when typing with the language packs off. Just another thing to add to the complaint ;-)
3.1 didn't help resolve the annoying typing delay on this pad. I played with a Xoom and the small Samsung and it didn't have this problem.
Have there been any patches or fixes released? I was really hoping 3.1 would do it, but it didn't.
I also would love to get this. It's literally the ONLY issue I have with this device.
Didn't someone say turning off some option will help or switch to generic keyboard? I'm not really sure what the issue is, I don't think I've had it.
I noticed this problem pretty quickly and was very bothered by it. I tried out a couple different browsers and found that Opera was the only one with good keyboard responsiveness. While it may not be the best browser in other respects, it trumps all other browsers for this reason.
Now I wish there were an easy option to turn off tap-to-click. Damn thing throws me off everytime I type.
is this with the dock or the onscreen keyboard as well?

Yea, me too. It's pushing me to reconsider the Samsung 10.1.
I've only experienced typing lag on vBulletin based forums sites with the stock browser - and for example here on XDA if you choose the classic skin things improve quite a bit.
Its been mentioned many times before, that the "lag" isn't a "Transformer issue" per-se but a stock browser problem on certain sites. I've tried XDA with Firefox and Dolphin Mini and the there's no real lag that i can see, which further points to the stock browser..
Or are you guys experiencing lag on any web page with the stock browser?? (in which case I'll get my coat)
Try switching to the Honeycomb keyboard instead of the Asus keyboard.

Yes. The amount of lag may vary slightly between sites but it is still there and annoying. Dolphin made no difference for me. I've tested both the Xoom, Samsung and Acer in stores and they don't seem to have the problem.
The best test for A/B comparing purposes is to just type the numbers 1 thru 9 quickly and see what's left when you are done. For me when I'm done "7" is usually on the screen.
Try this temp fix
1. go to google.com
2. select settings in the upper right and click on search settings
3. disable google instant
This seems much better for me. Others may vary.

I've figured it out. It's a text box issue. Go into XDA forum settings. Change the text box to "simple "and skin to classic and enjoy lag free typing on this forum.
I'm pretty sure ASUS will post an update for this typing lag... althought typing lag has improved only slightly by changing user agent to Tablet (or to Android on dolphin browser)... will just have to be patient on the update

I hate the responsiveness of the Asus keyboard, but the stock keyboard does a nice job. I wish the layout was better, but I will take the responsiveness of the stock keyboard over the layout of the Asus one with crappy responsiveness.

Both keyboards are the same for me. I just came back from the mall where I tested a Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab , T-Mobile G-Slate and iPad and none of them had any delay anywhere. I simply go to the forum, log in and type 123456789 in an empty reply to a message and see what's left when I am finished typing. The only problematic one seems to be the Asus.
U know what , out of the typing delay frustration i went on to try my most trusted browser for my froyo phone, miren and walla no lag in typing. But since miren is not build for honeycomb there are some fc here n there as expected. But the feature i love most, the smart full screen still works in honeycomb yay !!!
Part from that, it also doesnt have the image tearing issue when u scroll the browser quickly most probably related to hardware acceleration that is implemented on honeycomb browser.
Conclusion, the typing lag is definitely caused by the browser itself or even the webkit itself :-(
Too bad miren's developement stopped :-(
I think there's more than one "typing delay" issue here.
The one that I'm having 1) does not depend on which keyboard is used, and 2) is just as bad on Xoom. Just go to http://slashdot.org, open any story, and try to post a comment there - and watch characters you type being entered at like 1 per second...
I am typing this on the dolphin browser HD which has just been updated today. I am using Smart keyboard pro and cannot notice any lag. This reply is on the XDA 2010 theme.

Hmmm, seems I can't download anything from the Market ... get the same error with Dolphin.
