[Q] HTC EVO Shift Auto Correction? - EVO Shift 4G General

Hi all! I am new to for the forums and this is my first post. I just got a HTC EVO Shift a few days ago and coming from the moment I can't remember if the HTC Shift has auto correction for the hardware keyboard. I miss the "auto-replace" "auto-cap" and "auto-punctuate" from my moment.
So here is my question.
Does the HTC EVO Shift have "auto-replace" "auto-cap" and "auto-punctuate" correction. If it does, how do I turn it back on because I turned it off and can't find out how.

I'm playing around with my disconnected evo on wifi right now and don't have the shift next to me. If there are settings, it would be in keyboard touch input settings. I think I might have read something somewhere that the hardware keyboard doesn't have something enabled by default. If there isn't what you are looking for there, there are many free or good paid keyboards that can extend their correction features to a hardware keyboard. I know swiftkey does off the top of my head but that's paid. Gingerbread keyboard or gingerkeyboard, those are two similar ones, are good and might have what you are looking for. I'm on a quest for finding lightweight and fast keyboards lately so I don't quite remember which ones do and don't. My suggestion is to download appbrain and run a search on keyboard and maybe hardware. Look at what's available and try them out until you find one you like.
Be careful because I did notice a few paid ones that seemed good and had lot of features and settings, but were large in file size and some slowed down the phone. Try one at a time so you can determine if its creating a performance hit or not.

The settings for the hardware QWERTY are under Settings > Keyboard & Language > Touch Input.
The thing I've noticed is that the spelling and prediction aren't always there when using the hardware keyboard. It's like a 70-30 chance for.

I find it rarely changes anything in the messaging app, but google talk it almost always does.

I just looked and swiftkey doesn't have any hardware settings but it might automatically work. Ultra keyboard does have hardware section in settings. Another neat thing about ultra is you can swype with it too, look in settings. It also has navigation arrows. This isn't the information you're looking for, sorry.
There are some keyboards that are more aggressive than others when it comes to auto correction and insert.

I didn't find that the hardware keyboard corrected anything in the stock HTC messaging and email apps, but now I use K9 for email and Handcent for messaging, both of which autocorrect with the hardware keyboard

HTC ime mod kb has hardware correction in it and is fast. I'm using it now. I followed the link to the kitchen and made myself a black one and I'm happy now. The link is in general or theme app.

Swype adding a space every 2 words

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong location, but my Swype no longer auto spaces correctly. Rather than adding a space every word, it has started to add a space every 2 words. I now have to hit the space bar after every word I type. I have reinstalled Swype and it still has not fixed the problem. I have done a search on XDA and the net and still cant find a solution. Any thoughts from you guys?
I have the same problem. It's what made me stop using it. The only way mine would fix (and I know this sounds weird) is to delete all my messages. I moved on and now I'm using Resco Keyboard. Much better than the stock kb.
Yeah I ended up doing a hard reset because I was having so many problems with the phone. Now everything is back to normal. I might check out Resco Keyboard.
Why don't you switch to the latest version of Swype? It's great!
v3.19.20.20.6343
There is a small issue with Auto Spacing not working with HTC Messaging and Twitter. That can easily be fixed here.
Believe me, there is no on-screen keyboard that holds it's own in a contest with Swype. This thing is what got me off Hardware Keyboards.
swype never works for me!!! haha

Keyboard question

Hi! I just had a quick question about the keyboard on the 1.2 devices. My wife has been asking me to find her a better keyboard for her MyTouch, saying that her current one sucks and she wants one that doesn't suck (I don't know what that means either).
So, what is the best keyboard for the 1.2 still on android 1.6?
probably "better keyboard"
Smart Keyboard Pro
I like it but it is very similar to the stock one. What complaints does she have about the stock keyboard?
My personal favorite keyboard would have to be swype. Coming in at second would be the HTC keyboard
I love the stock keyboard, second would be the HTC keyboard (attached.)
I downloaded and installed Better Keyboard. But it's doing weird auto corrections like when she types "no" and then hits space, it inserts the word "nothing" or "yes" inserts "yesterday". I turned off the auto correction and that "fixed" the problem, but then there is no auto corrections...
I'll install the HTC keyboard and see what she thinks.
Her complaint is that when she types really fast, some of the letters don't register (probably because of the no multi touch?)
Swype might be a good option. I'll try that
Thank you for the comments

[Q] How can you change the keyboard?

On fascinate, the default android keyboard does not have the option to un-check. So, even if I installed other keyboards, only the default keyboard is on. Is there any way to disable the stock keyboard and use other keyboard that I want to use?
Thanks!
jus ordered my fascinate so still wait on mine but as far as I know you cant disabled but to switch it should be the same across the board on androids just tap ur text box then long press in the text box and it should pop up with ur options

In some cases, when you install a new keyboard manually (such as one of my favorites HTC_IME http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416), you have to go to Settings > Language & Keyboard and enable the checkbox next to the keyboard you installed.
After that, the instructions ksizzle listed above still apply.
Thanks!!! I do not have the phone with me right now, but I will try that!!
Coming from an HTC device, which has a keyboard that worked quite nicely, I was utterly disgusted by the horrible keyboard on this phone. Reading around a bit, I decided that Better Keyboard was the way to go, so I decided to shell out the $2.99 for it, and also downloaded a couple of the free themes. I now have a very good looking keyboard, which works 10 times better than the stock one.

It's called SilverBlue AndroidandMe. It's gray/silver keys over a medium blue background. It seems to fit well with the gray/blue theme that Samsung has implemented on this phone.
this is my first touch screen so what makes the htc and better keyboard better than the stock one?

The HTC_IME keyboard link I posted is pretty much the HTC keyboard with a ton of customizable options. And its a free download.

Ah darn, guess I should have hunted a little more. Oh well, I'm happy with better keyboard, and you can apply themes to it, for added value. For the record, I think it works even better than the HTC keyboard, but I'd have to actually try it on this phone to make a fair comparison. All I know is that I can type way faster on this one than I've ever been able to on a touchscreen phone before.

Auto-correct in stock email client w/alternative kbd

Has anyone figured out a way to fix the stock email client so that it auto-corrects with anything other than the stock keyboard? I'm tired of stock due to the small space key but Better Keyboard and Smart Keyboard auto-correct don't work with the email client (they do of course in other apps - eg Whatsapp).
Since there are 0 replies I'll add
From what I understand about keyboard they are quite independent to the app. The keyboard has 2 parts, the keys + layout and the line where it puts in suggestions and words etc.
They are only bound to apps in a kinda fire and forget way, from my limited knowledge I would think it's actually hard to disallow suggestions from the keyboard within an app, since they are quite separate. Speculation only though.
I like the stock gingerbread rom which works absolutely fine except in email (except hepatic feedback)
Strange. Stock samsung keyboard isn't my friend so would love this to work!

I'm sure someone could either hack the Samsung keyboard to fix the space key or get the alternative keyboards (eg Multi-Lingual GB KB) to work in Sammy's email?!? I really don't want to go back to Touchdown since I like the stock client!
Hi I only use gmail so not sure if other email app is the same (I ripped it off my phone)
But I use perfect keyboard and that works fine in gmail

Any ideas about fixing this one? This is the one issue that is annoying me about the phone. I use Smart Keyboard Pro but it won't auto-correct in the email client (despite working everywhere else).
I can confirm it. I use Smart Keyboard and Auto Caps function works only in the subject of the new email but not in the message body. Original Samsung keyboard works fine, so it seems to me, that it is problem of alternative keyboards. I hope developer of Smart Keyboard will fix it soon.
Bump. Still drives me a bit crazy. Has anyone tried to open a ticket with Samsung? It's clearly a bug with their Exchange client, which is different (much better!) than everyone else's ... but suffers this replacement KBD issue. The small space key is what really drives me nuts on the stock keyboard.

Yes, built-in E-Mail client is VERY VERY good - I am using it for multiple email accounts (Exchange + Gmail) and for this combination is much better than other clients from the Market.
I hope it will be fixed soon. Same as missed call count notification on the Phone icon - when I have some missed calls, there is no notification on icon ;(
Just wanted to bump this thread, as this issue is driving me nuts too. I think our only hope at this time would be for a custom rom to include a fix for the Samsung Email .apk.
Issue is fixed in the latest version of smart keyboard Prediction works as expected, just give it a try. I find smart keyboard from the market to be the best keyboard around anyway, it has many of the same features as the htc imei mod keyboard.

Just to let you know.
Auto capitalization on the email client is working now with "Perfect keyboard"
Thank Goodness - The Answer!
Thanks everyone I really appreciate this thread it was driving me mad! Now using perfect keyboard instead of the Gingerbread keyboard.
What I have noticed thpugh is that the insertion marker doesn't show in Perfect Keyboard. Any ideas?

[Q] Has anyone pushed swype on to the Transformer?

The swiping on the ASUS keyboard is absolute garbage compared to Swype. It might as well not even be there.
Trying to official beta doesn't work - get an error about unsupported screen size.
I haven't tried forcing the issue.

Too late for you now but the Amazon app store gave away flex9 keyboard which has swype functionality... in addition to voice dictation and handwriting.
swype feature is pretty good and works on the transformer.
I don't need a signature.
I have Swype and Dasur Slide it on mine and it is not a match made in heaven in the UK - as I have a conflict between the hardware keyboard and the software keyboard. It is very frustrating - as even though I have the software keyboards set to UK keyboards, this somehow alters the hardware keyboard to a US keyboard whne I re-dock. If anyone knows a way around this, I would be very grateful and the Asus trace keyboard is utter poo. I cannot use it. In fact I am not a big fan of Swype, I think Slide it is by far the best in its class.
I read a post here a few days ago showing how you could stop the dock keyboard being changed by the tab keyboard settings. Do search through the development forum. You need to move files around, etc.
I have Swype on mine but I don;t like it on the tab although it is great on my DesireHD. I use the Thumb keyboard which becomes natural very quickly.
EDIT
Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14600447#post14600447
Have the newest beta on mine as well, works great! What I tend to do is make use of the resizable keyboard, make ik smaller, position it on the right.
This way I can hold the tablet with my left hand, and swype with the right, without moving too much across the screen.
The fail in combination with the hardware keyboard is a shame, there is a solution, but you do need root, which I haven't got around to yet.

Cheers pal, it's fathers day and I am finally having a day to play with my new toy, so far the launcher has been changed and now it looks like I will be rooted by the end of the day. Didn't think it would last long unrooted.
What's wrong?

I don't understand. I have Swype set as my software keyboard and am using the dock to type this. While I do get the annoying warning about setting the Asus keyboard when I first get things going, I haven't noticed any odd functions, or loss of capability. Am I missing something?

I don't have any problems either.
I think I did change something with the settings when I previously installed thumb keyboard (the @ was coming up as " with the dock keyboard) but I haven't had to do anything with swype.
Edit....I've not got round to rooting yet so I'm completely stock and using the uk layout.

The swype for HC with re sizeable keyboard work great for tablet in landscape mode.
I use Swype on both my Android phones and love it. A perfect present for Fathers day was an email saying that Swype had released a new beta which included additional Honeycomb support!
Sign up and try it out here at beta.swype.com
After all, it's free! (at the moment)
