Sometimes when I go to wake the phone up the screen stays black, I can tell it's awake, the volume buttons make their up and down sounds, but the screen is completely off, all black and dark. I have to press the power button many time for it to finally come on. (using reset button doesn't seem to make much difference) Sometimes it still works as normal and comes on right away. Sometimes the screen does come on but the display is upside down and mirror image reversed, which is really weird! If I press the button on and off again then the display reverts to the correct orientation.
This is probably covered by warranty, I only got it a couple months ago, but I bought it from Expansys USA and I'm spending the summer in Europe. I'm dreading that it will take a long time to get a replacement, and I need this thing for GPS otherwise I can't really enjoy my bicycle excursions.
Any suggestions?
Did U flash a custom ROM?
mismatch of retaining old SPL (1.14) instead of 1.56 and flashing newer ROMs may also cause such problems..
I flashed a custom ROM back in March, it has worked perfectly until about a week ago. I just set it back to stock and upgraded to 1.56 but that hasn't helped at all.
Since my phone is legit (not through some nasty phone company) the UK repair center will take care of it so it shouldn't be too bad, but I'll miss it while it's gone :\
ive been having the same problem, try this:
go to setings - system - power - advanced
untick "turn off device if not used for"
seems to have worked for me
So I sent mine into the repair center in the Czech Republic, city of Tabor. It arrived in Tabor on June 1, but the address I was given was wrong, the repair center said it was an old address, I guess Ceska Posta hasn't heard of forwarding. Anyway because of that they didn't get it until June 12. I just got it back in the mail yesterday. The screen is brand new, and they also flashed the ROM back to 1.14 even though I had upgraded it, or who knows maybe they changed the mother board also.
I'm not having any of those screen issues now, though it's been less than 24 hours. I'll post back if any other problems occur but it seems pretty solid so far.

i am faced with the same issue too. hope someone is able to assist.
This sounds suspiciously like the DSOD problem that plagued the Sprint and Verizon 6700 Units. DSOD = Dark Screen of Death After much research the problem was found to be caused by the SD Card. More specifically having programs installed to the SD card, it seemed power managment was not properly implemented or something and often times when something was accessed on the SD card while the unit was in suspend it would exhibit the same symptoms you described.
There is a long forum post about it here.
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6700-xv6700/79197-regedit-i-have-made-make-6700-more-stable.html
my screen washes out white sometimes
Mine will turn the backlight off randomly when I start to enter a text message or an email... it turns back on after I press a button however.
DSOD? Yikes sounds terminal! As for the SD issue, the screen went dark after a hard reset / rom reflash with no sd or sim card in.
I'm going to send it back to HTC Europe, hopefully they'll swap it? Anyone had any experience with an RMA to these peeps?
Thanks
SOD and White Out Screen
Guys:
Let me share this with all. I got the white out screen of death on my TyTN about a month after I bought it. I would take the unit out of sleep, it would momentarily flash the good screen then fade to white, then black. I thought this was a software issue with something I had installed, so I re flashed the phone a couple of times and the problem persisted. This problem is an issue that needs repair, I'm afraid. I tried contacting HTC about this through their website and got no response. I guess they don't talk to peons like us. So, a week later, I contacted the place where I bought it in the USA, networkingrus.com, since it was still under warranty and they gladly issued an RMA...return merchandise authorization for repair. They said this was a common issue with many TyTNs and I was surprised at their high level of customer service with these guys in contrast with the ignoring I got from HTC directly. Once they received my phone here in the US, they forwarded it to the US agent/wholesaler who then sent it to HTC Europe in the UK for repair. The turn around time for my situation was about 6 weeks, but it was during the holidays, so figure normally it would take about 4 weeks before you get the phone back under normal conditions. They repaired it very well and it works flawlessly....however, they do flash the repaired phone with the oldest firmware HTC has, so you'll need to do a firmware upgrade for your area/country when you get the phone back from repair, as I did. That's my 2 cents on this issue. So, yes, it is a repair issue.
i have this problem when i open my keyboard and in the same time i play some file in media player. then when i want to write sms, document or something my screen blacks out when i stop typyng

Got the same issue, not resolved yet. It happens most of the time while I am typing on MSN over wifi. As MSN is yet quite buged he may be the culpit; I may try to investigate a little more this issue.
EDIT: In fact my screen does not turn completely black; it just loses the backlight.
I have kind of the same problem. A while after I've installed official WM6 only the backlight turned on when I woke the device from standby. And sometimes the hardware buttons stops working, when this happends the lights in the green and red call buttons are on, even when I set the telephone in standby. Sometimes when this happends the orange charging light also turns on, and I get a bright blue flash in the bluetooth light(much brighter than the actual bluetooth light).
I've tried to turn of the standby, now the device never get black screen(it seems that the black screen only happends when I wake the device from standby). But still the buttons locks up randomly during the day...
Now I've downgraded to official WM5. The telephone was ok for a while, but now it shows symptomes of the same problem.
Is this a hardware or software problem?
Anyone else have this problem?
Good afternoon,
Just wondering if anyone could give me a hand here. I have the Hermes in the guise of a MDA Vario II. On Thursday, I was using a Wi-Fi connection and the handset got really hot and since then the touch screen has been unresponsive. Since then I've noticed that one of the soft-keys looked as though they were stuck on (changed colour as though they were in being pressed), so I clicked the hard key underneath it which stopped the soft key from being as though it were pressed but that didn't fix the matter of the dead touchscreen.
I've also tried cooling the handset down and then trying to use it, but that doesn't fix the matter.
I've tried reflashing the ROM (Black 3.0.1) on the device, but I get stuck at the calibrating the touchscreen step as the touchscreen doesn't work. I can bypass the first tap screen command though, by pressing the power button to put the device into sleep mode and then pressing the power button again to get it out of sleep mode. This also happened when I flashed Black 2.5. The weird thing is that my phone will still ring even when stuck at the calibrating screen step but it won't show the caller; it just makes the ringing noise.
I've got to admit that I'm running out options fast. I don't want to open the device up unless it's unavoidable. I've alread had a look over some of the other issues with touchscreens but I can't find a resolution.
I think you are snookered here. Warranty fix may be problematic with all that flashing. You could open up (warranty voiding) to see if a connector has worked loose, but that is very much pot luck. Repair job at full cost - possibly very costly!! (and not guaranteed to be working when you get it back - often they replace the LCD screen that may in fact not be broken!)
Won't go into details of the screen issue - you'll have read them all anyway.
Mike
Thanks Mike,
I've got it back to the T-Mobile Hungary ROM now (but it still won't get past the screen calibration). I've been talking to T-Mobile to a seperate issue with the handset and they've said that they'll exchange it, so it looks like I could be sorted. My main concern is that they might query why it's got a Hungarian ROM on it; although I'm hoping that they'll see the splash screens and get stuck at the screen calibration so it won't be an issue.
Hi guys,
This evening something wring happened with my HD2. Suddenly without any visible reasons touch screen stopped working. Actualy screen itself is working but it doesn't react on any touches. I did hard reset - no luck, screen is working but touch surface isn't, so basically my phone is almost dead :-(
Have you seen this behaviour ? Is there any possible way to fix it ? The only thing that comes in my mind which could cause something like this is static electricity shock, but if it kills HD2 screen I want my money back.
I guess now I should use warranty and this is just after 1 month of usage....
Just a stupd question
Don't be offended by my question, I just want to rule out the obvious.
You're not wearing gloves due to the cold outside?
Greetings
chuelibrueder
No, I'm not using gloves with HD2 :-(
I have the same problem. I believe that the connectors under the screen became loose.
I have send an email to htc and they told me to contact the retailer to check if they can replace the device and if not to contact the service center in Cyprus.
There is another thread about this issue here
i`m sure that warranty will solve it.. just contact your retailer.. good luck
Hmmm,
Yet another one having to go back due to hardware problems....
WB
I loose the touch screen today and the hardware button exept Home i think, i had to remove the battery and i waited 30s put it back and everything went in place, the phone had called one contact when i had the bug.
The only thing that happened before screen doesn't work and buttons : i received an MMS strange, i'm not sure i can rely on my phone
I only installed the 1.48 rom and the 3 patches (audio, sms and sd card)

I contacted the service center in Cyprus and they offered to repair it but they don't have spare parts right now. I've also send an email to the retailer and wait for their answer.
Seems i have to wait after Christmas for a repair or exchange.
The good thing is that by pressing the screen with my palm or giving it a few solid taps it works for some time.
bBeware keyboard layout!
I had suffer bye used hadwritting layout sometime it cause screen doesn't responds
try change keyboard layout not hadwritting
Just had the same thing happen with mine, powers up but the screen wont respond anywhere i press. I have tried hard reset AND soft reset, nothing!
Have just restored factory ROM, and deleted hspdl and dropped off at vodaphone in town. Im gutted!!
really seems to be a production problem: i had to send my hd2 back to htc for screen replacement just 4 weeks ago... same fault as yours: the touchscreen wasn't responding to input anymore!
the last weeks i noticed that many people had this problem too...
wow.. keeping a close eye on this.. guess the same problem from the HD is creeping up to the HD2..
Well im hoping vodaphone dont turn around and say its not covered under warranty etc, I had to [like most ppl] sign up for two years to get this phone, i aint gonna be to happy if i have to spend the next 21 months of my contract without the handset i wanted!
Yikes , yesterday my screen didn't respond either (for the first time). Soft reset didn't work. After taking the battery out and leave it out for > minute it still didn't respond. I pressed the screen a little and then it worked again. Not sure if it was because of pressing the screen, but it did look that way. I hope this will be the last time this happens!
tnx!

Well, it's been a few weeks now and I've had this problem several times again and worse, even after a hard reset; and almost each time I could fix it by pressing the screen/hardware buttons, but that shouldn't be the way, because I don't think it's good for the hardware, so I searched the forum and I think I found the two culprits (maybe a combination of the two):
1. The problem occured exactly the same day I began using my 16 GB card, class 2. It once happened that when I had the locked screen problem I took out the card and it immediately unlocked. But every now and then the phone still froze, even when I took out the SD card if the problem occured.
2. Then I have put off the automatic light adjustment settings and guess what; no more freezes!
It looks like a combination of power settings and use of SD card. I'm not very technical, but even when it looked like it was a hardware fault at first, it now seems it's a software fault after all.
Touchscreen doesnt work
Well F4CK my screen will not respond to touch at all anymore seems that this is a problem that is not well addressed tmobile is sending out a new one but the question is when will the touchscreen stop working on that "new" one.NOT happy at all.
Well this has now happened to me....no touch response but hardware buttons working, screen still displays-- off to JB HIFI as soon as I can to replace.
OOOKK I had this problem when i just flashed my phone with a costum rom. As far i remember my phone fall down once or twice but not something bad. I have the silicone cover and screen protector. If it was a hardware problem i believe that it shouldn't work at all even if you had to use the hardbuttons. Which that was how i would have to use to unlock the screen. I will go back to the factory rom and settings to see if there is any difference. My current rom is AthineOS 3.14 and Radio 2.15.50.14.
If for any reason you want to access your cellphone and you don't have time go through troubleshooting. I Suggest you download mymobiler which connects the phone and you can use it through your pc. Make sure you take the sd card before you connect. Here is the website www.mymobiler.com
In my case, my phone was RIP. The touch screen stopped working after installing a custom ROM. I installed the latest official ROM from T-Mobile and my phone and came back to life
Hi Guys, flashed my phone with a Xanny rom months back, the phone has worked faultlessly before & since.
On Sunday i was in the middle of sending a text and the screen froze, i could see everything ok on the screen but the phone didn't respond to my touch. I got it going by pushing the reset button. The phone booted up ok but the screen alignment was out, I then started the alignment process, which went round in circles for 7 minutes, Eventually the alignment finished. Monday i noticed that the more I used the phone the more the alignment skewed out, every time i recalibrated the screen alignment it took ages. I hard reset the phone, it was the same. I flashed a stock orange rom, it was the same.
I admitted defeat this morning and rang orange, as the phone is more than 6 months old they put me on to HTC, its being picked up tomorrow by ups, turn around "should be less than 7 days".
All in all I'm very disappointed, my previous PDA was an HP iPAQ 4700. I used it daily for work & social use for 5 years, with never a problem.
When the touch came along I felt here was a device that improves on the iPAQs screen, so i went and bought one. A bit miffed that it has failed already, I'm a bit OCD with my gadgets so its never been dropped or knocked is always in its custom made padded leather case and has had a screen cover on from new. In fact it is unmarked, i hope it still will be when/if it comes back.
I just need to know he'll pull through !!

Update 13/03/2010
Right just got off the phone to HTC. Not very impressed.
They have quoted me £162 for the repair, It needs a main board as I have "cooked" my ROM, and a digitizer. I had flashed my phone with a xanny rom 6 months ago, but put a stock orange rom in before it went back. How they found out I've no idea, I pointed out to the bloke on the phone (when i could understand what he was saying) that the rom has no impact on the touch screen & could i just have the touch screen replaced and leave the main board, but no the rom is stock now but had been changed before and as such you need a new main board, even though it works fine. Complete b*****ks. When my contract is up I shall not be buying another HTC, fools.
So bugger 'em i say, i've paid to have it sent back, and i've found a digitizer on ebay for £14, i'll fix it myself... Has anyone got a link to instructions on how to take it apart ? if not I'll wing it

its prolly fine, they will prolly just put a new digitizer on it.
***Bump***
before you sended it back did you replace the spl whit the standard one
thats probably the reason how the found out it has been flashed
I have exactly the same problem as D4D. I have never dropped or get wet my phone but 2 days ago while I was typing a message or something I felt that screen does not responds correctly. It was very difficult to unlock my phone and type as well. Hard reset couple of times without success. The phone started normally, the alignment process passes, i have to calibrate more times than usual - 2 to 5 passes but the issue remains.
Then I flashed stock ROM - no improvement, put back the cooked ROM - again no improvement. The phone is still in warranty but I flashed many cooked ROMs on it. So what should I do ?

flash stock rom and stock spl
i had the same issue when the phone got cold (guessing the digitizer) but i noticed that the phone is fine now after running cleanram ever 12 hrs
I am on the stock rom
hello, recently my phone's touchscreen does not work. Only when I initially turn it on, it will work until I turn off the screen or if someone calls, I am able to answer then the touchscreen works. Other than that, if I power on the screen, I cannot unlock it at all. I am currently using NAND version of Android on my phone and it have been perfectly fine for weeks. Does anyone have any clue? I have already tried to load a different version of the rom but still the same problem is occurring.
Could be a hardware problem. Send it back for repair.
This is a hardware problem. Send it back to HTC for repair.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using Tapatalk
Try turning on your screen with the other buttons beside the red end call one.
This happened to me, however, eventually, it stopped working whenever i pressed any of the other buttons to turn on the screen for touch to work also, so it's best to send it for repair while you still can.
For all of you having issues with screen freeze, here is my take. (Before I waste any of your time, I just want to say that I finally had to send it to HTC for repair) This is NOT a software issue but a hardware issue.
I have been flashing roms ever since HTC 8225 came out. I don't want to sound like an expert, but I am an above average user.
I have been using my HD2 for over a year. Then the screen started freezing out of the blue after it locks. Then I had to reboot it and it worked as long as it didn't lock.
Then I figures out that it started working when i awoke the phone by pressing the "BACK" button. So I kept doing that for a while till that stopped working. Then I figures out that if I tilt the phone sideways, almost like changing the screen to landscape, brought it back to upright position, and pressed the back button, it unlocked. However, this also stopped working after few days.
(I also tried to flash many different roms to make sure that this is not a software problem)
Finally the touchscreen stopped working altogether.
Then I called HTC to see if I was still under warranty. I thought I was way past the warranty period but HTC said that I was under the warranty. So I send in the phone for repair and it is on the way back from repair. I didn’t have to pay anything since it was still under warranty.
If your phone is under warranty, send it in for repair as soon as possible. Even if it works for a little while, it needs to be fixed.
I just wrote what I have learned by trying different things. When I flashed factory roms and the screen is totally unresponsive, I concluded that it is a hardware issue.
If you know better, share it with the community!
Thanks for the response everyone.
I have tried to turn on the phone using any other button but the red button and it works. But as most of you already experienced, it will probably get worse. I don't think my phone is under warrantee anymore so is there a repair kit for this?
I have worked on a handful of HTC phones but the HD2 is different. You need to use a soldering iron to remove the touch screen connection. I personally don’t like to deal with stuff like that! As far as a kit, I am not sure. There are videos on youtune which can walk you through changing the screen. Then again, I am not sure what needs to be changed. Is it the screen? Is it the digitizer or something else? Keep searching... Good Luck!
digitizer broken, send the HD2 for repair
Obviously, if you phone still falls into warranty period, reflash original stock WM
good luck
