Hi everyone! I recently helped my friend update to cupcake after flawlessly updating mine. In the process he accidentally reverted to RC29 so we got it back up to RC33, and then updated to cupcake using the new Radio and SPL. We updated to JF's 1.50 ADP version. Shortly after, he noticed that a big square on his screen was dead, and wouldn't react to his touch. (about 25% on the bottom left, but a little part on the side still works. IE: Theres a square that is dead, but its not completely up against the side of the screen, its sort of floating in the bottom left corner) I have heard of no problem like this, what could be the issue? (he didn't notice it until after cupcake). And it seems to be interfering with about everything, especially scrolling and the like. If anyone can offer any help that would be great!
EDIT: I just re-read and it occured to me I should clarify something. The screen itself isn't dead, as in a dead pixel(s). Its just that it doesn't react to touch.
If you guys didn't wipe that helps, i had a minor issue were my screen wouldn't respond but did after i did a wipe.
Try a wipe.
boot into recovery by holding home and hitting power
hit alt + w
reboot and sign in and see if the issue persists
if so, try flashing RC29 and re-rooting and try a different build this time
gl
Well actually right after applying the JF ADP 1.5 he had to do a wipe because he was going from RC to ADP. But he's going to do another one and see what the outcome is.
Well it turns out the wipe did not help. Also, it will still work but only if you push really hard it treats it like a long press. Could this have been caused from dropping the phone, a dead spot on the touch screen?
It sounds to me like there may just be some dead pixels. In that case, the warranty is your best friend. Of course, I would try reverting to a previous build that wasn't giving him any issues. If the screen still has some dead pixels, call T-Mobile to get a replacement (assuming the phone was purchased from them and still under warranty).
Issue: It was bought on eBay and is being used on AT&T. And its not dead pixels, the screen looks fine. Its just the touch.

like i said...flash RC29 back to it -- this will put the software to a factory fresh state.
[HOW TO] UNROOT, get phone to STOCK firmware
if it still exhibits the symptom, it has to be a hardware problem

This morning, my touch screen suddenly stopped working. Hardware keys are still working but device is not responding when the screen is touched. Already tried a hard reset but no success, now I am stuck at the align display screen. Also can no longer get to the bootmenu, so can't reflash my device! Any suggestions on what's wrong or how this can be fixed? Thanks for any help!!!!
I'm curious
Didn't you see any spots (like oil spots on the water) to the touch screen ?
I had the same problem .I replaced the touch screen and the phone is working again .
No, nothing, was working fine at night, when i woke up just randomly stopped working. The display is not cracked or anything, so wondering whether a screen replacement will do the trick? ALso strange that I can no longer get to the bootscreen to enter HardSPL...
Had the same problem, the issue (with mine anyhow) was the digitizer, which is an overlay that sits on top of the actual LCD screen to give it touch capability....
good post here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=392301&highlight=digitizer
I had a similar problem,
To get past the Align screen I had to apply pressure to the top of the screen opposite side of front facing camera - then use the screen as normal
I reflashed the original rom (manually getting to bootloader) - it worked for a bit but ended up sending is back to 02 for repair.
All they did apparently, was to reflash the ROM again and its been working since.
Had the same problem a couple of times a while ago, when i was trying out WM6.5.
All buttons worked but not the touch screen. Never really found out exactly what the problem was, but the first time I managed to get it working again by resetting the alignment:
While gps button pressed (under green button), press center D-pad button this will bring you to alignment screen.
The other time the "alignment trick" didn't work, but i got it working again, after flashing the original ROM couple of times. (And doing hard reset between each time)
I think I used this ROM
You say you can't get to the boot menu, do you run hard-SPL?
most likely its an hardware issue - had this one too, of course out of nowhere!
flash with original rom and if you cannot align screen (as the hardware seems to be broken) send it in for repair. it will be under guarantee, if screen isnt broken.
I had similar problem, I passed the alignment but i had a huge offset in the touch.
I replaced the touch screen and it solved the problem.
You can find it in ebay for 1 US $.

Thanks for all the help guys!!! I do run hard-SPL and have flashed many ROMS - just don't know why it won't enter the bootscreen anymore when I reset the device and press the camera button. Did manage to upload original ROM again by using activesync, now trying to restore original hard-SPL so I can send off the device for repair.
Hi, i had also the same problem, i find a threat in the internet... try to push the upper corners on the device with your fingers and then tab on the screen to see if the problem solved.
I had the same issue.
Its more than likely your digitizer. I tried flashing 100 different roms but always stuck at the align screen stage.
I actually have the barely used digitizer if anyone wants it (for a few dollars of course hehe) My mainboard died a couple of weeks after i installed the digitizer.
needless to say i moved away from the ****ty build quality of HTC to the MUCH better build quality of the iPhone.
so this is whats going on. i have a brand spanking new aria, just did a insurance job on the last one. so rooted and put cyanogen rc2. now out of the blue my screen will not respond to touch. sorta. if i use one finger it wont work, but if i use two fingers in differant spots on the screen it will sorta respond. barely enough to get the screen lock open. track ball, power button and volume control work fine. i have cleared data twice and reflashed also. im beating my head against the wall. it makes no sense to me....please help
this happend to me last night with my rooted aria with cyanogen also I pulled the battery and it worked for me now it works again
it may help you
battery was the first thing i tried
If I recall correctly, most phones you get from insurance are refurbs, but they should have a warranty on them.
Anyway, try wiping the phone, then reflashing the stock rom. It will un-root the phone and convert it back to how it came from factory. If that doesn't work, then I'd give insurance another call, could be a faulty unit.
I would recommend pulling down the notification bar and trying again I have had problems where it causes the screen to not function right until I pull it down a second time.

Had my vega for just 3 days, i left it on charge on the first night and when i tried to use it the morning after the touch screen was more or less completely dead, only a 1" stripdown the left side in landscape mode was responding to touch so i couldn't even unlock it without using the wake then press the back button method - even then the screen was non responsive.
I did a reboot hoping this would solve it but no change, anyway after leaving it off for half an hour and rebooting the screen started to work again and I had no further issues that day.
that night i let it go to sleep again and had the same issue again this morning, the screen was non responsive after a prolonged( 6hour ) sleep
this time i decided to see if it was software so put it into nvboot mode and flashed the modaco rom, - after getting the new rom up and running the screen was still lazy, serious dead spots in terms of touch, i let it go to sleep for a few hours in the afternoon and tonight the touch is not working again.
I bought it online from dixons, and tbh the box appeared to have already been opened when i got it.
I'm starting to think its a faulty unit with a serious hardware fault - has anyone else experienced the same - did you find a fix?
Have you tried running the screen calibration tool, i think it is included in the modaco rom. I have not had anything as serious as you seem to have (only a slight dead spot in the bottom left corner of the screen, which the tool fixed) might be worth a go, if you have not tried it, before getting a exchange.
thanks Ganjaman, cant get the darn thing past the accept terms and conditions screen after a fresh install of stock rom because i cant press the accept button because its in a non responsive part of the touch screen.
dont think i have any option but to return it

Bad luck! Hope you can get a exchange in-store.
Have flashed the new 1.09 rom and it seems to have fixed the screen issue.
What was interesting. Was that if I warmed the tablet up slightly near a heater the screen would slowly start working again. Ganjaman, will your 1.08 update add market to 1.09
I am going to remake it for v1.09 shortly, i need to remove flash change the build.prop and i am going to add usb switcher. Glad you sorted it.
Sorry for my bad English.
A few days ago, I decided to flash back my touch hd to the stock rom due to the big battery drain and slow performance.
Now my problems are gone and my phone is really fast,
but my screen is acting weird.
It happens mostly when I'm typing an sms, for example: I'm using swype and I want to swype a word that starts with the letter 'd', so I press 'd' and the swype line goes from the a to the d and then follows the path I've swyped.
It even writes a word that starts with an 'a'.
this is just an example, so I can describe what my problem is.
basically my screen thinks that I'm tapping somewhere else on the screen and then knows my actually tap-place.
This is not a bug in swype or sms, it happens everywhere in windows mobile.
It also isn't a screen allignment problem.
does anyone know how to fix this?
so again: it is the stock rom with the stock spl. is this a known issue, or are there any fixes?
thanks,
Artuur
Hmmm interesting...
so this did happen on any other rom you had flashed?
No, only on this stock rom.
I never had it with the stock rom when I had just bought the device, and I didn't had it on the cooked roms.
The problem began when I reflashed from energy rom to the stock rom.
Everything else (phone, wifi, bluetooth, battery...) is just fine.
i had strange issues with my touch screen before.
first i was sure that it came with the installation of mobile icq, so i got rid of it, didn't fix anything, hard reset, everything was fine for a while. then the problem came back, tried different roms, no change....
to cut a long story short, everytime the issue came up, i would panic, align the screen dozens of times and in the end perform a hard reset, just to realize it got me nowhere, until i finally found, that removing the display protector did the trick, apparently, there was a tiny air bubble somewhere on the very edge, that distorted all my inputs to slightly different spots.
since then i run the device without protector and everything is fine. from time to time it will still behave strange but carefully cleaning the display always resolves the issue, sometimes teeny tiny spots of dirt keep the device pressed in one spot and due to the way resistive touch screens work, it would only accept the middle of the 2 virtual press points as input.
so my advice would be:
1. clean your display, really clean it, especially the very edges, there can be something stuck there, practically invisible.
2. make sure, it is not software related, by flashing hspl, then a cooked rom and another radio, in combination with task 29 and hard resets makes sure, everything on your device is replaced.
3. if all that doesn't fix a thing, you might need to think about getting a new digitizer or entire screen.
hmmm. try a hard reset! or try flashing to a custom ROM, then reflashing again?
Hello all. First let me state that I rather not make a thread to ask help on a problem that seems to have happened to a few owners, but my knowledge as to how I could resolve the issue is severely lacking..
At some point today my phone was ringing but the screen would not show. I thought about taking the battery out and turning it back on but there would be no HTC, Bootanimation, anything. It was Just a black-lit screen which responds due to tactile feedback and the four touchkeys light up as usual. At first there was an odd sound that would play after a few minutes so I decided to charge it but again there was nothing. Even tried to access bootloader with -Vol and Power still no screen.
I asked a friend of mine to call my phone to see if it would ring but they said it instantly goes to voicemail as if my phone was off. Note that I WAS SURE IT WAS ON.
Adb seems to work with it as it seems whatever I need to do I have to do it through there.
G2 rooted with gfree method
CM7.1 RC1
Clockwork Recovery
Again i am sorry if I bothered those with posting something others would think is "too common of a problem" as I have no experience in fixing this issue. Plus I would like to try any option available as I would not like to try and have my phone replaced (because of the risk of discovering root and obtaining a G2 with stock gingerbread which is currently not rootable)
Please help..
It sounds like you're suffering from some sort of hardware failure. You need to send your phone in for repair/replacement.

A. They don't care if its rooted.
B. You can root stock Gingerbread.
Same issue here...
I'm facing the same issue, when i try to unlock the phone (power button or trackpad) the screen lights but stays black, and the buttons are also backlit. I have to lock again with power button and unlock again to get to the actual screen.
It first happened a few days ago, and since i didn't reboot/restart in weeks i tried to reboot but the same issue comes back.
then i shut it down, pulled the battery and then back, and restarted: the phone goes directly to that black backlit screen, i tried several times and tried recovery with no luck, so i thought my phone was messed up although i did have some haptic feedback, well in fact the phone was actually booting, but just not showing anything else than the backlit screen; i waited a minute or so to the booting completes (still shows nothing), then i lock/unlock the screen again and there it is, asking for the pin code.
I tried to go to the recovery again to try to wipe dalvik-cache, i know for sure it goes to recovery, but with a totally black screen, not even backlit this time; the trackpad is too sensitive in the recovery to just blindly navigate in the menu, so it is not useable at all.
Then i had the idea to go to Rom Manager, i reflashed the rom from my sd-card, and enabling wipe dalvik-cache, which worked (all through a black screen). After a few minutes i "felt" it rebooting (vibrating) but still back to that black backlit screen, and i locked/unlocked it again and back it was asking pin code...
I also tried to roll back recovery to 3.0.2.4, since i remember i updated it a few weeks ago, but still the same issue.
I don't know what else to do without accessing the recovery, i wanted to try another kernel, or remove the trackpad wake... is there a way to do it via a script? I guess it's what Rom manager does...
Next step will be a total wipe, but i need to make some room on my sdcard for backup purposes first...
If anyone has an idea to sort this out, i'm highly interested...
I'll try to get a logcat, maybe could give a hint
Edit: Virtuous sense 2.0.0 (used it with no issue since it came out, could it be a hw issue?)
Edit2 : attached logcat
Is the pin screen differant than the usual one ie white number keys? If it is that's the sim lock screen you need to call the carrier to get the code or find out the default. Or just get a new sim lol
nah it's the 4 digit pin code, i didn't lose it btw, it's still working and i can use the phone, but i have a black backlit screen whenever i want to wake the phone, and thus when i receive a phone call, i don't know who it is and i blindly press/swipe the screen to answer, because if i want to use the same trick of locking /unlocking, it doesnt work as the lock button is also used to reject a call...
Maybe rip and reinstall the phone app?

I have the same exact problem as this EXCEPT, it's intermittent. Sometimes when I wake the phone I get an all black but backlight screen, and other times it's fine. I'm on CM7.1.
But a superwipe and reflash will probably fix it. Also don't restore system data on TB
I know i still can use wipe data + cache + dalvik through rom manager, and i always used to superwipe before switching roms, but how can i do that now when the recovery is all blacked out?
can anyone guide me to a script or something i could do while the phone is active, to tell him to reboot to recovery and flash that superwipe?
anyway i'll try the regular wipe and keep the thread updated

On my side if i leave the phone locked more than 30 seconds, it happens 100% of the time; also I noticed that now the backlight blinks 2 or 3 times (1 second blinking) when locked, first a few minutes after locking, and then randomly, about 3 or 4 times per hour; I guess it's getting worse;
I've read on another thread that it could be video cable getting loose, but since mine is still under guarantee, i won't open it right now just to check, if i can't fix by wiping / superwiping (when i know how to), i'll use that guarantee, which is one month left (lucky me)
EDIT: one other thing that makes me think it's no hardware, when the black screen appears because of a phone call or a message, the ringtone and notification sound are both half as loud as they should be, this is all really strange
after backing up my data, i reflashed the rom via Rom Manager, and I wiped data and cache (which equals to factory reset) this time: the first screen that should show the pin code numpad was already a black (backlit) screen!!
Also, thinking about it, i realised that the "flash rom from sdcard" menu in Rom Manager is in fact "Flash ZIP from sdcard": the zip doesn't have to be a ROM!!
So I tried flashing a new kernel this way, also some framework modifications (extended settings, removed TP wake, etc...) they all install Ok, but still this black screen...
Also I was about to flash SuperWipeG2.zip this way, but if it doesn't fix my problem, I will be stuck with a blacked out recovery, as SuperWipe wipes everything including /system; so if anyone has an idea to tell Rom Manager to flash two zips (Superwipe then Rom) i'll be willing to try, or a script to do that;
Maybe i'll have a look of the scripts in Superwipe and in the rom, and put both zips together... don't know if it's possible?
Maybe I'll try the Superwipe alone if I can get a spare phone, just in case...
Other thing:I used the phone's gps for more than 5 hours with the screen lit, and it never flickered even once; so it's hard to believe it's a screen connection issue...
Just to keep this updated, everything i did, including superwipe didn't change this issue, so i sent it back to the technical support (under guarantee) and I got it back today; the report that came with it says the screen has been replaced; so it was hardware finally...
Hi, i have same problem.. Black screen in recovery and during the boot. When the system boots, screen is OK. Sometimes i have also blackscreen when I want to use HW keyboard. I tried 4ext, reflash older versions of CW but still the same. I can see a screen through Android Screen Monitor and I can cotrol it. But phone is blak, only backlight. Can somebody say, how to solve this issue?
So, for other, if you cant see screen, you can use Android Screen Monitor for Windows and connect phone through USB and see a screen.

WAIT one minute... they don't care? where was I when this meeting took place?
I had this issue as well on a spare G2 I had.
The screen was just black but you could tell it was lit, hardware keys were lit as well.
The phone was actually my brothers and it rooted w/ CM7.
I ended up selling the phone as is on Ebay but after some research it was a failure in the hardware for the screen and I found extensive instructions on how to replace it that I didn't wish to do.
I never attempted to get it replaced and kind of wish I did now if they don't care about the device being rooted.
I purchased my G2 before he had his, and it's never had the issue so not sure what to think of it.
