hey guys, i dont have any proof that it is actually coming to the tmobile 1, but i would like to point something out, and i think you guys might agree.
HTC sense ui would NOT be coming to the tmobile g1 with google because of the 'with google'
it is the same with the mytouch 3g, it's a 'with google', and therefore, because of copyright issues (or whatever) the with google part does not allow them to put sense ui on it.
meanwhile..., i was checking out the sprint sight to take a look at the pixi when i noticed:
they are calling the hero the HTC Hero with google
if u look now, it will still say 'with google'
now, im not sure, but i think that this means that there is a good chance it may be coming to the tmobile g1, if HTC and google got passed the 'with google' part
thoughts concerns?
if this has been discussed, im sorry, checked around and didnt see anything
If they did they would have to optimize the crap out of it like the devs here did because of the hardware differences. Why not just load up a hero rom and have it now.
i run JACs, and i love it. it would just be cool; an official one would probably have everything that cant be ported atm.
but yes, optimizing would be a *****
Hey Guys,
I was wondering that since Google is already sharing the Donut Love with G1's and Magic's when are we gonna see some Donut love for our lovely piece of Hardware we all know as HERO ...
I am guessing Htc is working on the 1.6 SDK provided by Google to integrate it with ROSIE, but i am thinking the Developers here are alot faster than the guys and HTC.
So can we get a Rosie with 1.6 which is rooted ofcourse but nothing else... no other modifications i mean.
Respect to all.

Good question, I would love to see that as well... BUT I suppose it is not possible without the kernel sourse, unless Sprint's Hero comes out with 1.6 and then its ROM is ported to our European Heros. That's up to the devs!
Well the Sprint Hero HAS to come with Donut... It's CDMA, and that's only supported in Donut, so I'm almost 100% positive it will ship with Donut.

That was what I thought. But Joshua @ Engadget told me that their Sprint Hero review unit only has Android 1.5 on it. Well, Android 1.6 added support for CDMA does not necessarily mean that one cannot write a driver for Android 1.5 to support CDMA.
But anyway, I do think that it is almost likely that HTC will release a 1.6 update for the Hero in a not too distance future.
The Google experience G1s and Magics are purely that - stock Cupcake ROMs. The Hero presents a slight challenge as HTC put a lot of love into the ROM, with the addition of SenseUI. Hopefully, it won't take that long to cook a Donut ROM with SenseUI, but just making the transition of the great innovations from HTC for the Hero will be the stumbling block for a Donut-based ROM.
HTC Response to my Donut question.
I asked when they'd release a ROM using Dognut ( 1.6 ) for the Hero.
Their reply:
Good Morning, HTC do not release the ROM updates. Google do. If you have any questions relating thier operating system, the updates, its benefits and release dates please visit www.android.com for further support. Here at HTC, we manufacture the hardware on the device and release hotfixes for when reported bugs needs resolution. If you have a technical support related query regarding the device, please do not hesitate to contact us again. Kind Regards, HTC Europe
This has constantly been my experience with HTC - ask them a question and they say contact Google.

Man thats so frustrating innit. I am sure if we ask google, they wont comment either coz our hero is not with "GOOGLE EXPERIENCE" ..... what a load of cr*p
well i actually snooped around and heard a couple of ppl say that it should not be a difficult task for HTC to induce Rosie into 1.6, infact one of them even said " should be a peice of cake" so i am a hopless optimist and hopefully it'll be sent as an OTA upgrade or " HOTFIX " by HTC soon...
I'll call HTC too and see if i can get any more info out
update
Just got off the phone with a customer support officer from HTC UK. And she said that while they dont have the exact date on when HTC will issue and update bundled with Donut, It is under works and will be sooner rather than later..... now the waiting games begin
correct me if I'm wrong, but 1.6 doesn't bring that much for us Hero owners right? When the first announcements came I looked through the "Whats new" list and I didn't start shouting from excitement

well the only notable improvement might be of the speed and performance, although google didn't shout about it so i m thinking it'll be minimalistic ... however detailed battery usage, universal search and test to speech are a few things i wouldn't mind having....
But actually for me its just about getting the latest updates on the Android flagship device...

One benefit will be being able to run any future apps that require 1.6 (use 1.6-specific API features). We already have apps that run only on 1.5 or higher...
system-wide search feature would be nice...
I'm not sure if anyone has noticed this, but I signed up to point it out:
http://www.htc.com/europe/product/tattoo/specification.html
http://developer.htc.com/htc_tattoo_developer.html
The Tattoo will be shipping with Android 1.6, and it uses the Sense UI. That should mean that it isn't too far off for the Hero.
Looks promising! and the Tatoo is Due to launch orange UK this month
VPN and Global search are the two main features I am most excited about in the Donut
It's supposed to be faster also.
Does 1.6 not also include the improved App Store for Android?

I installed donut on my girlfriends g1 yesterday and it seemed much faster than cupcake.
i was wondering who in here has come over to this phone from a blackberry.
likes? dislikes?
i have been reading some on here about the "lag" with the HTC HD2. is this true? all the reviews i read say nothing about it. and i do not like a laggy phone. and disabling Sense makes no "sense" to me...
also, is there alot of customizations that can be done? how about updates? are they common like on a blackberry? will win7 mobile be able to be run on this? hows the battery life compared to the iphone? (that is why i dont have an iphone any more, i cant stand the battery life)
i LOVe the looks of that phone...
Thanks all!
I jummped the Blackberry ship for the HD2 last week.
I wont be able to answer ALL your questions 100%, but I will be able to help.
Lag, If you use your task manager and close the unused programs, then you *shouldnt* have any lag. I am still using the stock phone settings from T-Mo. and I am not seeing any lag at all just by closing the app/programs this way.
Customizing, The phone is still new, and the devs here are working hard to push out new stuff all the time. But the phone is VERY customisable. If your comfy working with DLL and CAB files you can change the layout/colors/buttons/exctra of the dif screanes and apps.
WP7, As of right now.. No. But the devs here are working on it, as well as the Droid os.
While Blackberry has updates offten, it still upto the provider to push em out to the end users, and T-Mo, is the worst at doing so. But you can get all the updates/mods/apps from the devs here.
Batterie life can be awesome, or it can be the bane of your phone. lol. If you keep task manager clean, the batterie will last for wat feels like for ever. I ran both of the Transformer movies from start to credits, played on the internet a bit, and made a few calls, and still had a lot of bat strength left. but if you run a lot of apps in the back ground, and dont keep your task manager clean, you will charge your phone 2x a days.
Over all im loving this phone. I have a ton to learn about it still, but it is a great phone.
My $.02

Thank you so much for your reply. that helped alot.
i just sold 2 of my BB's, so i am looking now at buying one i cant wait
I have to say with my blackberry experience with the one I carry around for work, a Nextel 8350i. being the network admin for the company I work for, and I also work with the BES server software. they can get pretty laggy as well at times. especially when there is alot of background data transfer going on to the BES server.
In the end i prefer my HD2 to blackberry. I consider the BB a good platform for someone who wants something that just works, and arent very technically minded like the people I work with. I can already imagine the issues Id run into trying to introduce the WinMo platform there.
WinMo is good for technical users that like to tweak and customize and can live with or work around the occasional bug, and are able to figure things out for themselves or with the help of a support forum like this
I would never recommend WinMo for someone that requires hand holding with anything technical/computer related. it just becomes too much of a hassle and waste of time for me having to support them.
great post...that makes me feel better to. i feel the same way, i have owned alot of blackberrys and they do lag alot more.
and i am one who LOVES to tinker with things..so i am thinking i might like this better...are there ways to recover if you play TO much and brick your phone?
also i cant seem to find any screen shots of what the sms inbox looks like? was wondering. is it threaded messages?
IF you successfully install HSPL, the chances of really "bricking" your HD2 are pretty low. The worst thing you can do "brick" a TMOUS HD2 is to flash an incompatible Radio (one with ...51... in the identifier string). As long as you stay with T-Mobile compatible Radios/ROMs, you should be fine.

Yeah, it has threaded sms messages. And there are almost always ways to recover your phone from bricking it, unless you flash the wrong radio, like he said in the post above. Just don't flash ones with .51 in them and your fine. Odds are you won't even need to flash your radio, so it's nothing to worry about. Good luck with your new HD2. Its the most versatile, powerful phone when you learn to use it well.
Yeah, I was a fellow BlackBerry user. I've had 2 in past... and my most recent device was the BlackBerry 9700.
I certainly miss the days where I'd manage to squeeze 70 hours out of a single charge cycle.
But nevertheless, I am absolutely in love with the HD2. Plus, I've owned countless HTC products, and I'm always left satisfied and smiling...
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!
(I couldn't help myself...)
i JUST got it! walmart had one left and i had a gift certificate. omg i love it alreay, and i have not even started to play with it. Guys i need your help...
what do i do first? updates? how do i know what updates to do? are there any tutorials in here i can read about noobs? i want to make sure mine is up to date for sure...but so far i love it. what a nice screen and feel...
LOVE IT!
I just upgraded from a Blackberry curve, and from an IT professional's standpoint, I love this phone. The ability to tinker, the software community here, multimedia capabilities, and the tools built in (wifi access point, slacker, etc.) are a welcome breath of fresh air to having a smart phone.
i have been looking and reading, but im getting a little confused. where do i go to find any updates for my phone? i cant seem to find any on the HTC website?

is this because the tmobile version just came out?

For this to be a smooth transition you must realize this is a completely different experience. There will not be a lot, if any, official updates. What there will be is unofficial/leaked updates that are implemented in custom (cooked) roms. Some of these will be leaked from Microsoft and some will be released from HTC but TMobile USA will most likely not leak any. Don't panic though, because this is why we love XDA Devs so much.
You will need to read MSkips tutorial on flashing HardSPL. HSPL will allow you to flash these custom roms and a few other things. These custom roms will often be cutting edge so read which ones you really want because some will simply be going for speed, others looks and others stability. There are some great cooks around here who actually combine all three.
I write this because you are already panicking on a lack of updates. That's just not how it works here so you have to let it go. You don't find the same OS version on every model like in BlackBerry or Iphone over here. Older models are having roms cooked for them that include what only the new ones have out the box because many of the older phones here don't have the memory or are simply out of the loop for the carrier and HTC. My 8525 was like that. I'm just explaining so you understand the landscape better.
The best way to succeed here is to search and ask questions once you can't find the answers. Most of the stuff you have questions about has been asked and answered before (most but not all). Make sure to read in this forum and the other HD2 forum because the phones aren't that different. If you have a question or concern about a specific program or rom make sure you ask the question in that thread and not create a new thread.
Welcome to WinMo and XDA Devs. Also our TMo USA HD2's do have the latest official updates.
Hope your htc hd2 blows up! The starter of this thread is a joke! He bothers me for two days texting me as early as 5am saying he wants the phone please dont sell, as he's waiting for the money. We make a deal after going back and fourth on text messages. He tells me a few hours later he's not buying because he bought it locally at walmart. WHAT A PATHETIC JERK!! I ^&%^ wasted my time taking pix to send him just for him to take this whole thing as a JOKE! I lost out on another potential deal because this idiot agreed on buying it. BE AWARE of this LOSER!!!

I really don't know what to say about this. Did I talk with him about buying his phone yes, did we talk back and fourth all day about it? yes. Isn't that what craigslist is all about? bartering, making deals etc? it was at the last moment when i found out a local walmart had one HD2 left at the same price he was selling it at, and i had a gift card so it was even cheaper, and it was 5 min from my house (for returns etc) so that is why i backed out. I am in no way a "scammer" because of this. sorry, im not.
I apologized multiple times, and he wont accept, so there is no more that I can do. I even tried a few contacts to see if they would buy it from him. I cant do any more...
on a positive, Jain75 was Very good with communication, and answered all my questions i had about the sale. he did take multiple pictures for me like i had asked. I had asked for all of that, because i was sending someone 450 dollars whom i did not know, so i wanted all the proof that the phone was legit that i could get. and he did give that all to me.
again, i feel really bad, but what else can i do? i have had MANY MANY people say "yeah ill buy that, let me get back to you" and i never hear back. at least i told him the truth,....
I just recently came over from a blackberry storm 2 to hd2 April 1. Let me say that the HD2 is a totally different experience from blackberry. I loved how the blackberry managed my business OTOH it sucked for pleasure. With the HD2 you get both business and pleasure.
HTC blows blackberry out of the water to me, at least this hd2 does. By that I mean large screen, plenty of themes, apps, etc. Not the same old tired interface as blackberry. It has NO LAG WHATSOEVER. This phone has all my needs met and more.
Only thing about windows is you have to find roms, apps, etc instead of it being in a central location.
I will be using this phone for awhile, t-mobile is crappy in my area so I unlocked to at&t.
I carry a BB Tour and a HD2 right now.
The only two things I like about the BB over the HD2 are the battery life of the BB and the keyboard. I HATE the HD2 on screen keyboard. Even swipe blows.
But if you are anything like me, it's all about the Apps (quality Apps, that is). The HD2 is my media phone, hands down (better than my iPhone). The BB is the work horse and back up music player.

I hate the onscreen keyboard too lol. I have been trying to find another input keyboard that somewhat resembles blackberry.
Actually this HD2 can do it all. Give it a try. I use it for my business and media. I plug my phone up to my car everyday for media and it charges it as well.
Anybody else hear about this? Is this going to prevent us from modifying ROMs? I thought we took care of that issue back when Cyanogen got his Cease and Desist order from Google. I've gotta say that I have been recommending HTC to everyone but if they wont allow thier ROMs to be modified anymore. I guess I'll have to purchase my next android phone from another company :-(

What do you mean "we" took care of this. The only ones that are complying with the "law" is Cyanogen, and I guess Ben is with SuperE. The rest are still bundling Google and HTC apps with their ROM mods.
This has nothing to do with what happened between Cyanogen and Google. In this case, HTC doesn't want their full roms being distributed by someone other than themselves. They also questioned the legality of where the roms came from. Can't say I blame them one bit for protecting their intellectual property.

Actually, the problem was with Google and Cyanogen, and how cyanogen was using google's intellectual, non-open source apps and including them in the build. HTC had nothing to do with it.
The problem now is that shipped-roms was realeasing softwre for unreleased devices before they even hit the market, and HTC doesn't like that.

If this is the case (I did not read what was going on) I agree totally with what you say. You can't blame them for protecting what they have spent time and who knows how much money creating.
I find the "we" mention funny.
I also find it amusing that someone gets so upset when something like this happens and "threatens" to not buy from that company anymore, when all HTC is doing is protecting their IP.
My Suggestion. Download as many ROMs as possible before it's too late lol. *Runs to ROMs*
Well.. i wouldnt even say that... from what I understand from a post a few up... they are upset about their UNRELEASED stuff surfacing on the net... which is understandable.. as far as the ROMS or anything like that... HTC has no say whether u flash a custom rom or not... the farthest they could go.. is saying that sense ui cannot be distributed in hacked roms... same story as google.. As far as them saying you cannot flash any other rom besides their own or what was made for the specific device.. I dont think they are saying that.. or would have any grounds saying u couldnt put 2.1 on a g1 since it is currently only supports 1.6 (stock)..
Do you consider running or creating a modified ROM stealing Google's or HTC's IP. I sure as hell dont think I'm stealing anything. The whole reason I like and bought HTC's phone is because of the large number of mods to choose from. I dont run stock ROMs and I dont know too many who do. I would think that HTC would thank people for improving on their stock ROMs which in turn increases thier sales and demand for thier phones! No one takes credit for the work done by the developers over at google or HTC. I think everyone appreciates the work but just one tha ability to modify and improve apon it. It can only improve the experience of using our phones.
Hey xyrcncp, what are you doing on this forum if you dont use or want to use modified ROMs developed jointly by Google and HTC. I find it amusing that some one on this site is so concerned with HTC's IP. Maybe you should just stick to using stock ROMs and OTAs.....LOLZ
This has already been posed everywhere. STOP THE COPYPASTA!
My guess is ROMs from the AOSP are fine. Those that use HTC's Sense UI would be in trouble. Which is only logical from an IP law point of view. Whether that's a good idea for HTC is another issue. Same for Goog. No one questions their legal right to C&D Cyan. It came down to whether it was logical as a biz decision.

Lets remember that it didn't only host Android ROMs.
Moved as not Android Development.
There were some rumors that some of the Android devices of HTC will not receive the newest update to Android Froyo 2.2. While this is partially true, we’re happy to say that HTC Magic is not included in that “black list”.
As announced by the second largest French mobile operator SFR, the device will receive the desired Froyo soon. Some believe that this will take place even in this month. T-Mobile has also plans to update myTouch 3 G which is basically the same device to Froyo by the end of this year.
Let’s say that the device looks to handle the novelties quite well, considering the fact “of not being that new”. Good job!

I sure hope so would love to have a nice custom rom with 2.2 that works and with tons of bonus stuff pre installed.
Maybe you haven't noticed, but the amazing developers here are having a field day since the froyo source was dropped in to AOSP a few days ago. CM6 should be just around the corner.
i know they are already playing with it, but with a copy from the actually phone i imagine it would be easier to mod and play with since they dont have to port and do all kinds of ridicules things to get it to work on another phone.

Remember that the 32B Magic is the ION/ADP2, everything you need to get a fully working ROM is supplied in the AOSP. What you're suggesting is probably more relevant to devices like the Hero. At any rate, we'll probably see CM6 or some other froyo ROM before a shipped one.
ok well you seem to know more than i do so i hope a 2.2 near perfect rom comes out soom. im so excited lol
