SMART Wireless - Philippines - Networking

Can anyone offer any settings or assistance in setting up 3G access in the Philippines on the SMART network? I have an AT&T Tilt (HTC Kaiser) which I use in the States, and I unlocked it before coming here to the Philippines. I am using a SMART Buddy SIM, and have no problem making calls and sending/receiving texts. The phone shows availability of a 3G network, and I would like to be able to get internet access (10 php for 30 mins of access kicks anything the US offers in the butt). I have found this thread that offers CAB files for SMART and Globe settings, and I have found the associated files on the FTP site, but I would like to know how exactly these modify my phone and its settings before running them. Thanks.

GSM based net connection

Does anyone know if there is a way to connect to a normal ISP, using a GSM connection, instead of GPRS. I have data calls on my t-mobile account, but when i set up my isp details and dial it, the XDA tells me the remote computer is not responding, when it blatently is, cos i can dial it using my laptop.
Hi Dave,
If you are UK based T-Mobile have released their GPRS service last week. They have a number of packages including 0.075p per KB or £15 for 10MB.
Its not on their website but their staff know about it.
Simon.
Your settings are wrong. Put the correct settings in. Ask someone who knows what the correct settings are in order to discover the correct settings
Maybe it's not all about wrong settings.
After I tried to connect to O2 using GSM from Danmark last week, I called O2 Germany and they told me it won't work. They have no roaming partner for GPRS in some countries and they disabled the GSM for whatever reason. The old numbers I could use to dial in last year won't work any longer. I get timeout error messages or "The connection you dialed does not answer". (It doesn't say it don't exist!)
Considering to quit O2 and use T-D1 again instead. I am very disappointed by the O2 net coverage.

OK, some networks do not support GSM data, and frequently networks will not have GPRS agreements with other networks in other countries.
Can you register onto Telia? In Denmark I believe they have GSM data @ 9.6kbps
You also need to make sure that your home network enables 'full' GSM data, maybe that's what you meant in your post. If they switched it off ask them ever so politely if they'll turn it back on.
I connect to the net using the wap number which is included in o2 minutes on the 250 package, (the gsm internet number was not included minutes) you can change the number dialled in the connection settings box. also set it to "always dial"
check the number dialled as it puts a prefix depending on country settings etc you also need data enable on your sim which is done thru your gsm provider. Sorry if i'm saying the obvious... hope this is of help
Dave, you need to have T-Mobile enable CSD (Circuit Switched Data), which is off by default. There is no charge to have this enabled.

3G + Universal + Australia

Hi,
Could those Universal owners in Australia response to this thread with...
a) What provider they are with
b) What plan they are on
c) The procedure for configuring their unit with their provider (to this point of surfing the net on mobile broadband.
Rather than trial and error I thought I'd try and cheat and just ask someone who's gone through all the pain already.
I would also be interested to hear comparisons between plans and providers.
Regards
Michael
I'm interested too! I've been looking on the net at Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Three but I can't see anything really great - all very exy!!
Most are linked with phones on plans - not good for us we've already got the unit.
I want a sim only plan that gives me reasonable rates for data download.
I'm using Three - gave the bundled phone to a friend who wanted to upgrade an old NEC. $99 Cap Plan includes $15 towards data usage, but i've never managed to get past the $99 cap yet.
The data speed is fast - to get 3G you need to create a new connection, set the AccessPoint, which is "3netaccess", and leave all others blank. Roams to Telstra GPRS when out of coverage in Oz.
Don't bother with Three if you go overseas - there's no data coverage outside Australia for Australian customers.
There is also no comprehensible FAQ on their site for the MMS setup - just lots of pages with "your phone comes preconfigured - don't change it" comments. Ringing support is no good, if you try to, they soon figure out you are not using "their" phone, and can't help you.
If anyone else here has MMS working please give the settings.
Telstra Universal on 3G
I purchased my JasJar in the UK on a business trip, and with my UK Vodafone SIM had 3G working fine.
For Telstra 3G you need a new USIM for 3G - they should supply for free if you're a post-paid customer.
It actually roams onto the joing 3/Telstra network and drops back to Telstra GPRS.
The Telstra settings are simple - telstra.internet for the APN
Also, the 3G data plans are more generous - I changed from $55/month 5MB plan to a 3G $15/month 6MB plan.
All seems to be working fine.

I have the JJ and use Telstra. The process was simple, Tell my secretary to give it to me, TElstra call me back and say that I have it, use the Imate auto configure to install it and of I go.
Expensive yes, but in the overall scheme of my business costs, its not worth looking at. Telstra I believe have a special for the video call bit that they charge the same for a video call as they do for a mobile phone call, to get you to join and try it. I dont have anybody interested in video calls.
I didnt need a telstra sim to do this, and havent actually tested it for videos.
I only really use it a little bit for internet connectivity, and given that I have wireless networks at home and office, I dont use the GPRS to 3G connectivity much.
Heads up though and it is posted in these forums elsewhere that phone companies (and I suspect telstra) would limit it your speeds to the minimum required for video conferencing which is 128kb ps, whereas 3G networks are capable of 384kbps, and only switch it on when you ask for it.
I really dont have that much need, and it doesnt even come close to the capabilities and speeds, ease, costs and overall benefits of the ADSL wireless network.
Hi, I sold my Universal (O2 Xda Exec unlocked) to somebody on eBay who lives in Melbourne, Australia.
Today I received this e-mail from him after he received it:
"My sim card doesn't work."invalid or missing sim card" appears. Can you help me to figure out."
Any ideas anyone?
PS: I should add that mine was one of the 1st Execs shipped in December and was definately unlocked as I had it working with O2 and Orange. All I have changed is to install the new Extended ROM update from their web site, which I presume doesn't have SIM locking does it?
PPS: Update from user: "Thanks for your response.Australia has got a couple network. I currently use $49 cap plan Optus network. but I don't have any idea about frequency."
my friend had a problem with optusnet, told it was the phone!!
I put my telstra sim in, worked perfectly the first time.
went to optus, requested a new sim, got it tested it didn't work, logged a support call, waited for call back, tried agin with support, nothing returned, got a telstra sim the next day and never looked back...
moral, optusnet support sucks when they don't sell you a phone, the knoledge is limited and competency sucks.
BUT I do use them for adsl, and home phone, even then acknowledge that they suck.
Tell your customer to test it on a friends telstra card and run the telstra cab, its something in optusnet.
by the way, my friends phone wa the imate jam / xda mini so the problems hadn't even started with the 3g network of the exec.
my jasjar works perfectly on telstra.
pm me, or get your customer onto the forum if I can provide localised help.
Thanks. Can you please clarify what you mean by "run the telstra cab, its something in optusnet"? What is a 'cab'?
Are they the same network and would he be able to retain his account, or does he have to switch networks?
Networks in Australia
Although Optus and Vodafone in Australia actually share a 3G network (3G air interface) everything beyond that is separate so for billing etc your friend would need a new SIM card. It's likely thet Optus people did not sell him a 3G SIM card - they will have to tell them what it is for so they give him the right SIM.
In OZ, Telstra share with 3 so you 'roam' onto the 3 network for 3G even though you have a Telstra SIM
the cab file is located on the extended rom, or on the 02 website, or the imate website, I have also posted the file elsewhere on this forum if you look for telstra.
if you cant find it, i can locate it and post it, just dont have it handy now.
a cab file installs programs or settings to a device. this particular one sets up all the mms, phone and 3 g settings. if he did a hard reset, the phone itself would ask him his communications provider and do this automatically. but telstra can only be used on telstra, and optus on optus networks, and they are effectively strings of commands to access gprs, 3g, and wap sites.
he may not have run the setup correctly on this. if he installs total commander, and types into the address field \extended_rom\ he would be able to locate the file on the device already and just run it to establish his correct settings.
however, i feel it is likely that the sim card is dud.
Hi all, thanks for your previous help. The customer now has a new SIM from Optus, Australia, which works great for calls.
However, he cannot set up GPRS. He states:
"I tried everything to set up gprs setting.I couldn't.I check the my friend's xda ii series gprs setting. It has got auto config option. So it does itself. But my xda exec ask me phone number ,domain name, username password, dns setting etc.
I rang to Optus technical support. They told me they don't support this one. They gave me dns number but didn't work. But I think . if xda ii works, exec should work.I just need set up for Australia. Please help me."
Does anyone have a link to an Optus Australia auto-config util that will send him the config in a magic SMS?
Failing that, can you type all the details here or provide a link to the Optus cab?
I'm with Vodafone on a $79 cap. The cap value includes data ($1/5min), but the billing by time rather than downloads might not suit most people.
As for configuring the phone - I just downloaded the operator settings CAB file from clubimate.com. Sets up everything perfectly!
AFIK, Vodafone and Optus are the only ones that will offer Sim-only 3G plans. Of course, you can go with Three, and just discard the phone (you can get a free phone on a $29 cap!)
JJ on Three network
JJ on Three network.
I'm going to check this post and report in the near future:
http://aussie3g.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=16121&highlight=jasjar+3netaccess
telstra also offer 3g plans, but I use their phone network and sim card as part of our corporate plan.
I have sent the customer the std cab file on my imate rom, which he reports was not beneficial for him.
I am not on optus so don't actually have the configuration settings.

i never tried data, but videocalls worked fine...the only limitation being it only works on the overseas 3 network (3 - Hong Kong in my case, this was 2 years ago when i still lived in brisbane)
It's okay guys, Optus were giving him wrong details. He found the right ones -- they're all over Google

XDA Exec in Japan

Hi,
I hope someone can help
Just bought a XDA Exec so that can use it in japan to replace my M1000 which is a A1000 in disgise
At the moment I'm using DoCoMo but I'm getting some strange problems the phone takes ages to lock to the signal and sometimes wouldn't ring
I can't seem to get the internet to work with my M1000 setting
The only other 3G network is Vodaphone so i'm wondering if it would be any better than DoCoMo service and if anyone has managed to get the internet work on any one of these networks
Thanks
Rob :?[/b]
Hi, Tokyorob
I think DoCoMo is no suitable and improper for using Exec.
The standard of the cellular phone base stations are different between DoCoMo and others .
DoCoMo's base station named Release99, and the World standard one named Release4.
DoCoMo has also R4 station, but they are only 30 percent of all its stations, and 70 percent are R99.
All devices of DoCoMo are built as Suitable for R99 and R4 both.
M1000 is also that.
But HTC Universal is suitable only for R4.
That's why your Exec can not catch the wave of DoCoMo.
You'd better getting Vodafone USIM.
Regards
Thanks Shamilsh,
That's explains the drop outs
I did try out the Vodafone USIM and found it locked on faster but I still can't get the packet transfer to work
any ideas ?
Can I ask you something?
Hello Guys,
I dont mean to look silly but, as far as I know Japan networks are not GSM, they operate on CDMA, or am I mistaken?!
Thank you & have a great day all.
Tokyorob
You have two means to connect internet with your Exec.
One is UMTS Network of Vodafone KK.
Just you can set DialUp with your Exec setting Utility.
Select a modem: Callular Line(GPRS,3G)
Access Point Name: vodafone
User Name: [email protected]
Password: vodafone
And another is using bluetooth modem like as M1000.
Setting is same as M1000's one.
Regards
Thanks Shamilsh
Tried the config with my friends USIM and it worked..
What pricing package are you on ?
I was looking at the Dual Packet Flat-rate but told by my friend that it doesn't cover everything
Vodafone are less than helpful on the matter
Basically I want to be able to :-
Have the 3G connection on all the time
surf the web
run pocket msn/messager
do you think that will be covered ?
Thanks
Rob
Hi Rob
to use internet, you need to contract package "Happy Packet Super Plan"
or "Data Value Pack Plan".
But on "Data Value Pack", you can not make voice call.
with "Dual Packet Flat Plan", you will not be able to use MSN Meesenger nor E-mail nor Skype, because it is not real internet but it is WAP.
Very sorry but our situation around Mobile is very Inconvenience and non-flexible.
Shamilsh,
Many thanks
contracted to the "Happy Packet Super Plan" going to see what my monthly bill is going to be ..

WP7 mobile network (UK)

I put WP7 on my HD2 today and the automatic network it picks is T-Mobile UK but I'm with Virgin. I went to the settings to look for Virgin but it's not in the list. If I use it as T-Mobile, is that going to count as 'roaming'? A text and a call I made over an hour ago haven't shown up on my Virgin account's recent calls yet, so I'm going to assume this is the case (it's normally takes less than 30 minutes unless roaming).
Does anyone know how I can enable it for Virgin?
Yep, I'm having the same problems... I can' find a place where I can change the settings to put a manual network in place...
have you installed the connection setup xap??
it will configure the phone for your network and needs to be done with HD2's.
im on t-mobile but could not use 3g or internet data unless i ran the xap and it configured it. maybe it will sort your problem.
Virgin use T-mobile's phone masts, you won't be charged any roaming fees.

Just to let u guys know, I did the same, and 3g works, it also displays virgin media now.
To clarify things a bit. Some ROM''s don't display correctly the names ot virtual mobile operators like Virgin or Tesco in the UK or elsewhere in the world. Instead the phones display the name of the network that is actually used by the virtual operator. That shouldn't be a problem at all and involves no additional costs to the user
Thanks for all the advice. I checked this morning and the call and text came through uncharged, so it wasn't roaming. Unable to confirm whether the connection setup suggested works for me as I got impatient last night and wasn't too impressed with WP7 anyway, so decided to flash NANDroid (seeing as I now had the right HSPL and MAGLDR in place for WP7).
Thanks again.
hread moved to HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A and General
If your on Virgin Mobile you will need to change the APN settings under 'mobile network' in settings for Virgin mobile to get 3G and such

Use of Samsung Focus in UK?

I was wondering, if I was to order a SIM unlocked Samsung Focus from america (there are a few on ebay) would I have any problems using it in the UK?
As far as I can tell it has the same GSM bands as UK phones, but I am wondering why it wasnt launched in the UK?
I think you will have trouble configure MMS for use with your own network of choice (known issue and seems no solution so far). Also, it may or may not support the 3G frequency depending on which band your carrier uses (Focus only supports 2100Mhz band outside of US).
In UK, you should just order the Ominia 7. Same phone (and looks better than Focus, IMO) sans the SD card slot. But with the amount of trouble of getting any SD card to work reliably with Focus, you might jsut forget about it ever had a SD slot in the first place.
I ordered mine to Norway from ebay. Everything but MMS works perfect, and the MMS issue can be fixed with an app from the Samsung Zone in the Marketplace which allows you to change the settings that at&t have hidden away.
I got the Samsung Focus recently and I'm using it on Vodafone UK. I notice that sometimes despite the phone saying full 3G there's no connection and I have to reboot the phone to get a data connection. Anyone else had this?
I have an unlocked Focus too... for those that have successfully got the 3G to connect - what tarriffs are you on, and how did you get it setup??
Cheers
Samsung Focus in the UK
I have a Samsung Focus from Ebay. I have unlocked the phone from fastgsm which was instant and simple to do.
I have the internet and 3g working fine so far by simply adding the Vodafone APN settings in the menu. I haven;t tried mms messages but don;t really use them anyway but think they should work if you use the samsung app for configuring the phone fromt he store.
Just a quick comment. I can;t get the radio to pickup much. I have changed the region to International but I am still getting a terrible signal although I do get some stations they are quickly lost if you move at all. Any help?
^^ I have the same problem with the radio. Unlocked via FastGSM.
howdy. I've got an unlocked focus on vodafone pay as you go SIM; they can't seem to give me any APN etc settings that allows the internet to work. Do you mind me asking what you've entered into yours??
