chrushed shift! - Shift General

Hi All
Well something very bad just happened to my shift! In short it fell out a car door and got run over (Not the recommended way to compress files!!)(Sorry about the poor humour!)
Any way the LCD is smashed and it won’t load in to windows the hard drive wont work.
It does appear that win mob still works so I’m hoping to maybe get some data back some how
My question, does the vga port work in win mob yet?
any one got any thorts on how to recover the files on wm side?
( I know it its just about hopless but I thort i would try )

ouch that hurts... the best thing to do is to open the shift and take the HDD .. then use an adaptater to use it as external drive.
the VGA is no working and I guess it will never work from winmob... sorry

Since you want data from the WM side, but can't boot Vista as the hard drive does not work.... I would try to boot windows from an USB stick :
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-pocket,1113.html
or see google
http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=windows+on+usb
get external screen working on Windows Side (Via VGA), boot WM and hope USB tools will auto run and connect, copy files.

Some questions about the Shift

Hi all, i'm new to the shift scene and have a couple of questions:
1. I gather that the WM part of the device is an emulator running on Vista. Is there anyway to turn Vista off so its just WM that is running. (I guess not as the Shift has no WM capable hardware.)
2. Is there anyway to send SMS from the WM side? Can you send SMS from the Vista side?
3. Has anyone got TF3D running on it?
4. Comming from the Xperia X1 forum, there are loads of ROMs for the X1. Are there any WM6.1 ROMs out there for the Shift?.
5. Can you use a bluetooth headset with this device
6. How much does XP speed up the device? How much does Win7 slow down the device? Can you have XP or Win7 running WM?
7. Can you run TomTom on the WM side?
Many Thanks

1. You couldn't be more wrong. The WM side is actually a real smartphone built in to the shift mother board with it's own processor and all. WM is always on as long as there is power.

3. TF3D is to demanding on the WM hardware built in to the shift so a no can do there. You will have to be happy with point ui at best.

5. No, since bt is attached to the computer part and not the phone there is no bt on wm. You cannot use wired head set even. Actually the only way to make calls is using speaker phone. You have to remember it's a computer with wm, not a phone with vista.

7. Possible in theory impossible practically, we do not have the space avalible on the WM for maps. We cannot use SD since it's attched to the computer not the phone. It is possible to use the computer hdd but it requieres the computer part to be running and that will drain the battery.
The shift is NOT a phone, it's a special device in its own category. One should us it as a additional device not as a phone replacement.
use google maps
you can use google maps instead of tomtom.
Gmaps is another type of app. I's map app, tomtom is a navigator.
Yes you can browse maps on the shift, but no navigation.
Josasp, many thanks for your answers!

Im sure I saw in a video a guy was saying how the WM part is an emulation on windows. So you can have the Win XP part totally off and just have the phone on?

How much space is there on the WM side. You say we can use the WinXP hdd, so does that mean that the WM side can access the WinXP HDD? I would like to use TT navigator in my car, so there would be no probs with power. So people on here have got the GPS unit working then?
Last question, is it 3G? I will have a look myself now for this answer tho, I only just thought of it
ANSWER: Yes it does support 3G
This really is an intriguing device! If only you could make proper calls on it without it being on speakerphone!
Ofc you can SMS you have full wm fuctionality, the speakerphone issue is just that the shift is missing a earpice and access to headset, so it leaves the speakerphone the only option.
I'ts not only 3G it is also HSDPA wich is fater then regular 3G, but notice that there is a CDMA version avalible to that is NOT 3G.
Well the WM part is linked to the computer(vista) in two ways, the first is some sort of internal usb connection that we can turn on and off using "usb tool".
The other way is that the WM and Vista is linked i an internal local network (LAN) that allows vista to connect to the internet using WM as a router an modem, much like a regular home lan.
The fact that they are linked via lan allows for us to use shared folders between the devices in the device, i't works in the same way you share folders over a home network.
Using this shared folders feature we can use the Vista hdd but ONLY when the computer part is on. So there is no direct connection betweed the vista hdd and WM only the virtual share.
I't works but it drains battery and it's slightly buggy, it's not really a great solution.
What would be way better in your case is sharing the GPS module over the internal usb to vista. That is a lot less data and is way more stable.
There is some good navigation software for regular computers too, garmin has a software similar to thier WM software.
A solotion like that looks a lot more stable if you ask me.
Couple more questions:
1)So the GPS module is 'natively' attached to the WM side but you can access it from the WinXP side?
2)Can you confirm if you can send texts from the WinXP side, what program do you use to do it?
3)Can you confirm if you can have the WinXP side totally off and just run the WM side?
4)There are some people on ebay sellling wired headsets for the shift, but you say they dont work...i dont understand! are these seller lying???
5)When the screen is flipped up and your on the WM side, does it go into landspace view?
6)Can you use the hardware keyboard on the WM side?
7)Can you use the trackpad on the WM side?
1. Yes with custom rom like almost everything.
2. Text is sent from WM side perfectly no need for sending from visa/xp/whatever.
3. Well WM is always on as long as the battery is in, vista/xp you turn on/off with a switch.
4. They work only on the pc/vista/xp side for msn/skype/other not in the WM side.
5. The WM side is always in landcape, it is possible to rotate manually in the WM side if you want portrait but no auto switching.
6. Yes, it works very well.
7. Nope it's connected to the PC.
You have to think of the shift as two devices regardless of the fact that they do not appear so. Think of the shift as a laptop connected to phone with usb and lan. When you press the snapvue button the keyboard and the screen will switch between these devices, so it appears that they are the same device.
What does this mean?
Well it means that some things we will never get since they are only connected to pc, like true hdd access or touchpad access.
Some thing we however manage to get working in one of two ways, the first is by using some secret way that htc built in the device but decided not no use like the phone, the other way is by using some sort of software for wm or the pc to send stuff over the lan or usb between the wm and the pc, like sharing GPS or the hdd.
But using some software share requieres both sides to be on and that will drain battery, and attery is the main reason we want to use the wm side instead of the pc. If the pc would last as long as the wm we would not use the wm at all. So having the pc on in order to do some stuff in the wm sort of defeats the purpose of using the wm.
The mouse pad is for the PC side, but if you have the PC side running and connected to the WM side via the program USBTool, then it is possible to control WM with the mouse pad/mouse with a program that has been mentioned in these forums before. I have forgotten its name

I have remembered the name of this application that allows you to use the mouse and mouse pad in WM whilstVista/XP side is on. It's called trueconnect. It works very well.

please help cant attach to win mob

Hi all,
About a month ago I started to have a problem attaching to win mob. I thort it was because the evaluation copy of win 7 was ending. I finally got enough cash to by a copy of win7 home premium which I installed now I cant get the touch screen to work on win 7 side and win mob still won’t attach I have gone through heaps of threads but nothing seem to work. When using the USB tool it sound like it connects but win7 doesn’t pick any thing up at all.
Can anyone help?
I don't think Win 7 Home comes with the Windows Mobile Device Centre (the replacement for activesync) so you need to install that before Win7 can see the WinMo side.
Hope that helps

Plz! See this thread! USB LOOSE CONNECTION!

OK! I have got 2 pcs win 7 and win XP! I have an ANDROID PHONE!
I have an XPERIA X10i.
This thread is important because many haven't noticed this problem or even bothered,I am about to share! many people with xperia x10i and other android phones face this problem!
THIS PROBLEM IS ABOUT LOOSE CONNECTION between Android phones and windows 7 pc!
WHY the **** I AM HAVING USB LOOSE CONNECTION?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
My phone has android 2.1 rom which i sony's original one!
I have rooted the phone now!
(I had changed roms many time android 2.2,2.3.....)
It seems that there is a bit incompatibility between android OS and windows 7!
The problem is that the usb drivers of android 2.1 and 2.2 is incompatible with windows 7!
When ever i connect my x10i with my pc by usb the connection goes loosen!
repeatedly notification shows Mount and unmount! Which is very annoying! VER.......VERY......ANNOYING!
I tried many stuff..I searched google.....windows forums..coustomer supports....! But I assure u people this is windows 7's problem!
sometimes my usb get connected but chance is 2% out of100%!
I herd there is a problem with SEMC_HSUSB(Sony Ericsson sa0101)
but android 2.1 worked fine for me on windows 7!
whereas my windows xp works fine with my x10!
I checked if my windows 7 has any problem in usb ports or software setting, but turned out to be just fine!
I searched google,in google some said x10i,galxy S,moto Droid also had loose connection in usb connection!
even my usb plug is fine!
there are few win7 which makes android run smoothly and some don't!
Well I am the one with not working one!
Can anyone help me out here!
is this a Kernel problem?
my windows xp and wndows 7 are genuine(original version) and also they r fully updated!
I need help!
have you ever thought it maybe a problem with something else??
i have connected my x10 with 1.6, 2.1 and about 4 different custom ROMS (again 2.1 or 2.2)...all connect perfect with all my pc's and laptops running win 7 ultimate (64bit) and win xp
try a different usb port / computer / cable
Also check your usb on the phone...it maybe loose
Have you tried it on a win xp machine??
I tried different ports but its problem with the software of kernel or any reason that i don't kno!
there could be a number of reasons...technology is wonderful when working....but a pain when its not!!
sounds like something might be conflicting but not showing as a conflict
If you plug other things in the same computer ports and they work ok then all i can suggest (and its drastic) is to reinstall windows and start fresh. That will get rid of any old corrupt files and software and you will probably find it will work.
I have never found anyone stating a problem with SE and windows
Have you ever though that you might have a faulty phone? Just call your carrier or se to see what they can do for you its an hardware issue. Lets hope all this will get sorted out for.you

Go to Windows energy conservation settings and turn off power saving for every USB port that You have in Your PC. (set it to always on or something like that)
Problem solved Good luck !
I checked the phone! but turned out to be fine!
I tested on my friend's win7 which made it work smoothly!
THERE IS NO HARDWARE ISSUE! THIS IS SURE TO BE A SOFTWARE STUFF!

Worked on friends win 7 which it worked
which boils down to the problem being on your pc
You can spend hours and hours trying to find the conflict or the problem why its not working or as said previously, format the pc, reinstall a fresh version of windows and should be ok (providing the USB ports on your pc work ok)
LOL! I have a 7TB HDD LOL!
LOL IF U TELL ME TO REINSTALL MY PC THAT WOULD BE EPIC ****!
can anyone give me a driver! lol any help out there?
LOL!
I have the same issue with my work computer but not my home computer. Not sure what the reason is but it's definitely annoying. Work computer has Vista, my home computer runs 7. I have two X10's and my work computer has never liked either one. For some reason it only happens when I am running the SE's 2.1.
Definitely sucks. I would attribute it to 2.1 and some computers. Luckily once connected to flash tool all is good and it doesn't disconnect while flashing.
its not as simple as giving you a driver...you need to find why its not working. When you plub in the usb it should install the driver.
If you dont wanna format then all i can suggest is uninstall the sony driver and hope when you install it next time it works
failing that i think you have 2 possibilities....
1> Hope that the 7tb hdd is partitioned!!
or
2> Stay good mates with your friend!!
Thats all i can suggest
Good luck...think you will need it!!
PLZ ANYONE HELP!but why does this software conflict happens!
Well I ran the troubleshooter(windows device compability) and it showed a problem of compatibility!
This usb is so sensitive if i even move the mobile 1 mm it will disconnect or just popup "MOUNT PHONE" AND "UNMOUNT PHONE" This is very much annoying!
well this ain't hardware problem but then why loose connection????
It is surely software problem but is it possible that software can make USB ports superduper sensetive???????
LOL! I can reinstall phone but I tried but not working!
I can also reinstall WIN 7 but lol I can't its a huge weight lol! LOL I have 7TB HDD and lol I have many thing in it!so i can't jsut reinstall!
So can anyone give me sony xperia x10i usb driver????THIS IS BLOODY SOFTWARE BUG!!!!
Though 1 weird thing I forgot to mention! The Weird thing is that FLASH TOOL,sony ericssion update, root kit tool and etc rooting software works and don't show any loose connection!
So I checked my SD CARD but SD card is fine! So....wat is it? Is it USB PORT SPEED stuff or software conflict??
but this problem is mainly seen in win7 so i guess win7 hates android! But why would people suddenly face this problem!
Yes before 1 month everything worked fine!but for this month my days r ****ed up!
I think the KERNEL OF ANDROID or WIN7's usb drive for android phones have some bugs!
well problem needs to be dected then lol we can find cure!
(I copy files from PC to my mobile very luckyly lol! sometims try to reconnect it 30 times repeatedly works though if I move the phone a bit it just get disconnected!
OK! so how about we get c\windows\system32\winusb.sys from win xp and put it iin win 7! lol I don't know wat could happen lol! but its a try but its lol risky!
this is usb setting for xp lol! but I don't kno if win7 and xp has same versio of USB dlls!
It's definitely not Windows 7 that's giving it issues. Sorry to say but it's the computer. I'm not sure why it happens but it happens to my work computer running Vista but not my windows 7 home laptop. Don't know if there is a fix though. But as long as flash tool works who cares right? Mounting works fine when you mount it right? It's just the beginning issue when it disconnects, but once connected you should be good.
Hey do u have PC companion installed? And check to see you have USB debugging enabled. My phone did the same thing. I fixed it by enabling USB debug

try a different cable on that machine.
dont try both suggestions together.. lol try the live cd, and if that works, reboot in w7 and try a different cable. I've had issues where it connects on the data side but doesn't charge out of my laptop..

ALMOST Ready to sell my Shift .. maybe ...

PLEASE DON'T THINK OF THIS AS A FOR SALE AD .. It is not .. Too many things I need to re-discover before listing.
I am in the final stages of getting ready to sell my HTC Shift. Maybe. I don't even know what to ask. It is at my office so I don't remember ALL the details. PLUS I see that people are installing Windows 8 on theirs and MAYBE I might want to try that before selling mine. I have the Windows 8 from the Developers convention Samsung Tablet and I like it .. Like it a lot !!
I guess I have come here to ask what a fair price would be for mine and should I try to install the Windows 8?? Or is that still very touch and go with the drivers etc.
It has Full windows mobile w/ the added telephone capability. Another worry. If I reformat or upgrade will I lose the telephone? I use T-Mobile and my connection is Edge. I don't know what you get with an AT&T sim card.
It is the model with the permanent case that screws on. I have taken it off because I also have the Mugen Extended Battery and the case didn't fit well with that battery on .. I still have the original battery and the screw on case as well. I don't know how long either battery is holding a charge. I don't think the life is very bad.
The Shift has also had the drive upgraded. I am thinking it is maybe 100 gigs. But I could be wrong .. something else to check.
I have upgraded the O/S to Vista or maybe Windows 7 ...See .. I can't even say for sure what operating system is installed. I haven't turned it on in months.
I am thinking that when I reformat I will MAYBE lose all the drivers etc so I may as well try installing Windows 8 .. or not . ... Maybe if and when someone buys it they will want it the way it is and they can reformat or whatever ..
Any comments on the pros or cons of Windows 8?? I am really lost .. I just know I have too many computers and too many gadgets and some of them need to go away !! Mostly I don't want my data left on the computer but I don't want the hassle of refomatting and then trying to install drivers etc. I can hardly find time to gather the necessary info and list it ..

What is wrong with you!!!!
Dear Buddy, The HTC X9500 Shift is a umpc or/and tablet!!! (Ultimate Mobile Personal Computer)This Device rocks!!!! step 1: did you custom the wm side. Step 2: did you split the partition for windows xp and windows 7 ultimate??? did you upgrade the rams to 2gb ram???
did you upgrade the hdd to at least 100gb if you did this all you shift is on fire!!!!!! speed on the internet is good!!! wifi is strong, bluetooth is strong! touch screen with a pen or fingers is good!!! allow's to a plasma or lcd monitor is good!!!! (VGA Connectors)
So what else you asking for a sam**** tablet.
Plus do you know the the ubuntu works excellent with the HTC X9500 shift???? hmmmm....
>> did you custom the wm side.
YES .. It is FULL Windows Mobile and Phone.
>> did you split the partition for windows xp and windows 7 ultimate???
NO .. Just upgraded XP to either Vista or 7 .. don't remember which
>> did you upgrade the rams to 2gb ram???
No .. Don't remember if the ram has been upgraded. I didn't work on it myself most of the time a friend did.
>> did you upgrade the hdd to at least 100gb
YES ...
>> touch screen with a pen or fingers is good!!!
Samsung Tablet (Slate) works with finger or Wacom stylus
>> Plus do you know the the ubuntu works excellent with the HTC X9500 shift???? hmmmm....
What's an ubuntu ???
Will I guess you are a average computer geek....
because Ubuntu is a linux O.S that is much more secured then windows.. Plus it is much faster then windows... Plus again, Ubuntu is the maker of android, who created it for a free open source!!!!
Just stumbled on this thread as I found my Shift at the back of a cupboard a few days ago and was wondering what it was worth. I've flashed the WM side but the other side is still Vista (ugh).
More toys to play with. Hoorah!
I want a Shift so much.... Any ideas on sales? (Mods dont kill me)
1saleaday has it for 199.99 today only...
The Shift Continues to impress me.
I re ghosted a fresh Windows 7 installation to get better performance out of it.
I just installed Ubunuti Wubi and linked it to my smartphone bluetooth modem for wireless internet.
And the WM side gives me an instant notepad with a decent keyboard.
Combined with a smartphone, it's a winner all round.

HTC Shift X9500 (Help Installing Windows XP)

I just picked up a HTC Shift X9500 for the kids to play around on (instead of messing with my laptop )
Anyway, Vista sucks obviously, so I want to install Windows XP on this thing. I got windows installed ok. Installed all the drivers. However, here is the issue I'm having. If I DO NOT install the Video drivers, the WiFi adapter works & connects. I install the video drivers & the desktop looks nice, but then the Wifi doesn't work. Just shows as "Unknown Device" in the Device MGR. I can go back into the Device MGR & uninstall the video drivers & restart the system. Then BANG...the wifi is operational again. So, I'm not sure if I got a bad wifi driver or incorrect video drivers. Does ANYONE have all the drivers for this device (Using XP that is..)
It seems to run A LOT faster using XP over Vista. I know the device is old & very outdated, but it would be cool for the kids if I can get it working. There are instructions on this forum to install XP step by step but the links are dead & I can't follow the process. Anyone help??
Hmm thats weird. I use windows 7 on it. Also alot faster than vista.
Wifi is still not working with me. But when i installed the videocard driver. None of my games would boot. So i un installed it. And i can play every game that can run on this old hardware. Seems to me the video driver isnt the best one written.
was it hard to get xp? I may try to dual boot to see wich seems faster with the games

It’s 2021 … is anyone still playing with the shift? I guess my battery is completely dead or there is another problem because even plugged in it won’t come to life. Maybe my charger is t working.. any suggestions? Should I just put the shift in the trash?

shift batteries are good, mine is from 2008 and still perfect
maybe your htc is fully discharged, that is normal because snapvue drink the battery when the pc is off, mine wasnt used in almost an year, it wouldnt turn on, but put it charhing and start to charge...
Ecxelent on shift is that can run without battery on external power. Both WM and PC. New phone can give to trash if battery is death.
hello! does anybody here have the xp drivers for the vista? i succesfully installed it but i'm missing the drivers, can somebody send them to me?
