Hello here,
very strange thing happened tonight:
in the morning I have found that my Android Dev Phone 1 (updated to Android 1.5/Cupcake few days ago) has downloaded and installed at least 20 (rather more) applications! Most ot them were alreday installed on the phone, so they were now either upgraded or - in most cases - just updated = installed once again. Some of them I have just tried long time ago (back in December/January) and then removed them. Tonight they were downloaded and installed once again.
It looks like the phone, for some strange reason, has tried to download and (re)install all applications which were ever installed.
The whole download+insallation process was still ongoing: there were 2 active downloads and also a warning about running out of memory space. I have cancelled these two downloads.
NetCounter says that around 20 MB of data were downloaded in the night.
aTrackDog has lost all info about installed applications: they are (74 pcs) all now marked as freshly installed and their version numbers aren't verified.
Yesterday I did really nothing special: just checked my emails, visited some web pages, and went to bed. The phone was "sleeping" too (I thought).
Any idea what could be the reason for this strange behaviour?
ADDITION: I have found out that OLD versions of those applications were installed tonight, so most of the already installed programs were actually DOWNGRADED tonight!
Now I have 13 applications with "Update available" under "My downloads" in the Market. 8 or 9 of them I had tried several weeks or months ago and then uninstalled. Now I've got these old versions again. Remaining 4 or 5 were downgraded.

Well... out of the 264 apps that I have on my G1 only about 8 said that there was an update available. Everything else works and acts the same. Of those 8 that had an update available Weatherbug was one of them and they added the option to change the text color in the status bar (which is definitly a new feature) thus it was an actual update. So are you suggesting that the 256 apps were instantly downgraded to a earlier version? Could you imagine how much broadband that would require assuming that each one is at LEAST 100kb and could be at the most 6mb in size? Just 100kb x 264 apps =26400kb (26 MB) minimum. I don't think my G1 used that much without my knowledge.
I just think that the majority of your apps had an update.
I'm only suggesting that *MY* (not every, indeed) ADP1 without my knowledge has re-downloaded and re-installed most of the applications I've ever used before. Some of them were installed again (after they were removed long time ago), same downgraded. One of these downgraded applications had the last update on January 15th, so tonight I've got a version which is at least 110 days old!
it has happed to me twice the past couple of nights, it downloads and installs like 20 or 25 apps that i had previously uninstalled like 3 days before. very strange, it didnt happened last night...so i have no clue as to why...i havent seen a reason or solution...
i just rooted and installed jf1.5 last saturday, maybe that had something to do with it
Thank you for the confirmation!
Yes, I also think that this is some strange bug of v1.5.
I use my ADP1 since December and got this problem for the first time yesterday, few days after cupcake upgrade.
What the f$%&#?!....
I went to luch one hour ago and when I came back my ADP1 has already downloaded and installed 10 applications, two installations were failed (because of low memory) and 6 further downloads were ongoing. Again over 20 MB of traffic used without my permission within short time, and again several old applications re-installed and few others downgraded.
It must be a serious bug!!
This has happened to me multiple times in the past few days (only had the G1 about a week), ever since I rooted (though I rooted within a day or two, so that might not mean anything).
I've run JF RC33, plus all the Cupcake builds (Dude, Haykuro, JF..) and I think I've run into this under each of them. Usually shortly after I flash a new one. My theory has been that the Market thinks I still have the apps installed but doesn't see the version info (since the app was wiped) so it downloads an "update." Not certain, though.
On my G1 I have never seen an update from the market get automatically downloaded. I get a notification that updates are available but I have to trigger the update manually. Is there a setting somewhere for this?
Well i runs official 1.5 for ADP and i havnt had the problem (yet) - so i guess its not a bug in official software
//M
that has been happening to me too
i will wake up and my notifications will say that an application has been installed
then it will say updates are available
wierd

I have an official ADP1 with official Cupcake upgrade; no modifications. So it must be sobe bug in the official Android 1.5 build.
Today it happened again, for the 3rd time in 5 days. Again over 30 applications re-installed, 20+ MB of traffic used. Weired!!
I had this happen, but only with 1 app, and only 2 times (once on TheDude's cupcake and once on JF's) and it never happened again...so I dunno.

Hi
I have g1 with rc30 and jf (i dont remember the version). I installed on my phone netmeter and after 12h of sleeping my g1 downloaded 100mb by it self.
Is there any app that will show which program download so much stuff?
tuen off Auto-Sync in your settings Home>Menu>Settings>Data syncronization>tuen off different things to use less data
I don't thing it's Auto-Sync ... I haven't turned off my G1 for about 2 Weeks now and its alway online and my Netmeter just says something about 100MB ...
so, I think it must be one special program, but which one it is ... sry, don't now ...
I use app that os caled APNdroid
It cuts of GPRS UMTS 3G/2G conection when you press it and do not allow you G1 to go to internet via carrier of you SIM.
You press it agin and it goes back to normal.
It's good becase U can still have SYNC activate3d all the time.
Yeap, it will disconnect you, but when you go back online then it resume downloads .. so this just delay download a bit but not solve the issuse.
Do you have root access, and terminal? Then you can use the 'dh' and 'du' commando to view wich dirs/files are the biggest. maybe you can find a dir that grows larger every hour, then you have to find out wich program uses that dir (or maybe it's just the dirname ).
Hope you find it!

100mb in just 12 hours? Wow!
Let's see... assuming it was an exact 100mb (which I'm sure it's not but just for fun)
8533kb /hr
142kb /min
2.37kb /sec
So I guess the question is... is it unreasonable for your G1 to download about 2.5kb a second? This phone has been very problamatic for users going over seas because they would return home to find a several hundred dollar bill in the mail for roaming data fees Example. I can see how. I must say that I'm a bit curious myself now. I think I'll install the program on my phone to see what I get.
I admit that it does sound like a lot but when you break it down you can't really be too surprised. Especially when you consider that even while your phone is sleeping you could be receiving pings which is 32 bytes each. I'm not sure how many times the G1 sends a ping but I suppose it could add up during 12 hours. Also, it doesn't help if you have IM and other apps in the background. Some of which you don't (or may not) even realize. Latitude is not something that you use very often but if you set it up then it sends updates to Google of your location. If you receive an e-mail in the 12 hours of inactivity. The market is frequently checking for updates to some of the apps that you have stored. Then just a few apps that I personally have installed but not running actively are the JF Updater beta, Locale, Loopt, a RSS app, weatherbug, an android tracking app, IM, caller id app, Earthquake!, just to name a few. Would it be unreasonable for my phone to use 2.5kb a second?
I'll install it myself and let you know tomorrow morning. I'm not in a 3G area right now but I'm curious to see how much I use myself. If it's less then you then I think you might have a problem because I'm a heavy user.
UPDATE
So in just 4 hours with my phone doing absolutely nothing and with Netmeter installed my phone has downloaded exactly 200kb. However this is on an Edge network.
I'm starting to think that you may have a problem. Because obviously at this rate I would have only downloaded 600kb during 12 hours which is no where near what you have experienced. I am not running anything at all in the background except the normal RC33 apps, Craigslist, Where's My Android, Netmeeter, Quick Calender, Missed Call, Weatherbug (all of this came from Task Manager). On Netmeeter it reads that locale is also running but only contributes to .2% of network traffic. 32.8% is from "system_server" and 16.5% is from com.google.android.netmeter.
Bottom line... something is not right with your phone. Perhaps it is downloading an update of some kind?
its end of the day and i have 200 downloaded.
the problem is only with 3g network. when my wifi is turned on it doesnt downloading so much stuff.
I deleted all apps that i installed only netmeter is on the phone now.
we will see
apndroid works changing the apn settings of the phone making it impossible to the phone to establish any new conection through 3g/2g until you let it. So you will be ok with it.
xsoft = noob!
I just had the same problem in the last two days, with RC8-JF. Downloaded 300MB for no apparent reason.
I found out that gapps is constantly downloading a 20MB update from google. It tried to apply it after downloading, fails due to missing otrcerts (because JF has removed it to prevent the update), and retries the whole download.
I suggest you run tcpdump on the phone and see if that's the case with your phone too. If yes, updating to the latest JF version should stop it. Otherwise it's hard to block these downloads. The gapps process does a lot of other things with google's servers so you can't just filter it through iptables.
I had the samme problem, my phone would not stop downloading, every couble of hours it would download about 20mb.
The solution was to update to the new JF 1.43 RC9, I used JF 1.41 RC8 before.
I updated my g1 to rc33 and all is ok
This is a thread that could become irrelevant at any time with the release of a new firmware, but..
In people's experience, which if these firmwares is faster, more stable, and less laggy?
I have a Galaxy that I upgraded to JM2, but I'm not playing around with it much as it's a present for somebody - I just wanted to have it up to date when I give it to them.
So I haven't seen the difference in daily usage. Any thoughts?
On just playing around on the home scree, adding and removing widgets, they both seem pretty fast.
Thanks guys
I've not really benchmarked the different roms to be honest, but I have JM2 and have noticed that the phone lags a little when opening, closing and working within various apps.
3Banana notes is quick for me, whereas Seesmic lags when I hit 'compose' for a new tweet. The default media player is pretty snappy opening, as is the market, but other apps are slow...
Not sure whether it's a phone thing, a rom thing or an app thing.
i flashed from JF3 stock to JM2 and notice its a little quicker in day to day activitys but i still get the app lag when opening certain apps like mentioned above.
I think no firmware so far in entirely lag-free! You DO need the sdcard fix!

I don't apply any of the firmware updates, but just SD card fix. Rarely notice big lagging now.
For me, JM2 gives me the best performance. I'll give it a day or 2 to see if I even need the sd card fix.
I ran the Quadrant Standard bench on JM1 and JM2. While the JM1 got a 940 result the JM2 gets only 880 points, and it sims a little slower than the JM1. Even the accelerometer turns the image after a longer period. Both have a very good memory management, sometimes I get 270 MB free out of 326MB, and it stays in the range without the need of a reset after a long period of use.
I have heard the card fix really works...but the process seems very complicated to me. Perhaps I'm just a numbskull, but I dont understand how to do it...
...I dont want to do stuff that will brick the phone, unless I really know what I'm doing?

I think you have the memory bit wrong - it's showing 270MB USED out of 326MB (at least for me... I've never seen it dip below the 200s.
I just upgraded from XWJG5 to XWJM2. Good thing I ran Titanium Backup first! I didn't realize the flash would wipe all of my data. So far so good.
If you use a kill application the best I have seen so far is around 93MB free as Task Manager restarts by default.
The built in kill application on JM2 only kills battery hog applications which are running not the run of the mill applications running in the background.
Yes, I did notice the native Task Manager.
I have noticed with this firmware that the MarketEnabler is not working. I can't download some of my paid apps.

Use Eris Market fix from the market
Sent using Samsung Galaxy S
I wish it were so easy. I have never had success with Eris. I have had success with MarketEnabler, but the latest version may need an update to work with the latest firmware. Very frustrating though. Fortunately for me before I did the firmware upgrade I used Titanium Backup. Had I not I would have no Slingplayer or other paid apps on the SGS right now.
Back to Eris, I installed it last night well before midnight, cleared the cache, did the reboot and waited until this morning it being a new day, and still no luck.
Hi All,
So I updated from JG5 to XM1 then XM2. Moving from JG5 to XM1 was very laggy and seemed that XM1 might have been on the Alpha release level, it was good but too buggy.
I then upgraded to XM2 from XM1 and found significant improvements. Then I started to notice things that would normally work would not. The GPS didn't work, the market didn't work, titanium back up, kept getting interrupted during restore even when using after a clean reboot. Browsing through the phone was generally slower and menus would take a while to load.
XM2 seems great on first boot, but after you start loading some of your apps in and customize it to work the way you want it to, then you have problems.
I went back to JG5 as it is far more stable and reliable. I might wait till Froyo before I flash again, i've probably done 12 different flashes in the past 2 weeks.
Let me know if anyone has had better luck with XM2.
on my part.. i can say that JG5 is still the fastest and operates more stable than JM2 at stock settings no rooting done.
installed samset 1.6 and seemed to get abit slower in opening applications..
..will go back to JG5 for now.. hehehe
|| disclaimer: other users may experience differently. ^_^ ||
Im wondering why the phone is reporting more than 256MB usable since the current kernel version only allows upto 256MB
I found JG5 more stable whereas I have encountered few issues with JM2, market behaves strangly installed apps not showing status installed. More bugs in JM2, more lagging and apps taking longer to load like sky news i think I will go back to JG5.
JG5 is an official firmware? I mean App market will work without Eris Fix ?
Thanks !
Is JG5 an official firmware on which App Market is working without Eris fix ?
Thanks !
Hi,
I've searched this forum and google for this problem but couldn't get an answer so far. My Legend isn't rooted and I'm using 2.05.405.2. Always after about 2 days my phone gets really laggy. For example pulling down statusbar can take up to 20 seconds until it reacts. Also when I get an incoming call, picking up can last up to 10 seconds. The only way to resolvethis so far is to reboot the phone, but thats exactly what I don't want. I tried several taskkillers without success, I then tried without any taskkillers, too. Also same behaviour. I just have a few apps installed:
- JuiceDefender
- Opera
- ES File Explorer
- MixZing
- Handcent
- Facebook
- SystemPanel Lite
- K9
I tried to get into SystemPanelLite when the phone gets laggy to see what process this is causing, but without any success. I'm really puzzled as I don't understand, why the system is getting laggy up to an unusable amount. I'm not a poweruser who is playing around every 5 minutes with his phone, just writing and reading some SMS, taking a look at facebook and reading and writing mails. Is this a common problem with the legend and everybody is used to it or is this a problem that only hits me for whatever reason? Oh, yes, the problem also existed with older firmware, too.
No such problem in my legend
My legend is very smooth
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
same here. No such problem in my Legend, it is too smooth.
Legend is known to be a snappy handset.
How much free memory do you have ?
Did you try uninstalling any third party apps to see if any of that is causing the trouble?
Thanks for the answers. I uninstalled now k9, JuiceDefender and ES File Manager, as these are the only one, that I have installed always from the beginning. I'll report back, if that helped.
have you got the facebook contacts bug where you've got about 50,000 duplicated contacts?

No, facebook runs just fine with contact-synchronisation and all.

It happened even to me during the first start-up. I decided to reset completely the phone and make a clean start-up. I believe you should very carefully during the first sync of gmail, facebook, etc. Leave the time to the Legend to sync properly and install one application behind the other.
After that my Legend is working fine
As I upgraded to the first 2.xxx firmware, I had it resettet to defaults, as I did the upgrade via USB. As far as I remember, synchronisation was done when I began to install apps. But I think, if the deinstallation of the mentioned applications doesn't resolve this issue, I will try to reset it, too...
I had similar behavior, when installing that Facebook update last week. Besides the published battery drain the phone became laggy and unresponsive. The dialer sometimes took 10 seconds to react! Sometimes I could not even take a call. The patch that came after to improve the battery drain didn't fix the lag issue for me.
So I uninstalled the complete facebook update via application menu and voila! No more lag. Everything is as snappy as before. Not even a reboot was required.
I just uninstalled the fb updates out of interest and my Legend was much quicker! Reinstalling the updates and it's still quick. I didn't notice the slowdown before. Thanks!
After uninstalling k9, JuiceDefender, ES File Manager and facebook updates along with disabling facebook for android, so that there is only facebook for sense there, these are the results after 2 days so far:
- phone is snappy as if it was turned on 5 minutes ago
- battery-life is much better! Without JuiceDefender it was about 8-10 hours with very slight usage, up to 36 hours with JuiceDefender... today, after over 42 hours my battery is at 32%, I played games, wrote some SMS, took some pictures and had a short call
So it has to be one of the above mentioned apps. From what I read up until now, my closest bet is the facebok-app, that could be interfering with facebook for sense. I will now reinstall k9, JuiceDefender an ES File Manager and report back again in about 2 days.
Edit: It seems to be that k9 is the reason for the lags... just some minutes after installing and configuring k9 I noticed some lag with scrolling in lists, uninstalled it again and the lag was gone...
Update:
I installed the updates for FB again and I'm using it as before. The phone is still very snappy, no sign of slowdowns. Next I will test JuiceDefender.
After testing a lot with uninstalling all apps and then step by step reinstalling I found the problem: It seems that JuiceDefender triggered for whatever reason the lag after about 2 days. At the moment I also don't have a need to reinstall it, as from my testings I found out, that my battery lasts for 2 days without JuiceDefender, with JuiceDefender it was just 4-5 hours more. This is with fb-updates hourly, gps always on, 2 IMAP-Accounts that are qurried via push, some sms a day and about half an hour telephone, slight internet browsing.
Glad to hear your phone is running better. As a side note, I still use Juice Defender but an old version 1.7.7 The development seemed to go off the rails after this version and i was not happy with any other the updates so I am sticking with this older version.
Still get about 2x the battery life using it.
I also having same problem and available free memory keeps on reducing . Though i installed juicedefender, i never uses that and kill using system panel. Will uninstall and check for 2 days
just out of curiosity
I wonder if those freezing and rebooting several times a week are on the stock rom or urkdroid...
stock for me
Brand new running stock rom and it freezes a few times a day - Archos 43.
With my Archos 70 Internet Tablet 250GB, I've found that when it freezes, if I leave the Archos alone, it will come back to life. Sometimes takes 5-10 minutes.
I'm guessing the problem is probably software related ... I'm in the process of checking out many apps (I have over 600 apps downloaded so far!).
I've had to uninstall several, but haven't figured out how to delete them ....
standard firmware with latest update.
archos 101. 16gb
using Zeam.
very few crashes or lockups, but it does randomly reboot by itself sometimes, usually while in standby.

600 apps? WHAT/WHY?! Did you install Voice Search? It rendered my device pretty useless. Took me like 15 minutes just to get to the point where I could uninstall it. Not much freezing/crashing after that.

Ya, Voice search seems to be very problematic on my 43 also, I should probably try uninstalling it and seeing if I see any improvement in stability.
Hacking in the market is known to cause stability issues. I have no problems with my A70 without market and GApps.
Few times a day. Stock firmware w Google.
Never with Ukudroid and swap activated... but I I've wifi problem with this
101 8gb on froyo, using zeam launcher. overdrive set of course, and I have gapps installed. locks up hardly at all.
I have urukdroid 4.2 installed as well, That seems to lock up more than it does on stock.

Hello,
I have a stock Moto X force for about 20 months.
I've been suffering from lagging lately (sometimes it takes a few seconds when trying to switch between apps or the keyboard becomes unresponsive). I think it got worse after the 7.0 update.
I've downloaded an app for system monitoring and I've noticed that at times of lag the internal disk activity is maxed (Read & Write are 100% (not sure exactly what that means)) (Can't add attachments). But, cpu performance and ram usage seems fine. I assume some app is causing this but have no suspects at the moment. How should I continue my debug from here ?
Thanks
Hello Juvesss,
Exactly the same phone with the same problem since one week ago... If you solved it please explain me, this is a pain!
No OS upgrade was involved in my case, I have Nougat since a long ago.
Cache wipe did not help. Limiting background processes to 3 helped just a little (developer menu).

I've been noticing this problem too.
Not sure what the cause is.
I've factory reset and that seems to fix the problem for awhile, but it seems to come back over time.
Something in the stock rom must be cluttering the phone.
Dear roweboat56,
It happened to me after 12 months of having it, so for my experience it is not so frequent. How often happened it to you? (To understand better how long will I "enjoy" the factory reset solution...)
Move to a custom rom!
I faced that issue too! The last update was buggy maybe..and the moto services and rest apps by moto are eating a lot of ram and using a good amount of I/O
.
Try this rom by me (on the latest 7.1.2 build with 5th February 2018 security patch)

No heating at all!

Hm I noticed after maybe 2 months of use or so?
Im on Latest Stock FW Android N ,using the device since 8months and not find any lag, in my case it lacks a bit when heated a lot.
I didnt disable any of the Moto Services though.
Try using Greenify if it solves the issue. I will not unlock my phone till it gets 14-15month old and see whether the same happens to me
It is strange... In my case the phenomenon suddenly disappeared some weeks ago, so I think some system update messed it all and later another update solved it. I have the impression it was a system problem and not a particular app, because I tried to uninstall the more suspicious apps without appreciating any change.
