This is a thread that could become irrelevant at any time with the release of a new firmware, but..
In people's experience, which if these firmwares is faster, more stable, and less laggy?
I have a Galaxy that I upgraded to JM2, but I'm not playing around with it much as it's a present for somebody - I just wanted to have it up to date when I give it to them.
So I haven't seen the difference in daily usage. Any thoughts?
On just playing around on the home scree, adding and removing widgets, they both seem pretty fast.
Thanks guys
I've not really benchmarked the different roms to be honest, but I have JM2 and have noticed that the phone lags a little when opening, closing and working within various apps.
3Banana notes is quick for me, whereas Seesmic lags when I hit 'compose' for a new tweet. The default media player is pretty snappy opening, as is the market, but other apps are slow...
Not sure whether it's a phone thing, a rom thing or an app thing.
i flashed from JF3 stock to JM2 and notice its a little quicker in day to day activitys but i still get the app lag when opening certain apps like mentioned above.
I think no firmware so far in entirely lag-free! You DO need the sdcard fix!

I don't apply any of the firmware updates, but just SD card fix. Rarely notice big lagging now.
For me, JM2 gives me the best performance. I'll give it a day or 2 to see if I even need the sd card fix.
I ran the Quadrant Standard bench on JM1 and JM2. While the JM1 got a 940 result the JM2 gets only 880 points, and it sims a little slower than the JM1. Even the accelerometer turns the image after a longer period. Both have a very good memory management, sometimes I get 270 MB free out of 326MB, and it stays in the range without the need of a reset after a long period of use.
I have heard the card fix really works...but the process seems very complicated to me. Perhaps I'm just a numbskull, but I dont understand how to do it...
...I dont want to do stuff that will brick the phone, unless I really know what I'm doing?

I think you have the memory bit wrong - it's showing 270MB USED out of 326MB (at least for me... I've never seen it dip below the 200s.
I just upgraded from XWJG5 to XWJM2. Good thing I ran Titanium Backup first! I didn't realize the flash would wipe all of my data. So far so good.
If you use a kill application the best I have seen so far is around 93MB free as Task Manager restarts by default.
The built in kill application on JM2 only kills battery hog applications which are running not the run of the mill applications running in the background.
Yes, I did notice the native Task Manager.
I have noticed with this firmware that the MarketEnabler is not working. I can't download some of my paid apps.

Use Eris Market fix from the market
Sent using Samsung Galaxy S
I wish it were so easy. I have never had success with Eris. I have had success with MarketEnabler, but the latest version may need an update to work with the latest firmware. Very frustrating though. Fortunately for me before I did the firmware upgrade I used Titanium Backup. Had I not I would have no Slingplayer or other paid apps on the SGS right now.
Back to Eris, I installed it last night well before midnight, cleared the cache, did the reboot and waited until this morning it being a new day, and still no luck.
Hi All,
So I updated from JG5 to XM1 then XM2. Moving from JG5 to XM1 was very laggy and seemed that XM1 might have been on the Alpha release level, it was good but too buggy.
I then upgraded to XM2 from XM1 and found significant improvements. Then I started to notice things that would normally work would not. The GPS didn't work, the market didn't work, titanium back up, kept getting interrupted during restore even when using after a clean reboot. Browsing through the phone was generally slower and menus would take a while to load.
XM2 seems great on first boot, but after you start loading some of your apps in and customize it to work the way you want it to, then you have problems.
I went back to JG5 as it is far more stable and reliable. I might wait till Froyo before I flash again, i've probably done 12 different flashes in the past 2 weeks.
Let me know if anyone has had better luck with XM2.
on my part.. i can say that JG5 is still the fastest and operates more stable than JM2 at stock settings no rooting done.
installed samset 1.6 and seemed to get abit slower in opening applications..
..will go back to JG5 for now.. hehehe
|| disclaimer: other users may experience differently. ^_^ ||
Im wondering why the phone is reporting more than 256MB usable since the current kernel version only allows upto 256MB
I found JG5 more stable whereas I have encountered few issues with JM2, market behaves strangly installed apps not showing status installed. More bugs in JM2, more lagging and apps taking longer to load like sky news i think I will go back to JG5.
JG5 is an official firmware? I mean App market will work without Eris Fix ?
Thanks !
Is JG5 an official firmware on which App Market is working without Eris fix ?
Thanks !
Hi,
I've searched this forum and google for this problem but couldn't get an answer so far. My Legend isn't rooted and I'm using 2.05.405.2. Always after about 2 days my phone gets really laggy. For example pulling down statusbar can take up to 20 seconds until it reacts. Also when I get an incoming call, picking up can last up to 10 seconds. The only way to resolvethis so far is to reboot the phone, but thats exactly what I don't want. I tried several taskkillers without success, I then tried without any taskkillers, too. Also same behaviour. I just have a few apps installed:
- JuiceDefender
- Opera
- ES File Explorer
- MixZing
- Handcent
- Facebook
- SystemPanel Lite
- K9
I tried to get into SystemPanelLite when the phone gets laggy to see what process this is causing, but without any success. I'm really puzzled as I don't understand, why the system is getting laggy up to an unusable amount. I'm not a poweruser who is playing around every 5 minutes with his phone, just writing and reading some SMS, taking a look at facebook and reading and writing mails. Is this a common problem with the legend and everybody is used to it or is this a problem that only hits me for whatever reason? Oh, yes, the problem also existed with older firmware, too.
No such problem in my legend
My legend is very smooth

same here. No such problem in my Legend, it is too smooth.
Legend is known to be a snappy handset.
How much free memory do you have ?
Did you try uninstalling any third party apps to see if any of that is causing the trouble?
Thanks for the answers. I uninstalled now k9, JuiceDefender and ES File Manager, as these are the only one, that I have installed always from the beginning. I'll report back, if that helped.
have you got the facebook contacts bug where you've got about 50,000 duplicated contacts?

No, facebook runs just fine with contact-synchronisation and all.

It happened even to me during the first start-up. I decided to reset completely the phone and make a clean start-up. I believe you should very carefully during the first sync of gmail, facebook, etc. Leave the time to the Legend to sync properly and install one application behind the other.
After that my Legend is working fine
As I upgraded to the first 2.xxx firmware, I had it resettet to defaults, as I did the upgrade via USB. As far as I remember, synchronisation was done when I began to install apps. But I think, if the deinstallation of the mentioned applications doesn't resolve this issue, I will try to reset it, too...
I had similar behavior, when installing that Facebook update last week. Besides the published battery drain the phone became laggy and unresponsive. The dialer sometimes took 10 seconds to react! Sometimes I could not even take a call. The patch that came after to improve the battery drain didn't fix the lag issue for me.
So I uninstalled the complete facebook update via application menu and voila! No more lag. Everything is as snappy as before. Not even a reboot was required.
I just uninstalled the fb updates out of interest and my Legend was much quicker! Reinstalling the updates and it's still quick. I didn't notice the slowdown before. Thanks!
After uninstalling k9, JuiceDefender, ES File Manager and facebook updates along with disabling facebook for android, so that there is only facebook for sense there, these are the results after 2 days so far:
- phone is snappy as if it was turned on 5 minutes ago
- battery-life is much better! Without JuiceDefender it was about 8-10 hours with very slight usage, up to 36 hours with JuiceDefender... today, after over 42 hours my battery is at 32%, I played games, wrote some SMS, took some pictures and had a short call
So it has to be one of the above mentioned apps. From what I read up until now, my closest bet is the facebok-app, that could be interfering with facebook for sense. I will now reinstall k9, JuiceDefender an ES File Manager and report back again in about 2 days.
Edit: It seems to be that k9 is the reason for the lags... just some minutes after installing and configuring k9 I noticed some lag with scrolling in lists, uninstalled it again and the lag was gone...
Update:
I installed the updates for FB again and I'm using it as before. The phone is still very snappy, no sign of slowdowns. Next I will test JuiceDefender.
After testing a lot with uninstalling all apps and then step by step reinstalling I found the problem: It seems that JuiceDefender triggered for whatever reason the lag after about 2 days. At the moment I also don't have a need to reinstall it, as from my testings I found out, that my battery lasts for 2 days without JuiceDefender, with JuiceDefender it was just 4-5 hours more. This is with fb-updates hourly, gps always on, 2 IMAP-Accounts that are qurried via push, some sms a day and about half an hour telephone, slight internet browsing.
Glad to hear your phone is running better. As a side note, I still use Juice Defender but an old version 1.7.7 The development seemed to go off the rails after this version and i was not happy with any other the updates so I am sticking with this older version.
Still get about 2x the battery life using it.
I also having same problem and available free memory keeps on reducing . Though i installed juicedefender, i never uses that and kill using system panel. Will uninstall and check for 2 days
I keep getting random lockups, at least more than once a day, and sometimes several reboots in a row.
It appears that i can happen almost any time, whether it be at a lock screen, while titanium is asking for root, or opening twitter or facebook, even the gmail app. It simply freezes, and requires me to long press the off button and reboot.
Unfortunately, i can't get adb via usb to work on the nook, so i can't get a reliable logcat.
Is this common? I have had two nook devices so far, tranferred the rom over through nandroid and have had lock ups on both, I am flashing regular cm7 nightlies now (emmc), but it occured using phiremod too.
Help?
I never had one, maybe I'm lucky
Have you tried fixing permissions in clockwork?
Sent from my LG Optimus V using Tapatalk
I am having the same problem. I loaded CM7 to my emmc yesterday and I have had it freeze on me a couple of times now. All have been random. I do have performance set to 1.1 and on demand gov set.
So I can just go to ROM manager to fix permissions? Hopefully that works.
EDIT**
Did not work. Was fine, then I uninstalled market updates, connected to wifi, opened the old market, searched for flash and it froze up. Any ideas?
EDIT 2**
uninstalled beautiful widgets (read that somewhere), so far no lockups (fingers crossed).
i had mine lock-up twice last night
i was in dolphinHD and i had just installed swype beta
i have only had 1 time that it has locked up before then in the last 1-2 months that i have had it.
im blaming swype, since i havent had the problem in the past
perhaps not your problem, if you dont have it installed.
I get lockups pretty regularly. It's irritating. Not sure what the cause is. I thought overclocking had something to do with it but everyone else is overclocked and this problem doesn't seem to be common.
How low do you have the voltage settings in tweaks? Having a voltage just barely too low for your CPU can cause a lot of weirdness. Also, it could be any one of the stepping voltage settings, not necessarily either the min/max frequency.
Folks, playing with the voltage settings in nook tweeks is not for the average user. These settings can really bork your nook. That's why you get a warning when you open those settings.
That being said, I have been running cm7 on eMMC for months and have never had a lockup. I am overclocked to 1200 mHz but have left the voltages alone.(cm7.1 nightly 160).
If you are running on eMMC,try fix permissions first. If that does not help, start looking at the apps you are running to determine if one of them might be the problem. Several people have reported issues running beautiful widgets. There are other apps that can cause issues. If you have good backups of all your apps, try removing apps one at a time. In the process, you might learn something about your system.
Worst case, reinstall cm7, wipe data, cache, and dalvic cache. Start over with a clean system and add your apps (apps only, not apps+data) one at a time. This will ensure that a possibly currupt data set was not causing the issue.
The key to a fast, well functioning nook is to start slowly and ensure each change works well before moving on to the next step.
While it's true I have more time than most to play (retired), my nook can run circles around most competitors but only because I took the time to set it up right the first time and I am not afraid to wipe everything and start over.

I fixed permissions some time ago, seemed to help a bit, but i still get the odd lock up or two. I am running Swype and Beautiful widgets(anyone know a good alternative?)
I had been getting irritated by these these random locks up for a while. It seems that uninstalling beautiful widgets fixed the problem for me. I thought it might be that BW was trying to access the GPS, but it still locked up after disabling geo location in BW.

In case you're still interested, BeWeather is a great substitute for BW and FlexT9 in place of Swype.
Also, I had issues with lockups no matter my overclocking and formatting the eMMC and possibly reseating the SD card fixed it.
New NC w/1.3 did BN stock update to 1.41, confirmed all working. Then I applied the manual nooter 5-12-20 using CWM sd with no errors or issues in installing/rooting/booting. A couple issues/observations after successful booting.
Posting here as new user hoping other new users in same boat without enough time on forum to be allowed to post to the dev thread (I've read every page of the thread and every post since 5-12-20 was released mult times so can say these questions/observations are either not observed or observed and not definitively answered that I could find).
A couple observations and questions:
1. At least 2 other posts noting issues with WiFi.....mid-usage wifi just drops goes dead and I have to manually connect - only started after applying 5-12-20 - is there a fix or something more I can contribute testing?
2. Damned market. Seen many posts relating to market - some claimed to "fix" by re-rooting after going back to stock (doesn't make sense since I observed no errors in the process). My market launched, then updated fine. I, however like others saw many common apps simply not there like Google's own Voice app, facebook app, etc. Maybe someone can tell me, should my rooted nook color NEVER even see those 2 apps in the market? If it should, something went wrong. **Yes, I went back to page 1 of that thread and applied the "market visibility fix" which really needs to be updated to say you MUST uninstall the market "update" to roll it back to the original rooted market then apply the steps - then yes, it worked in the sense that all apps EXCEPT for some pretty BIG ones like facebook, google voice, etc are listed. This one is the primary reason I'm rooting and I've read a LOT of different "fixes" of changing DPI, fingerprint, build.props, etc. yet in any of the original root instructions seen an indication that this is a STANDARD action every rooter needs to take. Why do some need this "workaround" of hacking dpi and props and some don't? Is it simply that those that don't are not using these very common apps like facebook? Someone could make my day by helping out with this as I really hate doing things half-assed and having something half-working.
3. Power consumption seems a bit higher than pre-MN-root which leads me to next question - the MN rooting process installs "google latitude", "navigation", and what appears to be phone processes. Without a gps or location services I can't seem to get these nav type apps to work (hang at aquiring location), is there a reason they are installed and is there a way to make them work? Can any of the phone/dialer type daemons be removed could any of them be increasing power consumption? Again, I'm game for testing if a dev can shed some light.
4. Basic question but one I saw people had app "updating" issues with but no clear answer as to best practices. If an app is available in both BN store and android market, are there pros/cons to installing one vs other? Netflix good example installed via BN store yet market says update when BN store does not.
5. Dual-booting - seen different threads but they are dated to older firmware and with the awesome job GMPOWER did putting together 5-12-20 MN, would love to help him or the devs test and put together a step by step rolling his 5-12-20 MN and current 1.41 in with whatever the best practices are for setting up a dual boot with CM7, etc.
Again, you guys rock and I love the NC, any help on these would be greatly appreciated!
I'm new here too,but I might have a simple solution to question #1.If you're "dropping WiFi" at home, check the channel your router is using and see if a neighbor (or two or three)are also using that channel."Sniffer" programs are around that will give you the info.Try to set yours up on a "clear" channel.Worked for me when the neighborhood "filled up" with routers all set to channel 6.Went to ch.3 and problem solved.
Good luck.
Thanks but as I stated only after the manual nooter is the wifi dropping - no need to get out wireshark when 4 other wifi devices including a non-rooted nook in the same room without dropping but thanks for the suggestion!
BTW, I should ask are you rooted and which version, etc?

I did not experience this issue. In fact, on B&N 1.4.1, my wifi was more dependable than on CyanogenMod. I suspect a lot of has to do with specifics on your wifi setup, including router make, security used and so forth. You could try tweaking parameters to see if it helps. Was it dropping as much before you ran MN? I wouldn't expect what was done with MN to make a difference. Are you using Dalingrin's kernel or anything similar?

Hmm. I never got around to trying Google Voice, and have no use for Facebook, so can't say for sure those were there. I've since nuked 1.4.1, so can't test now either. I can say that I had well over 100 apps that I commonly use on CM loaded, and didn't find any that I weren't visible in Market without any tweaks. It did take a long time for Market to update, but after that, it worked smoothly. You might try accessing the Market via the web interface and see if those apps will install from there. I did that a few times. Maybe that trips something?

My power consumption was initially very good, but after a week or so, I started seeing the battery drain go to 3-5% per hour. Unfortunately, 1.4.1 hobbled a lot of troubleshooting tools, so I wasn't able to nail down the culprit. This is what ultimately drove me to abandon 1.4.1 for CM again.
I did try renaming phone.apk and others that have been recommended, but my NC seemed to get very unstable thereafter. Lots of spontaneous reboots and the like. I put them back and really didn't see a big difference one way or the other that I can attribute to these. From everything I've read, they're not likely to cause noticeable drain, but some other standard functions depend on them.
4. Basic question but one I saw people had app "updating" issues with but no clear answer as to best practices. Cost is probably the main factor. Netflix from B&N supposedly supports HD while the Market version does not. On a 7 inch screen, I couldn't care less. Netflix off of the Market looks pretty good, so I'm happy.

What you do to stock is pretty much independent of dual-booting.
Bobstro,
Thanks so much for the input! As for the wifi, it does seem very specific to after I ran the MN on 1.41, in fact it never once dropped and I went back to stock 1.41 for the last day and haven't seen it drop again (my wife's is stock 1.41 and doesn't drop either when my MN does so unless it's a hardware issue I'm guessing it's something in the MN process, driver, etc.)
One weird thing I did have happen and searching found a couple references but nothing definitive was using CWM 3.2.0.1 flashing the 1.3 stock after formatting system, data, cache multiple times was my touchscreen did not work. I even re-downloaded the 1.3 from xda must have flashed 6 times never worked. Then downloaded a 1.41 posted on one of the recovery xda threads and lo and behold my touchscreen worked. Also, unlike the 1.3-1.41 upgrade, when I flashed right to 1.41 a couple things came up that didn't after upgrading mine and my wife's to 1.41, namely netflix right on the home screen touch to install, and the nook friends app right on the home screen.
Have you come across anything that would indicate why my touchscreen went dead no matter how many times I rebuild the CWM card, formatted the nook partitions correctly and flashed without error? It really made me worry I had a bad unit but like I said worked out of box, worked after 1.41 upgrade, worked after latest MN, only once I returned to 1.3 stock did it die until flashing 1.41 directly.
Interesting about the market, I did have thousands of apps just not some of the most common big ones and I did try through browser it told me facebook was incompatible with my device which led me to all the "hack the dpi, props file, etc." threads I just didn't want to be part of a minority for for some unknown reason had to hack workarounds if 99% of folks running the MN could simply install facebook and google voice from market without workarounds.
Thanks again!
Edit: on the dual boot I thought there was a way to install CWM or something to internal to allow dual internal booting from stock (nootered) and CM7 - I'll keep looking.

EDIT: Sorry about that strange post. I wanted to point you to the thread about the hardware having changed with more recent NC versions. 1.4.1 includes the newer drivers. Depending on where you get your older versions from, they may or may not work.
Well that 'kinda" makes me feel better that I at least don't have bad hardware, had I known the 1.3 that's posted was "different" then the 1.3 that came on my newer unit apparently must have had the newer screen drivers I would have backed it up - surprised someone hasn't posted it. I mean, mine came with 1.3 installed and the screen worked so it must have had the newer driver until I wiped it, right?
Also, do you have the links you referred to for the screen issues thread?
Thanks again!
The ongoing discussion I referred to is here. On page 2 or so, I've got a link the the original post.

Do look at WiFi, Once I Locked it on channel 1 it is rock solid reliable.
Bobstro,
I'm guessing your battery life must be a typo, at 10% an hour discharge would be 10 hours of runtime - they advertise 8. 3-5% sounds awfully low. Mine out of box is at about 10% an hour with wifi on and screen at 30% with constant online web browsing, maybe an app or two install, launching in and out of system apps, etc. - constant "activity" on my part not just flipping book pages or watching a video, etc.....I hope my unit is on par with others.
I also noted that my wife's refurb bought about thanksgiving that does not have the "new" screen hardware mine does actually looks side by side more blue/white with mine slightly yellower tinge which annoys me a bit. I know from years of jailbreaking and swapping iphones that there was definitely a difference in screen colors as they went from the 3g to the first 3gs I had, same thing blueish/whiter to a more yellow tinge - I can't win! LOL
Ah, sorry for the ambiguity. That was 3-5% while idle with screen off, which is far worse than normal. I expect to see 4-6% drop while idle with screen off overnight, max.
While in use, consumption is roughly 10% per hour, and mostly due to screen, which I usually run at 25%.
Is anyone else experiencing VERY poor performance after the update to Oreo? Im talking like apps taking 10+ seconds to open, or just not responding at all. It feels as if the phone only has 512mb of ram, I have tried a format, cleared the cache after the update, all the same issue.

Hello! I'm also.having terrible performance after the Android 8 update. I have. Tried a few launchers already, hola launcher, Microsoft launcher and Evie launcher, so far, the Microsoft launcher has the better performance, but still does the "soft crash" I mentioned and takes forever to load the home screen sometimes ?(right now I'm still using the Microsoft launcher)

Battery life is usually as good as new (I got this phone the past October). I can easily go through a full day with very heavy use (playing games on the phone that use a lot the GPU ) and two days when I don't play that much
Since around 8AM today, the top 3 apps that has consumed battery are:
Messenger 8%
Google play services 3%
Simple rockets 1%
Screen has used 5% and my phone has 74% as I'm writing this.

Hmmm. Ok, look in Settings at the "Storage & Memory" section, poke around and you'll see how much memory some apps have used. Anything look out of the ordinary there?
If you have Dev Options enabled there's an option in there to view running and cached apps as well, might be worth a look.
Unfortunately I'm just guessing as I don't have this problem myself, everything seems to be working now as it did with Nougat for me. I don't consider myself a heavy user though so it's not a good comparison.

Well, then only odd thing that I see is that in the storage and memory, Android OS has almost 1GB of ram being used, while the next process is using only about 200MB which is another system process (Android system) after those two is Google play services.
I have contacted asus support as well, and they only advices me to do a factory reset and if that didn't help, send the device to them "to get it checked" but I'm not willing to lose my phone for over a month!!
I also have had the same battery and performance problems. I did a reset and now all seems good, back to battery lasting 2 days with ease. I have gone into the settings for the auto start manager and that seems to have helped with some issues i had with my home screen taking a few seconds to load. I know this solution wont work for everyone i was hesitant to do the full reset but now wish i had done it after the last update as it has made all the difference
So I have found that having a SD card completly destroys the phone, when I took out my 128gb card the phone performs better, not to the level it should, but I can at least use it now. Is there any way to downgrade it back to android 7? Cause I'm at the point where I'm about to buy a new phone.

I was wondering if the SD card had something to do... I contacted asus support and they told me that they do not provide the ROM to downgrade, the only way they could help is for you to send them your phone so they can "check it". Which, as I said before, I'm not willing to do it.

I went through a RMA with asus for my phone once already, took them a month, no advanced RMA process, they sent it back, it broke again in 2 days, then i was without a phone for another month. Their process is pure **** and sending it in won't fix anything, this is nothing but a software issue.

Thanks for the find! I'm gonna try this right away, cause my phone is essentially unusable at this point.
