Hi all,
The title pretty much sums up the question- is anyone aware of a phone dialer app that you can use with only the D-pad and without the use of the touchscreen? As you might have seen in my previous thread, my digitizer is shot, so until that arrives in the mail, if I'm not using MyMoblizer I'm limited to answering incoming calls or using my quick-contacts. I can get to the dialer cooked-in by hitting the green button, but the arrow buttons all cause the screen to change to either speed-dial or call history. If there's an alternate or replacement dialer where you can navigate the numbers and select them, that'd be great.
Thanks!

Howdy folks.
First post. Came here looking for info on WM5 upgrade for my Magician. I'll leave well enough alone after reading the threads so far. (other than, say for example I "found" an installer on the net, if I installed it would it bork my magician?) Does the active sync "full backup" actually back up everything including the OS?))
What I'm posting about though, is there a hack or program that will allow me while I'm making a call to use the directional pad to highlight and press the keypad without resorting to the stylus?
The reason is when I call voicemail or any number that requires me to press an extra number for an extension i have to get the stylus out to press the number. If I could use the pad that would be really nice.
Thanks
just press the green call key and it brings the keypad up and you can use that... and no, the activesync back up doesn't back up the os thats on your rom
Er. I think I might have been unclear. Apologies.
I know how to bring up the keypad to dial numbers.
What I mean is when i'm on a call, I want to be able to dial 3 for example without having to use the stylus on the screen to press the 3 on the keypad. Ideally using the nav buttons to highlight the number and the centre button to press that number.

Thanks for the info regarding backup. Might wait till theres a specific WM5 installer for my handset then.
I don't think that what you want to do can be done.
You can prod the screen with your fingers as well as the stylus.
Oh well. That would of been a really simple way to improve the phones usablity. I try to keep my greasy fingers off the screen wherever possible.
I can think of a possible way to hack this in, but is there much "call" for it?
It seems like a bit of a specialised need.

if your worried about your screen i highly recommend pocket pc techs screen protectors. i ordered them off expansys.com and they're the best. i got two and still using the first one. i've tried several other screen protectors before and nothing matches these. http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~u...ories-WriteSHIELD%99+AG~action~updateunit.htm
To go back on myself, I can see that this might be a useful feature actually, to be able to dial using just the dpad. slow, but on the VGA WM5 at the moment, it might come in handy.

I installed and love phoneAlarm. The one problem I have with it is that you can't navigate to it's messages/missed calls/voicemail/emails icons with the d-pad. I like having it show me what I've missed, but I don't want to have to get out the stylus everytime i want to view one of the missed items. Is there a workaround for this or possibly a different app that will do what I want?
Also, is there a way to put phoneAlarm above the date on the today screen? If not, is there a different (1-line if possible) plugin that will show the date/time?
Thanks!

You could always use the left soft button. When you get a message or missed call it turns into the notification button. You could also send your request in to the guy who write phone alarm. the link to the beta forum is

My problem with my MDA Vario is mainly searching contacts. It's very fiddly normally and a copplete nightmare when driving. I really dont want to have to take the pen out just to make a call.
What are my options? Any better software/skinds around? Or is there an option i am missing that could make it easier?
Thanks
PS, i dont want to use vioce dialing because its completely crap on this model with its poor audio capabilities.
I'm pretty happy with voice dialing. I agree it is unsafe to find contacts while driving, but I find that if I enunciate distinctly both when recording and when finding, I get pretty close to 100% success with voice dialing.
i am also interested in an input method or a contact skin to make contacts easily browsable while driving ---
this would be one of the main reasons for keeping also a nokia 6630 besides the wizard.
The main fact is that they are to small to press with a finger, any way of making them larger?

Probably already mentionedbut I found this by accident.
If you press the 'Contacts' button, the contacts are listed alphabetically.
Assuming you want someone beginning with 'P', instead of trying to press the tiny 'p' button, simply scroll down by holding the down button, but keep it pushed like fast scrolling.
Keep it pressed and after a few seconds, a large pop up appears with the Letters in it, A,B,C etc.
Hold it until 'P' appears, let go, and you are at 'P'
Seect your contact and dial.
Sorry if this is old news.
voice dialling is the best answer cause i am driving about 10.000 km /month because of my business, holding down the down arrow is also hard to select a single contact, instead u can use smartskey to use the volume controller button act like page down.. 8)

Hey guys, I'm running a Sense build (Phiremod's Ace build) and having a problem with the HTC dialer's answer/reject call slider. (note that this is a problem with any of the Sense builds - not picking on Phiremod's.)
I pocket carry my HD2 and since the Sense answer/reject is an up and down slider, i always wind up answering or hanging up the phone when I pull it out of my pocket.
Does anyone have any ideas to change the incoming call behavior? I know I can remove the HTC lock screen, but the answer/reject slider is apparently part of the dialer (which I love otherwise). I used S2U2 on WinMo, and have been digging around for an Android alternative. Is there any way to get the stock Android answer/reject slider (left to right) on Sense without losing the HTC dialer?
Thanks,
Ryan
+1. Have the same problem
+1, the sense lockscreen makes no sense. Unlocking in pocket, answering can be done just by looking at it from wrong angle...HTC must come up with something quick. Can't even call that a lockscreen

happened a lot of time to me... I'm happy to know that I'm not alone...
Im not sure why HTC made the slide up and down like that it really doesn't make any sense. On the WimMo sense it slides side to side.
Count me in Big relief to see others with the same "challange". In my case it often answers call without me knowing it when its in my pocket.

This is the only reason I avoid Sense. Phone upside down with the screen facing my leg is the only position that works (ie makes it easy to check the screen by pulling it out of my pocket). Unfortunately, that also declines every call I try to answer.
+1 !!! anyone?!?!
solution found!
OK i hope you guys see this - i found a solution -
just install this .apk, it presents a screen with two simple buttons (answer\decline) instead of having to slide. works like a charm no more leg\but answering declining calls
I had this problem also. Just go to system/app and you'll see htclockscreen.apk and htclockscreen.odex. You can rename or delete them but I just moved them to a folder within system/app so they're not loaded. Once done, reboot and you'll get the stock lock screen.
hey tnx mr_dilly, i actually know that, but even after going back to the stock froyo lockscreen, when getting a call you still get the htc answer\decline slide screen which is, as mentioned, crap..

Sorry, omricn. Overlooked that bit. I thought the slide to answer went away because I got the answer/reject buttons but apparently it changes once the phone is actually locked.
I use a android build without sense. Is there any app to unlock power button?
I often get a call while my phone is in my pocket and then accidently press my power button, so the call will be rejected.

are you sure the power button is the issue? how does your incoming call screen look like? it could be the same issue that i had, the slider responded to the insides of my pocket, i dont believe the power button is being pressed unless you're wearing very very tight pants
I don´t have a sense build.
I get no slider, only the answering buttons on my screen. But hardware buttons are working too. When i put my phone from my pocket i often touch my hardware power button and then the incoming call is ended.
I use proximity screenoff, so screen is blank and i can´t touch any button on my display. If i press power button, the incoming call is rejected.
I want to have a slider on my display and hardware buttons should be locked complete. Only answering a call with something on my display, but not with hardware button.
understood.. i'll be sure to let you know if i find a solution
Hi All!
The biggest problem with Sense in my opinion is the slide for unlock/answer screen. The engineer that came up with that design should get a serious *****-slap. Replacing the lock screen is fairly simple though, e.g by WidgetLocker. Replacing the slide (up/down) to answer is not that simple because it's part of the dialer, not the lock screen.
So if you like HTC sense and the sense dialer, I think you have to stick with the slide up/down for answer. I'm sure that some clever dev eventually will iron out the problem, but currently I see no solution.
Agree with every word..
I have been looking for some solutions to de-complicating the Droid 2 and have been stumped so far.
1) Is there a way to put large photos on a home screen that link to a direct dial? The current/stock contacts widget photos are too small and the direct dial link is also not the photo itself. I just want to put two medium-large photos on the screen and give them a tap to dial the contacts.
2) Is there any way to make the app icons bigger?
3) Can the voice dialer be made more simple? Rather than "dial [contact] mobile 1," is there a way to just say "dial [contact]?"
4) When making a call, the screen stays on and buttons get pressed. Any way to disable this?
- I do not want to root the phone at the moment.
Thank you in advance for any help provided.
I'm not sure about 1 or 2 but the default google search bar you can say call (contact) and it will dial the person you said and the backlight is supposed to turn off when the phone is against your face because of a small sensor somewhere on the front of the screen. If its not working you either accidently disabled it some or the phone is not working properly. Check your apps and see if anything you downloaded may be doing that. Hope that helps a little.

for #1 search the market for clickable picture frame. awesome app, can do direct call, direct text, etc.
Thank you!
The clickable picture frame is exactly what I needed.
I am still working on the other issues.
The screen proximity sensor seems to work correctly for me, but the phone user still has trouble with it. We're troubleshooting bit by bit.
