Youtube problems. - Touch HD General

Hi There!
I have had the touch HD for approx 2 months and overall I really like it, but there a couple of issues I am having with it and would be grateful if people would be able to offer advice.
1) The greatest problem I have is when downloading youtube videos. The videos do not run smoothly and interupt every second(only picture, not sound). This stops once the video has fully downloaded and then the picture runs smoothly.
2) I have downloaded Skype and it works, just wondered if it is possible to either create or watch the video of either yourself or the other user. So far I can only use it as a phonecall.
Thanks

Sounds like a straightforward bandwidth/connection issue with youtube. You aren't able to download it fast enough - probably an issue with your signal, not your phone.

How to watch YouTube Videos!

Did you know that there is an easy way to stream youtube videos from PIE (Pocket Internet Explorer) using TCPMP? You just click the video and a menu pops up so you can choose if you want to watch or download the video, works just like on your pc.
Check it out here: http://discussion.treocentral.com/showpost.php?p=1319431&postcount=1
By the way, it is very important to download the FlashVideoBundle.CAB provided on the site. I used another version and it didnt start any videos, only timed out after a while. Then I downloaded FlashVideoBundle.CAB from site and it worked like a charm.
You would also need to install the FLV plug in for TCPMP if you dont already have it, you can download it from this site: http://tcpmp-plugin-for-flash-video.softonic.de/windowsmobile
Remember to use Internet Explorer, it will not work in Opera!
Good Luck!
I know this Youtube plugin for PIE with TCPMP 0.72 from Hermes.
Does play google video and others too.
Working great, if not working after some time Youtube changed something on their site and you'll have to install the updated plugin. Newest version is 1.44 by now.

Cool little program, but I cant seem to find how to download videos with it, or is that even possible?
Vtap picture resoultion is not as good. Also the selection of video is not as wide, I think. Is this what you have found out too?
vTap is probably better suitable for smaller devices with less power!

I have been spending the last hour or so testing out vTap and here is what I have found.
1. The Video quality is poor compared to the direct streaming solution with TCPMP.
2. I am unable to find any way to download videos, which I think is a great disadvantage!
3. Not all videos that shows up in the search query works!
However, vTap is defenetley a very fast and usable program. It performs very quick searches and the conversions are quick! I also like the wikipedia function.
I think however that this program is better suitable for devices with smaller screens and less cpu power, I will test and see how it performs on my "HTC Touch" before I can say that for sure tough, I will let you guys know as soon as I can!
But as far as viewing and downloading videos on my "Athena" goes I think I will stick to the first method that I mentioned!
Branko, I'm not sure why this keeps happening, but I would go a minute or two into the clip and it will just freeze. I saw this posted on another thread. So I came here, downloaded the version you linked to....yet the same thing. Is there a setting I need to change or something?
I have the two files in TCPMP, I dowload the latest version Flashbundlepackage, and I'm using IE to play the clip.
I will go to google full, select the first video just to test, and will pull up TCPMP but after a minute.....FREEZE.
thanks for the links though!!!
Try to download to device!

If the video starts without a problem and then freezes after a while then it cant be a problem with the codec, dont quote me on that tough.
What I would check if I was you is if the video freezes even if you download it to the device and play from there, if it doesnt freeze when playing from device it´s probably a slow connection or problem with youtubes site for the moment. (Happens alot!)
If it freezes even when you have downloaded it, I would try to reinstall the TCPMP and all the codecs!
Please tell me how it goes!!
vTap IS better for small screen devices!

Ok, so I have been playing with vTap on my little "HTC Touch" now for a few hours, and I can confirm that the program INDEED is better suitable for small screen devices with less CPU power!
Anyway thats my opinion, it´s for everyone to decide for them selfs what they want to use in the end!
So let´s hear it guys, what is your prefered method on Athena?
Thanks Branko,
After I reinstalled all of the codecs, it continued to freeze. So tried to adjust some of the settings, still to no avail. Then i noticed that I want to view it in "fullscreen". So I decided to to let it play with out "fullscreen". Behold, the problem was fixed.
Literally, if i keep it in the un-fullscreen mode (not sure what its called) it plays just fine. Its one of those things I wouldnt have figured out at all.
So there we go, atleast a fix on my end, is to watch all of the playable clips in the un-fullscreen mode and it will play just fine. I assume that if the file is small enough, I can download and play in fullscreen mode.
Thanks alot for your help Branko
You should be able to play in full screen mode too!

What do you use to play Youtube videos?
Is there any more programs or ways to play videos from "youtube" and other sites? Please share!
I have just voted and then read the thread - I am the only one who has voted for vTap!
I must admit, I am only an occasional user of youtube and love vTap's simplicity (and the wikipedia search) and for my usage it works fine, especially given the complexity of the alternatives.
Different people want different things - I want something simple (like me).
Good luck in finding your ideal solution!
App that can save Videos?
Is there any application like "vTap" but where you can actually save videos onto your device instead of only being able to watch online?
I would love to use such a program!

Guys,
Technology for youtube on Athena has already moved on beyond recognition recently. I don't use TCPMP anymore.
You could use youtubeplayer from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385227
Youtubeplayer 1.0.7 lets you download and save the files.
Or Coreplayer, the latest version 1.2.4 lets you watch but not to save it yet. Of course, it can aso play flv files previously saved.
If you're not using realVGA or only using 192dpi, both the above user interface are very nice. If you're using 96dpi, then coreplayer's interface is the most beautiful.
If you want to do a little more indepth research to understand why coreplayer is one of the best way to go at the moment, read this "youtube bible":

Thanks
Works great guys, thanks for the work and information

Problem with Youtube app with the new R2A ROM

youtube player app from blackstone is playing video baldy with the generic UK R2A ROM. Very sluggish and lags a lot. Never had this problem with any of the ROMs i used before. Note that the video playback is good with this ROM, its just youtube videos on "high quality" with the youtube app play very slow and lagy.
I tried to re-install the app, not luck. Still videos play bad.
Any thoughts?
Guys anyone with the new generic UK ( or any R2A ROM) can atleast try youtube videos (on high quality please) and report?
would like to know if this is a problem with my phone or is it the ROM.
I reflashed generic UK ROM again (yes reflash, not hard reset) but still facing the same lag playing HD videos.
ive got the same lag while playin HQ videos with the new r2a swedish fw

Same here I'm using I'm rom new one
if you're with Vodafone UK, they say there's problems with gootube traffic currently and they're planning on changing something on their network to resolve it. if it's wifi/non-VF-UK, then i've no idea.
i'd try it myself, but mine's off for repair. using an N73 in the interim. grim.
It lags when using WiFi and High Quality Youtube here.
As long as the video loads, it lags very much and as soon as the file is fully loaded it runs smooth.
Are you guys/girls having problems with Internet access?
Opera Mobile/RSS hub has no problems connecting, but PIE remains forever on "Searching" (and never really pulls the website). The same is the case with Gmail using Pocket Outlook (IMAP/POP3). Thank goodness for Opera Mobile otherwise I would have gone back to R1A.
What I'm getting at, is maybe it's something to do with the DNS lookup/download routines? Is anyone else having the same problem?

This I dunno, because I never tried youtube with the old ROM.
But it's very annoying. I would let it load completely before watching but it seems that the video won't completely load before you start watching it -maybe there is a buffer size that has been set too little?
Yesterday night, I wanted to show a few music video to my girlfriend (no, it's NOT the best thing I know to do in bed ) but first it won't load completely and after a few seconds it started lagging. Then I had to pause it to let it load a little more.
^^lol. watching desktop youtube vids on opera is smoother. video plays smooth even when its still loading.
I also have lag in the youtube app since the r2a Dutch Rom
Anyone has a solution?
I have lag with R2A generic UK too.
Plays fine once the whole video is loaded.
It's choppy here too. Generic UK R2AA.
I've been playing a lot with the registry settings but there does not seem to be any difference no matter what I do.
I did manage to find one useful setting though; Set 'DisplayThroughput' = 1 and you can see the kBytes/s transferred in the titlebar when playing a video.
so is everyone saying that the upgraded rom is not as efficient at playing youtube as the old rom? or is it about the same?
i really dont watch you tube on my xperia but just curious. i got an x1a with the original firmware and for what i use it for, ive had no problems with it (bluetooth, wifi, phone calls, connections, gps) and so upgrading would be like pointless for me or not worth taking a chance to upgrade and be disappointed.
^^yes. video playback on the youtube app is laggy when its not fully loaded. def not the same.
Nothing wrong with mine. NAM rom, YouTube from the manilla cab.
Got the same problem, thru WIFI-connection. A friend says his is good but he goes thru turbo3g. Could it be a wifi-error?
It's the same on HSDPA here, so it's not necessarily a wi-fi problem. I did try with 3G only, and it does play a lot better, but not 100 % smooth as when the video is fully downloaded. (Additionally, HQ over 3G is not usable.)
It looks kind of like video on a windows computer without a display driver installed (default VGA windows driver installed). Choppy and laggy as hell. This may be connected to the same issue in video playback, where the Xperia has problems playing videos that should play smoothly. It may be some sort of I/O problem - prioritizing or the like.
We have to remember that Youtube is made for HTC devices, not 100 % Xperia X1. There may be some hidden issues there. Let's hope SE comes up with their own YT panel or app.
I flashed back to the old ROM for now, until someone fix this problem. Youtube is kinda important for me

Smartphones noob planning to buy HD concerned about video playback

Hello,
i'm really noob to smartphones... my last phone being a very old Nokia (5 or 6 years old) which can just call and send sms^^
I am now considering buying a HTC touch HD and what i am looking for is mostly:
a) big screen for reading comics
b) big screen and video quality for watching movies
c) gps
d) decent phone (call and sms)
My biggest concern, reading many topics on the subject, is the quality of video playback and the need to convert video files.
Is there some smartphones (with of course the appropriate viewer programs) which can manage any video (divx, xvid...) with good results? (without the need of converting video files)
Or it's the same situation for any phones on the market?
The HD can manage xvid files with core player? I think i read somewhere they need to be converted too but i'd like to make sure.
Thanks a lot for any calrifications on the issue
I watched a divx movie using the core player sometime back. but now I tend to watch the bbc catchup programmes which are in wmv.
I dont know about reading comics on the screen but of the few time times that I have read my ebooks on it, I found that I had to constantly zoom in and out.
for the gps is quick ok. I use Quick GPS to get a lock on my position and then use one of Google Maps, Garmin XT, Live Maps and they do just fine.
I don't have much to say about the call and sms except maybe that it does the job well.
It's quite easy: video playback requires processing power and a driver system which allows to make proper use of it. In addition, it also depends on the formats, which require more or less processing power. I believe you will encounter the same difficulties on all the other smartphones at this moment. The TG01 looks promising, but it then still depends on the format of the video file.
Maybe it's just too early for the kind of video playback you are used to due to the Web 2.0 and the x86 processing power. Next year, the situation might look better on the mobile market.
i have had no probs in video playback in fullscreen, i think it works well.

Video, What am I doing wrong.

I have tried several trials on video converters and no matter what I do I get great picture but the voice is way behind.
How do I get the voice to catch up with the film. ( sorry I know it is not techy language)
I use MediaCoder to transcode video. It's free.
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/
The even got the iPod Edition which u can use for simplicity reason.
Thank you, can you tell me what settings you have used on that programme.
Core player, THE best media player you can get imo.
Will even play .mkv!!!

He is talking about encoding the movie.
You can try Windows Media Encoder (from Microsoft).
It's also free, and does a good job on encoding movies.
hi guys,
i seem to be having the same problem with the whole audio and video out of sync. i have tried a range of format eg. wmv, mp4, 3gp etc but all are about half a second out of sync. i have even tried core player and tmpcp but with no luck. did anybody else have this problem and manage to fix it? any help will be much appreciated
Hello,
I use the HTC Touch HD Video Converter which is very good. He is especially for WVGA 800 x 480 screens, and the quality of the movie is very good.
HTC Touch HD Video Converter v1.21
DVDFab6
I have not (yet) seen the problem with the sound you describe here.
I use DVDFab6 since a while, originally to convert videos to my iPod, but now also to my HD2.
I have a Touch Diamond too, but the screen is a bit too small to watch for longer time and it drains the batteries also very fast. I haven't tried yet fully, but my first tests show me I can do 3-4 hrs of video on one battery and still have enough power left to use it as a phone. Which is very useful if you have to do a lot of short flights.
I use the PS3 settings in DVDFab6 and adjust the display to 800x444 size, depending on the original size. I found that I can not play them directly from Mediaplayer, but if I click on them in the FileExplorer they start playing without any problem.
BTW, also the iPod m4v files play nicely without delays on the HD2
Yeah i have the same problem, the video/audio file is perfect on my pc but about half a second out of each other on my HD2. You can adjust the audio/video sync in core player but it shouldn't be happening in the first place.
hi guys, thanks for your help. i called htc tech support but all they were able to say was perform a hard reset, which sadly didnt fix the problem! even mp4 videos downloaded straight from the net have the same problem. such a shame because apart from that its an amazing phone. will keep trying and post up if i have any luck
I just tried the one that Braakie suggested and although it converted my 700Mb AVI film to a 500Mb MPEG 4 film, when i tried to copy it to my SD card on my HD2 it said the MPEG 4 format wasn't supported. Can someone enlighten me as to what formats are supported and/or what movie player they use.
I'm having the same audio sync issues as others here. I'm encoding using handbrake and when I play it back on the PC it is perfectly in sync. However when I play it back on the HD2 using the HTC video player the audio lags slightly but noticeably behind the video. When I copy it to my wife's Touch HD it plays fine, so it seems to be a problem with the HD2 software.
I'm running the stock Vodafone 1.43 ROM with all hotfixes applied. Will a ROM update fix this? Anyone else with this ROM having/not having this problem?
I'd be very grateful for any input.
Chaps,
Somewhere on XDA is Chainfire's video driver update (or a reference to it) which you should find and install to help overcome the lip synch issue.
If you can't find it using Search...http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=+site:http://forum.xda-developers.com&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all then go onto the Modaco site and its there somewhere under the Toshiba TG01 device.
Good hunting.
WB
Thanks for your help - I've found the driver here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592663
However, as far as I can see that's a 3D OpenGL driver and not something that I would expect to affect video/audio synchronisation. Unless, of course, you had the same problem and this fixed it for you? I don't really want to mess about with video drivers unless I'm sure it will fix it.
I was a little dubious and cautious myself but installing the driver did seem to make a difference, sufficient for me not to notice it as much.
Installation is a personal choice. You might want to make a full backup of your device using, say, SPB Backup, before you install. That way you can do hard reset and restore if you don't like the driver.
All the best,
WB
I have the same problem with youtube vids too, just had a replacement hd2, but it's just the same, skyfire, coreplayer, youtube you name it, audio lags the video...
Real pain in the butt for a device who's main feature is a huge screen...!!!

Well I installed the 3D driver, which was easy enough, but unfortunately it made no difference at all to the video/audio sync in either of the two driver modes so I uninstalled it again. (No need for a hard reset, thankfully). I'm using the video in this thread to test since you can easily tell whether it's properly in sync or not.

Oh well, it was worth a try - thanks for the suggestion.

video playback problem !!!!

is anyone having a video playback problem with HTC video player ???
I have, tried openeing a rather low-res MP4 video, and it wouldn't open it; the screen was black and it only said "loading" or whatever.
I tried 3 or 4 times, and during the last attempt it said something like "fatal error - blah blah - ARM11"
I didn't risk trying openening any videos again
No problems here at all - with mp4 files. Any other format is... disappointing. Except maybe if you install another video player app.
the problem, i am experiencing is the video recorded with the handset can not be played at all. i had to do hard reset couple of times just to have it work again. this happens after i install some applications. i tried uninstalling the apps, but in vain.
really appreciate if anyone can help me out here !!!

If it works after a hard reset, but not after installing some apps, do a hard reset and then try playing a video after each installation. That way you can identify which app is causing the problem.
Sounds like you'll need another hard reset afterwards, but at least you'll know the app that is breaking the video playback, and you can let us all know so that no-one installs it again!
I will bet you its right after you install the youtube app, because it uses similar files (you may notice the video playback uses a UI similar to that in the playback in the YouTube app) Would like to know if this situation can be fixed myself, without having to resort to flashing a rom and losing my warranty

You're spot on dude. I device was playing videos very well until I installed Youtube. Noticed straight away it was that causing the problem. I haven't removed youtube simple because of the fact its a brilliant app! works brilliant with wifi. Such a shame its the only place I can see video footage!
SOME ONE PLEASE FIND A WAY TO FIX IT OTHER THAN UNINSTALLING YOUTUBE!
remove youtube app and still watch youtube on opera
You may find this thread useful in getting opera to work properly when you visit youtube dot com. That way you can get rid of the app and still watch vids from there - you can even cue vids up in a playlist exactly like on a desktop pc.
