Hi all,
I have a 8125 (Wizard) that I bought used with a broken LCD - I replaced the LCD with hopes of having a functional phone, but I'm not quite there...
It WAS working as a nice little PDA for a while, with the newest Cingular ROM (2.25 I believe). HOwever, I received absolutely NO signal on the radio - the little animation just constantly went like it was forever searching.
So, in my newfound expertise in flashing HTC devices, I decided to flash this to a different ROM. First, I tried the one they call Button 1.05. No bones - it'd drop connection before even going to the tri-color.
Next, I tried the SlimEdition 2.2b of WM6 (I wanted to put WM6 on it anyway, and with this old of a phone, I'm keeping away from excessive gadgets). Same deal as the Button 1.05.
On to the Faria WM6 I found in another forum. This one didn't even find my phone.
Before suggesting I try doing the flashes more than 1 time, I did.. I've been trying to flash this thing for over a month...
Additionally (and probably part of the problem), when I connect the phone to my mini-USB (no, not HTC OEM) it establishes connection about 1/3 of the time....the rest of the time I get a "USB Device not Recognized" warning from XP - I then disconnect it and reconnect it until AS4.5 sees it.
Most recently, I tried putting the Button 1.05 on again, and actually made progress...sorta...
Once I got the RUU running, I actually got it to progress to 2% before the RUU declared a connection failure. Stuck in the RUU screen, I tried all the ROM's I have on this thing, and none get past 2%.
So, NOW, I have an 8125 that's stuck in the RUU screen. I dont know what I can try next, or what might be the problem - however, if anyone knows or has spare parts they're willing to donate to science (I can afford to pay the shipping - that's about it) then I would be most grateful. My initial thoughts are bad USB port or mainboard, but I haven't a clue where to get them.
Alternatively, if I dont hear from anyone soon with good news, I will be offereing for sale 1 hardly used LCD/Digitizer combo for what I paid for it. (approx $45 USD).
Summary (long post, eh?):
1> Can I get out of the tri-color RUU screen, or did it getting to 2% and then dying effectively brick this phone?
2> Anyone have suggestions on what to replace to prevent AS4.5 (or even Windows) from misdetecting the phone when connected via USB?
3> Anyone have parts for above-mentioned repairs/replacements? I'd be most grateful....
TIA!

Follow up - next day (yes, next day)....
Apparently, the Forum Gods were watching over me as I spewed about my flashing issues......
I tried flashing it one more time, using the Slim v2 WM6 ROM....wouldn't ya know, the sunnovabatch worked....
Dunno why or what I did differently, but I dont want anyone pounding their heads trying to find an answer for this....
(I'll still take any donor phones, though...this one is 'better', but still not 'great')
Thanks for lookin!

thats good to hear. say, how hard you think it would be to replace a usb port connector? mine is broken

Well, I've never replaced one myself, but it looks like it's just a few solder joints....
Can anyone confirm this? I dont want to mislead you by saying it's easy, in case it just looks easy, and really isn't.....
Also, I think I saw a thread elsewhere where someone had a bunch of the USB connectors that (s)he was selling....search here first - I'm pretty sure it'll be a better deal than you'll find on fleabay....

I recently got a Wizard from someone I know. I unlocked it and flashed some ROM. I didn't like the ROM so I went to T-mobile NL website and got their official update to WM 6.0.
I also had the Kaiser update to WM6.1 on my desktop. Is it possible that I accidently flashed the Kaiser ROM to the Wizard or would I get an error before the proces of flashing started??
After some long night playing with my toys I found the Wizard dead next morning... it doesn't do anything anymore...no bootloader no led's no battery charging....nothing.
Maybe I should consider not drinking beer while playing
Anyway is there a solution or is this my first bricked HTC device?
Well, if you did indeed flash a Kaiser ROM to a Wizard, than I am fairly certain that it is bricked my man! Stop drinkin and flashin!
Try swapping the battery with another HTC device, if possible.
Try charging the dead one with a wall charger, if not.
If it won't charge, and won't boot, then you have yourself an expensive paperweight.
Hahahaha
My Men!!! The no ID RUU is hacked to dont recognize the device model? the Country? or some ID like IMEI? its dangerous isnt it? that's why i rename all the files for ROMS like wizard_bla_bla_bla.rar or something jeje cause my brother has a HTC universal.
So about your batt... get a wall chrger that gets more than 1 ampper maybe 2 and more output input doesn't matter its a default value for home electrical supply, and conect it.... if its not so try with a technician that make electroshocks to the poles with a little generator... it works for revival batt full drained by mistakes. or get an only batt all charger it exist believe me.
and if it works buy a new one cause the one you've got and revives dont last forever again.
Thanx folks, I am gonna try and find a replacement battery now. Luckely the wizard is just for playing...
My Magician charger....
I have these chargers lined up and haven't been using the Magician one for a long time.
At some time today I was looking and thought: What the Heck! give it a try...read the miniscule sticker: 1 Amp !?!
She Lives!! ...and all the settings are still there !?
am gonna try to flash the Kaiser rom to see wether that is possible gnagna
Will stop in time.
You dont learn
you dont learn the lesson... maybe it says wrong device....

Nope, just anxious to find limits.
Trial and error is the best teacher.
I tought I had a boot problem on my Elf, after days with sw related troubleshooting I found out that the CPU crashes with normal temperature. At startup it stops right before you have to type the PIN code for the SIM card, unless its cold - then it works like a charm! Now we live separate lives, me in the livingroom and my htc in the fridge!
Sounds familiar to anyone? I expect that some hw replacement have to be done but I have no idea what could cause this fault. It came suddenly at normal use.
Are you serious? You're actually saying you keep your phone in the fridge??!! For real? And as unbelievable as that sounds....it works fine there....and crashes the moment you get it out?? Like for real??
Are you sure you didn't flash a new rom or something...or changed something after which this has started. I've seen some weird issues...but this one surely takes the cake.
lol... sounds funny !
Seems complicated but you can always move to the north pole, hitch a ride with santa when he comes................
Ok enough joking around and let's get serious: if you can take the touch apart completely because you must have it filled with dust etc. and it heats up because it doesn't have enough refrigeration result: power off or crash. There is a tutorial on how to do this somewhere here. I had the same issue with a nokia some years ago and even used bluetooth to make calls from the fridge untill someone told me why.... you can't do it wrong there is a tutorial
disassamble
Yes, I've sees the turtorial and saved it as a favoritt! I also disassambled it once to see if theres a obvious reason for this behavior, but it seems all good. I might try again and look for hotspots, and clean out whatever I can find. It is over a year old, so it would be believable that dust generates the overheat.
By the way, I allready live half way up to the north pole at aprox 66 degrees north - northern norway! Not so cold to day, +6 Celcius!
lol...ok then. All the extreme temperatures apart.....If your device is over a year old....might I suggest a hard reset then. If could be some phone malfunction. A hard reset might just put it back together again. Of course....do backup all your info first.
yeah
I did the hard reset early before I had any chance to do a backup as a init to my trubleshooting. It might give a tad faster phone, but that could be because there is nothing more to process!!! Sees like the temperature is more critical. It works fine for an hour or two then its right back to the frigde...
I did suspect the battery, that it could generate to much heat because of its age, but the batterytime is all fine and it doesnt feel very hot!
time will show... Just waiting for the Touch HD to get over its "publication-over-price", and the my Elf will live happily ever after in my drawer (Sorry if thats a four letter word in this forum)
away from the funny posts above a technical question did you use any program for overclocking before this happen eg battery status
No overclocking!
The phone is all original settings and software. It happend when the when I was on the phone and the "battery low turnoff"-interrupt occured. I put in the charger and tried to restart the phone, but it stopped right before the PIN-code meny. The backgroundlight responds to the buttons when it crashes. It seems that its just waiting for the SIM-card init-rutine.
But if I've coold it down and get it up and running, it still crashes when it reaches normal temperature. As the temperaure rises it respons slower and slower at buttons etc. In the end it all stops and it stays "where you left it"! The on/off bacgroundlight function still remains intact, but you cant use the power off function on the same button. Only soft reset - and go to bootleg(RGB-window) - and then power it down with the power off button. Then it goes to fridge again...
I shall try to clean it inside later on even though it seemed all fine when I had a look earlier.
Replaced the motherboard
If anyone out there still is interested; I sendt the phone to a serviceshop some days before the guarantee time ended and they gave me a new motherboard in the phone. So insted of having a broken Elf in my closet I now have a up going and working elf in my closet - for what its worth!!
LOL! ok well I live in Africa.. summer temps. from 25 - 35 Degrees C are the norm and I've never had a problem like that, hehe.
Got a HTC P3450 that won't respond to anything. Plug in USB, nothing. Plug in charger, nothing. Hard reset, nothing.
Throw in the bin or is resurrection possible?
Can you try to press the power + camera button together?
Do you see a bootloader screen.
If the phone still wont start , it maybe one of these issues.
- Battery totally dead
- Motherboard Issue (Which you are screwed)
- Power button issue.
Ok I tried the power + camera button together and nothing happened.
I have two batteries and neither work. I tried power + camera button together with the unit plugged into the power socket and via USB and that didn't do anything either.
So I guess it's down to a bad motherboard or a power button issue. Although if it was just a power button issue the charge light or something would come on or something yeh?
100% no power on, everything tried
I bricked my ELF01000 but Dopod 601 China by ....
shameful mistake of rebuilding the ROM without erasing the "backup" word from: -
backup_GSM.nb
backup_IPL.nb
backup_mainsplash.nb
backup_os.nb
backup_spl.nb
hence now can't even power on from
1. camera+power+reset once and hold camera+power
2. phone dial and disconnect together + reset once and hold phone dial and disconnect
3. regular reset
4. battery removed - plugged in USB
5. battery removed - plugged in adaptor from mains
6. battery inside + USB or mains
7. battery from another elf with over 70% power
8. plugged into adaptor from mains overnight 8 hours
9. all no orange light on the indicator
Even if every software code is wrong, the indicator light should be ON right???
all failed
simply won't power on,
if only can get into bootloader >>...........
Ohmy, thats bad.
Could it be like a bad motherboard or connector issue?
actually it's not my own ELF, sorry!!! misinformed you all.
It's my friend's Dopod S1.
I've surrendered my ELF HK english WWE to him as a replacement.
Currently using Asus P552w GalaxyMini2, although much faster but extremely unstable and buggy
resisting to buy a blackstone , may be will try the rumoured release of LEO ????
Anyway, still hope someone can provide some light to this "can't power on at all issue".

If you are using a genuine htc elf.
You can try the gold card and unbricking methods at the htc upgrading forum.

Get an android phone, under htc, heard that it was better.
Hi Jeremy (nice to have someone to chat with, thanks)
I believe my friend's ELF is a genuine unit, it had pof's SPL 1.11. And a Chinese guy cooked his own rom and named it Guilin2008.02.22. Plus I could dump everything using the "automated backup.bat". Device ID by dsixda also read well.
The problem now is it could not even turn on to white screen or bootloader. I though at least it must have some power response, or else gold card unbricker won't start right?
So you recommend the "android" ..... I haven't study it at all..... though keep to WM, easy WMDC with outlook each..... plus I'm itching to get a bigger screen type, like blackstone, but ouch it's not only big, but expensive too.
Say, ELF's 200Mhz sometimes feel faster than Niki's 400Mhz (my director's unit), and also faster than Blackstone's 528Mhz (my CEO's unit). I think blackstone uses too many 3D ...... if I ever get one, must replace the rom with light versions...
Anyway, learning to cook my own now, only managed to dump, but still don't understand enough to cook.... well keep reading
Hello CX5,
Thanks alot for dropping by XDA, without you, there wont be me, either.
Yeah, I feel that those devices with more processing power, HTC would usually like to cramp lots of useless animations to the device, thus taking up more space and more power and make the phone slower, so you will buy a new set soon.
Talking about your elf, I cant really help, you may have to drop by your closest service centre for a checkup. I am only more technically inclined to software issues, so hopefully, someone with technical knowledge is able to help you with this.
Android is really a good OS, I managed to install it on my ELF recently, just to give a spin on how it works. Its great, good to use and most importantly, open source.
I seen the newspaper recently, and have you heard about that famous MP3 player brand called Creative, those people originated from my hometown, Singapore. They recently lauched a new phone which comes with their own OS or Google Android, and it cost around $120 USD for Telecoms to buy and rebrand themselves.
I clearly see Android being the next OS, and on top of that, Microsoft's Office is teaming up with Nokia, to install Microsoft Office Mobile onto Nokia Symbian phones.
With that,
I wish you all the best for your phone ( A New one, probably )
Jeremy
Thanks again Jeremy
yeah, my friend's send the wrongly_flash ELF to a hwardware repair, let you know outcome later.
say, just realized Iolite is 528Mhz, I'm able to get it at RMB 1.8k ~ USD225, was my favorite choice before laying eyes on Blackstone.
hmmmmmm. android good on ELF eh............
ok, study study study...................
Hahaha, you are from China?
I have so many China friends at my country in Singapore.
They do so well in maths and chinese, good talent!
--
To be frank with you, just choose a phone you like, and suit your budget and get it. Its too hard catching what is new as there is something new everyday.
Even for myself, im studying too. So ya, money is quite hard to come sometimes.
Iolite sound great, Blackstone is better.
Blackstone has so many apps available, and they have more support in their community there.
Have you checked out the android phones, htc magic and htc dream?
They are quite cool.
Best Of Luck in Studies,
Jeremy
Hi again
Actually I'm Malaysian, working in HK, often visit to factory in China, while my main customers in Taiwan, finally with little visit to customers in Japan.
Anyway, I still like the Iolite design, but screen is not big enough , while blackstones screen is big and nice, but complaining it can't fit into pocket comfortable. Anyway......
I haven't got a chance to study the android, magic or dream. Too busy working. But will someday.
Yes, best of luck to studies.
Oh, all the best for your dream phone!
Guys, I need a bit of advice please.
After an accidentally botched radio install (phone fell and disconnected from USB whilst flashing), my HD2 won't boot. It gets stuck on the multi-coloured 'initial screen' (for want of a better expression) with 'SPL-1.42.HPSL XE CotullaHSPL' on it.
I'm looking to do one of two things, either rescue it, or, PREFERABLY kill it completely so that the device does not even boot to that screen. I know that sounds like a strange preference, but that would be ideal for me. Have you got any suggestions at all guys?
If you want to send it back and get a new one, then you definetly have to remove HSPL. Get HSPL2 and try to flash 1.42.0000. If it works, your problem is solved! Simply take it to customer service, complain about it not booting all of a sudden and you`ll either get a new one or get yours fixed.
However... if you fail removing HSPL and have no other option available, try and microwave it, literally. Put it in a microwave oven until it refuses to boot, then take it back to customer service complaining about how it suddely stopped working.
Best of luck!
Quite LITERALLY put it in the microwave and turn the microwave on?? For how long? Won't it just 'melt' the innerds, or blow up?
Yep. I did this to mine in 10 second intervals. The first time nothing happened, it just got hot. The second time, the vibrations stopped working. The third time nothing. The fourth time the screen started to fail (but STILL booted into the bootloader). The fifth time it only booted with a white screen and I stopped, as I had acheived what I wanted and the screen was already pretty damaged.
Thanks, a very, er, interesting suggestion. However I want the phone to look the same, i.e undamaged! But be bricked. If it's not possible, then I'll have to try and rescue the poor thing .
Best decision you could take. Hope you succeed!

Does it show USB on the bootloader(multi-color) screen?
If it does you can flash a new radio/rom and maybe fix it ...
Or Flash from SDcard
I've managed to flash it to stock 1.43 from SD card, which appears to have also removed the HSPL. This is a win. However, I would still like to brick the phone so I can get a brand new replacement... I really could use a sure fire (but safe, and does not cause hw damage) brick method.
hspl, task29, remove hspl. you`ll get a white htc logo screen without the ability to enter bootloader.

A friend (and yes - it was actually an friend and not me!) allegedly did this:
He took the socket from the end of an extension lead, put the plug into the mains socket and then VERY CARFULLY and very briefly touched the bare Live and Neutral wires onto the battery terminals in the phone.
240V into the circuit board apparently did the trick
**** Disclaimer ****
I think he was very silly to do this cos he could've hurt himself so please don't follow his example!
**** End Of Disclaimer ****
Hmm, yes, a method that doesn't involve microwaves or 240 volts would be preferable .
