This started happening yesterday and I am stumped.
My Vario II with standard T-mobile wm6 lost the phone connection. I thought nothing of it and did a soft reset. Connection back.
About an hour later i noticed it had dropped out again. Soft reset and it was back.
This keeps happening now.
The strange thing is that although the phone connection is not working the data connection is. I can still download and send emails but when I try to make a phone call I get nothing.
Any help appreciated

Is anyone else having any trouble with TMobile's GPRS? I haven't been able to get a GPRS connection since December 1st. I have had a open ticket with TMobile since the 4th. My connection tries and tries and tries but eventually comes back and says that the answering modem has disconnected. Not getting any help from Customer Service or the Wireless Data Group. 3rd Level Wireless Data Group has supposedly escalated this ticket to their Network Engineers but that was on Friday and I haven't heard from anyone since then. I've been through the standard check your connection settings and such several times and even did a hard reset on Saturday thinking that maybe something in my OS was screwy. Any suggestions or ideas?
I have the same problem. I can get connected to WAP.VOICESTREAM.COM, but that does me no good, can't visit webpages or utilize IM/POP services.
wap.voicestream.com working perfectly here..
unlimited, free gprs is the way to go.
make sure wap browsing is activated on your account.

Yes have tried both of those and still get error that remote modem has disconnected.
I'm getting this too, I'm a T-Mobile UK customer... I was on the train yesterday, and using MSN Messenger at the time, and got disconnected from GPRS... Now I get the same "the answering modem has disconnected" message... I use AP general.t-mobile.uk... Anyone got any ideas?

My radio must have been messed up as I ordered another phone and it fixed my problem.
sometimes, when this happens, you can fix it by powering down the radio (which does more that just a reset or a radio off/on). To do this, simply open the SIM door and close it again. Note: this also soft resets the PDA part but there's no data-loss since its 'soft' on the pda-side.

Thanks, I'll give this a try
I think it may be something to do with the ROM/Radio stack version... just need to find a "good" version that works well on T-Mobile UK
Yeah it was my radio that was the problem. I tried the sim open door thing to no avail. I finally got tmobile to send me a replacement and that fixed the problem.

Actually, I doubt it was your radio... I was having similar problems in the similar timeframe with BOTH my XDA and my Sony, which I use as a wireless modem. Started asking around to other non-XDA T-Mo users if they were having data problems, and we all seemed to be having the same problem... Very spotty network performance on both wap.*** and internet2.***. Either no connection, or 2kbps throughput max. I also traveled to other cities (incl. Chicago) during this time and head the same trouble everywhere. At 2kbps, most web sites and mail servers timeout before a complete send, so both my devices were virtually useless.
I too contacted T-mo, ended up with a tier-3 trouble ticket with an estimated call back of TWO WEEKS. Still haven't heard back, but it's back to normal (+/- 40kbps) on both devices. The tier-2 guys denied there was any NW problems, but the truth was obvious to me and others.
Still some trouble spots throughout the day, but they never seem to last more than a few minutes. The date range I had the problems corresponded almost perfectly with your dates, hence my doubt that it was the radio.
I too was having problems with GPRS and wap with T-Mobile the last few days.
Well the only solution I was able to achieve was somewhat drastic but not too bad.
I got SMS, GPRS, WAP, and CSD dial up working again by using Pocket Backup.
1st - I made a full back up of everything
2nd - I did a full hard reset
3rd - with a "virgin" machine - I was finally able to to SMS & connect GPRS & CSD
4th - I then partially restored my box - by omitting MMS, Inbox, Connections, temp files, and other non-essential network items
5th - I then reloaded my email settings
As of last night and all day today - this has been fully successful.
I attribute the loss of SMS, GPRS, WAP, and CSD to some software I loaded that may have hosed it all up. The restore process fixed it so I am now happy again!
FYI
JB
I have the Same Problem, but I Fixed with a SoftReset.
¡¡Salud!!-2
Try using....
Try using the Radio upgrade from 4.01.00. It works a lot better for me. I was needing t-mobile's advanced wireless data group to reset my internet connection every time i tried to log on a second time. I'm using PPC 2002 and that radio upgrade, and i couldn't be happier with my phone!
Hi everyone,
Apologies if this is covered somewhere and I've missed it, but I'm in a bit of a pickle here.
After running Registry Wizard for the first time, I suddenly have no Data Access. I didn't change anything to do with the GPRS network, but I'm getting the "Cannot connect with current connection settings" error. Upon checking the Comm Manager, the Data Access icon isn't even an option.
I'm running an MDA G3 with the latest official update from T-Mobile's website. I've been thinking about going to WM6 and if a hard reset is required, I might as well.
Thanks in advance and sorry if this is an RTFM question.
Jason
same issue here and no data access after wm6 upgrade. I have been traveling across country and they told me i had the wrong plan (t zones) made some backend change and it works.. however with registry wizard i restored after using it and it worked fine - it DEFINITELY does something with the latest tmo rom that kills data access, unfortunately i was in a crunch and had no time ti figure out what that was - turning everthing off didn't repair it either - i ended up having to reset.
Problems
my settings were working fine, then I made some changes yesterday and no data access, tried everything, numerous soft resets, then 2 hard resets, eventually I did no reinstall Registry Wizard and everything is fine.
Well, I ended up needing a refresh from T-Mobile. It's working fine now. The tech I talked to was super cool. She said they were NOT going to update the MDA to WM6 and that she had "already done it herself" a few weeks ago.
So, at least I didn't have to hide anything.
Speaking of, where in WM6 do I need to enter the data for the MMS server?
Have you'll withnissed that sometimes the data connection doesn't work anymore?
This happend to me 3 times. And everytime I had to hard-reset to fix it.
2Morrow I wanted to start my phone, and the phone started but the screen was blank.
So I soft-resetted it. In the night my phone was on 3G/H. My phone is almost 24/7 on 3G/H. My provider has no data limit.
so what is here the problem? Or do you guys also withniss the same problem......
i just cant get the data connection to turn on although i'v updated the phone ive did all the settings right but cant get this to turn on i pick up my internet provider and set unmts and gsm to proper setting but it still wont turn on says some thing about gprs 3g settings. i do have an h constantly next to the signal. i have generic uk version pls anyone i need some advice , i also have 3g sim card so that takes care of that. thanks

Haven't experienced the same issues that required hard reset to fix it (had an issue that required a soft reset tho, but rarely).
Have been using it since Oct 09.
soft reset is not necessary, just need to turn off and on the data connections in the comm manager.
I turned off all connections before walking into a building on my college campus today since I know I receive no service there. When I walked out I tried turning on my connections and now am getting ZERO SERVICE. When I try to connect it says: "The answering modem has disconnected. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings."
I've tried resetting but it keeps giving me the same message. I performed several soft resets and even removed the battery a couple of times. The phone works fine, I am just not receiving any connection service.
Does anybody have an ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks!

What about bettery? I met same problem once, since my battery is low. After recharging battery, everything back to normal.
still not working
no, i removed the battery several times as well. Its not the phone apparently. I took it to two T-Mo stores and both couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. They gave me new sim cards, and it still would not connect. Tried sim cards in different phones and it wouldnt connect on those phones either. So now i have to wait because it can take up to 2 hours for a new sim card to work :/
First, what ROM are you running? Second, have you tried a hard reset?
If all else fails, then warranty exchange it.
~Jasecloud4.
Havent done a hard reset yet since they told me it could take up to 2 hours for the network to pick up my new sim card. And I am running ROM Version 2.13.531.1
Since your sim wouldn't work in the other phones, it's either the sim or some issue with account-level settings.
Thats what I'm thinking. I just did a hard reset and took my phone back to default settings hoping that it would fix the issue, but it didn't help at all. I'm going to go back to T-Mobile this afternoon and try to see what is up with my sim card. Being phoneless for 2 days is horrible

Try this before you return it because mine has done this a few times. I never tried hard resetting it to fix it.
Go into start setting wireless controls. then click on the left side of the data connection box, not on the switch. That will bring up the connections screen. click Manage existing connections then it will show Tmobile data. click edit, then just ok or next through all of the screens. on the last screen it will be blank for username and password or whatever, but that's ok. just click ok or next.
Now try to enable your data connection..
I know this sounds dumb, but humor me because it works for me every time.
Tried doing that, but now when I try to connect it states: "Cannot Connect: The answering modem has disconnected."

The fact that it changed something makes me think that Tmobile needs to go in and update the information...
The message you are getting now is exactly what I get. Try to do it one more time for kicks and see if it connects. If not, take it into Tmobile and see if they know the credentials needed to set that up manually.
Yeah, T-Mobile couldn't figure out what the issue was with my account/simcards/phone. So they are going to ship me a brand new HD2
Hi all,
I appreciate this may be more of a network than a hardware problem but I thought I'd check anyway. This morning I lost data connectivity on my SGS. Phone shows strong signal but I can't access any web sites or sync with mail etc. Looks like the last sync was about 8am this morning. I contacted T-Mobile who suggested I manually reenter all the internet/MMS settings, which I dutifully did but still nothing. The phone works fine, I'vemade and received calls and sent and received sms. I can't figure out what this may be. It certainly doesn't appear to be a hardware problem but T-Mob couldn't initially see any problems eitehr. Does anyone have any experience of this sort of problem?
Many thanks.
Reboot your device.
I faced the same problem earlier. I deleted GPRS settings and recreated a new one. Then rebooted the phone. Everything worked fine.
