Tmobile GPRS - Networking

Is anyone else having any trouble with TMobile's GPRS? I haven't been able to get a GPRS connection since December 1st. I have had a open ticket with TMobile since the 4th. My connection tries and tries and tries but eventually comes back and says that the answering modem has disconnected. Not getting any help from Customer Service or the Wireless Data Group. 3rd Level Wireless Data Group has supposedly escalated this ticket to their Network Engineers but that was on Friday and I haven't heard from anyone since then. I've been through the standard check your connection settings and such several times and even did a hard reset on Saturday thinking that maybe something in my OS was screwy. Any suggestions or ideas?

I have the same problem. I can get connected to WAP.VOICESTREAM.COM, but that does me no good, can't visit webpages or utilize IM/POP services.

wap.voicestream.com working perfectly here..
unlimited, free gprs is the way to go.
make sure wap browsing is activated on your account.

Yes have tried both of those and still get error that remote modem has disconnected.

I'm getting this too, I'm a T-Mobile UK customer... I was on the train yesterday, and using MSN Messenger at the time, and got disconnected from GPRS... Now I get the same "the answering modem has disconnected" message... I use AP general.t-mobile.uk... Anyone got any ideas?

My radio must have been messed up as I ordered another phone and it fixed my problem.

sometimes, when this happens, you can fix it by powering down the radio (which does more that just a reset or a radio off/on). To do this, simply open the SIM door and close it again. Note: this also soft resets the PDA part but there's no data-loss since its 'soft' on the pda-side.

Thanks, I'll give this a try
I think it may be something to do with the ROM/Radio stack version... just need to find a "good" version that works well on T-Mobile UK

Yeah it was my radio that was the problem. I tried the sim open door thing to no avail. I finally got tmobile to send me a replacement and that fixed the problem.

Actually, I doubt it was your radio... I was having similar problems in the similar timeframe with BOTH my XDA and my Sony, which I use as a wireless modem. Started asking around to other non-XDA T-Mo users if they were having data problems, and we all seemed to be having the same problem... Very spotty network performance on both wap.*** and internet2.***. Either no connection, or 2kbps throughput max. I also traveled to other cities (incl. Chicago) during this time and head the same trouble everywhere. At 2kbps, most web sites and mail servers timeout before a complete send, so both my devices were virtually useless.
I too contacted T-mo, ended up with a tier-3 trouble ticket with an estimated call back of TWO WEEKS. Still haven't heard back, but it's back to normal (+/- 40kbps) on both devices. The tier-2 guys denied there was any NW problems, but the truth was obvious to me and others.
Still some trouble spots throughout the day, but they never seem to last more than a few minutes. The date range I had the problems corresponded almost perfectly with your dates, hence my doubt that it was the radio.

I too was having problems with GPRS and wap with T-Mobile the last few days.
Well the only solution I was able to achieve was somewhat drastic but not too bad.
I got SMS, GPRS, WAP, and CSD dial up working again by using Pocket Backup.
1st - I made a full back up of everything
2nd - I did a full hard reset
3rd - with a "virgin" machine - I was finally able to to SMS & connect GPRS & CSD
4th - I then partially restored my box - by omitting MMS, Inbox, Connections, temp files, and other non-essential network items
5th - I then reloaded my email settings
As of last night and all day today - this has been fully successful.
I attribute the loss of SMS, GPRS, WAP, and CSD to some software I loaded that may have hosed it all up. The restore process fixed it so I am now happy again!
FYI
JB

I have the Same Problem, but I Fixed with a SoftReset.
¡¡Salud!!-2

Try using....
Try using the Radio upgrade from 4.01.00. It works a lot better for me. I was needing t-mobile's advanced wireless data group to reset my internet connection every time i tried to log on a second time. I'm using PPC 2002 and that radio upgrade, and i couldn't be happier with my phone!

Settings are:

Blank on all authentication info.
Recieve a "The answering modem has disconnected. To check your modem settings......." message with the topion to dismiss. I know I must be missing something, the default settings should work. I am in Northwest Florida in an area covered by the GPRS internet, although Powertel is shown as my local GSM provider.
I've had it working before, on the stock Tmobile ROM, then the upgrade off the site, but since the PPC2003 upgrade its been no dice.
Any ideas? TMobile is stumped, along with the other guys at my Circuit City (we retail T-M there, and the rep and I are both on the new test ROM on our PPC's). His however, works.
Try a soft reset first and if that fails, changing your AP to internet3.voicestream.com or wap.voicestream.com and see if that helps.
HTH
I can connect when I tried wap.voicestream.com, however, I am unable to load any pages or connect to anything. Much like a PC which cannot get any DNS resolution.
Well thats a step in the right direction at least, how about emaill and MSN Messenger! Are they working? Also try running welcome.exe thats located in your windows root folder.

Same Here
If I connect VIA the T-Mobile VPN I get "answering modem has disconnected".
And if I connect Via T-Mobile Internet it connects but I cant go anywhere, either via web or IM.
Incidentally to get in to manage the connections, when you click on settings it doesnt automatically give you the option to change existing settings, you need to go into add new and cancel and then the option to manage existing connections appears.....weird...
Anyway, anyone any suggestions.
Also running SBP's GPRS Monitor V. 2 Build 224
No ability to connect to anything, HTTP, or AIM type service when on WAP. internet2 and internet3 don't answer at all.
If any US T-Mobile customer is running the 4.00.10 software and is able to connect to GPRS, please list all settings used to connect, in the connection settings, GPRS authorization type, etc; just list as many settings as possible.
I had someone in my CC the other day who told me about the 4.00.10 ROM being available here, and he was on GPRS. If I see him again, I will make sure to clone his settings, or backup his ROM.
Sounds like its about time to try a hard reset also whats you radio stack version?
HTHH
Im using the included 6.24.00 update radio stack. Just completed hard reset on device, still no go. I'll try getting in touch with T-Mobile, I'll just have to neglect mentioning the ROM version Im running. Doesn't seem to be too many differences in the setup of the connections, just in getting them to work
OK, now whats the status on your radio light does it come on at all?
Also what radio version were you running before the upgrade?
If it was the sock T-Mobile version I'd try installing the newer AT&T stack.
Anyhow if you would like to give that a try drop me an email at [email protected] and I'll forward you the needed four files. As a matter of fact I just downgraded back to the AT&T stack myself just to see if there were going to be any problems and the downgrade went without a hitch.

Hmmm....
Mine has started working now!
I did uninstall the SPB GPRS Monitor, not sure if that has anything to do with it!?! Need to play with re-installing it I guess.
I turned off AUTO PICK for the GPRS connection and forced it to use internet2.voicestream.com
Yay!
Ok, crap, after further playing it is back to how it was previously...i.e. not working again!
Are there any network problems right now?

No luck from TMobile, all looks ok.

Still no luck, same error message, all other functions seem to work the same as before woth the test radio stack.

I too am having the same results.... that is intermittent signal under GPRS. I have actually logged into MSMessenger using the internet2.voicestream.com w/o authentication
...but the whole thing sucks. I am in Atlanta... where are others :?:
Perhaps it is engineering at the Mobile Receiving end :?: Is that posible?
Is there a RSU that is working well under 4.00.10?
Still nothing here. All I can hope is that the TMobile Rep gets to Circuit City soon, and perhaps I can get some help from him (he has PPC2003 on his MDA)
internet3.voicestream.com works every time. I never could get internet2 to work even on the 3.4 original ROM here or in the U.S.
Later..............
I had a lot of trouble too. I went to GPRS Authentication Icon and set to PAP authentication. Now I can connect and actually get it to function for short periods of time. I suspect some problem with Tmobile is causing the intermittent connection loss. The device stays connected but connectivity dispappears. I tried ping tests and they start with semi-acceptable rates then fade away. If it doesn't get better, then I am taking the internet service off of the unit.
I cant believe Im about to say this
As much as I have liked Powertel/ VoiceStream / T-mobile..
They are starting to SUCK.
Customer service
Call connectivity
GPRS
I have had problems maintainging a GPRS connection.
I found that turning the radio on and off revived the connection somtimes.
Other times a soft reset was needed.
To anyone that has a problem Id recommend this...
Call T-mobile talk to WDG about your connectivity problem
next
Go to a retail store or aquire another GPRS phone and test connectivity with it.
Neither of the above solve the problem
It IS a T-MOBILE issue

Im not sure if they are saturated or what.
But..
I see no escuse for their problems.
I have had GPRS since day one and it has been flaky since day one.
period.
This is consistent EVERYWHERE I travel to in the US.
Note: I also have voice problems.
Im on my 5 XDA replacement. I havent tried 2003 as its not past Beta and I have enough problems with 2002 to not introduce something that is worse.
Does anyone know when 2003 will be released?

google me this...

I have tried this a couple of different times. On both the 9100 and k-jam.
Using TMO GPRS: I can pull down just about every other website fine, BUT not google.
cannot open www.google.com/pda completely. only 1kb will load (search box and button) but the google graphic does not display. when I hit search, it times out. If I connect to wifi, google/pda works fine (the entire site works fine on wifi)
I can go into preference and change my display settings to HTML or xhtml while on wifi, but disconnect from wifi and no google while on GPRS. I can search fine on yahoo or altavista, just not google.
It did work at one time, and then magically stopped working.... I did hard reset and it worked for a while and then stopped. I find it strange that neither device will pull up google. Any ideas?

hard reset and still cant google on gprs. xhtml, pda, html. errrrr

Can you get to other sites ok? Are you sure you have your settings correct? Have you tried calling the network provider, maybe they block it to make you use something else?
yep, every site I can pull up fine.... yahoo, altavista, intellicast... even my asp webmail. Google is the only one. I even changed the user agent to look like ie 6 in tweaks2k2 and no difference in google but yahoo was fooled. I doubt TMO would be blocking, and I just tried thunderhawk II and google works fine. Thunderhawk is upside down and doesn't let me really use a keyboard... maybe there are options to change that, I just installed it 2 minutes ago.
What I find is strange and is both my kjam and my qtek9100 cannot surf google. how can that be? I have unlimited TMO and use internet2.voicestream.com with no other settings. Is anyone using the wap proxy? Maybe that is the difference.

ahhh.. maybe because I am roaming? maybe not... I will be back in tmo area this weekend and will try again. Jeff, thanks for the info. I started a more thorough search after I read your comment and found a few things below. It has been one of these issues I have been meaning to take a look at for a week and finally dug into it this morning... and became more frustrated as the day went on.

I had the same issue everytime I travelled. (I am on T-Mo) No matter where I went outside of my "home" area, I could not do google searches. It drove me crazy as well.

GPRS connection doesn't work after being connected for a long time

Hi,
I'm using a Magician with WM2003
I have a GPRS connection setup for with t-mobile using a proxy.
If I'm not connected it works great- I press send/receive for my e-mail it connects and gets my messages just fine.
If I do it again 5 minutes later also fine.
The problem is after a long time the connection is still active, but when I go to do a Send/Receive-
I get an "unable to connect to the incoming mail server" message. All my other internet apps also will not work. If I turn on flight mode and then turn it off (to disconnect from my GPRS connection) and then try the internet again- it will work fine.
I think what triggers this is going into an area with no service. The GPRS connection stays active- and when I try to use it (even when I'm back in an area with service) it won't work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Daniel
I found this, may help ....
Look for "KeepAliveTime" on the right side of this page
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa915651.aspx
It may help, good luck!
I have this same issue with the htc touch. Not sure what to do about it. I see the keepalivetime but it isn't a hack or a reg edit (that I can tell).

Exactly the same here - issues with push mail and when using messenger have to turn flight mode on and off to reconnect to the service - only been like this for few weeks now - never used to be a problem before
So it looks like T-mob have changed something recently. I have been searching various forums trying to find an answer but no luck. TMob reckon nothing has changed when i called them.
I too have the same problem and I am also on t-mob UK.
I will call Tmob again tomorrow and hopefully get through to someone in their tech dept. I knew it had to be Tmob, I had changed nothing on my handset, but they refused to acknowledge that anyone else had a problem.
I use cingular/att with these issues so it's not just tmobile.

You are not alone here....... nearly every day a soft reset
Also the same with my trinity - but not so often
Having spoken to T-Mob UK, the general thinking is they are imposed restrictions on usage for the basic walk and web service. This includes IMessenger and push e-mail (I knew about IM bit not Push Mail!)
The engineer seems to think the connection will be frozen if the network detects
a IM service (the heatbeat of push mail mail looks to be included in this).
Solution: Upgrade to Walk and Web Plus (extra £5) per month.
I have been given a free month to try and see if this solves my issues. I will let you know how it goes.
Now this could be T-mob fobbing me off and trying to get an extra five quid off me, lets wait and see. Any of you guys on the plus service already??
I was guessing that might be the case, let know how it goes if I need to upgrade
I use the mediamax bundle with cingular/att. I wonder if this is indeed the case. I would need to upgrade to the pda plan, which would be pricey. Mabey that's the case?
Well, I'm afraid it was a nice story that Tmob told me, but it hasn't sorted the problem! I will keep an eye on it over the next few days just in case it takes a few days to set their end, but as of today I still loose connection.
OK, finally got it sorted....! I have GPRS connected all the time now without loosing connection.
Looks like T-mob were telling me the truth. After talking to a T-mobile engineer, he confirms that they now have the network infrastructure to detect and block services that are not covered in certain WnW packages. This went live just over a month ago.
The basic WnW package does not allow Push Email & IM, if detected the network will block your IP. Turning off and on the radio will give you a new IP, so will work again until detected.
For Push Email you will need the WnW plus service. Now the interesting part is if you add on the plus service (a bolt on) it will still not work. You will need to add the package onto your contract not as a bolt on.
Many people have just paid extra for the bolt on but the T-Mob system doesnt recognise this and still blocks Push Mail & IM.
It doesnt cost any extra or change your contract length, its just a different way the customer service people upgrade your account.
Unfortunately the customer service rep that upgraded my account did not know this, but the engineer new straight away.
Hope this helps people.
Thanks for the info.....I use ATT/Cingular. What are the odds they started this same thing a month ago? I've been noticing this problem for about that length of time.
Hi all!
It´s the same for me
I´m using Eplus with Cortado email push in Germany
Every morning a soft reset
Any solutions possible within the registry

Data connection problem!! PLEASE HELP!!

ok, so today i was showing off my phone..but then accidently dropped it...
the battery and the cover all flew off the phone...but this wasnt the first time this happen.
being embarrassed, i picked up my x1 and put it back together.
tho my x1 suffer from a minor scratch, everything(software and hardware) was working fine
the only problem now is that my data (edge) service doesnt work. i tried soft resetting and hard resetting. but tho i am connected to my service provider, t-mobile(USA), i have no data service. is there anything wrong with my x1? could sumthing inside broke?
Note: prior to dropping my phone my internet was working fine, so nothing was wrong with my data plan.
Thanks for your time,
Same thing happened to me today on T-mobile USA. Were you connecting over wap.voicestream.com? I'm not sure, but T-mo might have changed something with that server today. Therefore, it might be a coincidence that this happened after you dropped your phone. See if you can fix the problem by going to settings>connections>connections>advanced>select networks>my ISP then click edit, then click edit again, then hit next, then change wap.voicestream.com to internet2.voicestream.com. That solved the problem for me.

having problems receiving and sending mms

Having a lot of problems with my mms. When I send a mms most of the time it wont send and when it does it takes awhile for it to send out. And the problem I am having with receiving is I get the message but I cant download the actual attachment sometimes. I had this same problem on my touch pro 2 and now I am facing it on my hd2. I've been called T-mobile several times about this issue and its really pissing me the hell off because their not doing anything about it. I am running regular stock rom. I also have a new sim card.
When I had that problem on my TP2, it went away after a hard-reset.
Did the tmo tech support walk you through making sure your network settings were all correct?

Is your T-Mobile Data connection setup to use epc.tmobile.com? (settings-connections-manage existing connections) That's the first setting they should have checked with you, there may be others that could affect MMS send/receive capabilites, I'm not sure.
