upgraded to the 4.00.10, and have been unable to connect since.
Settings are:
Cellular Line (GPRS)
internet2.voicestream.com
Blank on all authentication info.
Recieve a "The answering modem has disconnected. To check your modem settings......." message with the topion to dismiss. I know I must be missing something, the default settings should work. I am in Northwest Florida in an area covered by the GPRS internet, although Powertel is shown as my local GSM provider.
I've had it working before, on the stock Tmobile ROM, then the upgrade off the site, but since the PPC2003 upgrade its been no dice.
Any ideas? TMobile is stumped, along with the other guys at my Circuit City (we retail T-M there, and the rep and I are both on the new test ROM on our PPC's). His however, works.
Try a soft reset first and if that fails, changing your AP to internet3.voicestream.com or wap.voicestream.com and see if that helps.
HTH
I can connect when I tried wap.voicestream.com, however, I am unable to load any pages or connect to anything. Much like a PC which cannot get any DNS resolution.
Well thats a step in the right direction at least, how about emaill and MSN Messenger! Are they working? Also try running welcome.exe thats located in your windows root folder.

Same Here
If I connect VIA the T-Mobile VPN I get "answering modem has disconnected".
And if I connect Via T-Mobile Internet it connects but I cant go anywhere, either via web or IM.
Incidentally to get in to manage the connections, when you click on settings it doesnt automatically give you the option to change existing settings, you need to go into add new and cancel and then the option to manage existing connections appears.....weird...
Anyway, anyone any suggestions.
Also running SBP's GPRS Monitor V. 2 Build 224
No ability to connect to anything, HTTP, or AIM type service when on WAP. internet2 and internet3 don't answer at all.
If any US T-Mobile customer is running the 4.00.10 software and is able to connect to GPRS, please list all settings used to connect, in the connection settings, GPRS authorization type, etc; just list as many settings as possible.
I had someone in my CC the other day who told me about the 4.00.10 ROM being available here, and he was on GPRS. If I see him again, I will make sure to clone his settings, or backup his ROM.
Sounds like its about time to try a hard reset also whats you radio stack version?
HTHH
Im using the included 6.24.00 update radio stack. Just completed hard reset on device, still no go. I'll try getting in touch with T-Mobile, I'll just have to neglect mentioning the ROM version Im running. Doesn't seem to be too many differences in the setup of the connections, just in getting them to work
OK, now whats the status on your radio light does it come on at all?
Also what radio version were you running before the upgrade?
If it was the sock T-Mobile version I'd try installing the newer AT&T stack.
Anyhow if you would like to give that a try drop me an email at [email protected] and I'll forward you the needed four files. As a matter of fact I just downgraded back to the AT&T stack myself just to see if there were going to be any problems and the downgrade went without a hitch.

Hmmm....
Mine has started working now!
I did uninstall the SPB GPRS Monitor, not sure if that has anything to do with it!?! Need to play with re-installing it I guess.
I turned off AUTO PICK for the GPRS connection and forced it to use internet2.voicestream.com
Yay!
Ok, crap, after further playing it is back to how it was previously...i.e. not working again!
Are there any network problems right now?
emailed.
No luck from TMobile, all looks ok.
Applied the AT&T radio stack with the following results:
Still no luck, same error message, all other functions seem to work the same as before woth the test radio stack.

I too am having the same results.... that is intermittent signal under GPRS. I have actually logged into MSMessenger using the internet2.voicestream.com w/o authentication
...but the whole thing sucks. I am in Atlanta... where are others :?:
Perhaps it is engineering at the Mobile Receiving end :?: Is that posible?
Is there a RSU that is working well under 4.00.10?
Still nothing here. All I can hope is that the TMobile Rep gets to Circuit City soon, and perhaps I can get some help from him (he has PPC2003 on his MDA)
internet3.voicestream.com works every time. I never could get internet2 to work even on the 3.4 original ROM here or in the U.S.
Later..............
I had a lot of trouble too. I went to GPRS Authentication Icon and set to PAP authentication. Now I can connect and actually get it to function for short periods of time. I suspect some problem with Tmobile is causing the intermittent connection loss. The device stays connected but connectivity dispappears. I tried ping tests and they start with semi-acceptable rates then fade away. If it doesn't get better, then I am taking the internet service off of the unit.
I cant believe Im about to say this
As much as I have liked Powertel/ VoiceStream / T-mobile..
They are starting to SUCK.
Customer service
Call connectivity
GPRS
I have had problems maintainging a GPRS connection.
I found that turning the radio on and off revived the connection somtimes.
Other times a soft reset was needed.
To anyone that has a problem Id recommend this...
Call T-mobile talk to WDG about your connectivity problem
next
Go to a retail store or aquire another GPRS phone and test connectivity with it.
Neither of the above solve the problem
It IS a T-MOBILE issue
complain complain complain.
Im not sure if they are saturated or what.
But..
I see no escuse for their problems.
I have had GPRS since day one and it has been flaky since day one.
period.
This is consistent EVERYWHERE I travel to in the US.
Note: I also have voice problems.
Im on my 5 XDA replacement. I havent tried 2003 as its not past Beta and I have enough problems with 2002 to not introduce something that is worse.
Does anyone know when 2003 will be released?

Is anyone else having any trouble with TMobile's GPRS? I haven't been able to get a GPRS connection since December 1st. I have had a open ticket with TMobile since the 4th. My connection tries and tries and tries but eventually comes back and says that the answering modem has disconnected. Not getting any help from Customer Service or the Wireless Data Group. 3rd Level Wireless Data Group has supposedly escalated this ticket to their Network Engineers but that was on Friday and I haven't heard from anyone since then. I've been through the standard check your connection settings and such several times and even did a hard reset on Saturday thinking that maybe something in my OS was screwy. Any suggestions or ideas?
I have the same problem. I can get connected to WAP.VOICESTREAM.COM, but that does me no good, can't visit webpages or utilize IM/POP services.
wap.voicestream.com working perfectly here..
unlimited, free gprs is the way to go.
make sure wap browsing is activated on your account.

Yes have tried both of those and still get error that remote modem has disconnected.
I'm getting this too, I'm a T-Mobile UK customer... I was on the train yesterday, and using MSN Messenger at the time, and got disconnected from GPRS... Now I get the same "the answering modem has disconnected" message... I use AP general.t-mobile.uk... Anyone got any ideas?

My radio must have been messed up as I ordered another phone and it fixed my problem.
sometimes, when this happens, you can fix it by powering down the radio (which does more that just a reset or a radio off/on). To do this, simply open the SIM door and close it again. Note: this also soft resets the PDA part but there's no data-loss since its 'soft' on the pda-side.

Thanks, I'll give this a try
I think it may be something to do with the ROM/Radio stack version... just need to find a "good" version that works well on T-Mobile UK
Yeah it was my radio that was the problem. I tried the sim open door thing to no avail. I finally got tmobile to send me a replacement and that fixed the problem.

Actually, I doubt it was your radio... I was having similar problems in the similar timeframe with BOTH my XDA and my Sony, which I use as a wireless modem. Started asking around to other non-XDA T-Mo users if they were having data problems, and we all seemed to be having the same problem... Very spotty network performance on both wap.*** and internet2.***. Either no connection, or 2kbps throughput max. I also traveled to other cities (incl. Chicago) during this time and head the same trouble everywhere. At 2kbps, most web sites and mail servers timeout before a complete send, so both my devices were virtually useless.
I too contacted T-mo, ended up with a tier-3 trouble ticket with an estimated call back of TWO WEEKS. Still haven't heard back, but it's back to normal (+/- 40kbps) on both devices. The tier-2 guys denied there was any NW problems, but the truth was obvious to me and others.
Still some trouble spots throughout the day, but they never seem to last more than a few minutes. The date range I had the problems corresponded almost perfectly with your dates, hence my doubt that it was the radio.
I too was having problems with GPRS and wap with T-Mobile the last few days.
Well the only solution I was able to achieve was somewhat drastic but not too bad.
I got SMS, GPRS, WAP, and CSD dial up working again by using Pocket Backup.
1st - I made a full back up of everything
2nd - I did a full hard reset
3rd - with a "virgin" machine - I was finally able to to SMS & connect GPRS & CSD
4th - I then partially restored my box - by omitting MMS, Inbox, Connections, temp files, and other non-essential network items
5th - I then reloaded my email settings
As of last night and all day today - this has been fully successful.
I attribute the loss of SMS, GPRS, WAP, and CSD to some software I loaded that may have hosed it all up. The restore process fixed it so I am now happy again!
FYI
JB
I have the Same Problem, but I Fixed with a SoftReset.
¡¡Salud!!-2
Try using....
Try using the Radio upgrade from 4.01.00. It works a lot better for me. I was needing t-mobile's advanced wireless data group to reset my internet connection every time i tried to log on a second time. I'm using PPC 2002 and that radio upgrade, and i couldn't be happier with my phone!
Since rebooting my O2 XDA Exec into Corporate mode, I seem to have no GPRS nor 3G setup as neither will connect to send MMS messages - any ideas?
Dude, corporate mode does not install any of your gprs and mms settings.
If you installed this mode to get rid of the dreadful o2 interface, you would be better installing basic mode.
This gets rid of the o2 rubbish but installs your gprs and mms settings.
Fatzzz
If your interested i have made a cab file with just the O2 connections settings app in it. None of the other Active stuff is there. I did try to upload it to tekguru but had problems so i have it on one of my websites here.
http://caravan-smart.co.uk/xda-exec.asp
Ahhhhh nice one dude, very helpful - just got to hope my area has 3G coverage now!!
Nice one - so after a hard reset you install corporate mode from the extended rom, then install your cab in personal and all will be set up? Does that include MMS as well as I had real troubles getting Pocket Outlook to see MMS account once in corporate mode and soft reset.
Will try it and see how it goes!
Nice one dude,
Fin
NO MATE, I think you'll find its BASIC mode as the chap says - Personal will shove all the O2 crap on there, whereas BASIC just puts the GPRS and 3G settings on - just done it and it works fine!!
HOWEVER when I try to start a 3G video call, it states "The 3G network is not available....", I don't quite get this 3G, do I have one connection that is either GPRS or 3G depending on signal, or are there two connections here, if so, how do I use each?
Anyone on O2 managed to get O2 Video Calling to work to another Exec?
Thanks mate!
No, I was referring to Dingo's cab, when you hard reset you select corporate mode with the code 0506 then run his cab, then as he says on his site, click Personal this time as his cab just contains the Connection settings. Just done it and all seems to be working well - thanks Dingo!!
Thanks for the CAB file, Dingo. Will try it out at the next hard reset.
Not sure if its me, but Hotmail from Pocket MSN seems to be playing up now - can anyone else report the same thing? It keeps freezing when I click on it and Pocket Outlook doesn't see the account.
Fin
Yep I have tried the O2 Exec to Exec video dialling. It was nice to try, but wasn't that great. And I think its now 50p per minute, so won't be doing it again in a hurry.
Cheers
Nasdaq
No apparently until March its charged at the same price as Voice Calls, also can be part of inclusive minutes for voice calls - after that time it'll be 50p as you say.
My mistake, was told differently by a friend. Still won't use it though, sound was delayed and not very clear.
Cheers
Nasdaq
Glad you find it of use.
The way i do it if i hard reset is after setting up the screen and the O2 stuff is about to install when you get the 3 second countdown i soft reset. This will give you a vanilla install of WM5 on your Universal and none of the Ext ROM will be installed.
This way though you do not get any of the pathces and fixes etc so i selectivly install them from the XDA Exec Ext ROM posted on the xda-dev ftp site
I then install the settings cab i made to enter my O2 Connection settings.
For the most part as described by others above you will probably be best to use corp mode for your initial setup. Then just choose pesonel when you run the CAB i made.
As far as i am aware you can still use this without a hard reset as it only installs the connections app. I have tested on mine and it was ok but would be interested if it works for others.

3G coverage is still a bit thin with O2. If you look at the icon next to your phone signal strength it should read either G or U. If it is G then you are on their NON 3G network, if it displays U then you are on thei 3G network.
I am in a week 3G area at home and mine swaps between the 2 every few minutes.
Ahhhhh interesting...wonder why they chose 'U' for 3G..doesn't quite compute!
Looking forward to playing with 3G at some stage in the future then!

'U' stands for UTMS, which is the system that we call 3G (or 3rd Generation). The 'G' stands for GSM, which is the 2nd generation networks we've all enjoyed using for the last 15 years.

I thought it might be fun too, but the truth is that I know hardly anybody with a video phone, and considering how unreliable the 3G coverage is around where I live (Sussex) it's unlikely to be much use anyway. The whole 3G premise is based on a gimmick IMHO rather than a genuine consumer need. Sure, the data rates are faster and in time this will be a good driver for the technology, but then they charge us a fcuking fortune to use it, so only a handful of people bother. Madness.
Video calling works across networks. I have found many of my relatives have 3 3G mobile phones and are able to receive video calls from me (as on Vodafone video calls are free for a short period and on O2 the rate is the same as voice calls). O2 and Vodafone UMTS download speeds are good (coverage in London is resonable and in Berkshire).
not working
have tried this - I cant connect at all - after hard reseting in corporate then running this cab and setting to personal - it tries to dial mobile web but says it cant connect for an unknown reason - any ideas
Vanilla
works ok on vanilla install - it seems since this thread was started ON hav changed some thing but this cab has no problems after vanilla installl only after corporate - I am gonna run the bug fixing cabs etc in the ext rom manually !!!
My GPRS still aint configured correctly - it connects fine but I get no internet access, its as if the proxy is configured wrong?
Is there a cab that puts the correct 3G and GPRS settings onto my phone without any user configuration required? (and without mucking up my system).
So, I've got settings from all over the world-wide interbutt, posted in this forum, and direct from a .cab file, all of them are the same, and do not work.
Whenever I attempt to connect to the orangeinternet access point it chunters along for a little while, then I get a little "cannot connect" notification box telling me "the answering modem has disconnected. To check your..... etc".
The MMS settings work fine, so it's probably not a wider issue with GPRS and my device. I have not tried the WAP settings, mostly because I have no interest in plain WAP-access. Even if it works, it is of no use, you know?
I'm on Orange's small business thingy (very small, there are only 4 of us on this plan), and they claim that GPRS is indeed enabled and it should just work. Of course, they also claimed they'd send settings to my phone over-the-air, but none have arrived in the 48 hours since I called. Can you even do that for Windows Mobile devices?
I'm using Orange's very own ROM 1.12.00 WWE with radio version 1.12.00.
Any help would be much appreciated. I just want to use IRC on the go! Actually, while we're on this, any good free IRC clients for windows mobile? I found a couple, but they want me to pay? For IRC? Madness! Or a good jabber-based IM client? I needs me some Googletalk lovin'.
I have a similar issue. I find that going into, then out of, flight mode fixes it.
Yes.
Seems the problem is two-fold, or it was. I spoke to Orange today, and not only did they give me a totally different set of GPRS settings, but also it seems I was in need of a couple of those over-the-air SIM updates.
Things work now, though if the connection is interrupted I do indeed need to toggle flight mode before it will reconnect, which is kind of a pain.
To get rid of the connection refused problem after diconnection you should downgrade IA_CallerID to IA_CallerID_1.20_WWE.
Do a search on the forum to get detailed instructions
It would be good to put bugs and fixes to problems found on latest official 8525 ROM.
1.-The side dial problem could be a starter.
2.-No streaming on this update
3.-After this update you won't be able to go back to 1.34
Solution for number 3: Run enterbl.exe from your device, then the RUU for official 1.34, then you'll be able to downgrade
Anybody has a solution for 1 and 2?
BR
Good Idea.
Could I suggest that as issues are resolved, either you update post #1
or maybe even the WIKI?
I hate to see things get buried in an exausting thread.
Thanks,
Berd
Sure thing Berd!

Have you checked your USP to PC settings? There is a a check box to enable Advanced Networking. Try both settings (i.e. ticked and unticked) and see what happens.
Not sure if its the update, but my device hangs every so often. probably once a day since i updated last week. but that could be anything...

not only is there no blackberry connect, but all versions I tried would not connect using the 2.15 rom. i've got to have bb email (unfortunately) so I rolled back to 1.34 official rom and 2.1.2.52 bb connect.
If anyone gets bb connect working with this new rom let me know.
fyi- I downgraded by using the sd flash card method described in the wiki.

actually.. i have found this release to be very very stable.. no freezes yet!!
can't disable startup sound
I recently upgraded my 8525 to the new rom provided by att/cingular (actually it is provided through htc's website, I found the link through cingular) I have some questions and was wondering if anyone can help.
The rom update doesn't give you wm6, it is still 5. It does enable the push to talk feature, and rebrands the phone as att instead of cingular. It also enables "cingular video," which is a streaming video service through att/cingular.
Now with the newer rom there is a horribly loud start up sound. It sounds like an airplane is taking off. Every time I soft reset the phone it plays this loud sound, even if my phone is on silent or on flight mode. This sound was not there before I upgraded the rom. I went into the folder where the sound is stored and tried to delete it, it will not let me. When I right click on it, the delete option is grayed out! The file is just a windows media sound, it is stored under the windows folder, and is named "3G_Up." I even tried to do it through the phone explorer on active sync, still won't let me delete it.
I am wondering if anyone knows a way to delete the file or somehow disable the start up sound. I have looked at all settings and don’t see any for start up sound.
I am also wondering this: I assume flashing a cooked rom will eliminate the cingular startup sound. If I flash a cooked rom onto my phone, will I be able to use the “push to talk” and the “cingular video?” Neither of these worked with the original rom. The “cingular video” is just a bookmark, and I tried sending a link from my phone with newer rom to an 8525 with the older rom, and it would not load. On 8525's with older roms when you push the push to talk button, it says "the ptt service is not yet available on your device."
I am assuming I have to choose between a cooked rom with no cingular video and ptt, or just live with the start up sound. If anyone knows any other way, I would just be thrilled
Thanks,
Jon

I have found the way that you tether is different than the older rom. I disabled USB connection through active sync, and connected USB cable. Then run program "internet sharing" on 8525. Then open internet explorer on pc, and begin using internet on computer. That is all I have to do to get online.
I'm not running this ROM anymore, but the solution to #2 should be to disable the IE proxy. This is in the Wiki.
The Wiki is your friend.

Do a registry search for animation. You'll find a startup wav file setting. Delete it and the startup sound is gone.
You know, I just can't understand why people would still run the completely useless Cingular/AT&T ROM build. My rom *never* crashes, never locks up, I have tons more ROM memory and I don't have all those stupid "hey, this is a cool program that you COULD use for only $9.95 a month" programs they foist into the rom...
But, I guess if you'd rather have trained monkeys at Cingular giving you "support" instead of the people here, many of whom are engineers of some variety, and know the rom's and phones inside and out, who can argue with that....
One confused Elf.

I can think of several reasons... some people dont want to flash a cooked rom.. some people want the PTT feature which does not exist on a wm6 rom yet (this alone makes this rom NOT completely useless, but would make yours useless for some people).. for some people this rom is very stable... i got a million more reasons..

But, I guess if you'd rather have trained monkeys at Cingular giving you "support" instead of the people here, many of whom are engineers of some variety, and know the rom's and phones inside and out, who can argue with that....
One confused Elf.

Its also a safety net for the noob such as myself for the next few weeks. Though I am a big DIY from electronics to cars.. when I get a brand new phone (as this one is to me - 8525) and I have it as a work phone.. I am going to read every thread I can until I am sure my curiosity doesn't leave me bricked because I missed a thread that says.. waitwaitwait... don't do that, do this, pfew, saved you a trip to buy yourself a new phone. So, in the meantime, I will play it safe with a supposedly official and tested ROM until I get the cohunas to dabble a little deeper. It has nothing to do with my trust in the forum.. it has to do with my abilities to read some of the semi-cryptic wording that I don't fully understand yet and applying what I can figure out step by step. I understand the concepts of a cooked ROM, just not fully any of the downsides.
So, as my previous thread stated, I ended up going with the official 'newer' ROM from HiTeCh and afterwards I couldn't connect to Medianet. So I call them, talk to support for 30 minutes and then they hand me over to HTC for an hour. After all that, I get another phone. Since I am now a 'Connections' afficianado from having everyone and brother at Cingy and HTC walk me through over and over, I decide to change my new phone which is currently on 'My ISP' and switch it over to MediaNet. This is (as far as I understand it), what the new ROM is forcing me to do anyways. So I change over, it connects to MediaNet just fine... and then I try to surf the web. SAME THING HAPPENS. So, it turns out the old phone was not the problem, it is either something wrong with Cingular or something wrong with my plan. I change it back to 'My ISP' and I am back surfing just fine.
The moral of the story, I would recommend getting the MediaNet setting/connection workng first before you upgrade the ROM. That way you know when you upgrade the ROM and it forces you to use MediaNet (the My ISP setting no longer worked for me after the ROM update), that you haven't killed your internet surfing capacity. These are just my ramblings so if anyone has any ideas/questions let me know.
If the answer for how to get passed this has been posted a million times, I haven't found it in my searching for the past 4 days since I got my phone... and thus immediately went to the new ROM when I saw it was available... so please point me in the direction... and flame on!
How to handle HTC x button
I am trying to install HTC x button v1.5 but v1.0 that comes with rom does not allow to install v1.5 properly because it is probebaly running in background. Does any one this issue? I would like to run HTC x-buton v1.5 what should I do?

I'm not running this ROM anymore, but the solution to #2 should be to disable the IE proxy. This is in the Wiki.

Thank you for your suggestion, but I tried this before with no results.
AT&T is probably doing it on purpose (no streaming) to make us use their pay access software.
Running the standard 1.66 ROM on Vodafone UK
Had the HD2 since 1st Feb, all well at the start. 2 weeks ago email stopped sending and receiving and no internet. Rang Vodafone and they said needed a new sim card. Put that in and it worked OK for a day then back to where I was. The problem seems to intermitant but mostly in the afternoons. I had GProfile installed so thought it might be that but still the same. Soft reset doesn't do anything although the phone seems to switch back on will GPRS connected (is this normal?)
To get emails I now need to go to airplane mode and enable the wifi and then I can download and surf. If I leave the data connection on and switch wifi on it doesn't find any connections. Email send and recieve gets stuck showing downloading x of y and a cuple of bars. Opera/IE just shows a blank page.
Spoke with Vodafone again and they say it's the phone, spoke to expanys and they say I need to fill out some form.
It would appear it has something to do with the GPRS
I have BsB installed but otherwise it's just the stock software.
Anyone had this or got any ideas how to fix/test???
Really don't want to go down the replacement phone route :-(
you could try a hard reset of the phone which would send it back to how it was when you first got it
Thanks for the reply
Was thinking that myself or reload 1.66 ROM but just trying to avoid it if possible
Is it the data 3G that wont connect?
Do you get the "Cannot connect for an unknown reason..." popup message? If so, I get this all the time. Had 2 devices and 3 sim cards but not data connection ever. Perhaps this is the reason for the upcoming radio update due very soon.
Unfortunately I live in the 0.5% of the UK where we don't get 3G!!! It's just GPRS. I was down the road the otherday and 3G kept giving me that but when it said H (whatever that is?!) it was fine. It would just appear to be the GPRS f*cking up at various points.
Just had an idea and put my work O2 sim in let it setup for that and then put my Vodafone sim in to refresh the settings.
So far back on the internet and email working
Maybe the Vodafone settings had just been corrupt
Will let you know how it goes
Thanks for the replies.

the H is hsdpa, the fastest speed you will get for browsing
Thanks Richy99, I can only dream of 3G let alone HSDPA!!!!
Well it worked for about a day and now I am back with no internet and emails occasionally. Looks like a new replacement handset......the joys of backing everything up!
