Oz Telstra HD - Crap on Vodafone - Touch HD General

Well, what a nightmare this phone turned into, piece of Telstra crap.
Basically couldn't get a unbranded HD in Oz, other than shipping one from overseas, so I brought one of the Telstra branded ones and put my vodafone sim in....straight away there was a problem, before with my HTC Touch (unbranded) when you add a new SIM, it configures the phone with all network settings etc......the Telstra HD doesn't so straight away you don't have the correct settings to connect to the internet.
Anyway, got Vodafone to email me the settings, (Doh, should have copied them from the old phone) so I thought that was it, but no....set up the vodafone internet settings etc for my data connection and I have managed to sync with the exchange server at work and can send and receive email from exchange, but can't browse the internet.....what's the go here??? also I can't get a POP 3 email account to connect, but still the Exchange sync and Microsoft Direct Push is working as well.
Just noticed there is no weather tab with this phone either....
Telstra have ruined this thing, to the point where I am beginning to hate it and I am thinking of taking it straight back and going back to the iPhone

I wouldn't blame Telstra for this, they've done their job in providing a phone that works on their network. I've gone ahead and flashed a generic rom which will give you the connection configurator and away you go.

I posted a thread over a week ago detailing how to fix the Opera browser problem with using the Telstra device on another network
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=476818&highlight=telstra

A bit harsh when it was purchased from Telstra under the understanding that I could use it on any network.
I am not really up on all this flashing and ROM stuff, so I think I might return the phone and write it off to a bad experience....to be honest for all the basic stuff the iPhone rocks....it was only due to the fact that we had blocked the iPhones from syncing with email at work that I thought I would give WM6 and HTC another try.
Came from the HTC Touch to the iPhone
Would love to flash the phone to the basic unbranded software, but the phone is only 4 hours old and I don't want to loose the warranty or brick the phone

i think your at a good stage since the phone is brand new, flash it and hope for the best.
If you brick, take it back to Telstra demanding that the phone just died and you want your money back.
Seriously your going to miss out on a good thing, don't let Telstra screw it for you.
Flash a new ROM and call it a good year.
iPhone is made for idiots dude, don't stoop to that level.
by the way, wasn't there something called HardSPL that prevents bricking?

iPhone is a good choice if you don't need GPS,if you're not a heavy user who must swap in spare battery during the day, and don't need to read and create/edit office documents.

G'day!
Thats the reason I never get into any sort of contracts , rather save money and buy an unlock unit. 4 yrs ago I paid off my Optus contract and since then bye bye to all the phone caps and contracts.
Wife's got a I-TOON its perfect for my 16 months old who cud take snaps of floor and carpet by just pressing the only button he can press.

HTC Wizard or Blackberry Curve?

Hey everyone
I`ve been tring without any success to use bb connect on the wizard (i was able to do it with bb 2.1.x.x but not with 4.x.x.x) because of that, i was not able to surf the web, only to sync email, and not my primary email account (hotmail) due the fact that i cant use http...
So now after i gave up, i was thinking on upgrading to the BB Curve (8300) any experience on it?
How about the interface, if friendly at all? or i will regret everytime that i put the device on my hands....
Any tips are welcome!!
thanks
This may be the wrong board for such a request... but I can tell you from personal experience that BBs are nothing but hype. I cannot stand them! Don't like the menus, the way the device works, the exposed keyboard, the fact that it isn't touch screen, expensive to unlock, they take forever to boot up, when battery is real low it kills the wireless so u can't make calls, etc etc...
that's that...
Wizard... simply wonderful.
Amen!!!! My wizard is my lizard,,,,,,
wizard all the way. there so modable (is that a word?) normaly after im 6/7months in to a 12 month contract im iching to get a new phone, but it took 2 years for me to upgrade from my xda mini (wizard on O2 in the uk) and thats was only due to the carphone warehouse. AVOID them btw!
before i purchaced my wizard i had the blackberry curve(8300), and it was great.... believe me i love my wizard, but the blackberry isn't bad. but if interested in getting a curve, buy the 8320 besause it comes with wifi and that helps alot.
my advice is to research.....research.....research

Another phone bites the dust...

Well, I've had my phone for about 8 months, and so its first major fault has developed. As of last Friday, it will no longer connect to the 3G network, and barely hold a 2G connection. Wifi/GPS radios are fine, so I'm guessing something with the internal aerial has gone screwy. Reflashed with original t-mob roms which have had no effect, back to WM5 (eugh) and still the same.
Had to laugh at T-mob though, they wanted me to hunt out another 3g t-mob subscriber to try their sim, and try my sim in their phone. Either that, or visit a T-Mob store. Grrr.. Managed to loan a Tytn off the boss for a couple of days, my sim goes straight to HSDPA so deffo the ameo. So T-Mob are having it back for a few days to try and resuccitate it back to life, fingers x'd its back to a state where it looks like its not been furkled with too much.
I could have taken it to a t-mob shop for them to send off, and helpfully they would have sent me a txt when it was ready for collection - as I then pointed out to the nice lady on the phone, how would I receive said message when my phone is AT YOUR FRIGGING SERVICE DEPARTMENT. Poor show from T-Mob, but what was expected. Still, at least I'm not completly off the grid at the mo.
Oh, and I had Radio 1.5 and WM 6.1 image on the phone at the time, and it was during a voice call the phone rebooted and then wouldn't work, so i'm guessing somethings maybe overheated and gone pop...

Let's hope they give you a new replacement since it is still under warranty. Who knows, may be even a 7510?

I had the same problem. It turns out that t-mobile's signal strength is not up to much in many areas. I was about to return my ameo for the third time (they insisted that it was the ameo at fault) but when I learned that it was t-mobiles' rubbish comms, I held on to it for a few weeks. Yesterday, I tried to make it sim-free and bricked it. Makes a lovely paperweight until someone can come to the rescue!!
Hi I have a x7501 so how do you get 3g to work and what plan from t-mo do you need?...Thanks...TJ

If you're talking about 3g for T-mo in America and not Europe, I don't think they have 3G as yet but they do have EDGE which is 19,99 unlimited. And now they carry a 99.99 unlimeted voice, text and sms, plan. Hope this information helps. Oh and you posted the question in the wrong thread.
Well, it would appear that the mobo or a radio chip has been replaced on it. Its due back tomorrow I think, but the repair companies website indicates what whilst the serial number is the same, the IMEI is different.
@ Bishee, I was pretty certain it wasn't the network at fault, as it was the same wherever I used it, and at home and work, I get a good HSDPA signal (sometimes dropping back to 3G when the networks congested). And it didn't change for the 3 or 4 days before it got sent back to t-mob.
@ Trekkerjim - If your not in the US (although given the model number you quote, seems to indicate this) it should work with 3G from the off, however you must have a 3g capable sim card (I've seen this a few times) and you must make sure the radio is set to the correct frequency (or auto). For people in the UK on t-mob that don't have the settings, I posted up a cab somewhere on the ftp xda site which configures the settings correctly.
Anyway, fingers x'd its all sorted now, so I'll let you know how it looks once I've gone through the fix process (olipro unlocker, WM 6.1 e.t.c. )
I got my 7501 up and running on Rogers 3G with the help
of one of their techie sales type,it's working fine with a
pay-as-you-go simcard.
Phone's back, and I'm not sure if its a replace or refurb - the job notes say a mobo swap and also unit swap. I can confirm that the case is all new and shiny and the screen printing on the case is all back to 'new' condition.
Came back with Radio 1.50.00.00
O/S Build: 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2).
ROM 2.35.110.4
If anyone wants this version (UK T-Mob), send me the distructions on how to extract the rom from the phone and I'll sort it out - you have until PK4 arrives

HD2 O2 "branding"

Hi, my son has an O2 contract about to expire and ready for upgrade. He has quite a good phone, so, does not need a new one. I want to use this upgrade to give myself an HD2 to use on my own contract.
O2 have said they will unlock the phone for me to do this.
However, are there any other things I should look out for? I am told that O2 overlay the firmware and remove certain functions that would still be there in the normal HTC build, like, router facilty etc?
I could cut an internet deal with somebody like Carphone Warehouse etc as I am told they send out a complete untouched HTC build?
This is my first post, so, soon to be an HD2 owner, just want to ensure I get it right!!
Thanks in advance,
Dave

I have an o2 phone, and to be honest I wouldn't worry about their customisations. The only thing missing is the wifi access point (even though they advertise it on their website). I moved quickly to cooked roms that have it in anyway, so no problem, or you could go for HSPL then a wwe official rom, which restores the wifi access point but keeps you on supposedly more stable (hmmm) roms.
The main downside to it is that you have to wait for o2 specific rom updates if you dn't want to use HSPL, (as with most providers), but to be honest if you are getting the phone for free, its a small price to pay.
O2 unlocking can take up to 28 days, AND you might have to call them again and they will say 'oh sorry, we'll do the unlock form again, it'l be another 28 days' (bastids) so don't expect to be able to use it on a different network straight away.
You can get it from O2, the phone would be SIM locked to O2 (which you can unlock) and likely to be vendor locked HTCs end as well. You can bypass this using HSPL to install any ROM you want but if you can get it from CPW as a completely unlocked phone I would do so as you can then do what you want with it
customisation is fine its basically a wallpaper which you can change.

I got my HD2 from O2 which is now unlocked via O2 and running a custom rom which has all the features that O2 removed and more.
I find custom roms give me better useability and most are better than stock for features so wasn't too concerned about branded or not, Just what price I could get the deal at.
The only problem I find is not being able to download updates from HTC on my serial# but as above I usually use custom anyway so don't bother me really.
THANKFULLY the HD2 from O2 is nothing like the Diamond from O2 which had an awful blue theme! The HD2 looks how a HD2 shoudld look, as mentioned all they change is the home screen wallpaper.
Thanks for the prompt replies, much appreciated.
The fact that O2 take 28 days to unlock, together with the "normal" ROM upgrade probs, that has convinced me to go the CPW route I think. There are better options price wise on the net, but with the CPW, I can collect on the upgrade date, retain the number, job done. I dont intend to make massive use of the router facility, just small time use in case i need to use my laptop where there is no normal connectivity, very light use and better than signing up for a monthly mobile broadband contract, or minimum monthly top ups on pay as you go (most of them are not actually PAYG due to this!!!)
Thanks, Dave
Just received my HD2 from o2.
It has 1.48 ROM. No O2 customisations whatsoever. I cannot see any O2 insignia. just an O2 app to send me the net/mms/sms settings.

that is actually part of your sim card, not form o2. if you put a vodafone sim in you get a vodafone settings app there instead.(well except its locked, of course, hehe)
If an unlocked phone is important to you (it was to me) then CPW is the only way to go. All their phones come unlocked as standard.
Have you started reading up on here yet on all the tweaks and changes you can undertake? Don't want to burst your bubble but think carefully; if you are happy with spending time hunting out tweaks and tweaking the phone to the way you want it then the HD2 will satisfy all your desires in this direction.
If however you don't fancy doing that and just want a high end working phone then do consider whether the HD2 is really for you.
Good luck; hope it all works out.

p.s. my o2 handset is sim unlocked. currently using it with my T-mobile PAYG sim until number transfers.
it also has everything enabled - even wifi router. 1.48 loaded. works well.

NOOB - T-Mobile UK HD2 unlocked - no O2 connection..

Hi guys.
Really sorry about this but I am at the end of my tether with this!
I run my own IT support company and one of the things I do most is Blackberry and iPhone Exchange email syncing. While both of those work brilliantly, I have had users having loads of issues getting their Windows Mobile devices working easily. Luckliy only one or 2 have these devices but more are asking....
I resorted to retiring my Bold 9000 and got a brand new sealed HD2 on the UK T-Mobile network today. First thing I did was get a sim unlock code and that went through first time (using my working o2 SIM from my BB). However, I couldn't make calls so after I spoke to o2 I got in to the Phone, Network settings and with the Network selection on auto, the preferred networks list was blank. Clicking the preferred networks button brings up the list of preferred networks, ticked o2 - UK and ok'd it. Goes back to main network screen and still blank. Clicking Find Network then brings up cannot register on selected network.
Changing automatic network selection to manual, selecting )2 - UK and ok'ing that brings up the same 'cannot register on selected network error. So, after coming here, I stuck on the HSPL 1.42, then upgraded to RUU_Leo_HTC_WWE_1.48.405.2_Radio_Signed_15.28.50.07U_2.05.51.05_2_Ship
That went on fine and after wiping to factory to make sure I sent through the set up. Same errors and still can't make receive calls.
Stuck on the 2.08 hspl for the hell of it then upgraded to RUU_Leo_HTC_WWE_1.66.405.2_Radio_Signed_15.30.50.07U_2.06.51.07_Ship
Guess what? Exact same problems! I spoke to o2 support and they were pretty useless. Explained that it was sim unlocked and on a generic firmware. They said that T-Mobile do something weird with the HTC and I should try calling HTC tech support, who are now closed...... I am not sure HTC will be of any help anyway as I can't exactly go telling them I have stuck on the HSPL and a non-approved firmware for what was the originall carrier!
Help please anybody?? I have googled and googled but haven't found anyone with the same problem, I might be being blind. BTW, what I guess is the antenna icon has an exclamation next to it
Thanks,
Nick
Quick update. Housemate got back so I nicked the Vodafone UK sim from his iPhone and stuck that in the HD2. Same problem, won't register on Vodafone either. Anyone?
Got annoyed. changed the SPL back to the standard 1.42. Installed the latest T-Mobile official firmware. Same problems. Do I have the only HD2 ever to be doing this? . I don't have a T-Mobile sim to hand and the nearest store is miles away sadly.
Does your phone app not work at all ?
How do you know unlock code worked ? so far every sim you tried has failed.
Where did you get the unlocking code from ?
How did you use it ? meaning how did you input it ?
Verdict so far, if a t-mobile sim card works then unlock was a fail !
Ok referring to your network selection, for the UK, you should have it set to Automatic, it will then use the network associated with your sim.
referring to your call problem, does the phone still work with the original t-mobile sim?
if so it sounds like your unlock code didnt work.
if your phone no longer works with the original t-mobile, I should think something has gone wrong with the radio software you have installed on the phone. Try going back to the stock htc/radio rom. If that doesnt work then the phone probably needs to go back to t-mobile for repair, at this point you tell them "it just stopped working"
have you tried to run the connection setup wizard?
settings - menu - all settings - connections - connection setup
if there isn't one, connectionsetup is available as a cab.
Hi guys. It was a brand neww, sealed box HD2, but from T-Mobile. No SIM with it at all or I would have been trying that too of course .
Regarding how I unlocked it. I paid an ebay seller to give me an unlock code. When I fist put on 02 SIM in the phone it wafffled on about being network locked basically and had a field to enter the unlock code. Entered the code given to me via the Ebay unlocker and never got that message again on the screen. Is that wrong somehow?
Manual network, auto network, selecting carrier etc all of them make no difference. I am off out now but have found a local store with PAYG T-Mobile sims in stock so will grab 1 later today and see what happens then.
Will update/bore you all later!
Cheers,
Nick
Right, case closed. I got the T-Mobile sim and stuck it in. Showed up with T-Mobile on the scren and a good strength signal. Tried to make a call, dropped back to the home screen almost straight away. I had full data access though. Spoke to T-Mobile who informed me that my brand new, sealed box HD2 was blacklisted and I could do nothing with it!
Vodafone and O2 just flat out don't let you register the handset on their network if is it blacklisted it would seem.
Contacted the seller and he has arranged a refund, but the refund is showing as 'pending' so I am not going to return the phone until I see it physically in my account.
I have to be honest and say that this is actually a good thing as despite HTC doing all they can to make the Win 6.5 on there look less dog-like, the overall UI is still pretty awful. Now,this phone with Android 2.1 on it might be a dfferent matter! Back on my Bold 9000 for now......
Cheers,
Nick.
I am sorry to hear about that, looks like to you got hit by some sort of scam, probably resealed a second hand or refurbished unit into an original box and sold it as new.
regarding the UI of the htc devices, I am not really sure why you think this, htc hd2 uses htc sense which is the same ui as on the android htc phones. The only windows mobile thing you should really see is the start menu which has been praised as being a very good replacement for the old start menu. even all the settings windows are run through the htc sense ui so i am really not sure what you are complaining about :S
If you dislike the top bar/bottom soft buttons, there have been a lot of modifications to these in more recent hd2 roms, maybe you should to take a look at the roms section to see some pics.

Can an nbranded HD2 be made into a Vodafone branded HD2?

Had my phone only a few hours and there's no sound coming from the speakers. Both HTC and I reckon it's hardware, but I'm happy to see if a ROM update will do the trick. Phone shipped by my insurers as unbranded, hence the ROM is currently 1.66 - HTC recommend calling Vodafone to get it branded as one of their's because my serial number is incompatible with Vodafone updates on the HTC support site.
Haven't yet phoned Vodafone because I'm fed up calling Vodafone/HTC/Lloyds insurers already. Hence my question to you experts: is it feasible for the rebranding to be done (over the phone)? Apparently Vodafone have to comply because I pay them my bills.
Any advice appreciated - thanks.
SC
PS I doubt this'll fix it anyway, which means sending it back to Lloyds so they can send me another one
the 1.72 roms (the branded ones) are identical to the unbranded 1.66 roms except for... well.... the branding and i believe they are also operator locked which is nothig but a hinderence.
I'm sorry to hear you got a dud and i would just save the time and send it back to lloyds and have them send you a new one.
After another morning of struggling with this phone I'm beginning to think this is the worst phone I've ever owned.
- Sense failed to launch and had to do a factory reset - phone is even worse than yesterday now
- Wireless drops every 1-5 minutes (wireless laptop/mbp works fine though)
- Normal data connection drops when download apps
- Won't connect to Windows Live ID at all
- Default Facebook app won't connect at all
- Numerous browser crashes
- Browser now loads pages in pretty much text only mode regardless of settings - images aren't displaying - won't load pages where I want to download CAB files, e.g. .NET for Cookies Home Tab
This is just a rant for now and I'm sure people will say stuff like "Send it back and get a different phone" - but having done so much research into the HD2 and really wanting to like it, I still want to believe it'll change. But for now, I'm really p155ed off.
EDIT: When typing, text sometimes no longer appears in the window, instead it appears in the green "dictionary" box and only appears in the sentence when I press space, etc - WTF is that all about?
