HD2 O2 "branding" - HD2 General

Hi, my son has an O2 contract about to expire and ready for upgrade. He has quite a good phone, so, does not need a new one. I want to use this upgrade to give myself an HD2 to use on my own contract.
O2 have said they will unlock the phone for me to do this.
However, are there any other things I should look out for? I am told that O2 overlay the firmware and remove certain functions that would still be there in the normal HTC build, like, router facilty etc?
I could cut an internet deal with somebody like Carphone Warehouse etc as I am told they send out a complete untouched HTC build?
This is my first post, so, soon to be an HD2 owner, just want to ensure I get it right!!
Thanks in advance,
Dave

I have an o2 phone, and to be honest I wouldn't worry about their customisations. The only thing missing is the wifi access point (even though they advertise it on their website). I moved quickly to cooked roms that have it in anyway, so no problem, or you could go for HSPL then a wwe official rom, which restores the wifi access point but keeps you on supposedly more stable (hmmm) roms.
The main downside to it is that you have to wait for o2 specific rom updates if you dn't want to use HSPL, (as with most providers), but to be honest if you are getting the phone for free, its a small price to pay.
O2 unlocking can take up to 28 days, AND you might have to call them again and they will say 'oh sorry, we'll do the unlock form again, it'l be another 28 days' (bastids) so don't expect to be able to use it on a different network straight away.

You can get it from O2, the phone would be SIM locked to O2 (which you can unlock) and likely to be vendor locked HTCs end as well. You can bypass this using HSPL to install any ROM you want but if you can get it from CPW as a completely unlocked phone I would do so as you can then do what you want with it

customisation is fine its basically a wallpaper which you can change.

I got my HD2 from O2 which is now unlocked via O2 and running a custom rom which has all the features that O2 removed and more.
I find custom roms give me better useability and most are better than stock for features so wasn't too concerned about branded or not, Just what price I could get the deal at.
The only problem I find is not being able to download updates from HTC on my serial# but as above I usually use custom anyway so don't bother me really.

THANKFULLY the HD2 from O2 is nothing like the Diamond from O2 which had an awful blue theme! The HD2 looks how a HD2 shoudld look, as mentioned all they change is the home screen wallpaper.

Thanks for the prompt replies, much appreciated.
The fact that O2 take 28 days to unlock, together with the "normal" ROM upgrade probs, that has convinced me to go the CPW route I think. There are better options price wise on the net, but with the CPW, I can collect on the upgrade date, retain the number, job done. I dont intend to make massive use of the router facility, just small time use in case i need to use my laptop where there is no normal connectivity, very light use and better than signing up for a monthly mobile broadband contract, or minimum monthly top ups on pay as you go (most of them are not actually PAYG due to this!!!)
Thanks, Dave

Just received my HD2 from o2.
It has 1.48 ROM. No O2 customisations whatsoever. I cannot see any O2 insignia. just an O2 app to send me the net/mms/sms settings.

that is actually part of your sim card, not form o2. if you put a vodafone sim in you get a vodafone settings app there instead.(well except its locked, of course, hehe)

If an unlocked phone is important to you (it was to me) then CPW is the only way to go. All their phones come unlocked as standard.
Have you started reading up on here yet on all the tweaks and changes you can undertake? Don't want to burst your bubble but think carefully; if you are happy with spending time hunting out tweaks and tweaking the phone to the way you want it then the HD2 will satisfy all your desires in this direction.
If however you don't fancy doing that and just want a high end working phone then do consider whether the HD2 is really for you.
Good luck; hope it all works out.

p.s. my o2 handset is sim unlocked. currently using it with my T-mobile PAYG sim until number transfers.
it also has everything enabled - even wifi router. 1.48 loaded. works well.

new o2 update look

anybody been o2 site, new look and I think new updates. But I cannot download them???
hmm dun think its an update. i just went to the site and didnt see any new new ROMs.
On the applications page it makes a direct reference to push emails... This is only in the latest rom's so they must be planning a release soon surely? Otherwise why mention it?
http://xda.o2.co.uk/xdaExecApps.aspx
The very last phrase say:
The upgraded software for Microsoft Windows Mobile® allowing push email is coming soon.
(complitly scroll down, you'll see it)
;-)
what the heck is push e-mail anyway?
What other updates do you recon we can expect from O2?

push email makes pocket outlook work in a similar manner to blackberry devices, where email is "delivered" to your pda.
Aside from that we'll probably get nothing more than is already available in the latest rom's from other suppliers, though we can always hope for stereo bluetooth
i was hoping for the Wifi being fixed so its not like a 56k modem.
Oh well.....

web page lovely. still no ******g Rom update. o2 are slack.
Customer service is crap.
IT people at o2 know nothing.
No a2dp in next rom.
10 times more expensive on unlimted data than Tmobile. 75quid vs 7.50. no wonder they can afford such a swanky new web site.
o2 are ***k. I'm off to tmobile in 34 days and counting.
34 day and counting
Good luck CRJL, still got 15 months left on mine contract. sign up to 02 and flipping T-mobile came out with web and walk. oh well i just keep paying.
Unlucky, I've not had many problems that cant be fixed by browsing on here, but i'm not using the mobile-internet stuff at all and are getting it on o2 employee cash cause of my girlfriend, but they do hold back on Rom and Radio updates to the general public and the product itself still feels like its beta hardware with so many of them failing, thought I was due a 3rd one there for a bit but the bug went away.

Guys, just to let you know (unless you've figured this out/posted it above and I did not spot it):
Go to the Software upgrade page of any device:
e.g http://xda.o2.co.uk/xdaExecSoftware.aspx
And then add 'download' to access the Updates:
i.e http://xda.o2.co.uk/xdaExecSoftwareDownload.aspx
Such a sly... no IMEI needed
Hope that helps
Cya
Looks like they have spotted this one.... it doesn't work any more, or maybe the pages are offline right now.
They seem to be doing a lot of work on the web site just recently ... I wonder why :?:
so has anyone managed to download then? and can you post them here?
Looks like they've put a check on the download page to see if you've actually done the IMEI check.
I've just gone through the check myself, and there's no check (as of yet) on the actual download link
http://xda.o2.co.uk/downloads/Xda_Exec_Upgrade_v113188.exe
(edit add - it's still an ancent ROM mind you)
Now the index page for the site is showing a 403: You are not authorized to view this page message. Hmmmmm.... *strokes* beard.
Just what is wrong with providing your IMEI? AFAIK it's just to make sure you're not trying to get the Exec ROM for the wrong device. O2 already know you've got an Exec - it says so on your account - and they know your device's IMEI.
As for ROM upgrades - use the latest QTek or IMate ROM. The QTek works well for me.
It's a PITA (albeit a minor one) to go through settings, open up the info screen, and type it in.
It's also a phone number check, so if you've got an Exec on a different network you can't get the updated rom. Or if you've got an MDA Pro etc then you can't get it as well.
Only 3 people on this entire thread are not on O2.
And you've wasted more time moaning about the O2 website than it would take to find your IMEI. Which is literally 5 taps of your stylus.
Besides which, the O2 ROM is crap, and the next O2 ROM will probably be just as crap, so there's probably not a great deal of point waiting for the next O2 ROM anyway, or using an O2 ROM on a device that isn't connected to O2. Unless you actually use O2 Active in which case you're doomed to use the current O2 ROM until O2 finally get an AKU2 ROM out. Which could be months away. FWIW you could probably copy the O2 customization crap out of the original ExtROM and install it over the top of a QTek/IMate ROM which would give you what you want from your device without having to wait for O2 or go through the hideously complex process of tapping your screen in 5 places and reading a number.
Like with any modern day phone you can just dial *#06# to find out your imei
Yeah but then you have to press 8 buttons: Phone, Fn, *, #, 0, 6, Fn, #
(or 1 button & 5 screen taps - technically the System Info is still the more 'efficient')

Can Vodaphone v1640 be upgraded to roms with other brand?

Dear elite members of XDA-Developers.com:
I am new to Pocket PC Phone and New to HTC Universal, but cerntainly not new for hot gadgets, have owned various Palm and PPC unite. I've been reading there forums and couldn't come up with an confirmed answer.
My question is, can my Vodaphone be able to flash to ROMs like the Asian Dopod, O2 XDA Exec or I-Mate Jasar? If that's out of the question, am I be able to atleast flash the radio from my current 1.04.10 to the newest? I am also without the exe file to flash the radio file. Can someone kindly provide his compatible version to me here? My main concern is can I still flash the whole rom?
I find it is very trouble to unclock any kind of HTC universal currently, I am asking my UK friends to help me find a local service to see if they can unlock my phone, if that attempt failed, I am gonna give a go to www.imei-check.co.uk, just got their comfirm that they can unlock my phone but for a charge of 50GBP plus 16GBP to mail the unit back to me. Which gonna be quite a bit of money even before adding my cost of shipment to send the unit to them.
Finally, please answer my questions, I did the search but couldn't come up with a confirm answer, thank you very much.
Alex
I'll write some more info later but just so you know flashing all Universal devices from one operator rom to another is not a problem.
We have several V1640's running custom brewed ROMs or the AKU2 iMate ROMs without any issues. You will need to use the "No country ID" upgrade exe and you really would need to check the bootloader (read other threads) as bootloaders pre 1.00 can be a bit funny and most of our V1640's where running really old bootloaders and ROMs.

There is no linkage between the SP lock and the ROM image. Even if you upgrade you will not see any difference in this respect.
Thank you for clearing my irresolute mind. I am feel much safer to flash my rom to a much newer version. Any recommandation? Good news is, I do have a bootloader v1.0, this support by what I saw from the bootloader screen, it has v1.0 at the bottom.
Thank you jbn for the the reminder. I've been educated through out these useful forums that there is no charmer to unlock the phone via flashing rom files. Good point yo've brought up that there is no linkage between the SP lock and ROM image. Maybe that's why when I asked www.imei-check.co.uk a question that is sort of vice versa, I asked them after unlocking, can I still flash the phone to a newer software without affecting the unlocked status of the phone, that answer was a firmly 'NO'.
Thank you guys for the answer. By reading the forums, I've got a impression that the only way to unlock this phone without sending the phone out is to contact the provider, which in this case is Vodafone UK. I've called them and they said they need a phone number that come with this phone when it was purchased. I've been trying to work with the eBay guys who sold me this phone to get a phone number. But he seems unwilling to cooperate with me by agreeing to look for on-line unlocking service for me. Which I've already looked.
I am planning to call Vodaphone again see if I can get a unlock code from them without the phone number for a charge. Before I do that, is any of you guys have experience that this will work? Or is there any possibility that you can legally own a vodaphone without owning a phone number (signing contract). Because the guy did mention that he bought the phone without phone numbers, and he's selling whole bunch of them.
Thank you again
Alex

Vodafone Branded X1 disadvantages?

I am in US and I just bought a Vodafone branded X1 from Ebay. The description read that the phone is unlocked so I did not really care that it was supplied by Vodafone. I realize now that I may have rushed into buying it since it may be crippled by Vodafone. Should I worry about it? I did some searching on the forums and found out that it does not let some ppl browse the internet in full view w/IE or Opera and some can't stream radio stations from 3G and others can't update email from WiFi while some can. I am not sure how much of it is fact or fiction. Can anyone definitively say which features are disabled or crippled because of the Vodafone brand?
Thanks.

Just a few words.
SPL
Flash original ROM
done....
I got mine T-Mobile unlocked. With crap T-Mobile software on it.
Flashed SPL on it and than the original ROM.
And now I have a de-branded Xperia X1i.
I know it is possible to flash it, but I would prefer not to do it, since I know it will take a lot of my time plus I understand that I will loose the radio panel in the process? as well as warranty and may even get a brick...

Who told you that?
You could flash the original rom (It has the radio panel)
And than put the original spl back.
I did that with the KAiser.
They accepted it cause the original spl was on it.
I have a Vodafone-branded one myself. It wasn't locked thankfully but the Voda altered bits are enough to make me try de-branding it at the weekend.
With the Voda bits on there one thing you'll really need to do is edit the registry keys to give you access to the 'My ISP' settings, rather than delete them if you edit and put in your own network's details then the Live/Messenger stuff should still work (it did for me). Apart from that I haven't had any particular issues using my O2 SIM in it.
Hi
I had a voda branded X1 for a week. everything worked, nothing was blocked, but this was in the UK. The voda actually had some advantages - it never did the X1's pregnant pause trick and optical js scrolling in opera worked correctly. i sent it back due to network issues and then bought the phone outright.
Nigel
to the original poster, you brought a vodafone branded one from ebay and are worried about the warranty?
I doubt VF will want anything to do with you unfortunately if you bought it from a third party.

I can't find the post with the details in at the mo, I'll have another look tomorrow!
You don't actually need to edit the registery, just create a new group and set it to default in the Connections app.
I did that but I found that Windows Live wouldn't work because it seems to be hard-coded to use the My ISP settings.
Agreed. You can unlock the Vodafone connections in HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Destinations\<Account> and then modify the ReadOnly key to 0.
I did that, and I could then edit and modify the Vodafone connections, but I still can't connect to Live (and my IMAP email seems to have trouble connecting as well, it doesn't even try). I've removed all entries and started from scratch, but that didn't help.
So if anyone can come up with what exactly to do AFTER you have unlocked the connection entries, I'd appreciate you posting it here.

IMAP works fine with me, but LIVE isn't likely to I don't think. From what I understand you can't access LIVE services from a 6.1 phone, this is the excuse VF were giving for only selling the touchpro through business channels.
Okay, so we're in agreement that the ONLY real limitation is lack of Live support? If so, I need to turn my eyes towards my mail configuration again. Trouble is, as long as it's branded and something goes wrong with the connectivity, I'll always think "Hm, maybe it's Vodafone again"....
After I unlocked the settings I edited the existing connection details for the Contract connection and I deleted the settings for PAYT.
This took a few hard resets to get working and I found that if you delete My ISP the Live stuff will never work.
Roll on the weekend when I can debrand!
Could you give me a few hints as to what you deleted in the end, and what you kept? And maybe also how I go about debranding (link to a topic, I keep getting lost in all the different ones on the subject) - I keep thinking I have a problem because of Vodafone, and that's annoying - even though it might be unrelated or just require correct configuration.
Like I said I deleted the PAYT details and edited the Contract WAP ones.
As for debranding I'm not the one to ask about that because it's new to me too!
also make sue that any internal connections options in the programs are set to use "the internet" rather than my isp or whatever.
"the internet" chooses the best connection available, so wifi if it's on, otherwise will try and connect through cellular.

T-mobile HD2, unlocked and won't connect to O2

I purchased an HD2 from eBay, it was locked to T-mobile. I immediately purchased an unlock code, installing my old iPhone sim (making O2 aware of what I was doing) and punching in the unlock code. All appeared well, however it won't connect to the telephone network. I'm getting the GSM icon and I can strangley check emails when out and about sometimes. But I can't make nor receive calls.
I've taken the T-mobile ROM off and replaced it via HSPL with ...
RUU_Le2_UK_1.43.206.4_Radio_Signed_15.26.50.07U_2.04.50.22_2_Ship
Which is the standard O2 ROM. It throws up the following error when searching for networks and trying to connect to O2.
"cannot register on selected network, choose another network".
I've tried everything and I'm just about losing it, smashing the phone passed my mind at one point.
I've tried my sim in another O2 HD2 and it worked fine, on all account. His O2 sim didn't work in my phone, which is annoying. So the issue is with the handset.
Before I go insane, I don't suppose someone knows a very easy solution to this issue?
Regards,
Sii
Info....
OS Version - 5.2.21864 (21864.5.0.81)
Manilla Version - 2.5.192.02525.0
ROM Version - 1.43.206.4 (70315) WWE
Radio Version - 2.04.50.22_2
Protocol 15.26.50.07U
It's sat next to me on the desk with an exclamation mark on the network icon but the mobile web icon is connected.
Very srtange.
automatic network selection brings back a failure to connect, however manual selection brings back all UK providers, selecting O2. I get "cannot register".
I wonder if it's something to do with O2 barring the handset? Brand new before I opened it. Also it was locked to T-mobile.
There must be a very simple explanation for this I hope.
Sounds like you may have to contact T-mobile for an unlock code.

I've paid this company ....
[unlockdata dot co dot uk for a code and have used it, however that does appear to be the issue from what I can see.
They sent me a code, when placing my O2 sim in the phone asked for it, I entered it and all appeared well. However it must not be the case deep down in the phone somewhere.....
are you sure it hasnt been blocked by t-mobile? Could well be an insurance scam: data usually works on blocked phones whereas GSM doesn't.
Well I've took my O2 sim card out and stuck my T-mobile one back in and the T-mobile one works and the O2 one doesn't, but I can't make calls.
Did some diggging that this ....
I've not been able to use the phone due to it actually being barred from service. Please use the below link ..
www . checkmend . com / uk / verify
With the certificate ID of - CM4510856-D4848
Looks like it's not stolen or lost, but just barred. I wonder why.
Is there any way I can get this removed?
Its blocked then: blocked and barred are the same thing. More than likely the seller has sold the device then immediately reported it lost/stolen to claim a new one and thus not only have a new phone buy also a nice slice of cash in their back pocket.
There is no way that the phone will be barred without having been reported as either lost or stolen and there is also no way of having it unblocked unless you are the original owner, haven't made an insurance claim, and ring T-mobile with the blocking password provided when the loss was first reported to the police.
Personally I recommend you lodge a claim with PayPal immediately as any other line of enquiry will only serve to delay the inevitable: you will not get the phone unblocked.
Best of luck sorting it out.
Complaint logged with Paypal, just have to wait and see what comes of it. Included the link to the file saying it's barred, let's see what the seller has to say about that.
c*ck omlette that he is
Thanks so much for the info and shoulder to cry on, heh heh.
All the best, Sii
Good luck with it mate, hope you get it sorted quickly.
Well I spoke to T-mobile and they said "no idea why we blocked it, it's not listed as stolen or anything, there you go, unbarred".
I can make calls on my T-mobile sim, however it still REFUSES! to connect to O2, even though I've put in the unlock code supplied by the company listed above.
Spoke to O2 customer support and T-mobile, no bars on the phone, no issues are barring by either provider. Just refuses to connect to O2.
Any ideas?
If not, anyone want to buy a £360 2 day old HD2?

I've had 3 sims from O2 already this week, they've been really cool about it.
I've also had to ROMS on, the original t-mobile one, and the latest HTC ROM too.
I can't for the life of me figure out what the problem is, it's very annoying.
I may just put it up for sale on the bay of E, it works perfectly on T-mobile.
I'll try some other flashes this evening and see if that fixes it, however I don't think it will. FUnny thing is that it won't connect to the network but the large [G] connects, which does make me believe it's something radio based.
Been told to check the following ....
Yes in the sim card options type mepd
Network active - locked
Network disabled / inactive - unlocked
ANy ideas how?
Bit of an obivous thing really, but did you have to go through connection setup when you put the O2 SIM in?

im not sure exactly which ROMS you have tried so i dont know whether they would have included a radio update... to be sure flash the radio ONLY!

Can anyone on O2 UK please list the Radio flash they're using and working with?
I did list the ROM I'm currently using in my first post.
I tried this with the originally installed T-mobile ROM (unknown details, apologies) the latest HTC ROMs (United Kingdom 1.48.405.2 and WWE:1.66.405.2) direct from their UK site and then the O2 listed in my first post.
I'll give everything another go tonight, seriously running out of steam on this topic though

Excellent, thanks so much for the information, I'll give that a stab when I get in after work. To save me hunting around, I don't suppose you'd be so awesome as to link to the ROM
Thank for everything guys, I just hope this ROM update fixes something ....

Few questions regarding changing firmware and unlocking

Hi I've just bought an omnia 7 which is uk t-mobile branded and sim locked. I would like to debrand it and unlock it so I can put my own sim in. I've done a bit of searching and found a page with all the firmwares on. Am I right in thinking that I need to install the XXJL3 uk retail rom to become unbranded? Would I then need to update to mango through zune?
Also I would like to unlock it. Is the best way through imei unlock? I've seen a few people selling this through ebay and at £8 seems a good deal
Cheers
Hi Rob77,
My Omnia is/was a T-Mobile branded phone when I got it last October.
I used these guys to get it unlocked, http://www.unlocksamsung.co.uk/
It took less than a hour.
The XXJL3 Retail ROM is also the one I used and Yes Zune will give you the rest of the updates.
Two things to bear in mind before you start.
1. If you want to (DEV) unlock your Omnia (i.e. Sideload Apps)
Then unlock it straight after you change the ROM. As there isn't a way to do it from Mango (yet )
2. You won't be able to use MMS on GiffGaff.
Theres no way to set the MMS settings on WP7 and GiffGaff have O2 Pre-Pay setting on there sims, so the phone reads and sets the wrong info.
Thanks ZaForD for the excellent advice. I don't get the phone till tomorrow but ill use that rom you mentioned and debrand it that way.
Its a bit of a shame about the mms issue with giffgaff, I wasn't aware of that. I generally send pictures through email now anyway so isn't really a deal breaker for me.
I looked on that network unlocking site you mentioned and see they charge 15 quid. But if they can do it and fast I dont mind paying the extra.
For the chevron unlock you mention does it stay unlocked with any future firmware upgrades that may come?
Thanks again
Rob
Edit to say, have you tried this solution to the mms issue:

The last poster claims to have got it working

Hi Rob77,
WP7 phones were only just released when I got mine unlocked and that was one of only three sites I found that could unlock the Omnia. It was also the cheapest, but things have clearly changed now
Each major update seems to brake the Chevron unlock.
I don't use it myself, so i'm not the best person to advise you on this.
I was just trying to save you some hassle if you wanted to go down that route.
The MMS its that big a deal for me either, but every now and then I look for a solution and have yet to find one.
That thread is for an LG phone, Samsungs don't have an MFG (manufactoring) menu. They have a Diag (diagnosis) menu.
The setting mentioned dose nothing on the Omnia
The only WP7 phones that have a fix AFAIK are the HTC's, they have a 'Network Connection' App that has the GiffGaff settings.
The 'Network Profile' App for Samsungs dosen't have any GiffGaff settings.
Samsung say GiffGaff haven't provided any, GiffGaff have yet to answer my email's/agent msg's. But its only been around 8 months, they maybe busy.
Thanks again for the great advice ZaForD
Its a bit of a shame about the giffgaff MMS issue but hopefully in the future they may finally get round to fixing it amongst themselves. I cant recall receiving an MMS in the last 6 months anyway so its no biggi really.
I probably wont Chevron unlock mine either. Is it just for installing 3rd party apps that are not available through the marketplace? I've not really needed to on my android so doubt I will on WP7
Hi ZaForD I came across this http://www.nextbestgeek.com/2010/12/12/samsung-no-mms-read-on/ and thought it might be of some interest. Apparently it works but I'm unable to test it at the moment as I still haven't received my phone (damn ebayer). When mine arrives I'm going to chevron unlock it and try it out but I'm unsure whether pay chevron labs or go with the free unlock that is on this forum.
sim lock
i dont thnk while changing rom thr s any sim lock ............to dev unlock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335452 here u can c cpmplete guide to dev unlock
Hey Rob
I had a look at the link, I don't think it'll be any help.
There doesn't appear to be anywhere to add any new settings.
Which implys the App gets the MMS settings from either:
The 'Sim Card' which in our case are O2 pre-paid settings not Giffgaff.
And which is the same as 'Resetting' the phone.
Or it pulls the info from the 'Network' which would be the same as 'txt 2020' for settings.
That also doesn't work for WP7 and from what i've read on the giffgaff forums, doesn't work for Android, Apple or Blackberry phones either.
Thats a shame. Thanks for taking a look, hopefully in the future we will get a fix
