Since it seems as though the Wi-fi periodically just shuts down for some reason and I don't notice, thus spending so much money on 3G which is so slow, how do I shut it down?
(Just wondering...what is the point of 3G and all the other HDSMA and all that stuff) Oh and are there any of the other connections that may require cash? Or are they important for some reason...like GSM.
EDIT: Wait...is 3G required for the phone to function? If so, how do I avoid wasting money on 3G for other things like surfing the internet...using the youtube panel...
No, u can disable it with a program called noData
Will the lack of 3G affect anything? Because...I spent over a whooping $100 on some Mobile Data...which basically makes up 95% of my entire phone bill.
EDIT: Wait was that "no" for whether the 3G was vital for anything? Anyway I have noData and I just disabled everything yet at the top there is still the symbol of a connection. It says:
3G M1-3GSM
ActiveSync Connected
Disabling gprs will not affect any programs on your phone, and with noData you can choose witch connections you want to block. (example: gprs internet, gprs push,..)
i disabled everything in nodata and i do not have any costs because the phone cannot establish a connection
i get the 3g symbol but i dont care about it
I deactivated everything and yet I am still able to get into the Opera browser...and wi-fi is off...

Yes, I can still get into the opening page.

I shut it down in settings --> phone --> network and selected only GSM band. This will take away the 3G connection still leaving GPRS connection available. However, this implies installing no other software AND consuming less power (am I wrong on this latter point?!)

You always get GPRS connection. As far as I know, you can not disable it on this phone without installing some software

Okay...not just the opening page. I tried going into gameFAQs and it worked.
The 3G symbol appears at the top though, meaning there is an available network but it is not connected. This disappears completely when I activate Opera...so how do I determine that 3G is really off?

Anyone know what is going on here, and if there is anything I can do about it ?

thats not the rom's problem. thats a microsoft coding problem. if you can join the beta test and complain about it. i hate that also. instead of looking for an existing connection it starts gprs. thats very annoying.

Anyone considered the fact that M$ thought of it at a different angle?
If you use Windows Live Messenger it connects via GPRS/EDGE because it tries to sustain your online status. If you connect with Wi-Fi and your attention is elsewhere (Chatting to the Sexy waitress who just brought you your coffee) and the device suspends because the suspend time on the device is set to 2min you loose your connection to Live Messenger Servers....
Where as with GPRS the connection remains on even if the device is suspended...so there is no connection lost...
Cant see the problem anyway? If you are connected via GPRS and connect to a Wi-Fi connection PIE and Opera will use the Wi-Fi connection as priority...
But Yeah, I agree that it is not the biggest thing in the world for a Software developer to add a tab in options called "Preferred Connection list"

There is another angle from the user perspective, not everyone in the world has an unlimted data plan. People like me in the states are pretty fortunate to be able to get data for $30-$40 a month nationwide unlimited. It is not like that everywhere, or for some $30-$40 a month for data might be too expensive.
Personally I would rather have it use GPRS/EDGE than WiFi becuase it conserves something more valueable to me, that is battery life. Since I pay for unlimited data I like to get the most out of it that I can, last month I pulled almost 4 gigs over EDGE.

Very True....Relative to what I earn in our currency and what my mobile operator charge.... GPRS/Edge data p/Mb is fairly priced in Namibia (They Dropped our GRPS cost by 60% last month)
However MS cannot write applications to accomedate all the specific rates of different operators accross the globe. Thus they are going the "better user experience" route rather trying to save the end-user money...
But as stated in my previous post... how difficult can it be to change the code to accomedate preferred connections?
Hi,
I have searched high and low and probably not well enough, but I couldn't take it anymore. I'm having trouble getting connected when I'm on 3G. It won't let me go online. As soon as I move and I get a GPRS connection, it's all good. But the moment it shows me the 3G sign in the notification bar, internet stops working.
It used to work fine and I even managed to get it to work once for a couple of minutes orso. But it keeps happening. Even after hard reset, I can't get past google signup when it's showing 3G. But when it's showing GPRS, it does work.
Just did it again > If I "use 2G networks only", wait and disable it again. My connection goes dead for a second, but then pops up and everthing works fine untill the screen goes off. It seems it doesn't always work when I do this.
I'm on JF1.31 rc30 and dutch T-mobile with WnW 384 / 64 Kb/s unlimited data.
By "hard reset" did you remove the battery? That worked for me.

If you're across the pond, don't you need RC8? That may be the problem there... Also, I can't say from personal experience, but from what I understand about the difference of 3G there from 3G here is that we use 1700mhz down/2100mhz up while you use 2100mhz for both down and up. I've seen posts where people have said they've had 3G over there but I can't say for sure. I believe it can though, it might be the apn differences between RC8 and RC30.
Also, look in the thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466174 for the latest JesusFreke RC8 if you do need it.

Turn of 3G connections to force it to GPRS so you'll at least be able to sign in.

I have no idea how or when, but on my 20th or so try to log in, it did. I think it was on GPRS, but I'm not sure. But after that it went all the way. 3G was working again. All of that on the RC8 version. Maybe google had problems or smt?
So I guess thnx ipaqkiller

Does anyone know the point of the clock numbers next to the network label? Is it some kind of monitor to see how long someone is active with their network or does it start from 00:00:00 when the phone is switched on?
See on this thread called How to disable HTC notifications screen at the screenshot cgcmd posted (I'm sorry, the forum won't let me link at the mo as I'm too new)... Next to where it says 3G, mine used to say that or HSDPA (I think) but now it says T-Mobile Internet and it has a clock counting up. Is that bad?
I'm currently connected to my home wi-fi if that makes any difference.
Having said all that, I think I'd be more worried if it was counting down...

This means you have an active data connection (with T-Mobile)... If this is a good or a bad thing depends on the fact if you have or haven't got a data plan.
Grtz,
Degake
I'd just like to add to the above answer that most data plans are on volume not time (certainly in the uk) so an active data connection (which it is) doesn't mean you are necessarily being charged.

Oh, that's good because I've disabled things that need a continuous internet connection like the weather for instance and update it when I really want to know.
I also check my online account and it's recording my non-wi-fi data usage at £0.00 charge, so that's reassuring.
So I am using a Unlocked Rogers Samsung Focus on Fido. The data only works when the 3G+ symbol is displayed and not 3G. However, when browsing the web it contantly changes from 3G+ back to 3G and the internet no longer works. Is there a way to stop it from disconnecting from 3G+, or a way to set it so it is always on 3G+? Anyone else have this issue?
I'm kinda noticing this too, who's your provider?

I have a similar problem with AT&T unlocked. Everything works on 3G except downloading from Marketplace. Mail, browsing works. I can browse, see info, ratings etc on Marketplace but I can't download, I get the "Attention required". When I switch 3G off (goes to HSPDA) I can download.
I just noticed this, no idea when it happens or why. In EU not US...

"Attention required" means you have to download by WiFi. They did this to save the carriers data network. I don't have WiFi so I spent a lot of times at the local McDonald's downloading games.

Interesting. Is there any link for this, something I can read? Seems pretty weird for MS to do it out of the blue with no warning.
As I stated, it does download after I switch 3G off in the Cellular settings. So it does download apps from mktplace but not through 3G.

I'm guessing a lot of people on here know this already but I recently discovered how to massively increase my Moto X's battery duration. Namely by switching off Mobile Data, I can then go a full 14 hours only dropping down to around 75% by the end. So now as soon as I get into work or any place where I'm on Wifi I switch off mobile data.
Makes me wonder why having mobile data switched on is expending so much battery power?
If you wanna increase that even further, just turn the whole thing off. The battery will last for weeks.

It is not shocking but somehow people tend to forget the basics. And it is also unnecessary while on wifi, which is the case and the advice he spoke of.
And I'd go even further and set 3G only with wifi, lollipop tends to switch from wifi to LTE by itself very often.
I've heard of people suggesting switching off wifi when your not using it, but never mobile data. So i just thought it might be a suggestion some people might appreciate. Take it or leave it.
Plus wifi is doing the exact same funtion as mobile data when your connected to it, so your not losing any functionality.
If your rooted you can even get Tasker to do the switch automatically.
This actually doesn't work. The data radio goes I to sleep mode when WiFi is on. Its not just doing its own thing while wood is on.
Definitely working on WiFi enhances battery life enormously but didn't try switching off mobile data

How is this possible? When your wifi radio is connected, the data side is completely disconnected. This is even reported in your 'status'.
I see your point, but all I know is that it definitely is making a large difference for me.
One theory I attributed it with was that with Wifi and Mobile Data switched on the phone is getting a lot more Wake Locks (perhaps doubling up), which in turn could also possibly be preventing the phone going into a Deep Sleep. But as the Wakelock detector app doesn't work any more (unless your rooted), I can't verify this.
Gonna test this out!
The issue with turning off mobile data is that it will cause problems with sending and receiving MMS, you may also have problems with SMS as well.
My HTC Sensation was really good at basically putting the radio to sleep when on Wifi and only waking when needing to send or receive data that will only work over the cell network.

I don't disable mobile data, but I do use tasker to switch to 3G when I'm connected to wifi. The LTE radio uses a lot more battery in poor signal areas (like my apartment) and I have noticed it helps me go from about 3 hours of screen time to 4.5. I think the MMS issues are a good point and I feel like this solution is slightly more elegant because even with mobile data disabled, the phone is still holding an LTE signal. Ymmv, obviously

First you'll need root and this plugin (make sure to enable external access in the plugin app)
Basically, create a profile that runs whenever you connect to a network (you can leave it blank for all networks or press the search button to choose just your home network).
The entry task would basically wait 10 seconds and then run the plugin choosing wcdma/gsm (auto) as the network mode. Choose then to add an exit task which simply recalls the plugin and chooses the network mode as LTE, wcdma, gsm. You can even add an extra step to each task at the end which has tasker display a toast that you can have say LTE enabled or 3g mode only

SMS is sent over Voice channels. MMS still requires data.
I double checked and tested this on my Pure Edition on T-Mobile.
Disabled Wifi and Cellular Data
Sent a standard text message, it was received by the other party. Attempted to send a photo message, it was not able to send from my phone as well as the other party did not receive it. Though it did resend when data was enabled.
Tasker can't turn off mobile data since Lollipop update....
Any sugestions?
