What on earth is this?
I was with a lot of doubts like you, until I see today the X10
It is THE **** of phone. The UI is ugly, and works like its running on a nintendo DS processor and 3fps, they dont have any advantage over HD2, NONE, and the release date is on march 2010 if all goes good.
not an option for me and a big fail for Sony.
i am surprised at how ugly the UI turned out. Also, the lag SHOULD be attributed to it being pre=release but it is so laggy that you have to assume some of that will make it into the final ROM

Considering the detailed description you gave regarding what you need your phone to do, it's obvious that the XPERIA is the phone for you.
You get the X10 and let us the HD2 gang know what you found out

The X10 looks like a nice phone. I personally think it looks better aesthetically than the HD2, especially in White. The UI will probably be improved before it's released and run faster than 3 FPS. The 8MP camera is also a plus, and I'd take an SE camera over an HTC camera any day.
All that being said, the HD2 has the bigger screen and the support of xda-developers
That's all I need for me to consider the HD2 better. That and SE hasn't made a good flagship phone in years! I'd bet they are going to botch up the X10 somehow and it's pretty much guaranteed to go through a few delays traditional SE style
knowing sony's track record on their UI in the xperia line, i doubt if anything will be improved from the pre-release version to the release version. I feel bad for SE fans because i truly love their phones and also the most aesthetically looking phones out there in the market. Sadly, that's all they're good at. The UI on the X1 and X2 (especially the X2) have been under scrutiny for how slow and choppy they are and after seeing the hands-on video, it seems like the downward trend will continue.
Gang, this is not even a Windows Mobile device

pretty not much of a point to ask this question here or in Xperia X10, most of the responders here like me have had already bought over in our mind with HD2. And I would strongly recommend HD2 against Xperia X10 for many reasons, but this is entirely my preferences. I would think again if it is based on WinMO.
too bad history

I back up this 100%
Sony promissed us to fix the X1 Xperia, it did not happen, Neither the P990 (freezing without warning), or the P910 . The P800 never got the pop mails to work 100% ...
Sorry Sony, track record is too bad ... never SE again

P990, P990 ... P990 ... We got to remember our mistakeS, SE take us for idiots ... a lot of promiss, never real fix ... Let's go for phone with working software, and that is not a SonyEricsson, i got the phones in my cabinets to prove it.
I clearly remember that X1 was suppose to get Windows mobile 7 .. we don t even get Win6.5 ... so ... bye bye SE, remember your mistakeS, so many companies finish the products, no reason to buy something unfinished.
To get a working X1, we got to develope hacks ... not what i call a good consumer support.

you'll have some time to find the best solution as the X10 won't be out for months - if SE are saying Q1 then that is a certainty for Q2 at the earliest...
Andoid does have the odd application that can use office files.
No more Updates for X2???
Anyone know when new update for X2 scheduled?
Not really, no one from SE announced yet...
So pity to x2 user. Damn... Can't really taste the true power of X2. I don't know what to do. I want to sell, but no one want to buy.
Oh, By The way, Is other Windows Mobile phone is better than X2? Or just the same?
Thanks

my opinion on the x2 is that it is a WinMo device. if there is something you don't like about it, change it. already i've put TF3d, over clocked it.
the stock R3XXX update was a huge improvement and slideview+ panels are brilliant.
plus 8mp camera and full keyboard does not hurt either, and because of the smaller screen the battery last longer than the hd2 and it fits easier in my pocket,
but if your looking for a new phone i would go with the hd2 just because it has attracted more people therefore there is more support for it. but its just based on preferences
Sony Ericsson has just abandonned the Xperia X2 and X1 phones (or all Windows Mobile devices).
In fact, honestly SE never really cared about these devices. The first X1 was a HTC development, solid in Software terms at the end but horrible at Hardware level. The X2 was the exactly opposite, great Hardware, awful Software.
But there's no more interest in this devce anymore.
Cheers.

Well, it's not really true.
Both phones got cruical updates, X2 is completely redesigned after last upgrade.
Officially SE didn't abandon anything.
However it is true they've made diastrous mistakes with X2
and pushed unfinished buggy firmwares, without any sign of improvements ATM.
i am SE mobile user for the past 6 years and wanted to always stick with SE device... but my X2 experience has changed my perception.... i will no more use SE devices... at the moment looking to get rid of my X2 and switch to iphone...
Em... I like SE phone.but this X2 make me crazy. My only hope is SE declare the next update for X2 and without anymore bugs. Of course SE should really try it first before launch to x2 user.
Nb : I really want to find and install hand writing recognition. As long as I know, PDA or PocketPC should have this feature.
I am not a fussy phone user.
If my phone could just alert me when messages are received consistently, if my phone would always unlock when i want it to, if the screen would not dim so quickly with no way to alter it, i would be pleased.
All of which the X2 is unable to fulfill. Colour me disgusted, SE.
I simply just can't understand why some people are still defending SE and the X2, saying that's only "few minor bugs".
The only reason that I still with this phone is that I cannot sell it, and the iPhone 4 hasn't arrived to my country yet.
Jolo.

The mistake is bigger because this is substantially a great phone, which could be on the first line of last batch of WM devices.
I'm using it and must say love it in most part.
However it has glitches, somehow I'm able to squeeze most of it. In many ways it's great.
But the truth is they never felt on their back angry customers breath.
I think they're whether too proud and rude,
or too old fashioned in their approach.
And they reach a success with X10, so you know, no reason to panic

If you go to settings Settings>System>Backlight and Power Management>Advanced you can change the settings.
I did this and it worked for a while. But then, sometimes, after 5 seconds it goes dark.
But after I make the change it stops doing the 5 second thing. . . for a while.
Yes a bug, it sucks, but there are ways to DEAL with it.
As for the unlock, yes I see what you are talking about. I keep pressing and nothing, nothing then all of a sudden, it slides!!!
Annoying to say the least.
Sony should make the device work out of the box. Unfortunately this is not the case. We either deal with it and come up with our own solutions or sell the X2. Too bad no wants to buy the X2 but then again I don't blame them, it is a buggy machine.
However...X2 is still not meet most user requirement. Some tweak and fix are not enough. Hope SE really care to make update for us. I want to change X2 to X10, but so pity, no one will buy my X2. Because of the bugs. I choosed the wrong phone.

All of us picked up the wrong phone. You're not alone.
Sadly, SE will not release another update. This device is absolutely dead for this company, same as X1.
Even, Sony Ericsson will not have a Windows Phone 7 device at launch. They're fully with Android only now.
Cheers and good luck with this piece of crap.

Erm. dude. I KNOW.
A solution isn't a solution when it doesn't work well. It is still a compromise. And dealing with it, is a massive compromise.
Its plain stupid that we users are compromising on our user experience on simple things. For a premium, top range phone no less.

I actually returned the phone to the seller on the basis that it does not offer functions as declared by the manufacturer, specifically "USB mass storage" mode. OK, it wasn't easy and I settled for somewhat less money that the phone costed me, but it was still more than the price of a used phone. But it all depends on local customs, laws and the will of seller.
Are you saying the X2 does not even have MassStorageUSB? Not even after MR2 update??? Wow!

Well actually not true.
Actually just after connecting this to PC and starting
WMDevice Center you can browse both sd card and internal memory.
In reverse X1 mass storage allows only sd card management.
To much *****ing is not sensible either.
Well i sold my X10 today on ebay for $425. My reasons for selling are, as i am a first time sony mobile owner i quickly realize how the future with updates will be, always one step behind the competition. I love the way the X10 looks but I have pre ordered the Nokia N8 and cant wait to use the 12 mp camera with xenon flash. So long X10 owners club its been fun.

i must ask though, just out of interest. what does your phone not do that it so urgently needs an update for? not having the latest version of the OS is not really an answer, because the phone functions perfectly well on good old 1.6
Dont get me wrong, im not ripping on you....just curious.
i would LOVE to have a newer OS on my phone for bragging rights, but thats all it really is - bragging rights. The phone works perfectly fine for me, and the few updates that have come out so far have improved it anyway
my 2 cents
Well the world lost an X10 owner and gained one as I just got mine yesterday (AT&T)
I came from a Captivate and prefer the X10. It may have had 2.1, but it also had lousy reception and of course broken gps. It was a nice phone, but was kind of laggy among other things.
I would like to see an update to 2.1, but it's not a big deal as I also have a Nexus One.
Good luck!
Men, I hope u like your new cell phone!!
I had a Nokia N95 and used to love it, but I honestly think that symbian is the one that is chasing the competition.... I agree that Sony is a little behind in system updates, but not all that much since they say that by the end of september (or hopefully earlier) x10 will have android 2.1....
I really think that symbian is a dead os, just forgot to lay down...
but then again, I hope you love your new cell phone as much as I love my x10!!
and YES, I want android 2.1 in it YESTERDAY!!!
i own several nokia phone... do they even update? i never seem to got one.
Having owned a few Nokia's in the past I can tell you that Nokia upgrades generally consist of bug fixes & very little in the way of new features. This may not apply to the N8 because it is running the new Symbian 3 OS, & as such is likely to get plenty of updates. I would never want to own any 1.0 product I generally prefer to let someone else do the beta testing .

Nokia lie to us the customer.
I own n900 before. They promise us that it will be the first meego phone but suddenly it just only for developers and not the end users. Even the maemo only roll out few updates and still doesnt fix up some of the bug.
I used many phone from nokia and im really dissapointed at nokia but i will still hold to n900 and my x10 as both the phone itself good in many ways.

Exactly, as far as I can remember (ex-Nokia user of 4 smartphones), there was never any updates other than bug fixes which barely do much of a difference, they lost my respect after the first generation of N-series, after N90 and N95, disappointed due to it being laggy and buggy, they don't make phones like they used to anymore sadly
I don't mind you leaving X10 but leaving android for symbian? you're mad xD

If you really feel that way about it...I don't understand why you would ditch it. Anways, I love my X10 and I traded in my Nexus One running froyo for it and never looked back. The only phone that has me second guessing right now is the unreleased in Canaded "Desire HD"....until I read reviews on that, and then compare it to my Xperia X10 with 2.1 and the second half of the update process Ill decide then.
The dell streak is a 5" tablet, not a mobile phone. If I wanted to carry around a plastic brick I'd buy a netbook.
P.S. If you're not satisfied with Sony Ericssons level of customer service then you obviously haven't read what streak owners think of their device with 2.1.

Hello all, I just wanted to inform you all that Xperia X1 is not available from SE anymore, so if your device goes beyond repair within warranty time, you are likely to get your money back or get it changed to an another phone.
This is what happened to me, my Xperia's screen and screen ribbon cable broke somewhat simultaneously. I returned my Xperia to the seller store to be checked out, and they came back to me with a letter saying that Xperia is not available anymore, asking my bank account number to give my money back.
As of this moment I am waiting eagerly my money to get a Desire HD, so thank you Xperia community, you have been very helpful!
I'm gonna send my phone in because my keyboards doubles letters as we might all have experienced...
I wonder whether the Xperia Service Center is still working here in Germany. But I suppose so...They'd never give me money for the device now. Althought that would have been fantastic. Have fun...and (in my humble opinion) wait for WP 7!
Refirbished model is the most likely thing
I bought mine last year 619€ need to get the money back lol

It was funny actually, when i found out vodafone was no longer stocking the x1 the dude on the phone said for me to check GSMARENA.com to see what other good phones there are out there etc. At the time guess what the top phone on GSMARENA was? the X1!

Haha that is pretty funny, to this date at GSMARENA.com the X1 is ranked 6th and by Interest it's ranked 3rd and it's the only phone from 2008( Well there is the N82 from 2007 and the 5800 Xpress Music but we all know the X1 is way better than those phones lol) at the top of these lists now that's saying something. I also found this image from phonearena.com a couple of days ago.
To me it's logic that the X1 is not available anymore. It was launched in late 2008 and had been available for almost 2 years despite the fact that it's successor, the X2, was introduced. The home electronics store of my choice here in Switzerland sold the last X1 somewhere last month.
