HTC Dream in Australia - G1 General

I have been lucky enough to get hold of a HTC Dream and have found it 10/10. Has anyone found any good applications for Australian based users?
I noticed that there is now a "HTC Dream Australia" facebook page created. Do you think this means that there is going to be some activity in the market soon?

Hey man, I'm an Aussie user. Have had mine for 2 months or so.

There's a few other Australian G1 users on here too.
Most apps are all available to us (but some region specific ones will launch in the market too). Any type of apps you're looking for in particular?

HTC's latest device.
By the sounds of things there is going to be a device launch tomorrow for HTC's latest device.
"Here at Giz HQ, we've been gazing at our crystal balls, dialing up 1900-psychics and consulting the stars to try and make sense of all the HTC Dream Android rumors we've been hearing the last couple of weeks. And now, like some gigantic puzzle of epic proportions, we've put the pieces back together to create an all-but confirmed analysis of what you can expect: The HTC Dream Android phone on Optus, on sale later this month (with an announcement coming Thursday)."

In my opinion the plans seem to be reasonable. They are priced a little higher than the iPhone, but you need to remember that this phone isn't the iPhone. I would handle paying extra for the Dream, as the Dream offers me more in return.

Don't throw it away! :)

First off, I don't want this to come off as any form of begging, so please read the whole post before making judgments.
I have noticed that many of the people posting about their X1 have things to complain about or simply don't like their device. If this is you, and you're planning on junking your device, maybe you would like to donate it to me instead? Of course, if you can get a refund and need the money, certainly do so; I've slowly been saving for an X1 and should have one in the next couple of months (assuming SE hasn't announced an X2 device by then). However, time is precious, and many things could be done in those few months while waiting.
About me: I've been programming for about 7-8 years now, and taking apart electronic devices and hacking around at the hardware since I was maybe 10. I enjoy cooking up new ROMs (who doesn't love voiding their warranty? =D) and writing software for various mobile devices. I'm also a long-standing Sony Ericsson fan, and have in fact recently gone back to my K550i after a few months with the Samsung Behold.
If/When I do get an X1, I have several plans, including:
- Developing panels (I have a few ideas in mind already, and the SDK installed, but development isn't practical without the proper testing device).
- Developing games (I have a few ideas in mind here as well, plus games I could easily port from those I've written for other devices).
- Developing WM software
- Possibly some ROM cooking, but no guarantee on a time-frame
- Exploring the hardware for tweaks/hacks/etc.
Now, as I said, there is certainly no rush to do this, and I have no specific need for anyone to donate a phone, as I will likely be able to buy one in a few months. However, if someone did contribute here, it would be helpful in advancing everyone's Xperience (I've noticed panels and games are particularly lacking, yeah?). So if you're planning on throwing out your X1, or simply have too much money to manage properly, feel free to contact me!
The economy in the US can't be that bad surely ?
The problem you have is how the US distribute phones, you buy an expensive call plan, then you have to buy the phone at full price
If you shop around in the UK you can get 600mins, 1000texts + unlimited data for £30 a month, 18m contract...with a free X1.
What the heck is going on in the USA Telecoms market ?
You are being ripped off big time !
lol that's what i'm wondering! we only get free phones if we start a new two year contract... but the phones are so worthless (like cheap flip nokias and motorolas). it costs so much to have a nice phone. i had to save 2 and a half paychecks just so i could buy my x1 :/
also Kuraudo, in microsoft visual studio, which you will need to develop your own panels, sony has developed an xperia emulator so you can see how your panel will work on the device. I was going to try and develop some panels but visual studio used up too much of my laptops resources so i had to get rid of it.
The US has piss-poor carrier competition. The big four are Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-mobile: Verizon and Sprint are ruled out because they're CDMA networks, and T-mobile uses its proprietary UMTS 1700 (3G) network. That just leaves AT&T to carry all the UMTS 850/1900 devices. It's not like Europe where multiple carriers operate on UMTS 2100, meaning any UMTS 2100 device could be used on any carrier, and therefore carriers will compete with each other to get exclusivity on high-end phones. With AT&T, they don't really have to compete with anyone -- and you can also place some blame on their monopoly with the iPhone.
Also, the US economy might not be that bad (it could be a lot worse, but hopefully it won't get that way), but a lot of people in the US still only use their phone for voice and SMS, which means there isn't really a high demand for 3G phones from the average consumer -- except, again, for the iPhone. And if the economy is taking a dive, there's less incentive for anyone to spend more money on cellphone service.
Anyway, that's getting off-track. To OP: have you seen HTC's leaked 2009 roadmap? The X1 looked like a great device but there have been so many quality control issues that I decided not to get one, and now with HTC planning to release a whole slew of devices in 2009, the X1 is looking more and more like "old news".

I've already had this installed, and have used it to some extent, but it's not very ideal to base an entire development on the emulation (as it's slower and usability is different; i.e. comparing 800 pixels in width on a 17" screen vs. a 3" screen?).

I haven't seen it, and I'll look into it, but if your issue was with the X1's construction quality, it doesn't seem like you should be shopping from the same manufacturer (you dislike how HTC built the X1, so instead you want to buy HTC phones).
As far as I know, the "cracks and paint" issue with the X1 casing was limited to a few specific weeks of its production, and I'm under the impression that the more current ones would be more durable (an e-mail response I got from SE when I asked about the cracks and stuff said that it won't be a problem if I buy from sonystyle.com, which is either a way of trying to make more money... or of indicating that I should be buying newly-produced phones, rather than phones on eBay from the bad production weeks).
As far as the speed problem goes, it doesn't seem like there's a large enough latency that it would concern me during normal use. Plus, I'd imagine that a firmware update will eventually come to improve it.
I'll have a look at the HTC roadmap and get back to this thread, but...is there any news of a leaked SE roadmap?
Edit: had my look, but I didn't see anything too eye-catching (besides a hot pink phone that was outright ugly, to say the least). Didn't see any specs, but I didn't even like the way most of them looked.

UPDATED: Vodafone ARE pulling the handset from their product line!

Hi Guys,
This is all getting very interesting. Firstly let me state that i have an HD2 so this isnt one of those threads complaining about not getting one etc etc...
Mine has no issues whatsoever. The only problem i had was with the camera and this has been fixed completely by todays release of a camera update.
So... i have just read on the Vodafone forums that Vodafone will no longer be stocking the HD2!!!! This little snippet of info was posted by an official Vodafone rep.
I am now hearing similar stories from T-Mobile.
Is anyone here in know about whats going on? loads of rumours flying around at the moment....

nice one mate.... thats cleared that up!
shame though... i was up for a bit of drama!!
oh dear... seems its not over... the post above was written yesterday whereas the following was posted TODAY by vodafone:
Hi guys,
Just to clarify, Vodafone stores are no longer stocking the HD2.
There is limited stock online, however once this has gone, there won’t be any further coming into stock.
All the best,

lol this happens every time a new handset comes out.
Operator A says 'we don't have any as it's been recalled/firmware update/whatever' so you don't go running off to operator B.
I'd be amazed if this is being withdrawn from any supplier.
I'll believe what HTC (and common sense) is saying though..
im on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next tbh...
We should see an update from Vodafone posted soon in the thread i linked above.
Ok... its official... they've pulled it!!!!!
Hello everyone,
As promised, here's our update:
We won't be re-stocking the HTC HD2 for general consumer sales once our current devices sell out. There's been a great deal of interest since we made the HTC HD2 available to buy in November and our initial supply quickly sold out. With subsequent deliveries of stock we've prioritised the fulfilment of back orders for the device.[/size] Given the wide and expanding range of smartphones available to Vodafone customers, including the iPhone in early 2010, we're confident that we continue to offer the broadest range of devices to our customers, more details of which can be found at http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-phones/all-phones
Kind regards,
Tom

Praise the lord for o2
seems a very stupid decision on vodafone's part, especially as the official comment they seem to be giving to press is that there is no room for the HD2 amongst their current and future smartphone lineup. Surely they would have known what handsets they have and will be getting soon, they should never have sold the HD2 if they were going to stop selling it after a few weeks.
Glad I got mine when I did. But this is a terrible move by Vodafone. Why stop selling one of the best current smartphones on the market less than a month after you introduce it!

Just spoken to a guy at Vodafone over the phone about this. He said this was the first he had heard about it. He also told me, that compared to all other phones, the people who phoned about problems on HTC phones was a LOT smaller than the list of people who phoned with problems on other ones.
And sorry sunking101, but have you used the HD2 for a prolonged period of time. The keyboard only takes some getting used to, because of the capacitive screen. Windows Mobile is NOT a nightmare to use. This is just a lot of crap spouted by review sites, tech blogs and Android and iPhone OS users.
Sure, it has some flaws. But most of these can be fixed. And Windows Mobile gives a LOT more functionality, which I think is worth a bit of getting used to.

That's probably down to poor market research lol - they've obviously planned on the iphone selling like hot cakes when they get them and have totally overlooked the possibility of the HD2 flying off the shelves... my guess is that they have pre-ordered absolute tons of iphones that they'll have no chance of flogging if many of their customers get an HD2.
I have to say that I got one from them and that apart from the camera issue (obviously now fixed) I have none of the other major problems (touch wood it stays that way! ) - sms are fine, call quality is fine, keyboard is fine.

I've used it for around 2 weeks now and the keyboard is horrendous. There are certain features that I absolutely love - the screen for one, internet browsing, the decent You Tube app and internet sharing but the basic features of a mobile phone seem to have been forgotten by HTC. This phone is awful for calls (terribly loud even on the lowest volume setting and distorted, crackly audio), awful for texting (nasty keyboard, delays with SMS sending and receiving, plus occasionally texts going to the wrong person!!!) and the calendar is poor. The camera is ok in my book, as is the size of the device. It's just the basics it gets wrong and ultimately they're the most important for most users.
Fair enough mate. I personally, have had zero issues with call quality or texting. Sometimes a hard reset can fix those issues =p
The keyboard simply need getting used to.
To be honest I smell a rat here, I have had an HD2 now for about 4 week and it has been fine in fact it’s the best phone I have ever used. No problems at all.
I followed the HD2 for months on loads of forums and there seems to be a small but very vocal number of people going on about how god awful the phone is, how is has major problems and is a waste of time and money. Most of these posters are new to the forums that they post in and almost seem to have joined to have a go at the HD2. (sunking101 Join Date: Nov 2009)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583618
Now I know it’s not perfect and will have faults but to be honest I have seem this so often that I am starting to think it’s a campaign to put people off the HD2. This story seem to me to be more of the same, I find it hard to believe that Vodafone would go the trouble to test and clear the phone for it network only to stock it for what two weeks?

Two weeks and we've all had to put up with your trolling every step of the way. Given that nobody else seems to be suffering from all the problems that you are it's pretty safe to assume that you are the problem, not the phone. I'd recommend that you replace your HD2 with something simple like a Motorola RAZR that you won't find too confusing.

Hmmm actually just noticed the bit that says "general consumer sales" so it could be that it's going to be for business sales only?

No doubt the iphone will sell quite well when it does come out on vodafone but in the store i work at for o2 we've had more people over the last couple of weeks ask about the hd2 then any other phone, so vodafone could lose quite a few customers who wanted the hd2 over an iphone as a result of this decision

Should i buy Hero or not?!

Hi,
im in need of a new smartphone, and i have been thinking of buying the Hero since it costs somewhat cheap and almost all the reviews said that its a really good phone, moreover, it looks good.
but some say that its a bit old, and that new phones are really close to get released so i better wait a bit more and get the new ones.
is it a bad/late time to buy a Hero? what do u think of the phone in general? are there enough apps (compared to the iphone)?
or should i want more time and get the new ones? if yes, then is tehre an idea of how much they gonna cost? cuz im not willing to spend much on a phone.
or should i forget all this and just get an IPhone 3G (not the 3gs cuz it costs a lot)?!?!
any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks.
about the iphone... that really is up to u and your personal comfort in a little tinkering with the OS. If you are scared and want things set for u and comfined to what they think it good for u.. then iphone is a good device.
I love my hero and it is great! The Android OS is GREAT and lets the owner more control of what he wants his phone to do.
Yes, it is old tech, but it can handles itself very well. It's OS is scheduled to be upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 in Q2 (maybe at end of March). This new OS will refresh its abililties.
If you can wait a few months for a new phone...
I would! New phones are scheduled to drop, and what carrier you use will depend on which phone u can get. My guess on the new prices will be $180 -$250. But on the flip side, currently the Hero is $80 with new 2 yr contract.
Again, I love my hero/android...best phone I have ever owned. Most users should be fine with the Hero's abilities.
but I will be looking to upgrade in fall, to new android phone, because I love tech toys.
Hoped i helped.. a little
I got my Hero about 3 weeks ago. Cost me £10 on a 2 year contract with Orange UK.
I considered waiting for the new phones to drop, but after reading about all the problems the Nexus One seems to be having, I decided that a more "mature" handset would be best. Also, any new phone would cost considerably more at launch. If I decide to upgrade the handset in 12 months (although I don't think I will), I can just buy a new one knowing that I haven't spent much on the Hero.
As for the Hero itself I love it! Sure, it could be a little faster or have more RAM, but I'd say that about whatever device I had. I can honestly say that the Hero has changed the way I do many things... from emails, Facebook & Twitter to ebook reading & geo-logging. The Android Market is great, with many great free apps (e.g. Astrid, Listen, etc)
Obviously the choice is yours, but for cost & functionality, I'd recommend the Hero to anyone!
Cheers.
htc hero
I got my HTC Hero yesterday on contract with three uk for £28 per month for 750 mins, unlimited text and internet .... the phone is superb .. it is very easy to set up .. emails come straight to your phone (I was told that 3 email push was available but its not as its not supported but the inbuilt email client is superb) the market place has loads of stuff and the phone is fast and doesnt lag even though ive loads on the screens ....
i looked at the iphone also but pound for pound the hero is best for money and to be honest you will get most apps on the hero ..... and good thing is 90% are free unlike iphone
I had debated to wait for the next htc that 3 uk are getting however the chaps told me its like a brick and thats one thing the hero isnt
highly recomend it !!!
The Hero has a great amount of RAM compared to other android smartphones, I sold my iPhone, and purchased a used (practically new) hero from two chinese foreign exchange students for only $250!
Honestly, with MrBang's proformance ROM, I am a witness to speeds which I thought were't possible on anything but a Nexus One. My phone is snappy and it's speed is comparable to that of an iPhone 3GS.
Not to mention how easy it is to overclock it to 528Mhz (iPhone 3GS runs at 600Mhz)
Just download the widget from the market!
I hope that whatever decision you make, you're happy with what you choose
If you want a phone that will be taken care of, updated timely and frequently, and so forth, get a Nexus One.
If you want a phone that has already been all but abandoned by HTC, with bugs still looming from when it was released, then get a Hero.
It's a nice phone and I have one myself, but really, I think the best phone right now is the Nexus One, since it is supported directly by Google, as opposed to just another phone that HTC is tweaking slightly and throwing down the assembly line.

Iphone 3GS runs at 800mhz AND it's using a far more powerful cpu/gpu, not sure what you're trying to compare.
Hero is kinda outdated, I'd wait for the Legend.
Haha, funny you mention it cause Legend will also be rather outdated hardware wise. Rather go for the Desire.
That's what I'm trying to say. HTC is throwing slightly different hardware into slightly different cases and selling it. They don't appear to be trying to innovate at all. Both of these claims are supported by the fact that their LATEST AND GREATEST is just a Hero redux.
Honestly, the Android phone to have right now is the Nexus One/Desire. Even though the N1 is manufactured by HTC, it is supported by Google. That means it will likely be the first device to get every upgrade until Google decides otherwise. It also has significantly better hardware than the HTC branded LATEST AND GREATEST (i.e. HTC Legend).
I would not go the Hero route at all if I was buying now.
I have a Hero and HTC are not doing the current users (mugs) any favours by cynically stalling the 2.1 roll out.
Nexus One is the best choice for a new Androider. For me though, I will avoid HTC where possible as a result of this Hero 2.1 debacle. I have owned HTC mobiles for many years but this current level of customer contempt is the Kaiser 3D qualcomm issue all over again

Errhhh - the latest and greatest HTC branded Android phone is the Desire, which is essentially the same as the N1.
Whilst Hero was HTC's top of the range Android phone when it was released, the Legend never will be.

I love this phone regardless of how old it is. I just got myself a new contract with T-mobile on one of these. Brilliant.

You're right. I edited my post but forgot to get everything. I still think it is safe to assume that the N1 will still be updated more frequently (depending on how the hierarchy is setup now between Google and HTC for the N1).
I have my HTC Hero since 1 week and a half ago. I must say that it hasn't dissappointed me even though i expected A LOT from it. I came from an HTC Touch and the change is incredible. I bought it "2d hand", i say it between quotes because the seller had open it just to see how it was. I spent 130€ + 11€ for network unlocking. The advantage? I'm not tied to any company. I don't have the last technology, neither the best phone, but i'm pretty happy with what I have. The relation between the money I spent, and the company freedom, doesn't have price
But I have to say aswell, that if you have money for a Nexus One, go for it. If not, i highly recommend you the Hero.
I suggest going with either Nexus 1, or any of the new HTC phones coming out excluding Legend. I'm not dissing HTC or anything, but their delayed response to any updates on the HTC Hero, just...Dissapoints me. If you can't afford the newer models, then HTC Hero is still a good choice, all because of XDA you can still test out Android 2.1.
We need to know your budget really before saying "yes you should buy" or "no you shoudn't", if you could pick up a cheap hero, and don't mind getting your hands a little dirty, then by all means go for it and put a hacked 2.1 ROM on, or wait for the HTC release.
Failing that, and if you are a little more flush, then get an N1.

Android - Interesting year ahead.. very interesting

Recently sold my HD2 - although a cracking device which i personally miss.. No Windows 7 Mobile upgrade was enough to annoy me into selling.
Purchasing a HTC Desire this week..
It does seem like an interesting year ahead for Android itself - the application store has grown a huge amount over the last few months.. Motorola Droid pretty much changed the fortunes of that company, plus sold more in it's first 2 weeks than the iPhone 2G did. Which i find simply jaw dropping.
Now Samsung, LG and Sony are all releasing Android phones... Pretty much abandoning their own platforms for the most part.. Which can only mean more apps for Android - any developer would be insane not to with the user base about to exploid with majority of mobile manufactures moving to it (with exception of Nokia obviously)
I was going to wait for the new iPhone release in June - then again.. Any upgrade Apple will make will be a 5mp camera, AMOLED screen, 1GHZ(ish) CPU and larger screen (pos).. Which HTC Desire has, so i can't see myself wanting it over the HTC Desire in a few months.. Plus i general detest how overly priced the iPhone is..
I've always thought what set the iPhone apart from current phones - isn't the OS interfaced or the hardware.. HTC have caught up in that respect.. But the application store was always it's biggest seller - more to do with third party developers than Apple itself... But now with Android getting such a massive uptake - you gotta wonder.. In 6 months is that really going to be the case? How long will it be till the Android marketplace is actually bigger and better than the iPhone AppStore... It's got to happen.. Simply from a numbers game - developers have a much higher potential earnings with a much larger user base..
Your opinions on Android?
Android just pwns.
Case closed.
Well,
I used an LG phone with propietary OS before and it sucked. Switched to a Windows Mobile phone later (used 6.5) and it sucked too! Apps? I did see like 5 good apps on the Marketplace.
I'm now using the Nexus One for 2 months and a week and this is my first Android phone and I fcking love it and most of the apps are great! I even see that some iPhone Apps were already "ported" to Android.
You see Samsung, LG and Sony are all releasing Android phones and that means Android will be grow a lot in the next 6 months! There'll be much more apps at the end of the year because everyone who's buying a new good phone is going to buy Android (I hope xD) and develop for it.
I've had my nexus for about a month & a half, before that a g1, then a wm running dash (excalibur) definitely loving android. It's linux, you can't go wrong. To be honest though I've only held an iphone once. It was kinda cool, but apple locks their **** down too much. Just my .02
Just received my Nexus One yesterday and I could not be happier. This thing is so fast and full of features that flow very well. The apps that I have decided to use are well built, many are as nice as iphone apps..
I've had the g1 since it came out. The app store has just been growing every week.
I'm still rockin a g1 cuz I'm waiting for a darn good keybored android phone to come out with amazing specs. I'm on tmobile, I thought about the cliq, but there's not much devolopment yet. Although that's not amazing specs at all lol. Although I hear the cliq is built like a metal monster
Android is the beez knees. Simple as is.
And with so many phone company's picking up android
Iphone will be down eventually. All in due time when they can't get over the same design
Sorta like the razr hahah
The Android Marketplace is going to sink the Apple App Store for sure.
It seems that developers have an easier time managing and publishing their apps through Google instead of Apple. Apple's store censosres too much and people with jail broken phones can't find any apps for their rooted devices . In the Android marketplace you can find root only apps. Open source is going to win and beat closed source. That is the way it should be.
I've heard many iPhone devs are going to develop android apps now

If they make them as nice as the iphone apps I wont mind spending cash on them, winmo apps were always so ugly! (in general)
I have to agree.
Android is growing so fast that Apple started wetting themselves and took a first strike against HTC as a warning shot accross the bow. Apple may end up suing everybody making Android phones to try and slow down the rabid growth. We'll have to wait and see what happens though.
Seeing the new Android SDK supports openGL ES 2.0 makes me very happy, as some iPhone users were still sassing me on my Nexus with games like Streetfighter 4 and stuff. Now it's my turn. (as soon as some decent games are developed)
Honestly. 1.5 made android what it is today, by making it into a usable experience.
I downloaded the Android SDK the first day it was available, and ran it on my computer to see what could be done with it. I swiftly dismissed Android as nearly unusable (at that point, at least I was right)
I ended up replacing the Cingular 8525 I had at that point running WM6.1 with a HTC Fuze running WM6.1. What a great device with awful software. WM isn't nearly as bad as people say it is, the problem is most rom chefs don't put on near the same amount of polish that I did with any Doom maps I made, or any of the Stepmania themes I made. To see problems solved in other roms crop up in a rom 4 versions later started to annoy me. Plus, chef's obsessions with some of HTC's awful UI staples (I swear, I will be the one to kill the engineer who wrote the full screen volume control. A change in volume shouldn't be a project, it should be a task) and the little things piled up. It never got any better. This was the future.
Let me say one thing. CRC, the chef for the HTC Hermes, is the main reason I obtained this view of the future of WM. If you ever get stuck with a HTC Hermes, use his roms. They're excellent, and bug free.
Just about the time I was getting REALLY sick of the idiocy around WM roms, and 6.5 in general, the Android porting project for the MSM7200 chipsets started releasing builds that ran more than acceptably on the Raphael. So I got involved. Downloaded some, tested kernels, the whole nine yards. This new view of Android, with a usable UI, and honest to god workable system made the decision for me. I just had to pick a device. At this point I knew I would want a Hardware keyboard, and that I would want 3g. Being an AT&T customer, this severely limited my options as to what devices I could have access to (yeah, at that point, around October last year, to none). Eventually the Droid came out and the Milestone was announced. I ended up buying a Telus Milestone from Canada on the first day it was out. Haven't looked back. If you are on the fence about android as an OS, try it out. Its available on so many of the WM phones that are talked about on this board, so if you can, run one of those builds from SD. Or just go into a Verizon store and ask to play with a Droid. They'll gladly let you play with it, because they're selling more of those than they know what to do with. Its really a great operating system, and everyone who is complaining about not having 2.1 yet is splitting hairs.
I was a long time WM user and a flashing junkie. I started off with the HTC xv6700, then the Vogue, Diamond and Touch Pro. After having a WM device for almost 5 years I just got sick of their over-priced 3rd party apps and programs and wanted to move onto something bigger and better and didn't want to wait for WP7. When I started checking for a new device, there was only one direction to go and it wasn't going to be an iphone. Android was the logical choice and this is coming from someone who wasn't initially a fan, I was loyal to WM, but after going into the Verizon store and playing with the Eris and Droid, I was sold. I had the Android ports on my Vogue and TP, but nothing is like the real thing. I found a cheap Eris on craigslist and it has been great, especially since the Eris Dev Team finally rooted it. As nice of a phone as the Eris is, I'm on the look out for something with more balls(The Incredible!!) which hopefully should be out in a month or so, which makes me really happy I didn't use my NE2 on the Eris. I can just about guarantee that HTC and Android are going to run away with the smartphone market, leaving WM, apple and RIM in the dust. With some great "super phones" coming out(EVO & Incredible) this should be a great year for Andoid, not to mention HTC.

[News] Motorola Shuts down operations in Asia!

So I chanced upon this news on Twitter: http://m.gsmarena.com/motorola_shut...php?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
I can understand that they want to concentrate on higher end devices, but why totally pulling out of Asia? They still have fans in Asia and they did not even try selling the Razr HD or something before coming to the decision. What was Google thinking there?
Also, Motorola SEA has said that they would continue giving customers support and warranty. However, after the news of Motorola's staff getting laid-off, people had been complaining that their questions were left ignored for days and they've yet to receive any replies to date.
(And to think I've still got a few months on my warranty)
It seems like a great excuse by Motorola not to upgrade the international atrix to ICS. Oh well, seems like I'll never be able to get my hands on the Razr HD
Opinions?
Sent from that Atrix.
I'll wait for reliable or official sources to confirm, but this would be quite drastic. BGR India, hmmm. I can't imagine they would pull out of China, where their phones are literally sold at every store in every city. While they have never been crazy popular, they seem to have always done well in sales volume. They just opened an official Motorola store at one of the malls in Guangzhou, so I wish I knew some Mandarin I could question the news coming out. Hopefully they are simply cutting down on the number of models they sell, and going to concentrate just on a few core phones. I would hate to see Motorola exit the market, especially now with Google's influence.
I suppose my next phone was like going to be from Xiaomi or Huawei, but if I could find a new Motorola in the next few months that can make me as happy as the Atrix, I would stick with them for their great hardware.
The Motorola Southeast-asian Facebook page has gone ridiculously silent, not even replying anyone in the last few weeks (other than updating their website and info). Customer support also dead.
Sent from that Atrix.
Hey,
I don't know anything about Asia as a whole, but in Israel at least, Motorola Mobility closed all their facilities and laid off all their workers. I think that it is something that came directly from google, as a way to cut their losses or something like that...

They are always silent and not responding to queries. Their support is as good as dead. I am glad my warranty is about one month left.
Motorola stock ROM sucks and they just provide one pathetic and buggy update from Froyo to GB. Motorola has never been popular in SG, their reputation is really bad. Almost everyone is using iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phone. IMO, Google is trying to cut their losses. They are only interested with Motorola's patents. Haha..
I am sure it is to cut losses. But methinks Google is gonna try and bring USA back into the mix sooner or later. Pure speculation on my part, but Google does need to cut as many losses as possible before they start investing more here. Investing in the USA is very costly and a big uphill battle right now when you're competing against pennies on the dollar. No need to look farther than the nexus q. It was shunned before it was even released because of price and features. If america wants jobs, they need to buy home brew and see that Google is one big beta company and the features will come if you're patient. Not much of that in the USA either. Short term profits are more important than long term stability. See where that is getting us in many other markets?
need more high def music...
Update:
Although we are consolidating about a third of our facilities globally, and slimming our operation in India as you reported, we continue to have a significant presence in several key markets in Asia-Pacific in addition to Korea and Australia. This includes, among others, mainland China, which remains one of our main R&D hubs (and where I am based). We should be able to share more information once we’re further through the reorganization process, but Asia-Pacific is an important part of Motorola Mobility’s future.
