Facebook on Fring - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Another lackluster Windows Mobile solution: Fring, the IM and Internet call app, has a new, free Facebook add-on that seems to have most Facebook functionality, including viewing friends, their photos, their statuses, pokes, adding friends, sending messages, etc. I don't know if chat is enabled, but everything else works OK. But.....
1) it is SLOW AS HELL AND CLUNKY. i don't think it caches anything and with the ever-present spinning hourglass appears to request everything over and over. don't know if i need to enable a setting for caching or not.
2) the interface, while somewhat finger-friendly, needs A LOT of work on the eye-candy front.....but I guess there's only so much you can expect from an add-on.
3) it scrolls right-left to display long statuses or answers on the information pages. I guess that saves space, but it's annoying.
4) it took forever to start up. It would crash when run initially and took several tries to load up my Facebook info.
despite my complaints, it does get the job done and probably has what most people need. if it was faster it wouldn't be that bad.
EDIT: fwiw, just read that AT&T has been having data problems lately, so the slowness of the app might be related to that.

Facebook update causes TouchFlo Restarts

Every time I update Facebook in Updates and Events it restarts TouchFlo. I've run into this problem before... After a hardware restart it fixed it but i'm sure there has to be a way to fix this. I have tried undoing anything I've done before this problem occured... But I've changed nor done anything... It just happen, any help will appreciated.

WE could really use some more info. Rom, OS version, Things of this type will most likely get you some answers
ROM version: 1.19.661.3 "Stock ROM"
Windows Mobile 6.1
Carrier: Telus "CDMA"
It seems i've fixed the problem, well more like it fixed it self, I took one of my contacts off the facebook link and it seems the crashing has stoped. It just seems weird to me that it would do that, would like to know the real reason behind this. Maybe there's a limit of contacts you can have linked to Facebook
Now that we're speaking of facebook on the TP2, does anyone know how to chat on facebook similar to the iphone app?
Ok, my reply is two fold....
@TeamSir
I ran into the same problem. I took a bit of a different route, though... It only seemed to crash on me when I updated from within the address book editing screen (not always, but often). On the Status Tab (Third or forth tab when in Address book, or viewing a contact), when I've updated from there, I haven't had any problems. Weird, but who knows.... Also noticed that if they Contact in the address book is exactly like it is on facebook, it automatically (after confirmation) sets everything up for you.
@Cacaman123 There isn't a way to "chat" through this integrated facebook feature. There are, however two options for you to look into.
Option #1
There is a Facebook App on the Microsoft website. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile. If you haven't already, sign up for an account (it's worth it, trust me... free apps and games, some of them pretty good too, some are demos, too). Once in there, arrow over "Free Extras" then click on "Games, Software, and More." From there, under the "Software and Services" side of the list, click "See all >" and on the next page there should be a facebook app. This app allows you to check friends status', update your own, check your messages, reply, and, as an added bonus, if any of your friends have their Phone number on FB, you can access it through the tab and call them directly from the app, through your phone.
Downfall: No Chat app. You are not allowed to do direct Facebook Chatting, you can send and receive messages, but no chatting.
Option #2
Palringo - Here is an app that I've been using for a long time. Bottom line, it's a multi service chatting program. You do have to sign up for an account (completely free), but after that, you can access any account of yours on the following networks:
* Windows Live Messenger ® (MSN)
* AOL ® Instant Messenger (AIM)
* Yahoo! ® Messenger
* Google Talk ™
* ICQ ®
* Jabber ®
* iChat® / MobileMe ®
* Gadu-Gadu ®
* Facebook Chat (Alpha)
With this program, you can chat directly with your friends on facebook.
Downfall: Chatting is the only thing you can do with facebook and this app.
I do hope this helps...

My problem was the same, I was using the intergraded Facebook, crashed everytime I update in the address book editing screen. As soon as I took one of my contacts off of the link with facebook it started to work... But then everytime I open up File Explorer it would hang on loading "The last folder I tried to view was My Device\Windows". Couldn't even change which folder I was viewing, so with much frustration I turned to Hardware reset.
I deleted the "FacebookInfo" file in My Device folder, and it started working again.

Facebook opens mobile site instead of touch

I had this issue on my myTouch as well but when I get an email from facebook saying someone has commented on a post I made or something similar and I click it I get sent to the ugly mobile site and it just loads the live feed not the actual post. I just wanted to know if there was any fix for this or if it could load the touch site instead (or even better the app) so I don't have to wait to go to my desktop or look though posts in the app since the notifications don't work on the Nexus One yet.
Yeah mine does it sporadically. I haven't used it for a couple of days but maybe it has to be in the current processes list/ list of current applications for it to recognise it, else it opens the browser. Just a suggestion.
The whole notification thing really irritates me. You'd think since it comes with the phone, they would at least check that it works ¬¬
Well the web address sent to you in your email is from facebook.com and it is a http link to the full web site, facebook doesn't know that you're viewing this from your phone. gmail/email on the phone is going to treat these links the same, there's nothing built into the formatting or platform to make these 'special'.
I would recommend you disable email notifications on facebook, and configure notifications within the facebook app. This should get you the behavior you desire.
Ok so since i've fixed my facebook notification issue I actually hate the facebook app. Seriously, what app shows a notification which you have to open via an external link? I thought that was the point of the app? The facebook mobile website is atrocious, and i'd actually prefer to open it in web view rather than mobile view, since that's the point of a smartphone.
I hate to bring it up but even the iPhone did a better job. Almost everything could be done through the app. Almost.
that aint the phones fault its the app developers lol

To anyone having some problems, the best workaround I can find is using Dolphin Browser and changing the User Agent to iPhone. This will automatically pull up touch.facebook.com

Anyone else prefer the Gmail mobile web app?

I really hope that Google starts improving the Gmail app on Android soon as it feels pretty lackluster compared with the mobile Gmail web app. I just find that everything looks and feels nicer on the web version than the native app.
A couple things I like better about the HTML version:
- Colour scheme is much nicer. The app is very bland.
- Copy and Paste is possible.
- When replying, quoted text is editable.
- If you have Gmail checking a POP account for you, replying to those emails sends from the correct account.
I'm still using the full app though as it loads faster (once loaded it doesn't seem a whole lot faster though), provides notifications and is the only way you can add attachments. I hope the Gmail team starts improving the native app at a similar pace to the web version.
a couple apps that may help you with your gmail app, even though you didn't mention these as an issue:
blackmoon attachsave - lets you save attachments to the sd card, not just view them
file sender - lets you attach any file to send
i absolutely agree with you.. gmail app needs to be improved..
another lack i'd like to say is that for older messages you can only read the day it was sent without the time!
But I have heard that this is the best gmail application on any platform. I'm not an email heavy person but it works fine for what I need to do and never had to say, "I wish I could do this" or, "I wish this was better."
I think Google has put all app improvements/updates on hold for now, such as the Gmail app and the obvious Music app.
Most likely they are waiting for FroYo, which is rumored to separate the Google Apps from Android's framework. Then they can update the app whenever they feel like without a new Android version (like they have done with Google Maps) and anyone on any Android version can download/update the app as they please.
I can't wait for FroYo. Along with full Flash 10.1 and rumors of all these new features, it's sure to be a major game changer.

Facebook Push Notification for Leo

I've been using blackberry for a while and the facebook application on it is perfect. Now after switching to Leo, I've noticed that the FB app on that one is weak.. I just would like to know if there is a better app out there. The most important function I'm after is the push notification; I would like to get a notification on my phone(either on Home or maybe a specific tab), each time I get a notification on FB. I came across Babbler for Android, I believe what I'm looking for is something like that...
Thanks in advance for the help

The site (especially http://touch.facebook.com ) is not bad but the option I'm missing from blackberry is the push notification. The only I managed to get notifications now is via email
you can get texts from facebook whenever you get messages or posts or whatever. unless your trying to not use texts of course it wont help

I'm familiar with this option; however, I'm looking for a more "integrated" application (with the OS I mean) such as the one for Blackberry.. I really hope people at Facebook or Microsoft will develop something similar..
That's the ONLY reason I'm hanging onto my blackberry. WinMo's FB app SUCKS. I was just trying this morning different apps which claim they can sync up. So far I haven't found anything that remotely compares to BB's interface. *sigh*
Try this: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-fim-facebook-instant-messenger.html
It has a mode that integrates with the web, and seems to cache your credentials so that you don't have to manually log on. It does have some ads but it's free.
Oh, and of course it lets you do FB IM messages.

Facebook Apps!
If you do some forum thread searching you will find a couple of interesting items regarding this issue...
1) There is a thread from the writers of the Microsoft Facebook APP, who ARE aware of the limitations of the standard app, and are working on an improved version for WM!
2) There is also a team of equally pi$$ed off WM users who want a decent FB app, that have start writing their own! At present they are assembling a coding team, but SAMPLE images are available and they are making mighty efforts to accomplish what we all want!

Interesting glitch I encountered

So over the past couple days my phone became ridiculously painful to use. Opening text message conversations would require almost a minute or more to load, browsing the internet was jarring, and just everything would hang and cause me to wait before I could use it. This wasn't the experience I was used to and it just started all of a sudden.
I checked to see if maybe I downloaded some app that would cause the issues, but I hadn't downloaded anything recently except for regular updates. Then I checked to see if any app I wasn't used to seeing was running in the background. No dice (although I did notice the sync icon frequently in my status bar, something that didn't click at the time). Thus I began assuming it was the ROM I was running. I figured I should wipe /data and /system and flash a new ROM. However, I decided to check my storage space and looked through my apps. This is where it got weird:
Contacts Storage was taking up 2.2 gigs of storage...
At the time, I didn't consider that to be a potential cause of my issues, but rather a ridiculous bug that I fell victim to. So I deleted the data freeing up a bunch of storage space and decided to turn off Facebook contact sync (guessing that may have contributed to it). Now Contacts Storage takes up 20.54mb, a much more reasonable amount of space.
Since deleting all of that data, my phone has been back to normal performance. Opening up text messages is near instant, scrolling in the browser doesn't get stuck, etc, etc, etc. I can understand why deleting that data would help the messages, but I'm not sure why it would affect the performance of the entire phone. Wondering if it was constantly syncing stuff in the background hurting the performance throughout the phone.
Has anyone else encountered this or know why it would cause any of the issues I described? Granted, I just did this a couple hours ago so things might change, but everything seems good for now.
It's just probably CPU processes taking up the speed you need for whatever you're doing. FB sync is notorious for this, that's why I use Picture Contact Sync and manually sync my contacts. FB app should just be hung and shot and whoever at FB who made it fired.

Yeah I have HaxSync for syncing contact pictures now which is all I need. What the hell was Facebook syncing though to take up 2gigs? I tried looking into this online and I found a few people reporting sizes of 300mb, but nothing over a gig. I have no idea how mine got so high.
delete Facebook and never use it again.. the mobile web version is better
