I've been using blackberry for a while and the facebook application on it is perfect. Now after switching to Leo, I've noticed that the FB app on that one is weak.. I just would like to know if there is a better app out there. The most important function I'm after is the push notification; I would like to get a notification on my phone(either on Home or maybe a specific tab), each time I get a notification on FB. I came across Babbler for Android, I believe what I'm looking for is something like that...
Thanks in advance for the help

The site (especially http://touch.facebook.com ) is not bad but the option I'm missing from blackberry is the push notification. The only I managed to get notifications now is via email
you can get texts from facebook whenever you get messages or posts or whatever. unless your trying to not use texts of course it wont help

I'm familiar with this option; however, I'm looking for a more "integrated" application (with the OS I mean) such as the one for Blackberry.. I really hope people at Facebook or Microsoft will develop something similar..
That's the ONLY reason I'm hanging onto my blackberry. WinMo's FB app SUCKS. I was just trying this morning different apps which claim they can sync up. So far I haven't found anything that remotely compares to BB's interface. *sigh*
Try this: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-fim-facebook-instant-messenger.html
It has a mode that integrates with the web, and seems to cache your credentials so that you don't have to manually log on. It does have some ads but it's free.
Oh, and of course it lets you do FB IM messages.

Facebook Apps!
If you do some forum thread searching you will find a couple of interesting items regarding this issue...
1) There is a thread from the writers of the Microsoft Facebook APP, who ARE aware of the limitations of the standard app, and are working on an improved version for WM!
2) There is also a team of equally pi$$ed off WM users who want a decent FB app, that have start writing their own! At present they are assembling a coding team, but SAMPLE images are available and they are making mighty efforts to accomplish what we all want!

I had this issue on my myTouch as well but when I get an email from facebook saying someone has commented on a post I made or something similar and I click it I get sent to the ugly mobile site and it just loads the live feed not the actual post. I just wanted to know if there was any fix for this or if it could load the touch site instead (or even better the app) so I don't have to wait to go to my desktop or look though posts in the app since the notifications don't work on the Nexus One yet.
Yeah mine does it sporadically. I haven't used it for a couple of days but maybe it has to be in the current processes list/ list of current applications for it to recognise it, else it opens the browser. Just a suggestion.
The whole notification thing really irritates me. You'd think since it comes with the phone, they would at least check that it works ¬¬
Well the web address sent to you in your email is from facebook.com and it is a http link to the full web site, facebook doesn't know that you're viewing this from your phone. gmail/email on the phone is going to treat these links the same, there's nothing built into the formatting or platform to make these 'special'.
I would recommend you disable email notifications on facebook, and configure notifications within the facebook app. This should get you the behavior you desire.
Ok so since i've fixed my facebook notification issue I actually hate the facebook app. Seriously, what app shows a notification which you have to open via an external link? I thought that was the point of the app? The facebook mobile website is atrocious, and i'd actually prefer to open it in web view rather than mobile view, since that's the point of a smartphone.
I hate to bring it up but even the iPhone did a better job. Almost everything could be done through the app. Almost.
that aint the phones fault its the app developers lol

To anyone having some problems, the best workaround I can find is using Dolphin Browser and changing the User Agent to iPhone. This will automatically pull up touch.facebook.com
i cant believe thatit doesn't auto update an add a little notice anywhere is it just me or is this £495 phone not pulling its weight, starting to think about selling this and getting an iPhone or going back to my 8900 have I set everything up correctly? why use is it if it doesn't notify you of anything
sigh......
It might just be me but that seems to be quite a vague statement...what doesn't it update that's upsetting you? I found this:
http://www.montecristoff.com/hd2tweak.htm
earlier today and its got a nice feature which will automatically update any apps that you've installed...how cool is that? (I do hate calling progs "apps"...its so apple dont you think?)
Wel on some hand I can agree .. But did you know you can tusrm notifications on and off, quite easy actually.
In sence env go to SETTINGS > Display Notifications sounds.
And there you should find it.
And sorry for the name of the menu. I got the dutch version over here.
And please explain more about the auto update. What exactly is it that you want to "autoupdate"

Martyn,
Can you come back with a more concise statement of what your problems are please? If its what I think it is there are tons of threads on here about that AND solutions which you can easily search for.
However let's start at the beginning and get our heads round what your problems are.
Cheers

i just want things like facebook and twitter to update automaticly without me having to get an email first...
on my bb 8900 i would have an icon at the top stating facebook 1,2,3 etc
this phone seems to only notify me of sms, email? no app like facebook or twitter interaction at all??? and my facebook is ment to update every 2 hours, (cant seem to change this )
Your signature bemoans the price the HD2 cost you - but you dislike it because it's default settings limit data connection use, persumably to cut costs?
To your issue, I don't know what facebook app was running on your blackberry but if it's that important to you why not add an rss feed with your facebook updates or open a gmail account that's mailed whenever something happens on facebook and setting it as an exchange "push mail" account?
And that's before the obvious suggestion of googling for an appropriate application O_O
I hope I'm not too reproachful. My point is that Windows Mobile is more like a desktop os than it is like whatever blackberry uses or osX mobile. Solving your "issues" shouldn't take more than half an hour's browsing in the HD2 Themes and Applications forum.
you don't have the twitter tab? and the intergrated facebook? not that its working in all aspects but still I like it..! The standalone facebook application works. The phone also notifies me for twitter and facebook messages..
go to settings in htc sense then choose the data option (says set up sync schdules or similar under the heading) then click on facebook or twitter and set up sync settings to automatic.
they will both now update at the intervals you set.
twitter is available in sense via it's tab and facebook inegrates itself with your contacts in the people tab in sense by pairing your contacts on your device with the contacts of matching names from your facebook. names have to be the same to auto integrate otherwise you have to manually select which contacts to add to which facebook friend.
hope this helps a bit
All the above, plus make sure you don't use any form of 'Auto-disconnect' program to turn your data connection off, or all 'pushed' updates like FB and Twitter will fail till the next time a polled update occurs.

Hi,
I found that there is a new version of Facebook ... version 1.2 (Market).
http://phandroid.com/2010/04/23/facebook-app-updates-adds-inbox-support/
And on my HTC Desire, the version is 112.
Anyone has updated this?
There are 2 facebook apps on my Desire:
- facebook (version 112)
- Facebook for HTC Sense (version 1)
How do you update?
Thanks
i only did the usual way to upgrade,
market -> download, and click on the application, and update.
Any feedback about the version? I see quite a few complaints about force closes on other handsets, how is it in the Desire?
Works just fine on the Desire. My biggest problem is you can't view your messages you have to manually go to the mobile site...oh wait what's this update...messaging feature finally! Now they need to add chat.
yep just updated today.. finally INBOX , otherwise not really seen anything different.
They need to get up to date with this android Facebook app. I did the update today hoping for the notifications to finally work properly, as in notifying me if someone comments on one of my posts! but alas, still no cigar, infact it never seems to notify me of anything. Is it just me?

I get updates but only if I add people with facebook to my Friends Widget..... then it adds a green circle with the number of updates by a friend.
the main app works fine, but the widget doesn't. fails to load each time.
edit: confirm that a reboot does indeed fix the problem.
A reboot of the Desire solved the issue with the widget for me
I've started using Bloo again lately. Much better notifications system, slicker and more comprehensive UI (has its own photo viewer with save option rather than just linking to the mobile site for example) AND there's an update coming this week that adds Facebook Chat.
Bloo doesn't let me log in i get stuck in a login cycle.
There is also multitouch when you view images.
Have you given the App permissions? Works fine on my Desire running generic Rom. Not bothered about multitouch; the only reason the native Facebook app has it is because it opens up the browser and that's CHEATING ;-) the gallery UI is much more slick and user friendly with Bloo, besides which there's little point viewing photos en masse with either of these apps as the standard photo gallery has Facebook album integration which is pretty damn slick
they have added the inbox but still it has few bugs. It cannot show more than 30 threaded messages in a single conversation. Even when someone sends a new message in that same conversation, you can see the preview on the inbox but when you click to go on reading it loads first 30 messages.
So im still stuck with the mobile facebook to see my messages. ..
anyone know the workaround of this?
I just want an update that lets me tag photos! I don't understand why this is taking so long
The update for Bloo has been coming for a few months. However, I can send you 1.5 (w/ chat) a bit later? PM if you want.
Also, I can't see the new update. I'm already on 1.2 :s Does the new version allow contact sync like the Nexus FroYo version?
Edit: New version sounds like the version I've had for some time now :s

Ok, so I posted this question up in General but got mocked and no help, so maybe I can try and get somewhere with the devs here.
I love the fact that the ability to login and sync your facebook twitter & myspace is stock on the Epic, problem is, while I can log in to facebook, & twitter......MySpace tells me "Login Failed. Try Again" every time. I've tried to look up the problem, but it seems like this is an anomaly (sp?). Anyone have any clues? I do still use myspace and handle business (I'm a DJ). Before anyone asks, yes the login information is correct, and I can log in via the website itself, and the myspace app. I don't want to use the app though, and I do want to have all my different networks in one place like it's supposed to be so any help would be greatly appreciated.
What's so great about the phone that comes with this phone? I tried using it and it gave me problems too. Just settle for something else, who knows it might be better .
Sent while your mom was putting her clothes back on (Epic4G gotta love it.)
Well what's so great about it is A) It's a feature on my phone that I'd like to have work & B) I'd like to sync my MySpace just as I sync my Facebook & Twitter. I actually do use Touchwiz, and the Friends widget on there so since that updates all at once and gives me my updates all on the same widget I would like to get that working. Now if there's a widget that will show you your Facebook, MySpace, & Twitter updates and let you update them all in one spot I'm open to suggestions.
Who still uses Myspace...that's prolly why you can't log in cause that ish is abandoned lol...

Come on man he just said he got that ich on the last thread he was looking for help on
Thread moved to General.
so since apple released whatever 'iMessage' for all apple products and its exclusive and what not, and all blackberry devices have BBM, how much do you gander android will release its own form of IM within the coming months before the release of icecream sandwich?
revamp of G-Talk... maybe? LOL that thing seriously need a big overhaul anyway.
a penny for your thoughts?
I personally like the idea of GTalk how it is now. They could just make sure its installed on every phone and maybe even put it on the first screen.
I like having it cross-platform and even available on the desktop.
Most of my friends have Android now, so more and more people are moving to GTalk.
I wish they would come out with a better desktop client though that'll do video rather than relying on the web one.
I think GTalk should be a feature they advertise more. Its already available on every Android phone, uses push for 2.2+ and works really well.
It would be cool
I would like to see google sync google talk across devices. Not sure if it could kill off SMS like everyone thinks though.

The nice thing is that it uses Jabber, so there's lots of clients out there that will support it...all with their own feature sets. So its easily cross-platform, just not always the official app.
I think iMessage is going to be hugely popular as it looks like it's built right into the normal SMS messaging application in iOS and is going to be automaticly used any time you are sending a message to another iPhone user. Once people get used to using the combined messaging app, it's going to be nearly impossible to convince iPhone users to install a 3rd party chat app.
I now think it makes sense for RIM to open up BBM to other platforms, as they have the best chance of getting people to install their app, and if they are going to lose customers to iPhones and Androids (which is clearly happening), it would be in their best interest to at least keep them as BBM users.
Frankly, Google really dropped the ball by not seeing what a big problem all of these propietary chatting protocols are going to be for alternative mobile platforms. Many people in places like Canada (where blackberry and BBM are very popular) fear switching from blackberry as it means giving up all of your BBM contacts, and it's going to be the same thing for iPhone users soon. We needed an open spec protocol like XMPP to be the dominant protocol so that anyone can make a client for any device, but there are parts of Google Talk that just don't meet what people are looking for.
Google Talk needs at least the following, in my opinion:
- Remove the ability to log out
- Delivery (and maybe read) status for messages
- Improved group chat (currently the implementation is clumsy and inconsistent)
- Improved media transfers (photos and videos, but also contacts and locations)
- Combine SMS and Google Talk applications into one messaging super app, like iMessage.
The biggest problem with Google talk is its currently not widely available on every android phone.
Google doesn't need to revamp gtalk. It just needs to make Disco the default messaging program like Apple has done with iMessage. It would need to add MMS and remove the requirement for creating groups before sending messages but I can't imaging either would be too difficult to do before ICS is released.
http://techcrunch.com/2011/05/23/google-disco-2/
Been wishing this was in gtalk since 1.6. I dont think they need to combine it with the SMS app if they keep the green circle next the contacts name when they are signed on in Gtalk.
If they updated the BB and IOS apps to work with the new Gtalk apps it could dominate. But like google maps with navigation, they reserve group chats and video chatting to the web client and android users.

+1, I totally agree with you.
It really has to be promoted. I have a lot of friends with Android devices whom doesn't even know that Gtalk exists, it's a real pain. It needs the option to login with a kind of a "PIN" maybe just like RIM has.

For it to work, any message system has to integrate with the default messaging app. Otherwise, it will be a failure. Apple did get iMessage right by integrating it with the sms app and make using it automatic (without any user input to setup).
^wait, so how does the phone know if the receiver is an iOS user and that the receiver has an internet connection? For iPads, there are no phone numbers associated with the devices. So how does iMessage integrate with the SMS app?
Currently you can see if the person is on gtalk in the SMS app by a green dot next to their name. That seems perfectly fine by me.

Actually, even iPad 3G users have a phone number (it just isn't visible to the user). My guess is it will do contact matching (which will check the contact's email against itunes accounts and the phone number). The phone number will probably be automatically registered to your account when you login to your phone with your itunes account. So it isn't hard to do that simple matching.
