HTC "Ext" part of ExtUSB redundant? - Touch HD General

Right, so we all by now know that the ExtUSB connector on the Touch HD does not support audio or video-out. The question I have, therefore, is what's the point of the connector being ExtUSB at all? Apart from data and power, both of which can be done via a standard USB cable and therefore do not need the ExtUSB interface, is there anything else that can be ported through the extra "Ext" pins?
This is not so much a problem, per se, as a general curiosity!

I realy don't mind so much the lack of video on the ext-usb port, but it would have been nice to have audio on that connector so it would provide audio from a docking station/cradle.
I guess we will never know why HTC decided to skip this on their flaghip.

Yeah I agree I don't really have any use for the video output, and I agree that audio-out through the ExtUSB would have been handy for car cradles, I'm merely curious if there's any other additional features of ExtUSB that are still enabled on the HD as it seems to me that the connector is simply a standard mini USB with a couple of extra unconnected pins...

TVOut in registry

Hi boys.
I found a ky in hclm/software/HTC called: TvOut = disable.
Xperia doesn't have TvOut...or yes??
Can be the same of Trinity and gps....
Anyone that have a right cable can try it?
Bye!
I don't think this is gonna work on the xperia, of course this just an assumption. I believe its HTC's proprioritary ext usb connector that allows for video out. Thats just a guess though...
Nobody have a tv out cable that can try that out?
Really want someone to try this

I do have the Raphael cable but it doesnt fit
Greets !
A four pole 3.5mm jack into the headphone socket should work. As discussed in another thread, the proprietary usb socket on the HTC only has 4 extra poles, and they carry the audio/tv out.
I had a TP for a short while, but never got to test the TV out feature (they didn't supply the cable), so I don't know if any additional software is needed for it to function... It might be that we have to install some software as well as edit the reg key, or it might just be the reg key, I don't know.
If I can find a 4 pole 3.5mm jack and some phono connectors I might get round to trying it, the 4 pole 3.5mm jack is a longshot though.

Yea htc uses that ext usb that they created. Mini usb fits in their jack but their jack doesn't fit in mini usb.

On another thread about it, there was the notion that xperia can't have TV-out because they didn't wire it to a port.
TV-out is present in the Qualcomm chip, they just didn't bother to implement it. TV-out on the USB port is out of the question because there aren't enough pins for it. TV-out from the audio jack seems a no-go too, my hopes were for a 4 ring 3.5mm jack but that is already taken for the wired handsfree.

But other devices use the audio/hands feree socket with no problem, they just appear to change the circuit when TV Out is running. The HTC uses the same pins for TV out as it does for audio, it's just a usb connector with 4 extra pins on the other side of the USB pins. Those 4 pins are the ones that carry the audio/hands free *and* the TV Out, just never at the same time.

That's an interesting suggestion. If that's the case then it could work for xperia too if SE bothered to connect the signal to the 4th ring.
As i wrote in another thread discussing this matter, i couldn't get the HTC Video Out application to run on my Xperia.
Hopefully someone here can get it to work. Maybe there's some changes has to be made before it work? (screen resolution maybe?)

I'm almost positive it's not a case of "bothering" as much as HTC wanting the Touch Pro to have its USP (unique selling point) over the Xperia. Otherwise, the Touch Pro has nothing over the X1, which would cut into its sales.
Just a thought
The Nokia N95 has got tv-out through the 3,5mm plug. The extra ring can be used for headsets aswell, so although it is possible that xperia works the same way it'snt probable since SE says there is no tv-out.
Anyone with a n95 tv-out cable?
i have a n95 8gb tv out cable which i think is the same as n95 ones, anyone teaching me how to do it i can try out for u guys =)
some point i agree if x1 is continue to brought over with touch pro software features, x1 will out sell touch pro... althought im quiet happy about it but i think htc will not... proabably htc wont help se to oem wm devices anymore
Any development in this field yet?
why is tv out not included with the x1 then>
don't think so...

Possible TV Out cable

Anybody know if this might work?
http://www.jetmall.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=304
I don't think so -- the connector on the PDA end looks like a 4-pin microUSB, not the 11-pin ExtUSB that HTC uses.
It's apparently a proprietary connector, as you can see here.
It doesn't match the pins for the HTC ExtUSB connector.

The connector is smaller dude...
anyway, I was wondering if this one may work. Although it doesn't have Audio output, but I think it would work for the video. on top of that it's only $3.53 shipped
Unless I'm mistaken, the white plug would be mono audio. However, I still do not think it would work. Best bet would be to go with the ones for approximately $20.
Cant believe its mono: the cable has 3 Cinch-cables: red and white as usuall for left & right audio channel, yellow for video signal.. as far as i know.. but im sure it wont work with tp

USB Port for Sound and Answer/End Call?

Hiya,
You'll all probably know that on the TouchPro, the HTC mini-USB jack allows headphones to be connected (via adaptor), as well as a 'remote' which answers/ends calls...
...which is excellent, because I was able to develop my own wired connection to my CK-7W car kit.
I would like to do the same for my SEX1, particularly given the unreliable nature of the bluetooth.
Q: Is the mini-USB port configurable to give audio-out, and potentially answer/end calls?
Kind regards,
Oms.

It should be, you can get usb headphones, with a talkbutton, that use a standard mini usb fitting.
the audio for the X1 goes to the 3.5mm jack? There is an answer button on the supplied cable.
I thought the USB port was only for USB and power - am I wrong?
I'm not sure most HTC phone have audio out by USB and Mobile fun has
HTC Multifunction Audio Cable YC A200
HTC TyTN/MDA Vario II 3-in-1 USB Adapter
HTC Multifunction Audio Cable YC A300
in the X1 area,
but can't find anything on the net saying it will work
I really want it to work so i only need to plug one cable in when its in the car phone and audio.
I would love to know if some one has tried them.
I'll let you knoe if i get one
I tried it with my Moto L7 USB headset. Nothing happens.
Sorry
I wish it would work too...
htc devices use the extUSB connector and use the extre pins not in normal miniUSB for these features
pins the normal miniUSB connecter the x1 uses don't have so it can't be don
x1 don't support usbHost so the miniUSb connector only have 2 functions
being connected to an usbHost like a computer
and charging no other functionality is possible for a device which
don't support usbHost
Hi Oms,
I've just came across your post about the wired connection you made from Touch Pro to ck-7w. I would like to make a similar setup for my Touch Diamond2. Could you please post your findings on this matter and connections details?

help with a tweak

Hi. So I have the hands free from my former diamond 2. Now..is there any way that I can make the usb headset compatible with my Hd?

Not exactly sure what you're asking, but I do know that regular mini USB cables work on the HD even though the HD doesn't exactly have a mini USB port (it has an extUSB port).
extUSB == miniUSB + audio
one can get converters from extUSB to 3.5mm
and I suppose one could make 3.5mm to extUSB too never seen any though
but one can't make extUSB -> miniUSB when it comes to audio as miniUSB is a serial digital interface which don't carry any type of audio
one can use a miniUSB cable to charge and datatransfer in a extUSB as the usb pins are the same

HTC Charger?

I just received an HTC Charger that I ordered from "Android Central" and the part that connects to the PHONE is not the same as the original that came with my HTC Hero... I am just wondering if it makes a difference or not...
The HTC Charger from Android Central works perfectly fine, I am just wondering why its different from my original that came in the HTC Hero box.
It may just be a standard mini USB. They work just fine, but they don't have the "HTC rounded end"
and in order for it to charge as fast as the stock charger it needs to be 1000MaH..or (1amp)
The mini-USB will work fine but may feel a little looser than the HTC version.
I have always wondered what HTC was thinking when they designed this? They sell a plug that won't go into anything else but an HTC phone and yet any mini-USB will fit into the phone's input.
I'm not complaining but it seems like if they wanted to go out of their way to have a proprietary interface (like Sony-Ericsson) they would have made it, well... more "proprietary".

Yeah, I really don't understand why they put the slanty-bit at the right instead of just making it stansard mini USB. They have been switching to micro USB for their new phones (i.e. Nexus One, Desire, HD2)

There's one big, distinct advantage of their special connector: extra pins.
These extra pins are used for audio (and sometimes video) output. This is critical for people like me, as I only have to plug in one connector in my car to both charge the phone and get audio into the stereo. You can't do that with mini-USB.
Mini-USB connectors should not be any looser than the HTC one.

True. My car has a radio w/ an auxiliary input, so I use a mini USB charger and plug the aux into the audio jack to navigate.
