today, for the second time since the ownership of this phone, my phone has been hard reset.
they battery was fully charged last night, and i had a couple of apps installed on the PPC. but the last time this happened, there were no apps installed on the phone, and it just randomly hard reset, and i lost EVERYTHING on my phone.
any ideas?
also, how do i get back my partnership from Activesync so that it recognises the device? i lost the partnership when the device was hard reset today.
also (last thing) if i do synchronise with activesynce, will i get all my data back on the phone, or will all the data on my computer be erased, and make me hopeless?
thanking you in advance for any replies.

p.s.: it's a himalaya
i just do a restore (yes some people do make backups), and then i have my partnership back.
If this isn't an option try
1) setting your regional settings like before (don't know if this is necessary but read it somewhere in this forum)
2) in the registry of your XDAII set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Ident/Name to what it was = name of directory on your PC under "Document and Settings/username/Application Data/Microsoft/Activesync/profiles/" (at least that's were it is on my Win2000
About the hard resets : I have no idea
what about the data though?
when i synchronise with activesync, and i have data remaining on the computer from my previous partnership, will i lose the data on the computer?
/me goes and tries it.
how do i access the registy on my PPC?
with phm regedit, it's freeware at i thik it's floating somewhere here on the forum :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=7136
with a new partnership, he will take data from xda to PC.
For syncing with outlook, i think he asks what to do copy them pc => xda; xda => pc ; or keep duplicates.
well, the only problem with that would be that when installing the registry program, i would also lose all my data, wouldn't i?
you can always connect as Guest & it won't do any syncing.
and then copy the cab file in the zip to somewhere on your xdaII & run it. That would install regedit on your xdaII.
Then Change the Name and reconnect to your PC.
the name of the device is already the same as that i had previously (Pocket_PC), but it still won't let me sync with my previous profile
I backup everyday using Sprite....its very fast
Since then I got no worries abt Hard Resets...ever.
You can store the backup files in your SD card or even your desktop.
If you keep files in the desktop, please
uncheck the 'Establish Partnership during backup or restore'
Its worth getting Sprite.
it is not the matter of worrying about the hard resets, it's just that i find them really annoying.
speaking of which, my phone hard reset AGAIN (strike 3) yesterday while i was walking up the stairs with the phone in my hand.
weird, or what?
all things active sync accountwise is located in
documents & settings\application data\ms\activesync\
and
documents & settings\my documents\my pocketpc ducoments
and no when you sync with outlook the contacts and appointments are added to outlook ms would have an angry mob on their door steps if
messing around with pda's would clear peoples outlook account
if you worry you can export outlook to a pst file
as a backup
if you remove the device from the application data place
or backup up you can use the same sync name as you did before thats where it gets it from
in the last three days, my phone hard reset on me twice.
these are becoming ever so frequent, and pissing me off now, because i don't who is calling me unless i get to a computer to restore all my data.
could it be possible that the battery is loose?

I'm surprised you haven't thrown it up the wall I guess it could be some sort of loose connection, but perhaps it would be better to take it back to the supplier (if it is still under warranty).
yes, i think it was a loose connection, because i just got frustrated and tried putting a piece of folded up paper on top of the battery, and hasn't hard reset since.
i think this is a common problem among us XDA 2 users and it is a MUST to use Sprite Backup... it is fast and has a smaller compression so the backup file is not that big to store in the mmc... just dont forget to install it in the storage card.. Sprite backup = no need for PC to restore files..
I had no problem with hard resets until I upgraded the rom to 1.72. Now my O2 XDA II hard resets randomly too. Once a month at least. I used the backed up software built-in to restore and use PHM RegEdit to restore my registry as well.
What's annoying is my Speed Dial resets even when I backed it up and other things went back to my previous backup. I'm going back to 1.60 or 1.66, good thing I still have the ROM backed up.
I have the same problem with my qtek2020, since rom version 1.72.00WWE.
My ppc has also an other problem, It looses the network after about 2 hours, after that i am not able to call, so i do an soft reset and the problem is over.
I believe that your xda has many application - and there is a conflict caused this Hardresets.
Solution is remove some of them - and it will be ok.
zhingis, no device should hard reset due to a conflict, with a polite O/S it would close one, more likely a lock up or soft reset but it shouldn't hard. The no. of applications won't have a bearing in any case unless they are open.
Has anyone tried regressing bootloader V to resolve?
I know that Pocket Plus from SPB has an issue with the XDA2 where it will cause it to hard reset if you have an SD card in, that's documented on their website.
Are you using SPB Plus? In anycase, use Sprite backup to your SD card, and within a matter of minutes you can have you're phone back the way it was.

yes thats happen with me , i think you upgrade to WIN2003SE , go back to WIN2003 , then you'll not face this problem again
I got my phone from UK. O2 XDA Mini S which I am guessing it is the same as the wizard.
I have had a few problems with this phone. Recently my phone will quit letting me make calls. I normally have to turn it off, remove the battery, reinstall the battery, turn it on, wait and then use the phone. Then after a while, I cannot make any calls. I have not updated the software. Don't have the USB cable. Any suggestions what I can do to fix the problem. Is it a setting issue or a phone issue?
Sounds like a rom problem, but as you havent got the lead to reprogram it you only have a few options. If i was you i would use PIM Backup to backup your contacts and sms etc to your storage card and then copy any other files you have on the device over to the storage card then try a hard reset. go into settings and click clear storage type 1234 and click yes and your phone will wipe everything except for the windows.
See if that helps but be AWARE THIS WILL WIPE EVERYTHING FROM YOUR PHONE, so it is very important to use PIMBackup to save all your contacts etc to your smartcard.
Here is a link to to pim backup
http://rapidshare.com/files/85563377/ppcpimbackup_v2.8.rar
unrar it and copy the files to your smartcard then use file explorer to open it
Thank for the help. I will try that out today.
Are you a man u fan?
Thanks martin,
Seems to be working a little better now. Hope I don't have to do it again anytime soon? Will I need a new software update at some point?
Getting a usb cable soon.
Spoke too soon. The phone looses the network after several hours and I can't use the phone to call. What do I do?
This is frustrating.
Has it been dropped? It might have loosened some on the SIM card contacts with the mobo, thats what happened to mine, and I can sometimes make a call, otherwise it won't recognize my SIM

I don't think so. So far I have reset all the default settings. It will work for a while and then I cannot make any calls. I either reset it (by pushing the button on the side) or remove the battery and sim card. It will work for a while and then quit working again. Do I need a new software? I get the USB cable in the mail any day now.
Or else I just need to get a new phone.

I know that mine is internal from drops, it just may be ROM related, try flashing a new one when you can and see what happens.
Hi,
I have been charging my HD via cable (plug charger is broken) on my mac laptop with no problems. Now i have been trying to charge it from my computer at work and everytime I plug it in the whole phone just hangs and nothing works, I can't even switch it off!! I have to take the battery out of the back of the phone.
I have tried this on both a Windows XP Proffesional and Windows 2000 pc and on both they have crashed. I have had this happen when activesync is both active and when I have turned it off on the phone. Is this happening because I have not installed activesync from the disc onto this pc? If this is the case that sucks as I thought you could just plug this phone into any pc and charge it?
Is it worth doing a hard reset?
When you connect to your PC via USB cable, besides the charging, it also try to establish connection one of which is to make your storage card a disk drive. This process will always result in the hanging and crashing and it is normal.
To avoid this, use the normal AC charger for charging, and USB cable for making connection, during which time it is assumed that you will be controlling the coyping or sync process via the PC hence the device should not be working at the same time. Not sure if this makes sense to you.
It is a way to protect the storage card from being corrupted. Only one guy should do the writing of files at a time.
Yes... Steve above is quite correct.
When selecting the phone as a storage device this locks the device and allows the phones SD Mini card to act as a removable hard drive.
If it didn't lock it down the card would get screwed up if doing anything other than operating as a storage medium.

DOH!! Ok I feel stupid now Was worrying there for a bit. Problem solved, I had the default option of it using the phone as a disk drive when plugged in, I have now set it to Activesync and also I chose Activesync when I connected it and touch wood all is fine, no freezing!!
Many thanks guys its much appreciated.
No problem Mate.... We are all entitled to a bit of 'DOHH' every now and then.
Ok so I now can charge my phone using the pc and the phone doesn't freeze. But I have just linked up the phone in Disk Drive mode as I had something I needed to transfer. The transfer went well but when I unplug the phone (and I have done the safely remove hardware thing) the phone is frozen and I have to yank the battery?? Surely this isn't right?
No... that's not right.
Is this with Vista?
I have found when using my Vista laptop my phone 'occasionally' hangs and I have to switch it off and restart but using Win XP on my other laptop it's fine.

No, it's not right, it's a bug. I'm amazed to read what you've been told so far - I mean just analyze this:

I mean honestly. How can that possibly be normal or correct behaviour?
I don't know if this is a Windows Mobile bug, or an HD bug, or a possibly a problem SD card you've got in the slot - but there is no way that any process should result in "hanging and crashing" without something being quite wrong somewhere.
You should be able to charge from any USB socket without having to worry about any of this, the advice about only using the AC adaptor etc is complete nonsense.
I am no computer jockey by any means - but I have noticed that my computer (running XP) tries to connect to my phone, as an external device and not as a phone using activesync, if I have windows media player running. With WMP (11) off, it uses activesync as normal - might this be causing this issue?

I don't think Steve meant it crashes the device and is normal.....
I think what he meant was when the device is connected as a disk drive it locks out the device (as if it's crashed).
It's normal for the phone not to be able to do anything other than transfer data when acting as a mass storage device.

I am using Windows 2000 on this PC so its not a Vista issue. And I did think it very weird, can understand it not wanting you to fiddle with the SD Card while you have it plugged in but it should release the phone when I safely remove hardware.
I am assuming no one else has this problem then? I might fish out an old 2gb mico sd card I have and see if it does the same thing, if it doesn't then its the SD card.
I will test this at home as well to see if its just the PC's here that are causing it. Mighty annoying as I have pulled the battery like 8 times now lol.
Yes... the only answer I can think of is it being the SD card that is not releasing itself.
Again it's normal for it to be locked out whilst it's connected but as soon as you 'pull the plug' you should be able to instantaneously use the phone again.

Tried this one?:
Start/Settings/System/Energy/
Disable charging when phone is ON and connected to PC.Works great for me!
Yeah I will try and find the 2GB card I have and see if that works.
And luckyuser I want my phone to be charged while it is connected though. Also my problem is that my phone crashes when I try and disconnect from the computer in disk mode, meaning I have to yank the battery.
Hello all, Dutman here. My g1 works flawlessly and it is rooted(JF 1.43) but I seem to have a problem. when I connect it via usb the LED lights up and it shows me it's charging,, but it doesn't ask me to mount files or the USB in general. This could be due to the fact that I am missing the little usb cover piece, the one that is like really bendable, it sort of fell off. I don't have that anymore, could that be the problem in why my G1 isn't syncing?
Try rebooting your phone, i found sometimes with JF firmware for one reason or another the mount does not work after long periods of use... probly nothing but worth a try. If you are using a Windows 2000, XP, or Vista computer, it should just work automatically so my advice would be to try it on another computer to determine if your computers the issue.

Not likely. Power cycle your G1 as suggested by crackmunky and verify that your USB host controllers are functioning correctly within Device Manager.
If you are using a USB hub, try plugging directly into the PC. I've had no end of trouble syncing windows mobiles in the past when connecting through a hub.
Trouble syncing
Okay, My G-1 is connected through the USB 2.0 cable directly to my computer and it is not recognizing it at all. I open the My Computer link, and it says that there is a Mobile phone. And it has a removable hard drive thing. But I click on the removable HD link and it tells me to insert a disc. And I click on the phone, and it is telling me there is nothing there. Please help, I would really like to sync up with my PC at home so that I can add music and tones to my phone.
OS is Windows XP SP2
G-1 is Firmware 1.1
does the phone show that there is an SD card in it?

If you look at the taskbar on the top of the G1 screen, you should see the USB icon up there on the left. Drag that taskbar down (same as you drag your Menu up) and you should see a bar that says "USB Connected". Click that bar and you will get an option to Mount your device.
I had the very same issue when I first got my G1. It took me forever to realize I could drag the top taskbar down.
When I open the SD Card cover on my phone the system unmounts the disk. I suspect that it has everything to do with your missing dust cover.

I just verified it again, went to he sd and phone storage option in settings from the home screen. opened the SD card slot cover, rotated it down (if the phone is flat face up, my cover was facing the floor) and the SD card section goes from

nope didnt happen for me... maybe my phone doesnt have that function....lol..
I bought mine retail the week of valentines day, maybe it is a different version. I'm running the stock ROM 1.1, I didn't get it OTA in a timely fashion so I forced it. Three days is fine for a spread, but "by the end of the month maybe" is stupid.
Evening all,
My phone has not been working since Sunday night, the screen and buttons are completely unresponsive. I recently put a password on the phone and when I turn it on it gets this far and I cannot enter anything to get any further.
I think a replacement handset is in order (this should be no problem) but my concern is getting a backup of the phone before I do. I've got backup software installed on it and want at the very least my contacts and recent text inbox details.
When I plug it in to the PC it tries to go to the "Disk Drive" option (I can't see this on screen but I know it is) so I can't do anything to make it use activesync.
Anybody have any ideas for me to backup the phone without being able to get into it?
(Sorry for the long-ish post)
You can try to remove your memory card thus forcing the phone to connect through ActiveSync when you plug it in.

Thanks for the reply.
Yea, I've taken the memory card out but it didn't seem to make a difference, stumped me a bit. My phone is on the "incorrect password" attempt screen now (I haven't been able to attempt entering a password) and I think I need to get past this for it to allow me the option to go into ActiveSync.
