random hard resets - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

today, for the second time since the ownership of this phone, my phone has been hard reset.
they battery was fully charged last night, and i had a couple of apps installed on the PPC. but the last time this happened, there were no apps installed on the phone, and it just randomly hard reset, and i lost EVERYTHING on my phone.
any ideas?
also, how do i get back my partnership from Activesync so that it recognises the device? i lost the partnership when the device was hard reset today.
also (last thing) if i do synchronise with activesynce, will i get all my data back on the phone, or will all the data on my computer be erased, and make me hopeless?
thanking you in advance for any replies.

desperate
p.s.: it's a himalaya

i just do a restore (yes some people do make backups), and then i have my partnership back.
If this isn't an option try
1) setting your regional settings like before (don't know if this is necessary but read it somewhere in this forum)
2) in the registry of your XDAII set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Ident/Name to what it was = name of directory on your PC under "Document and Settings/username/Application Data/Microsoft/Activesync/profiles/" (at least that's were it is on my Win2000
About the hard resets : I have no idea

what about the data though?
when i synchronise with activesync, and i have data remaining on the computer from my previous partnership, will i lose the data on the computer?
/me goes and tries it.
how do i access the registy on my PPC?

with phm regedit, it's freeware at i thik it's floating somewhere here on the forum :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=7136
with a new partnership, he will take data from xda to PC.
For syncing with outlook, i think he asks what to do copy them pc => xda; xda => pc ; or keep duplicates.

well, the only problem with that would be that when installing the registry program, i would also lose all my data, wouldn't i?

you can always connect as Guest & it won't do any syncing.
and then copy the cab file in the zip to somewhere on your xdaII & run it. That would install regedit on your xdaII.
Then Change the Name and reconnect to your PC.

the name of the device is already the same as that i had previously (Pocket_PC), but it still won't let me sync with my previous profile

I backup everyday using Sprite....its very fast
Since then I got no worries abt Hard Resets...ever.
You can store the backup files in your SD card or even your desktop.
If you keep files in the desktop, please
uncheck the 'Establish Partnership during backup or restore'
Its worth getting Sprite.

it is not the matter of worrying about the hard resets, it's just that i find them really annoying.
speaking of which, my phone hard reset AGAIN (strike 3) yesterday while i was walking up the stairs with the phone in my hand.
weird, or what?

all things active sync accountwise is located in
documents & settings\application data\ms\activesync\
and
documents & settings\my documents\my pocketpc ducoments
and no when you sync with outlook the contacts and appointments are added to outlook ms would have an angry mob on their door steps if
messing around with pda's would clear peoples outlook account
if you worry you can export outlook to a pst file
as a backup
if you remove the device from the application data place
or backup up you can use the same sync name as you did before thats where it gets it from

in the last three days, my phone hard reset on me twice.
these are becoming ever so frequent, and pissing me off now, because i don't who is calling me unless i get to a computer to restore all my data.
could it be possible that the battery is loose?

I'm surprised you haven't thrown it up the wall I guess it could be some sort of loose connection, but perhaps it would be better to take it back to the supplier (if it is still under warranty).

yes, i think it was a loose connection, because i just got frustrated and tried putting a piece of folded up paper on top of the battery, and hasn't hard reset since.

i think this is a common problem among us XDA 2 users and it is a MUST to use Sprite Backup... it is fast and has a smaller compression so the backup file is not that big to store in the mmc... just dont forget to install it in the storage card.. Sprite backup = no need for PC to restore files..

I had no problem with hard resets until I upgraded the rom to 1.72. Now my O2 XDA II hard resets randomly too. Once a month at least. I used the backed up software built-in to restore and use PHM RegEdit to restore my registry as well.
What's annoying is my Speed Dial resets even when I backed it up and other things went back to my previous backup. I'm going back to 1.60 or 1.66, good thing I still have the ROM backed up.

I have the same problem with my qtek2020, since rom version 1.72.00WWE.
My ppc has also an other problem, It looses the network after about 2 hours, after that i am not able to call, so i do an soft reset and the problem is over.

I believe that your xda has many application - and there is a conflict caused this Hardresets.
Solution is remove some of them - and it will be ok.

zhingis, no device should hard reset due to a conflict, with a polite O/S it would close one, more likely a lock up or soft reset but it shouldn't hard. The no. of applications won't have a bearing in any case unless they are open.
Has anyone tried regressing bootloader V to resolve?

I know that Pocket Plus from SPB has an issue with the XDA2 where it will cause it to hard reset if you have an SD card in, that's documented on their website.
Are you using SPB Plus? In anycase, use Sprite backup to your SD card, and within a matter of minutes you can have you're phone back the way it was.

yes thats happen with me , i think you upgrade to WIN2003SE , go back to WIN2003 , then you'll not face this problem again

Phone reset itself! Any idea why?

I have an O2 XDA2. I just took the phone out of my jacket pocket to find that it wanted me to calibrate the screen. It went on to take me through the whole set-up wizard and then I found that all my data and installed programs had been lost
I'm guessing the phone decided it wanted to reset itself!
Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened so I can avoid it happening again?
The phone had plenty of battery power (approx 80%). It had plenty of space space (approx 28MB). I hadn't recently installed any software although I did uninstall Pocket Money on the weekend. I also created an IMAP email account then but I've had no problem with the phone since then until now.
Any ideas? Thanks very much
would prob be a good idear if you stated the rom version you are using
Sorry, It's 1.60.00 WWE
I have never upgraded it as I haven't the first idea how or what the implications are.
the latest officail rom is 1.72
if you get that from their site you will not get warrenty issues
when i used 1.66 i had lockups from time to time
after i got 1.72
i havent had any issues
I don't really feel comfortable upgrading it as I haven't the first idea what to do.
How do you normally reset a device? Is it something I could have done by accident?
there is a little hole in the buttom of it in the right corner if you press that using something thin like the stylus while you press the on button
then it hardreset
but there is software which let you do it as well
the upgrade is really pretty simpel
Thanks very much. I know the reset button, I use that every now and again. There's no way I could have pressed it and the on switch by accident given tha the phone was in an otherwise empty jacket pocket.
Oh well, I guess my phone just had enough of life. I'll look into upgrading the ROM when I feel a bit more adventurous
Fabulous...My phone has again decided to reset itself out of the blue.
I have no idea why it does this but it's a pain in the rear. Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to prevent it? (other than upgrading to the Universal when it comes out!!)
And it's happened again...seems to happen approximately once a month.
Has this spontaneous hard reset issue not happened to anyone else?
I suffered this audacious curse only to find that by removing my 1gig sd card remedied the problem.
I'm wondering if the sd card draws too much power/resources or whether I have a dodgy sd card.
Either way, without it I'm flying. I pop it in when I need to use my TomTom and as it's on charge in the car cradle it doesnt matter about resource usage etc.
So, try removing your sd card and see what goes
SD cards seem to be causing all sorts of problems. I kept getting the eternal spinning timer when copy, paste or deleting files, if the card was inserted. Did a soft reset today to be met with the calibration screen as from a hard reset. Such fun isnt it.
Hi Guys
Thanks very much for your comments. Unfortunately it isn't the cause as I have had my SD slot empty for a while now (my SD card is in my new car radio/MP3 player )
I'm starting to think that after 15 months my XDA2 has decided that it's had enough of the world. My colleague told me that it's seeking revenge as it's heard me salivate over its younger sister (the Universal).
As you say having the phone hard reset itself is a whole lot of fun!
I have the Sprite Back Up programe so all is not lost - it creates an exe file on the SD card that you locate and select thus restoring everything just how it was before it was lost
one can also just have activesync do an inc backup at each sync
and if the device hardresets one can connect as guest and restore the backup from ones normal profile
The nice thing about the Sprite software is that you can restore when you're out and about unlike the active sync method which means you need your pc close by

Magician keeps reseting.

I have Qtek S110 and since yesterday it keeps reseting by itself. Usually when I try to make a call or sombody calls me. I changed the firmware 3-4 times but no change so I guess it is not a software problem. I cleaned the contacts and everything good . The battery is fully charged.
Do you have any suggestions?
same with me few days ago. do you remember, u just installed new software? might be confict, or software is in beta, has bugs.. hardreset, try installing your softwares 1 by 1, test with calling form different phone, untill u find which software make your phone reset.
O2 mini keeps reseting
Hi,
I also have the same problem with my O2 mini. It keeps resetting by itself. Sometimes if i try to play a MP3 file and it resets. I think its a software problem. I took a complete backup and did a hard reset. Then the device worked properly. But after I restored my backup, the reset continues.
Either its a software conflict or its a virus/bug.
Hi all,
my imate-jam does the same. I already tried previously working rom restore but nothing. Now I ordered a new battery since mine is more than two years old. I'll try it and let you know.
Bye.
sassoz
Any luck?
Hi all,
I have already given you my assumptions that either its a software conflict or a bug. Because after hard reset it worked fine and after full backup restoration, again the reseting started.
Is there a patch available?
I think it could also be shortage of RAM Memory as Magician has always been having Memory Problems.

This is not my case, infact it keeps resetting just after a hard reset without any software installation, i've also removed the phone sim.
I'm still waiting for the new battery that i've ordered...
bye
it's definitely the batter. i already experienced the same problems and my device worked flowlessly again with a new battery.
I had exactly the same issue. A new battery solved this. My battery was 1,5 years old.
Thanks!
Thanks for solving this problem.
One last question. How much would a new battery cost? And is there another company like Energizer making batteries for Magician that would last longer?
Thanks!
Hi,
after changing the battery (bought this one http://tinyurl.com/3yx8oo), the device continued to reset. Then I've cleaned the battery contacts and the little battery cover switch with a contacts cleaner spray and I haven't had any problem for the last two days...
Bye
Hi sassoz, please explain more details. I got new battery but it seem no change.
Thank you.
I had the same problem it crashed whilst making a call and eventually went on a endless reboot cycle. Corrupted contacts could be the problem ( it was with mine, I had restored a corrupted contacts backup). What I did was to remove the batt for a few minutes, put the batt back and hard reset. Later sysnced the contacts thru AS. The problems vanished.
Hope this helps.
Yep, it seem about contact list. But I don't know what is "corrupted contact"? I sync the contact list with my laptop through ActiveSync, but my contact list is OK.
Please explain more details.

Tukhoi, I was using PPC Contacts Backups, to backup (duh!) my contacts on the move. The problem discussed here occured almost immediately after I restored one such backup. To test this further I did a hard reset ( after sorting this issue) and restored the same backed up contacts and voila! the problem came back and went on a continous loop of resets. So I came to the conclusion that the backup of the contacts that I had taken was corrupted. Hope this is clear, sorry if I was vague.
Hi veeru27,
Thanks for your explanation.
I removed all my pst (data file of outlook) on my computer, remove all contact from outlook on my computer. Then I sync PDA with computer. After that, I connect PDA with computer again, choose not to sync contact list. The problem still come back.
I though it's about contact list, then I remove all contacts from PDA, just leave some important contacts. It's OK until now (about 1 day). Hope it work...
Thank you so much.
Well, I was talking about electric contacts, not pim contacts.
So, i changed the battery but I still had the problem. Then I cleaned the electric contacts (where the mobile takes energy from the battery) and the little switch that activated by the battery cover (when you remove it the mobile switch off) with a contacts cleaner spray.
For two days I had non reset but suddendly they started again. I have a suspect that they have to do with electric part and should not be a software issue.
Sassoz,
If you are using Magician / JAM. There is a known problem with the loose battery cover, which causes frequent resets. (even a slight movement in the battery cover causes a soft reset). I simply glued the battery cover hinges to the main panel.Since then no problems. I suspect that the battery cover could be the culprit. Try this if you are adventerous http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

restoring data after a hard reset

Hello,
I had a problem with my phone, after removing some software I found that my phone wouldn't restart, (this think this might have been due to lack of space on the programs memory as I had a lot of stuf installed). it'd just stick on the windows mobile screen.
the only way that I could find to get it working again was a hard reset, (soft resets wouldn't work, it just hung on the windows mobile screen).
so, I turned it off, and turned it back on again held down the two buttons, waited till it asked me if I wanted to format and pressed send to ok this...
now the pone works, but i've lost all the data that was on it (expected).
is there any file recovery software that anyone knows of as I'd like to try to recover my old text and mms messages as well as some pictures and documents that were stored on the phone.
Many thanks,
Danny.
Well you are a bit late on this one. The time to install recovery software is before you need it. It can only recover what you have backed up. A hard reset is essentially a total erase and reset but I suspect you knew that. I use Sprite Backup and have several years of excellent results with it. SPB also makes a good backup program. Both are well worth the money and should actually be the first thing you install on your phone.
I've not heard of anyone recovering data from a hard reset. This is actually why most users keep the bulk of their data on the memory card. Good luck.

What he said...or she. I'm not bored enough to look you up, Zoltar, but that seems like a masculine name to me. I certainly wouldn't name my daughter Zoltar, for example...my son, on the other hand, would do well to respect me in the fact that I didn't give him a weird name.
Getting back to the issue. Forewarned is forearmed. Get yourself an SD card, and a backup tool. It's too late for this round (read: you're screwed), but there's bound to be a next time, if you're hanging around on this site. Also, keep your contacts synced to a computer, and copy the most critical ones to your SIM card, as well. It won't make them appear twice, and it's much easier to get contacts from SIM back onto a to phone than the other way around. At least this way, if you have to do a hard reset in the field, you don't lose those critical numbers.
K bye,
Myrddin

well...
I usually say that backups are someting that you tell other people to make whilst believing disaster will never strike you.
anyway... my stuff was backed up to a memory card, but the memory card stopped being recognised by the phone last week,
I've read several stories online about cards doing this. seems that they loose their formatting as the card now can't be read in a card reader and shows up as not formatted. now I'll get may card reader out and see if I can recover some of the data using data recovery software.
Also, I did take backups of my messages using PIMbackup... only after it was too late did I read the developers site telling me that media messages are not backed up because the media part of the message is an attachment.
so I'm left with the end result that my backups are not worth the effort i put into making them.
OK, looking at it from a different angle.
if there is no recovery software that can be run on the phone, is there any way that the phone can be recognised as a fat partition to a computer? then I could just scan the partition with regular tools that would be used to recover data from a normal hard drive.
I am looking for solutions of this kind also...
my PC to see my xda as an accessible fat partition so that i can scan it with a recovery application.. or ..
a recovery application written fro Windows Mobile
dose any one have answers?
thanks
lost data on pda
can I make a disk image of my pda and scan that with a recovery application on my pc?

Help, my Wing keeps constantly soft reseting.

I need you guys help real bad. Went to go use my phone when I noticed there was a gap between icons on the bottom tray of the phone. I tapped the space there to see if it was something there with no icon, but nothing happened. I figured I'd soft reset to see if that icon would go away. Now my phone has been soft reseting itself over and over and over for the past half hour. I can't get into my phone now. It loads the T-Mobile screen, loads the Windows Mobile screen then shuts down and repeats the process. Please tell me there is something I can do to fix this. I need my phone.
If it matters, I had installed some software prior to this, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Thanks in advance.
Try removing your SD card if you have one installed then soft resetting. If not then I really have no advice & wish you luck!
As mrbelvedere stated removing the memory card(if you have one) might fix it. If not you might have to reflash your ROM. You can d this by going to Bootlader mode (Hold CAMERA button and reset with stylus.) and flashing like normal from there.
Haven't gotten a chance to try either of your suggestions yet (I'm still at work and left my phone home) ut if I have to reflash my ROM, what exactly does that entail? I'm pretty novice when it comes to things like this so if I do like stated above, is it a pretty straight foward self explainitory process? And am I correct in assuming that if I hard reset, I lose everything and start completely fresh?
Well, you guys both helped me and unfortunately the answer isn't good. Removing the storage card did the trick, it finally stopped continously rebooting. However, a few of the apps that would load off the SC didn't load (which I could probably fix later) but then another error would pop up and this one said "No language dat file". I would press the ok button but the phone would just lock up and freeze and I'd have to pull the battery just to shut it off. Tried it a few more times, same thing every time. Did a little research and it seems this is caused by having Fizz Weather installed on your SC, which, of course, I had did not to long ago. Every article I read basically said I need to do a hard reset to get rid of this problem. I'm resigned to the fact that I'm going to have to start fresh, which in a way is a good thing because I can start clean and not download all the bull I previously had on my Wing (I was a new app fiend!), but I do have a few quick questions if you'd be so inclined.
Also, I don't have a sync cable, just a memory card reader so I can't do any ActiveSync stuff.
1. I did have SPB Backup on there and do have about 2 recent backups, however all I really need off them is my contact info, because I would like to start fresh. After I hard reset, do I have to reinstall SPB Backup to run the backup, or can I run it on my fresh Wing with out it.
2. What do I do about my Storage Card? I know I can just copy my movies, music, tsk files and extra stuff to my computer but what about the program files of apps I installed to the storage card? Do I just delete that folder? Should I delete the whole card and start fresh there as well? How exactly does that work?
Sorry for all the questions, but this is my first time having to do a hard reset and I don't want to screw up my phone any worse than I apparently already have. Thanks in advance.

First off, I would get a data cable for your phone, and then get the latest version of ActiveSync. This way, you can transfer files easily, plus, you can backup all your data/contacts. Plus, if/when you want to flash to a better rom, it's easier this way. You are going to want to reformat your flash card. Just for the time being back up all files on your computer, and flash it that way. Doing a hard reset isn't difficult or bad, but you will lose all data stored on your phone. It just basically reinstalls the original operating system, so it will be like you turned it on for the first time. Do you know how to do a hard reset? After this is all said and done, I would start looking into flashing to a different rom. The one that comes stock on our phones SUCKS.
Yeah, I definitely will be looking into a data cable now. Ironically, I was just looking at docking stations with the cable attached right before my phone went down. As for the latest version of AS, do you mean for the PC or the phone? I figured I should clear the storage card as well, since nothing will be linked to it anymore. The only thing I'm really mad about is losing my contacts, but hopefully spb backup will fix that. I do know how to hard reset, was reading up on it all night. I'm going to do that, see if all goes well, if it does, I'm going to buy that docking station then probably ask you about flashing! Thanks again for the help.
Sorry to post again, but I have yet another question. My friend has this ( http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Mad-...oid/199058/catOid/0/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do ) and no longer uses it. It looks like the ports are the same as my Wing. Could I use that as a active sync cable?
Nevermind, I'm an idiot. Was looking for a HDMI cord in my junk wire box under the bed and, low and behold, what do I find? Not 1, not 2, but 3 usb sync cables! I'm such an idiot! I hard reset, lose everything and now I find the cables. Oh well, you live and you learn. Besides, I can start fresh and get into this flashing business.

How to backup data without ActiveSync and TouchScreen?

Hello!
I'm new here and I was looking through several pages and topics but couldn't find a solution to my problem.
My touchscreen isn't usable anymore. It seems completely undamaged but I can't press anything anymore. I did a soft reset, without SIM card, with SIM card, without "SD?"card, with "SD?" card, etc... Nothing worked. I plan to do a Hard reset and if that doesn't work I have to contact my retailer. I cannot backup my data (Adresses, numbers, etc) because last time I connected the phone to the PC I choose "work as a storage device" and as my touchscreen isn't working I cannot choose the option "use ActiveSync" anymore...
Now I need a way to backup my data - somehow! I downloaded MyMobiler cause I've found a topic here with the similar problem where this was recommended. But this program also uses an ActiveSync connection. I hope to get the download link for "PocketController" but I doubt that it will be useful in my case. I could send the phone to the retailer and they would do the hardreset for me. They could try to recover as much data as possible. They said it would cost something like 20 bucks. My problem is that I'm not sure that all the data on the phone is allowed to have (like i.e. TomTomNavigator cracked and stuff like that). So I don't really want these guys to see all the data they recover...
I'm really desperate and need help. Please.
Thank you in advance
Pete
Hi
As you have "work as a storage device" on your phone can you see mobile device in your pc root when connected ?
r
Andrew
Yes! I can see the mobile device on my pcroot. I can see it as "mobile device" with the symbol of a cellphone. And I can see the "SD?"-Card as a storage device... when I click on the phone-symbol it opens another window but nothing's there.
I can open the storage device and there's everything in it that is on my SD Card but no adresses, numbers, etc.
Yes testing I can only see my SD card unfortunately you need Active Sync to see your device on your pc
Going to have another search because i am sure I have seen a solution posted.
r
Andrew
Yes that would be great. I'm searching all the time, but I can't find anything that could help me....
It seems that it's very hard to find a way to backup data without ActiveSync...
Eagerly waiting
Pete
Pete
I have searched and had no luck.
It maybe worth addressing the screen problem again.
Several people have suggested taking the battery out for a day and even putting the phone in the freezer for 15 minutes.
Don't laugh the freezer trick worked for me !
Just be sure to wrap in tissue etc. to dry the the condensation out when removing.

Hi sorry to doble post, and to bring back this old thread.
did you manage to backup your contacts?
i have the exact same problem.
screen unresponsive for the 3d time...
last use with the computer was a storage device.. so no way to choose active sync...
any help is welcomed..
just remove your microSD and next time you connect to the PC the phone will automatically select activesync.
Thanks for the quick reply!
I am going to try that on the computer i use to backup regulary as soon i am home.
one extra dumb question.. once i have the sync done.. how to put that on an android phone?
is there going to be a particular file to grab or ..it is going to be like hell hehehe.
I will google it for the answer also, jsut in case
