My device is O2 Mini S. Sometimes it just goes dead and nobody can call me. The funny thing is that I can call and the signal bar is in good condition. When I restart the device, signal bar goes dead too for some time and I just can't establish connection to the service provider any more. After some time it just appears to be ok and I can call again. Even incomming calls work. WTF??!? Is it something wrong with device or my service provider? It's actually very annoying that nobody can get in touch with me when i REALLY need to...

Sounds like a device issue more than service. Have you contacted O2 to complain about it as it may be that the XDA needs replacing. I know my Nokia started doing something similar and would lose network for no reason even while my partners' phone (also Nokia on O2) was fine and had a full signal strength.
Try setting the network manually rather than automatic, i seem to get better signal this way.

Thanks, this seem to have worked. Haven't got any missed call in 4 days... However, this is very odd, why does it happen with automatic network detection?
losing connection, no calls, no sms
i have had the same problems,
manual network selection works.
also take a look at the preferred networks list !
in my case a natwork, i have no access to was selected.
have a nice day

Hello all,
I have had my X1 for about a month, and it seems I've come across a problem that defeats the purpose of a phone. I can't seem to receive calls for some reason...recently my friends and family have been telling me they have tried to call me but it just ends up going to my voice mail. I just tell them I was probably on the phone with someone at that time, or my phone was off. Only today did my friend call me to find me in a parking lot that I finally realize its my phone. So I attempted to call myself with my homephone, and tada! it went straight to voicemail. I don't even get any sign of a missed call.. Did anybody else getting this problem? I did a soft reset and it seem to fix the problem. It has probably happened within the past 2 weeks..I have the generic UK rom so I'm still waiting for the official R2A one. It would be great if someone could explain how to prevent this problem from happening.
not that i have a problem with my x1a, mostly because i rarely get calls and rarely use it but i have another phone that would have a problem that you describe.
i think it was due to the phone switching between 3g and edge signal. i work in the ship yard and the steel walls around the ship interfere with my signal and my phone would switch back and forth between getting the best reception (3g and edge).
well anyways, i think the switching back and forth would somehow screw my phone up and i wouldnt get any calls after getting off work.
my brother who also works at our shipyard and carpools with me would try to call me up to ask me if i was getting off in time but i wouldnt know that he had been trying to call me untill we meet up. he tells me that he has been trying to call me and so as were walking back to the car, i asked him to call me to see if my phone is working.
sure enough, my phone doesnt work untill i turned it off and then turned it back on. so if your in an area with poor 3g reception, maybe that could be causing your problem.
my old phone was an old lg cu500. thats my beater phone and since i dont use it for browsing the internet anymore, i set it and leave to use edge. it gets a stronger signal than 3g but if i do need to use 3g, i just go to my phone settings and set it back to use both signals. for some reason, i almost love that beater phone more than my xperia. mainly because its small, compact and i dont have to worry about scratching or damaging it anymore.
hmm, that is rather interesting...however my service provider's 3g frequency band is not compatible with the x1. I also don't have an internet service type of plan with my phone.
However just going to my settings, I noticed that my phone was set up to attempt to connect to the internet via HSDPA. I'm going to disable it and see what happens.
if you dont have 3g or hsdpa connection, then i would set your phone to use only gsm.
I also miss most of my calls but my problems is other some times it rings and some times it doesnt. Anybody know how to fix this?.
I have seen these problems with another PDA, in that case it seemed to be related with the PDA radio at the beggining, but even if that is one of the probable causes, there are another two to be considered.
The first one is the sim module, I own the same sim since 6 years ago, and this sim was programed specifically for the symbian phones of those years, it is in fact unable to send/receive any MMS with a PDA.
The other PDA I'm talking about is an Universal, the same phone worked ok with my sim and failed to receive many calls (even if the covering of this phone company was "better") -in the same place- with the universal, We first suspected a broken sim, but using this sim in a old gsm phone, it worked just fine.
Also, the cell companies, tend to "abuse" of their position and then to "seed" the phones with applications that do use the phone automatically, these programs are made mainly for symbian phones.
Remember also that the cell networks are exactly that, computer networks, and sometimes their databases are not perfectly compatible with all the possible variations of slightly different phones, in this case, PDAs are the least common type of phone.
So, try your phones with other (another cell company) sim, try using the sim with old phones, etc.
hope this helps.
I was thinking of posting this in the general section but posting it here seemed more appropriate as I think the issue at hand is of a more technical nature. If this is not the case I apologize in advance.
I recently purchased a Black HTC Magic (Rogers branding) for use on the AT&T network here in the states. Since then I have had a very difficult time initiating calls while connected via 3G (UMTS/HSDPA). Even in high or low signal situations.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any consistency to my ability to make a call while on 3G. At times 5/5 calls would be successful and other times 1/5 calls are successful (the latter being true more often than not).
Suspecting there was some issue with my device being on 3G I forced my device to use 2G (EDGE) connections only. At which point my reliability issues go away completely (from what I can tell).
I don't experience any strange issues with using my data connection while on 3G/2G so it seems to be specific to voice.
Another interesting thing to note is while trying to initiate a call with the Google Voice application on 3G, I experience the same call initiation issues as mentioned above. Google Voice works as expected while on 2G.
I experience these issues on the original shipping Roger's ROM, as well as all the other 3rd party ROMS (HoFo, Cyanogen, etc...)
Here is information about my device from fastboot...

Is it possible that my SIM card may be causing issues?
Anyone else with a North American Magic experiencing issues on AT&T? I appreciate any help you guys could provide.
your phone is ok
perhaps you might have heard... iphone great phone...AT&T absolute **** network
with dropped calls, and constant diverts to voice mail. dont sweat it. its AT&T not
your mobile.
I would have to agree that it's probably the network, although I might be wrong. I also have a Rogers Magic running on AT&T in Arizona, and I have this issue as well, but not nearly as frequently as you do. This same problem used to happen from time to time with my HTC Fuze and my BlackBerry Curve.
I've had a variety of different devices on the AT&T network (Northeast/Washington, D.C) and although yes I have experienced AT&T's wonderful network. What I'm experiencing just doesn't seem right. Makes me wonder if it's my SIM or particular build....

MOD EDIT
Moved into general discussion forum as not related to android development
if you are not using a newer sim card i would start by changing that. i was using an older 3g sim which i have used with many phones and i found that by changing to a brand new sim the few connectivity issues i had have gone away
which ROM?
Just a question, but which ROM is everyone here using? I, too, experience the random inability to make phone calls over HSDPA. I was told by an at&t rep in-store today that the Rogers Magic does not 'show up' in their system as 3g capable. Pure bs is what I think, but lets rule out software, yes?
If it is not your sim card then it is most likely your network.
Calls over 3G/HSDPA is fine on my Magic and was also fine on my Nokia N79 using the same Cingular SIM card that I have. However, making outgoing Google Voice calls over 3G/HSDPA is a no go.
Yeah...making calls was fine on my Unlocked Touch Diamond, too...but it's NOT on the Magic (32a).
SO...I'd just have to guess that it's *probably* not the SIM card.
I was told (via an exceptionally helpful phone rep) that the "voice 3g" in my area is not very good, but that the "data 3g" is much better. Which (she says) is why I have trouble making phone calls, but that data works fine.
I don't think so...but without *that* answer, I'm left with the AT&T stock "well, we don't support *unlocked* phones, sir, we can't guarantee that they'll work with our network".
ARRRRRGH! REALLY?! SO, phones with the same chipset, using the same technology won't have the same results?
PLEASE, FCC, INVESTIGATE THIS B.S!
Hey radikaled, I have some new developments with GV and outgoing calls. If I set the GV call options to "ask for each call" the issue of calling over 3G appears to be alleviated somewhat. Basically, when initiating a call, you will be prompted on whether you'd like to make the call via GV or not. At this point, wait a few seconds at this prompt and then choose GV. So far the call has successfully connected 100% of the time.
It appears that the data connection is too slow to establish fully over 3G, therefore, the call fails if you don't wait the few seconds before choosing to call via GV.
Let me know if this works for you.
I too had issues with my ROgers Magic unlocked on ATT. When I first got it I used the original ROM and then the HoFo ROM. Both had similar issues with dropping calls when switching from EDGE to 3G and back. I also dropped more calls than normal.
I recently switched to Cyanogens ROM and new radio. I have not had any issues since and then. Calls and switching is very stable. Also the clarity and volume is also much better. Just my experience. Very pleased with this phone on ATT now.

Thanks for sharing your experience. May give CM ROM a shot.
Good read.
Nice post. Interesting topic.
I tried to send several other users your way...I'm sure they eventually checked this out. I've come across this issue with some other folks recently too.
Best of luck though.
Me TOO!
I also have a similar problem. When connected with HSDPA, about one third of the calls I make fail immediately, even with full signal strength. I then wait a few seconds and dial again, and it works. I actually am using the sim card from a previous nokia POS phone I had from two years ago; the ATT people just took it out of the previous crap phone and put it into my poor fuze. How much does a new SIM card cost? Can I get a new SIM card without att bothering me about not having the stock rom? I'm using Da_G's clean fuze 23008 winmo 6.5 with the 1.12.25.19 radio. I live in the Youngstown, Ohio area (between cleveland and pittsburgh), so cell reception on any network is pretty bad, but it seems the ATT/cingular network around here is particularily bad. Any ideas?
Hi all,
I've finally got my hands on the DHD, and after using winmo for the last ~5 years I'm loving it, but I seem to have a problem with receiving calls.
Earlier tonight at work I was using the market place, playing a bit of Angry birds, and I got a couple of texts from T-mobile saying I had missed calls, I also had a few missed the night before aswell while i was playing around with it.
I've asked the people who called and they said the calls go straight to answer phone as if the phone is off/has no signal, but the signal is great both at home and work.
So far I have rooted and S-OFF'd the phone, but have not installed a custom ROM yet. I thought this may be kinda like the Iphone 4 touch of death issues, but cant get it loose signal by covering it with my hands.
Has anyone else had this issue, or does it look like I may have a dodgy handset?

Does your phone have 3G coverage at your workplace or is 3G enabled on your phone? 2G allows only voice OR data at the same time, while 3G allows both. So if you were using data e.g. marketplace, syncing etc., your call might not get through. Might be worth checking your phone settings.

didnt know that, will have to re-enable 3g D:
Sorry it took me so long to get back to this thread. Thanks for the replies, After being on shift for the last week it seems that my workplace is in a bit of a coverage grey area, so depending where I am stood, strength of the wind or the current celestial alignment, the phone will swap between 3G and HSDPA, so from what I can find it looks like I may of missed these calls due to this issue.
It should not matter if you're swapping from 3G and HSPDA, you should still be receiving calls if you're on 3G. HSPDA is 3G, but faster. It you still miss calls, I'd suggest talking to your provider.
Really hoping I can get some help on this problem; pretty sure I've read everything on the Internet without finding a solution.
I have an unlocked Telus Desire HD running on the Rogers network, everything should be fine there as far as phone and network compatiblilty is concerned. I can get service on Rogers' GSM only Edge network just fine, but when I make the setting for the 3G connection (WCDMA network preferred) I get a connection for about 30 sec. then is disappears and never comes back. As far as I can tell this is a common problem and have found no solution that works for me, bummer. Also, when I am connected to 3G I cannot make or recieve calls or SMS.
My next move is a root, debranding, installing custom ROM and flashing a new radio in hopes that flashing a different radio is the solution. I run CM7 on my Nexus One right now with the same SIM card I tried in the Desire HD on Rogers with no problems.
Any opinion on the chances of this fixing the problem, or should I just sell the device and go with something else?
Thanks,
Hi
I had this sort of problem before. It was just a problem on the Network's side. Not the phone. Call Rogers in your case and ask them about it. If they say its fine then thats the time to start messing about with your phone.
They wouldn't give me a solid response because it's not a device supported by the carrier; went to Telus and they wouldn't help me out with anything because evem though it's a Telus branded device, I'm on the Rogers network.
They are all no help at all. Any way I appreciate my Nexus One much more now.
OK the next thing to do would be to take the SIM card and put it in your Nexus One to see if there are any issues with the actual phone. If it works fine in the Nexus One then we have something to work with here.
