Working Video Chat software on HD - Touch HD General

On my quest to find working video chat software on my HD I came across 3 titles I personally tested wich albeit with problems do work on my device. These are the following :
1) Ivisit 4.0beta4 downloadable from http://www.ivisit.com/
- Has both a dekstop and Windows Mobile version.
- Works on the HD but only in landscape mode.
- Text input for logging in is a bit tricky
- I tested it from PC to mobile and mobile to mobile both work but with awfull video quality
- This software is probably the best I could find for now. Other than the low quality issue it works fine.
2) Vzochat downloadable from http://vzochat.com/en/Default.aspx
- Has both a desktop and Windows Mobile version.
- Works on the HD but only in landscape mode.
- I used the nightly build version for HTC MAX
- The configurator is needed to configure it properly : ie select front camera, and use safe mode draw for video.
- I tested it from PC to mobile and it works with OK quality but connection gets lost after a minute or so. Also only calling from PC to mobile seems to work.
3) Tivi 2.04 downloadable from http://www.tivi.com/
- Has a desktop, windows mobile and symbian version.
- Works on the HD but with terrible video quality and only the rear camera works.
- I tested it from PC to mobile and from symbian to windows mobile. All work but like I said only with the rear camera and a very bad video quality. Screen on the HD doesn't get filled.
That's it for now. I will try Microsoft Portrait and Octrotalk if I get the chance. If there are any other working video chat programs out there let me know please.

Chatvideo.
Thanks you for the beautifull reviews.
Chatvideo is the future for WM and is comming closer to reality I see !
You made me curious, I will give it a swirl as well.
Grtz,
Leo

- As dnm said ivisit works; but if you want video fluidity you get bad quality; and if you use better quality then it's too slow. Only main camera (= rear camera) is detected for me.
- Also tested the nightly build version of VZOchat. I could see on the Touch HD the video from my laptop's webcam not too bad, but none of the cameras of the HD worked.
- I didn't try Tivi.
- I tried Octrotalk, the video doesn't seems to work, but voice is ok.
- I also tried Microsoft Portrait, the configuration is not so easy so I didn't manage to call anyone with it. However from what I've seen in the options, it only detect the rear camera.
- Camfrog is supposed to be a video chat application, but has only "chat" on the HD
... enough testing for tonight, anyway it seems that there is no good video chat application for the HD so far : /

got it to work with good quality, but i can only select main camera. Thats the one on the back..

got it to work with good quality

OctroTalk is working with video for you? I can't click on "video call" it's grey / non-clickable.

aah sorry wasn't very clear. I got iVisit to work with decent quality. Mobile to pc. But only the rear camera. Then i tested VZOchat. That's even better, better quality plus it lets you select the front cam. Its rotated though. The interface is landscape but the camera isn;t if you know what mean.

Front camera at last
I finally got VZOchat to work too. Using the normal version (not the nightly build) in VGA mode (using WVGAFIX3). The rear camera still doesn't work but we can check "Use front camera" in the configurator, under "HTC tweaks".
As you can see in the attached picture it works!

In blue is what my TPC's webcam capture: the AMD bear.
In red is what my Blackstone front camera capture: myself taking the picture.
However as Jewstie already noticed, the UI is in landscape but the camera capture the video as if I was using the phone in portrait.
And my Blackstone was getting disconnected quite easily, resulting in crashes, but that could be because of my poor data line.
Actually this version of VZOchat is in beta since end of October 2008 so still quite recent, and they seems to provide some special tweaks for HTC devices!
I hope it will improve soon, as it's the only chat which use the front camera.

what do you mean by normale version ? And what's a link for download this normal version ? because i have a problem to display the cam of pc in my htc hermes200 with the 6.30 version sur http://vzochat.com

VZO is a bit odd. not friendly. and it leaves your desktop camera on permanently (which means you have no idea if someone is watching you!). may do the same on the phone?

Try Camfrog
http://download.camfrog.com/
There is a download for MAC.
***Doesnt work for video on the phone, only chat.

There's another odd thing I noticed with VZOchat on Blackstone, both with HTC MAX build and with the basic one: the device screen switches on randomly, generally some ten or twenty seconds after the device was switched off with the button and remains on. What is more strange is that the WZOchat is not open (it does not appear in the list of active applications, neither in the tast manager). Once VZOchat uninstalled, this strange behavior disappears...

Still works in landscape.
Video conferencing works:
I could vcall from laptop to mobile and from mobile to laptop.
Blackstone's front camera displayed on both mobile and laptop.
Laptop's webcam displayed on both mobile and laptop.
Now on audio, my laptop could get the audio from my blackstone mic, but I couldn't get properly the audio from my laptop mic onto my blackstone.
Maybe it's because my laptop have lousy integrated mic.
To get Blackstone's camera to record properly we have to go to
options> advanced > camera tweaks
and check theses 2 elements:
- Front camera capture
- HTC Diamond Compatibility

This problem is still there unfortunately.
Overall user experience: not yet totally stable, but definitively the best we have on Windows mobile so far.
I will try that one later on a real call with my family..

I tried it. It does work, but after that it completely freezed up my desktop PC....
This morning starting up the PC took about 45 minutes. After that I could copy one tiny file to a fileserver (took about 10 minutes).
I rebooted (or: pressed the power button) and disconnected all hardware and networks (because I didn't know what the problem was: it could also be a hardware problem).
It took me another 5 minutes to startup (a lot quicker then before because VZO could not find a network) and uninstall VZO. Reboot again (the official way) and my desktop is again at full speed.

3g camera as webcam?

Hi i was just wondering if the camera on the front of the device can be used as a webcam while on msn messenger?Or if perhaps in some way it could be modified. It'd just be a cool thing to have when your away!cheers
if you mean a webcam for your pc then do a search for webcam in the forum because the universal would as much possible to act as the role of webcam as any other htc device with a cam
No i mean a webcam in itself.Since it will be capable of 3g calls i see n reason reason why i couldn't,in some shape or form be a webcam in itself while on msn on the ppc.Perhaps with some tweaking,i don't know just a question
oohh ok well does messenger pocket support webcams at all ?
i dident think it did
if it does it just need to support the htc cam
with ms portrait they dident support htc cams
if it does not support webcams then maybe in a future version
theres no options for it i can see, shame tho, i use jasjar alot on wifi and it could have so much potential for msnm
maybe in the next version

soz but i think you got the wrong end of the stick there,
agreed that is good and has it been successfull on the universal?? if so im gonna grab that baby!!!!!, If im correct that app is used to use the universal "AS" the webcam for a desktop pc, for use in msnm etc, but im on about pocket msnm actually on the phone, using the webcam within the phones version, surlly that is a big oops by M$ specially as theyre charging for the upgrade to the version on the universal
argh, to many different versions of the same thing!
Doesn't work on my JasJar. It complains: "Error opening HTCcamera.dll" or something along those lines.
it works on mine mda pro.
It uses the 1.3MP camera instead of the Cmos one..
And the screen is upside down on the pc, and i must hold the camera also upside down to get a straight picture.
its a great app !
It's a shame it cannot be used as a webcam in pocket msnm.Would be a great feature
LxCam Special-Edition for MDA Pro / HTC Universal arrived via mail from author. No more problems with upsidedown. Videostream via WLAN, have a look:

I am hoping they are working on an API that will allow the second camera to be used as a webcam. I know MSN Portrait supports that on previous PPCs that had to have an camera installed via SDIO/card, so I don't see why it wouldn't be able to do the same with a built in cam

Turn your new HTC pda into a webcam!
Turn your HTC PDA into a webcam
(a little slow and not as good quality as internal video, but still a neat little trick)
Note **** This is a trial version for 14 days ****
1. Download the following files
http://www.virtual-gadgets.com/download/LxCamView.exe
http://www.virtual-gadgets.com/download/LxCam1.01.exe
2. Copy LxCamView to the desktop computer and make a shortcut
3. Copy LxCam1.01.exe to the pda and make a shortcut
4. On Desktop/server, configure the firewall appropriately: add a TCP service with IP address of the Pocket PC (or internal lan or allow any device) with port number 4444
5. Start Wifi or Activesync Connnection
6. Start LxCamView on the desktop computer
7. Start LxCam1.01.exe on the pda
8. Select tools, then select ip address, enter ip address of pc/workstation,select ok
You should see the image!
On Pocket PC, setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Zone1\LxCam\Rotate to 1 rotates the picture by 180 degrees
He also has a great photo app that takes pictures with the pda camera and auto ftp's them to your web site... The photo app was cheap and works well on my jasjar, pda2k and my son's hp6315.
Check out this developers web site for more info

and no, I don't have anything to do with this web site or developer; I just thought he had a couple of good apps....
Does this work as a webcam for MSN? I know there used to be an app that did it for other PPCs, but that it didn't work for MSN.

VGA Web Browsing?

Does Pocket Internet Explorer allow VGA web browsing? I've seen screenshots of PocketIE that I thought were VGA, but then I found a few references to suggest it upsizes web pages to 320x240 on a VGA screen.
640x480 web browsing in enlarged VGA mode:

640x480 web browsing in true VGA mode:
Those screenshots are from Windows Mobile 2003SE, not Windows Mobile 2005. The true VGA screenshots require a 'hack' called ozVGA, but it only runs on WM2003SE, not WM5.
Does WM5 have the ability to provide true VGA web browsing without a hack?
Don't know the answer to the resolution, but have you made sure you zoom out as far as possible in IE?

It does run on WM5... kinda... It does work and switch the machine into true VGA mode, however, because the OS handles icons differently in WM5 you don't get the icons on the top of the screen and the icons on the Today screen and in Programs don't show up correctly. Additionally some apps like Contacts and Calculator refuse to run in VGA mode. That said, however, Pocket IE *does* work, and provides a nice picture like the one shown. When I'm away from a PC and need to spend some time browsing I'll use ozVGA to switch to true VGA and deal with the other issues so I can get a better browser interface.
Of course... why MS configured IE to enlarge the size of some images in non-VGA mode without providing a way to turn off that 'feature' is entirely beyond me.
Brett
Can you explain how you managed to get OzVGA to work with WM5? I install it, then my XDA Exec doesn't boot into the today screen. I tried twice (with a hard reset).
when i tried it, i would sometimes get past the password screen before it locked up other times i could get to the somewhat oddley arranged today screen before it locked up, had to hard reset to get it back.
but ruddy hell, it was small and sharp!!
We just need someone with a K-Jam to rip the 96dpi dlls and pass them over. We then need to work out how WM5 calls the dlls depending on resolution because it appears to do it in a different way to WM2003SE.

I'm not sure what to tell you... I didn't do anything special, I just installed it and it worked (with the limitations I mentioned above). I've also switched to VGA mode by manually editing the registry, so you might want to try that.
Brett
Is it really as simple to get a VGA display as installing this program and clicking for it to proceed? I've got an XDA2s running WinMobile2003SE, still possible?

No.
You must have a VGA capable display to begin with. The XDA2s is QVGA.
I can understand why Microsoft have enlarged VGA mode, but why they didn't make this a user-selectable option is beyond me. One of the main reasons that I purchased an XDA Exec is so I could browse the web in VGA...
ashleyhall - if you want to try VGA, try nyditot software. You won't be able to read anything going QVGA to VGA, but it'll give you an idea!
I find on a Magician, going about 30% bigger is still quite usable.
V
Thanks for your replies - so the nyditot software would allow me to upsize my resolution on the XDA2s? I may just wait actually!
I don't understand why on the XDA Exec they didn't supply this as a Switchable option as in WinXP - but on the Exec is it then just the case of installing the ozVGA and away you go in high resolution?
ashleyhall - you can convert the qvga display to show VGA using that software, but the screen physically doesn't have the resolution, ie fine enough pixels, to show it well. So you'll have 4 times the screen space, but everything will be quite ugly. But as I said, good to get an idea of how it looks. I have to test some of my programs using this, so it comes in handy.
I recommend backing up before using the software. It's safe, but it can ocassionaly cause you to get stuck on a configuration you can't get out of if you don't know what to do, so restore from a backup.
V
Hi could you with a universal please try this site for me www.followus.co.uk enter a user name and password (anything will do) then see if the login button works, This dose not work for me, It also did not work on my 2i and as Netfront dose not seem to work on 2005.

The only one that's currently available is Minimo .010, but unfortunately while it works and it looks beautiful it's so slow that it's unusable. Apparently Netfront and Thunderbird are both in the works, but neither is available right now.

oz VGA and MDA Pro
Hi, the only real solution at the moment seems to be using an app called res2exe and compiling your own executable of say Opera. I dont have the visual studio to compile this myself, so right now I am using ozVGA sucessfully. My suggestion for the moment would be to use ozVGA and then the reg hack for IE6 mode. Seems to work well.
I have attached some examples taken from my MDA PRO.

Think you forgot to attach the samples, hehe! Very interested to see any VGA examples, particularly if anyone has an example of an XDA2s using that ozVGA??

Messenger app which does video??

So I have my lovely Tytn with it's front facing camera, and a microphone on the bottom... bit like a PC with a webcam and a mike. When I use my PC, I can have instant messenger chats with my friends using audio and video. Is there an app for WM5 which does this- typing is all very well and good, but when the hardware for sound and video is there, seems a shame not to use it.
Any ideas, anyone?
Oh yeah, and I have thought about the perenial (a) it takes too much bandwidth or (b) just get a video call enabled SIM. Bandwidth-wise, I used to conference call with video from my PC using a 56k modem, and as for (b), well I want to call people running MSN messenger on PCs, 'cos no one I know actually uses a 3G phone with video capabilities (apart from me!!).
Thanks all!
Cool Camera again...
Did you Try Cool Camera? Windows Live Messenger Mobile don't support the c front cam.
THE FIRST OFFICIAL APPLICATION THAT WILL SUPPORT THE FRONT CAMERA WILL BE SKYPE 2.5 FOR WINDOWS MOBILE AKU 3.5
Thanks! I'll give Cool Camera a go... hopefully it'll do what I want it to; I assume I won't be able to have a "full" video call (eg see the other person)?

awsome software....just tried it and it works great....tho its nearly impossible to get the athena to sit right.
I saw this ATEKSOFT software and thought it was very clever however from this point on I am advising people not to buy it. Although the software looks slick the customer service offered by the company is appalling. What is more, if you post complaints on their forum about the quality of after service they get deleted. Not what I would look for from someone who wants my money.
Nice idea - very badly executed.
You can do it for free
Download mymobiler: http://www.mymobiler.com
Download VH screen capture driver: http://www.hmelyoff.com/index.php?section=8
Start mymobiler and activate your mobile camera
Grab the part of the screen you want with VH screen capture
Now you have a webcam stream which you can use in any program like skype, msn etc..
Look at this video as example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wveANUBUIJM
Instead of using the microsoft remote tool use mymobiler. It is much faster.
PS: You need active sync to communicate with mymobiler
This is why I love this forum. I've learned something new today - I never would have thought of using the camera as a webcam, or about My Mobiler. I love My Mobiler, very cool app; note, it says you can connece via WiFi, too, not just Activesync. Interesting feature, when you activate "Mouse Curser To", and it essentially turns your mobile into a 2nd (or 3rd) display device for your desktop, with mouse and all.
One problem though, when I activate my camera I get normal video/pictures on the Athena, but only the foreground graphics (camera settings) on the desktop. The video is just a black screen. Any ideas?

My Mobiler shows only the foreground graphics.
Is there a way to shows what the camera shows in the athena screen?

Maybe something to do with the camera software or that it is a 6.5 ROM?
Can anyone confirm this?

how to run the shift's camera?

Here's one stupid question.
Altrough the camera seems to be ok in terms of hardware drivers i can't seem to find any utility to start it neither in control pannel or anywhere else. I cannot use it in yahoo messenger or similar services. Can someone enlight me about that camera?
camera does work , but only in MSN messenger
I played with the camera too...
The only program that recognizes the camera, and uses it OK , is MSN (live) messenger.
X-Lite (Voip Software with camera option) usually detects any camera I got.
However, on the Shift, no joy !
Also, another program called WinTLV (Superb windows time lapse recording software)
does not see the camera.
Drivers...drivers...drivers.... c'mon HTC .. supply us with new ones

With the program Active Webcam from Py Software can use the build-in Shift camera.. You can do video and photo
yep the Active Web Cam program works. I've tested it yesterday without any problems. However the program can't facilitate the usage of the camera with other programs.
I want to run the camera alone to take photo, do you guys know any good software out there with good and clean interface which does this job?
I use Dorgem v2.1.0 it's a small and freeware software.

I had the same problem of the camera showing as installed but not recognised by MSN, Skype, etc. So I just deleted the driver (from Device manager). Windows then rediscovered it and then it worked fine!
I have been using "cheese" on ubuntu. it has preview and can be used to capture video or still pictures.

This one is more than capable. The one posted earlier on page 1 (can't remember what it's called) has been discontinued.
But the one quoted above is perfect just for using the camera for point and shoot, video or stills.
Thanks.
Edit>>Struggles a bit with video (low frame rate, a bit like video calling quality, or like video phone you see on the news!) but I haven't really had a good luck around the settings yet too see if it can be manually improved.
I have installed the Debut Video Capture Software on my Shift, but when I run it it defaults to 'screen' which replicates my screen image but when I click 'Device' the selection remains at screen. I can't see any options to enable my camera device.
Anyone know what to do next?
(The dorgem one worked fine so my Shift hardware is not in question.)
Camera software
I tried a program called "AMCap" that I had. (You will have to Google for it, I can't remember where I got my).
It seems to catch the video & audio and lets me take stills and such.
