3g camera as webcam? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi i was just wondering if the camera on the front of the device can be used as a webcam while on msn messenger?Or if perhaps in some way it could be modified. It'd just be a cool thing to have when your away!cheers

if you mean a webcam for your pc then do a search for webcam in the forum because the universal would as much possible to act as the role of webcam as any other htc device with a cam

No i mean a webcam in itself.Since it will be capable of 3g calls i see n reason reason why i couldn't,in some shape or form be a webcam in itself while on msn on the ppc.Perhaps with some tweaking,i don't know just a question

oohh ok well does messenger pocket support webcams at all ?
i dident think it did
if it does it just need to support the htc cam
with ms portrait they dident support htc cams
if it does not support webcams then maybe in a future version

theres no options for it i can see, shame tho, i use jasjar alot on wifi and it could have so much potential for msnm
maybe in the next version

As first step have a look at http://www.zone1.de/PocketPC/LxCam.html
LxCam is working with MDA pro / HTC Universal.
Conclusion: HTC camera was found.
Wi-Fi-streaming is ok, but slow.

soz but i think you got the wrong end of the stick there,
agreed that is good and has it been successfull on the universal?? if so im gonna grab that baby!!!!!, If im correct that app is used to use the universal "AS" the webcam for a desktop pc, for use in msnm etc, but im on about pocket msnm actually on the phone, using the webcam within the phones version, surlly that is a big oops by M$ specially as theyre charging for the upgrade to the version on the universal
argh, to many different versions of the same thing!

Doesn't work on my JasJar. It complains: "Error opening HTCcamera.dll" or something along those lines.

it works on mine mda pro.
It uses the 1.3MP camera instead of the Cmos one..
And the screen is upside down on the pc, and i must hold the camera also upside down to get a straight picture.
its a great app !

It's a shame it cannot be used as a webcam in pocket msnm.Would be a great feature

I am hoping they are working on an API that will allow the second camera to be used as a webcam. I know MSN Portrait supports that on previous PPCs that had to have an camera installed via SDIO/card, so I don't see why it wouldn't be able to do the same with a built in cam

I e-mailed them and asked about future support. The reply was
" Thanks for your support. We may support windows mobile 5.0 in near
future."
So let's keep our fingers crossed. This would be the killer app.

Turn your new HTC pda into a webcam!
Turn your HTC PDA into a webcam
(a little slow and not as good quality as internal video, but still a neat little trick)
Note **** This is a trial version for 14 days ****
1. Download the following files
http://www.virtual-gadgets.com/download/LxCamView.exe
http://www.virtual-gadgets.com/download/LxCam1.01.exe
2. Copy LxCamView to the desktop computer and make a shortcut
3. Copy LxCam1.01.exe to the pda and make a shortcut
4. On Desktop/server, configure the firewall appropriately: add a TCP service with IP address of the Pocket PC (or internal lan or allow any device) with port number 4444
5. Start Wifi or Activesync Connnection
6. Start LxCamView on the desktop computer
7. Start LxCam1.01.exe on the pda
8. Select tools, then select ip address, enter ip address of pc/workstation,select ok
You should see the image!
On Pocket PC, setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Zone1\LxCam\Rotate to 1 rotates the picture by 180 degrees
He also has a great photo app that takes pictures with the pda camera and auto ftp's them to your web site... The photo app was cheap and works well on my jasjar, pda2k and my son's hp6315.
Check out this developers web site for more info

and no, I don't have anything to do with this web site or developer; I just thought he had a couple of good apps....

Does this work as a webcam for MSN? I know there used to be an app that did it for other PPCs, but that it didn't work for MSN.

VGA Web Browsing?

Does Pocket Internet Explorer allow VGA web browsing? I've seen screenshots of PocketIE that I thought were VGA, but then I found a few references to suggest it upsizes web pages to 320x240 on a VGA screen.
640x480 web browsing in enlarged VGA mode:

640x480 web browsing in true VGA mode:
Those screenshots are from Windows Mobile 2003SE, not Windows Mobile 2005. The true VGA screenshots require a 'hack' called ozVGA, but it only runs on WM2003SE, not WM5.
Does WM5 have the ability to provide true VGA web browsing without a hack?
Don't know the answer to the resolution, but have you made sure you zoom out as far as possible in IE?

It does run on WM5... kinda... It does work and switch the machine into true VGA mode, however, because the OS handles icons differently in WM5 you don't get the icons on the top of the screen and the icons on the Today screen and in Programs don't show up correctly. Additionally some apps like Contacts and Calculator refuse to run in VGA mode. That said, however, Pocket IE *does* work, and provides a nice picture like the one shown. When I'm away from a PC and need to spend some time browsing I'll use ozVGA to switch to true VGA and deal with the other issues so I can get a better browser interface.
Of course... why MS configured IE to enlarge the size of some images in non-VGA mode without providing a way to turn off that 'feature' is entirely beyond me.
Brett
Can you explain how you managed to get OzVGA to work with WM5? I install it, then my XDA Exec doesn't boot into the today screen. I tried twice (with a hard reset).
when i tried it, i would sometimes get past the password screen before it locked up other times i could get to the somewhat oddley arranged today screen before it locked up, had to hard reset to get it back.
but ruddy hell, it was small and sharp!!
We just need someone with a K-Jam to rip the 96dpi dlls and pass them over. We then need to work out how WM5 calls the dlls depending on resolution because it appears to do it in a different way to WM2003SE.

I'm not sure what to tell you... I didn't do anything special, I just installed it and it worked (with the limitations I mentioned above). I've also switched to VGA mode by manually editing the registry, so you might want to try that.
Brett
Is it really as simple to get a VGA display as installing this program and clicking for it to proceed? I've got an XDA2s running WinMobile2003SE, still possible?

No.
You must have a VGA capable display to begin with. The XDA2s is QVGA.
I can understand why Microsoft have enlarged VGA mode, but why they didn't make this a user-selectable option is beyond me. One of the main reasons that I purchased an XDA Exec is so I could browse the web in VGA...
ashleyhall - if you want to try VGA, try nyditot software. You won't be able to read anything going QVGA to VGA, but it'll give you an idea!
I find on a Magician, going about 30% bigger is still quite usable.
V
Thanks for your replies - so the nyditot software would allow me to upsize my resolution on the XDA2s? I may just wait actually!
I don't understand why on the XDA Exec they didn't supply this as a Switchable option as in WinXP - but on the Exec is it then just the case of installing the ozVGA and away you go in high resolution?
ashleyhall - you can convert the qvga display to show VGA using that software, but the screen physically doesn't have the resolution, ie fine enough pixels, to show it well. So you'll have 4 times the screen space, but everything will be quite ugly. But as I said, good to get an idea of how it looks. I have to test some of my programs using this, so it comes in handy.
I recommend backing up before using the software. It's safe, but it can ocassionaly cause you to get stuck on a configuration you can't get out of if you don't know what to do, so restore from a backup.
V
Hi could you with a universal please try this site for me www.followus.co.uk enter a user name and password (anything will do) then see if the login button works, This dose not work for me, It also did not work on my 2i and as Netfront dose not seem to work on 2005.
Any ideas Please.....

The only one that's currently available is Minimo .010, but unfortunately while it works and it looks beautiful it's so slow that it's unusable. Apparently Netfront and Thunderbird are both in the works, but neither is available right now.

oz VGA and MDA Pro
Hi, the only real solution at the moment seems to be using an app called res2exe and compiling your own executable of say Opera. I dont have the visual studio to compile this myself, so right now I am using ozVGA sucessfully. My suggestion for the moment would be to use ozVGA and then the reg hack for IE6 mode. Seems to work well.
I have attached some examples taken from my MDA PRO.

Think you forgot to attach the samples, hehe! Very interested to see any VGA examples, particularly if anyone has an example of an XDA2s using that ozVGA??

Full screen terminal services client - I DID IT!

WOOHOO! Works on both WM2003 (tested on emulator) and WM5 (tested on real life MDA PRO). Also works in portrait or landscape mode! 8)
I hope to finish the app in about 3 days, then I will release it for free along with full source code in VB.NET and C# (probably under the GNU GPL).
Until then, you can enjoy these lovely screenshots, full VGA screen terminal services is REAL nice, beats VNC any day!

You sure? Could I ask why?
Until Terminal Services allows me to see my full (3-display) 4800x1200 desktop on my Universal, VNC will be the only solution for me. At the moment, when I log in using Terminal Services my desktop is resized to 640x480 which is not only annoying but rather pointless. (And yes, I've tried checking and unchecking the 'resize desktop' box on my Universal with no success. :?
SiliconS, what on earth are you compensating for with a desktop that big! I'm so jealous! I have to admit, I way prefer VNC.

lol My wife would surely say "nothing" but I'm not going to ask her, just in case...
There's no substitute for desktop real estate when I'm coding a website. Laying all the windows (Photoshop, Homesite, Firefox, IE, Acrobat etc) out in one layer is so much more convenient for me.
It's not an expensive set up either. A standard dual-head AGP graphics card (VGA + DVI) and a £30 PCI (16MB!!!) graphics card from Maplin, with three 19" Belinea CRT monitors that are 8 years old. Each running at 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz.
I highly recommend it. 8) One day I'll replace the monitors with TFTs and then we'll be flying, baby!
SiliconS: I agree, I really need a bigger setup. I've got a 19inch TFT but you really need multimonitor when coding or designing.
Have you tried the citrix client? I got a few requests about that, and then everyone vanished...

No - was experimenting with VNC but didn't take it far. It's nice to know I can do it but it's not something I need on a regular basis.
Likewise; I suppose it's the kind of thing you need or you don't.
Remote control (eg remote winamp) turned out to be a better solution.

Depends what you mean by "stretch mode"? You mean like VNC does, keep same resolution of desktop and have scrollbars? I don't think that's possible with the MS TSC client, although I'm going to experiment with Nyditot Virtual Display next to see if that can trick TSC into giving a larger display area
Sorry but...what is service terminal for?

If you did mean this, then yeah just use the .NET VNC viewer. My needs are different to yours, I actually want the desktop resized to 640x480 full screen and a thin client (which VNC is not), leaving only TSC or Citrix. Each to their own
sl9: Re Stretching the display, if you follow this thread it seemed to be a fairly popular request, and my opinion from playing with the MSTS registry is that the client seems hardcoded to 640x480.
After we got the Universal working in VGA it seemed there was little need left for it though...
V
err yea i need to know as well.....whats the benenfit of a tsc to a vnc? i've only used vnc before./.........
I'm wondering if you're going to allow the user to choose which resolution they connect to the server at... I'd find that INCREDIBLY useful - maybe even more so than having just full screen mode.
That's what I'm saying NinjaDonkey, after I did fullscreen Terminal Services the question was whether we could increase resolution.
If you read that thread I queried some registry settings, and if they can be mirrored across from the desktop version (the one you get if you run mstsc.exe on your pc).
But it seems that colour depth and resolution are all fixed in the PocketPC client, so we're stuck with 640x480. It's ideal on the Universal though!

TSC is a proper thin client, this means if you log into a PC with TSC, a new session is created and you can use that PC at the same time as a local user without interfering with each other. You cannot do that with VNC, as it's just a screen scraper.

If you tick the box that says "limit size of desktop to fit this screen" in TSC, it actually re-sizes itself a bit smaller than 640x480 (something like 640x428), to "fit" the screen. It may be possible to trick it using SystemParametersInfo into thinking that the screen is actually 1280x1024 (for example), but that's a big maybe.
As for real VGA mode, some of us (me included) prefer things the way they are, but would still like some apps like terminal services to use all of the screen.

lol, it actually looks promising. I have Opera on my Diamond and it crashes a lot especially when rotating. And it causes Manila to crash too when you close Opera.
So maybe this can be a good thing.

Does this mean that PIE will finally be able to play Flash content (i.e. Youtube)? If I can use this to get rid of Skyfire, I will be a happy man!
I'll wait and see. Microsoft promised alot over the years, but didn't actually deliver most of the time.
Hope they prove me wrong though. Until then, i'll keep my Opera 9.

Did I miss something? How is this different from the PIE6 that's in the DFT rom I've been using since Septemeber?
What gets me is that the WM team are saying it won't be available as a download or upgrade because "the rich media experiences that IE Mobile 6 enables require more powerful, advanced devices".
Excuse me? Why then can others like OPera offer the same (or even better) on existing AND older devices?
It's a joke!
because they have so bad programmers who can´t manage that on slower cpus
Its like xp and vista, if you want vista to run you need to double or quadruble your RAM only because of some glassy windows. They are so incompetent. it is lousy programming: if its to slow, buy another faster cpu !
Is there a cab available for download yet then?

I guess bluemetal has a point in here although that is not the whole story. You see, the only way for these clowns to make money on mobile software is by selling it to device manufacturers, so if they are going to continue making software for mobile devices they have to make absolutely certain that the public thinks that there will be no chance in hell of getting "prettier" software on their older devices. By doing so, they push the sale of newer devices, and indirectly their new OS' to the public. To make things even more convincing, they release these ridiculous statements about how the devices are not powerful enough to handle it. I mean, why do you think that they have not offered upgrades to older phones (WM2003 to WM5 or WM5 to WM6)? It certainly is possible to do that (says a guy who has had a Blue Angel since early 2005 running an OS version that most new phones still don't have). Bluemetal's statement needs a small correction, it isn't that their programmers are bad (at least not all of them), but the code is written like that on purpose. Can the code be cleaned up for it to run better, faster, and in older devices? Hell Yes!!! Do they want to? F&^k No!!!!! (it is bad for business...
I can't seem to get the emulator to connect to the Internet. I've gone into File->Configure and selected my network card on the Networks tab, and the emulator appears to connect fine (icon in taskbar shows a connection, and then prompts me to choose "connects to Work or The Internet," as expected). But when I go into IE6, I can't get any pages to load. Just a "no DNS found" error each time. Is there some other setting I need to tweak somewhere?

4.2 definitely feels much faster to me. i only use wifi for browsing, but it's definitely loading pages much faster than before. glad they finally have a us server too. 4.1 still went through the NO servers (at least on my phone it did), and it was extremely annoying when sites that automatically set your location thought i was in norway.

Thanks! Installed & works for me using Esmertec JavaVM...using black skin; very fast.

edit your selector.utf file and change the domain for the mini 4.2 suite to be tckmax. add 3 spaces after the word tckmax to keep the file the same length.
4.2 is a yawner for me. mobile youtube support. big whoop. skins? yawn.
notes? your kidding right. speed up? I'm sure that if they have us based servers now, your old version 4.1 is using them.

No need to do dirty hacks on java security, just download the correct (signed version), from the alternate links on mini.opera.com\beta
It is faster for me and I love the skins.
I prefer green skin right now.
Hi, does someone tested it on vga screen ( diamond for example ) ? What about the fonts size ?
Ciao
Fred
Here is the link to launch it directly and the icon dll

I've been looking for one of these! I'll definitely be trying this out.
looks really awesome.
One clarification: does this repair the files too?
This is really going to get my service provider jump to the roof.
Works great, First used v1.3 on my diamond, this was not usable (crashes)
but 1.4 works like a charm.
btw also tested on a Omnia (WQVGA and this also works)
I got the following error
Error:System.Net.Sockets.Socket
I am trying to use astraweb.
Thanks
Never mind it was because it was a secure server
normal one works fine
Can we use SSL? With nzb mobile or any other tunnelling software like stunnel on win? Because my news provider use only snntp.

Well it is still a mobile phone, not a desktop pc. Increasing the number of simultaneous connections, will increase the number of processor threads. There are limitions to the number of threads that can be run on windows mobile. But who knows, the new chipsets are getting faster and new versions of windows mobile are coming out. For now 4 connections are enough to get the max speed for most mobile connections out there (3G, HSDPA).

It should work just fine with .net framework 3.5.
4 connections ... 6 must be better or 8 max... For wifi connections around the city and slows NNTP servers.
I have been looking for this type of application for a couple of years now. Works great on my pro, and I love it. Integration with a search engine would be downright perfection. Either way thank you kindly for the app.
sweet! thanks mate
I'm also using SABNZBD+ on my NAS at home - it would be great if I could use my mobile phone to initiate the download.....
I know such an app is available for the IPhone but not yet found one for winmo.

Awesome stuff! I got PAR2 code lying around here somewhere... maybe I can get it to recompile for WM.
Great application, I'd like to see an "auto import" folder for the next version
